Request to HTC S620 owners - does Windows Update w...

At some convenient time, can you do a Start, Settings, More, More, Windows Update, Check Now.
Does it work?
Mine is failing with "Connection to update server was not available".
I have dropped the Anyware part of my Broadband and have the phone on a different carrier. Slightly suspicious that the WU path is hard-coded to use a BT address which I am no longer able to access.
Googling the error message suggests I check the Hosts file but there seems to be no such thing on the phone.
But perhaps it never worked in the first place; hence my question.
I also note that after resetting the phone and not adding the BT customisations, I no longer have a virus checker.
TIA

V. useful info - thanks Allan. I was thinking in PC mode, so after an o/s reload, Windows Update was my first port of call.
It is misleadingly named! And will certainly be looking at BT servers, which is why I can't connect. Case closed.
Web browsing is pretty much BBC, TFL and National Rail, so not too worried about losing the security.
The only think I vaguely miss if the BT Home screen, which was pretty well designed. But I'm looking at alternatives (HTC Home etc.). Also have set up WM 6 SDK on my Visual Studio so I can write my own apps for the phone (if I ever get that bored).

  • Does Windows Update (for Windows 8 at least) update the MBR and, if so, how?

I ask because I've learned (the hard way) that if you use software that locks the mbr (in my case Rollback RX), then after performing a windows update, sfc /scannow will tell you that nearly all the updated files are "corrupt". Conversely, if I
perform the same exercise without Rollback installed, I get no errors or corruptions.
I speculate that the update must be doing something similar to what is supposed to happen in the TCM scheme, with a hash table or something similar held in the mbr, which gets updated at the time of the windows update, to store the signatures of the revised
system files or whatever, so that the system can verify file integrity as it loads them during the boot.
But I can find no evidence to support my speculation. Clearly something like that must be happening or we wouldn't see the alleged corruptions when using a locked mbr.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
According to your description, You Windows update installation corruption obviously caused by
Rollback RX. But that does not mean Windows update installation is relate with MBR. It is probably this software had a compatibility problem with Windows 8. I would like to recommend you to contact
the vendor of this software to verify the compatibility of this software.
    MBR:
the most important data structure on the disk, is created when the disk is partitioned. The MBR contains a small amount of executable code called the master boot code, the
disk signature, and the partition table for the disk. At the end of the MBR is a 2-byte structure called a signature word or end of sector marker, which is always set to 0x55AA. A signature word also marks the end of an extended boot record (EBR) and the boot
    sector.

  • Windows Update from COntrol Panel does not work??

    Hello,
regardless if it is common way to do so or not: Does anyone have experience with the "Windows Update" functions in WE8S?
I tried them upon a customers request, and I've seen that I could not get it to complete successfully when choosing the option in
Control Panel. It either hanged during "Downloading..." or at the "Preparing to install..." screen - I waited for many hours. But when I using the "Windows Update"
app from the start screen, updates were installed without any problems (OK, 1 has failed, but the process has completed). Of course, both methods have different look, maybe it is not the
    same...
As per Sean Limings' book it is no good idea to update systems in the field this way - shall I remove the functions from the system? What are you doing?
    Thanks,
    Willi K.

Maybe it was because of the number of updates (in my case there were 85 updates pending). After I succeeded installing via the "Windows Update" app from "Start Menu", there where two more updates, and update now worked when called from
control panel (at least one of them, KB2973201 still stolidly fails to install).

I have a Toshiba Satellite c655 with WIndows 7 64 bit Home premium. The hard drive died on it, so I purchased a new hard drive and purchased the appropriate Recovery media from Toshiba. I followed the directions and installed the 3 disks on to the new hard drive. But Windows update does not work I get the following error: Windows update can not currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your PC    No matter what I try, I can not get it to work. And it will not let me install Windows Defender either. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time on this matter.

  • IE 11 Does not load pages and "Stops Responding" After 11/26/2013 Windows Update

I have Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. IE 11. (Doesn't matter if I try to open 32 or 64 bit IE)
I keep Automatic Updates on and they install as soon as they are available.
Everything on my PC was running fine 11/25/13.
I came to it 11/26/13 after Windows Updates ran and now whenever I open any webpages, it does not load the web page 100%, no hyperlinks can be clicked on and once you attempt to click on anything. I get the "IE 11 has stopped responding" bubble.
It also seemed to affect Firefox which does not completely load pages either.
Any shove in the correct way to help solve this would be helpful.

    Robert -
Anyone who has gathered over 13,000 points is certainly to be respected as being super smart and uber helpful.  However, your response is inadequate on two counts.
First, "stopped working" is not an inexact phrase, nor is it a euphemism trotted out by a newbie who hasn't the skill to describe the problem accurately. "stopped working" is an exact part of the error message issued by Windows.  Of course it would
help if Windows would issue error messages that are more useful, but that is a different issue. For the purposes of this discussion, "stopped working" as part of the exact error message is a useful piece of information.
Second, despite your excellent suggestions for hunting down the problem, I'm guessing that few people here have the time or inclination to be beta testers for Microsoft.  Even if the exact cause is found, it is not likely that anyone here will
be able to fix the problem.  There are literally hundreds of people complaining about this problem in multiple forums.  If you know your consumer behavior metrics, then you know that means tens of thousands are affected.  This is systemic, not
a random problem on a few errant machines.  Microsoft needs to know that they have a major problem on their hands and they need to fix it.  I saw this problem starting with IE 10.  Is it any wonder that in that time, IE usage has fallen greatly
while Chrome has become the dominant browser?  (The only reason I am bothering to write instead of just shifting to Chrome is that Chrome also has its bugs, one of which affects a web app I use several times a week, so I need a functioning version of
    IE.)
So thanks Robert for all your help in the past, but this response isn't helpful.
Microsoft, are you listening?  Fix your browser.

  • My firefox beta 12 using Linux platform does not update to firefox RC1 via the "check for update" function. I know windows' beta version had this fixed, when would Linux get similar support ?

    Current platform : Linux
Current firefox version : Firefox 4 beta 12
Issue : does not update to RC 1 using the check for update feature.
Background : previously downloaded beta 8 and then it automatically updated to beta 12 using update features but for RC1, it does not.
I know users under Windows platform had same problem but was resolved and they can now update via check for update feature.
Please implement for Linux users too.
    Thanks !!

If you can't update then you can download and install the full Firefox 4 RC version.

  • Windows updates gave me version of Firefox that does not allow me to have Text and Icon in Menu Bar, lost my autofill; how do I get old version back?

Windows updates this morning gave me a different firefox: the Customize box includes fewer choices. No Text and Icon, which I want. Also, this new version dropped my Autofill.

    It wasn't Windows update that caused this, but Firefox automatic updates. It's the new Firefox 29 Australis, their attempt to look more like Chrome. They dramatically changed the UI, removing several features in the process. If the way it looks bothers you as much as it does others you can install Firefox 28 again by going here;
    https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/28.0/win32/en-US/
That of course does come with the risk of security exploits they fixed with 29, so beware of that. I also don't know if it will repair your auto fill or anything.
Otherwise if you don't mind the new look, keep using it.

Windows has a software updater built into Windows and when you install the Boot Camp drivers then it will install an Apple software updater also. I believe Windows is set to automatically download and install your updates as does the Apple software Updater. They both will update the individual files it needs to periodically.
"Microsoft updates" and "Windows updates" are basically the same thing in Windows. Are you talking about the "Windows support software" when downloading from Boot Camp Assistant? Apple installs a software updater for it's Boot Camp drivers in Windows 7 so you can do it manually or automatically.
The "Hot Fix" your referring to is only for certain motherboards built from other Windows only computer manufacturers and does NOT pertain to any Apple computers.
If you have a problem with your computer then it's best to ask a specific question so we can help better.

  • Windows Update does not work, Windows Standalone Update Installer stops with error 0xc8000247 (Windows 7 Home Premium on Acer Aspire 1810TZ notebook)

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.
Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore.
I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.
    I really would appreciate help.

I hit this same problem... I spent days trying to figure out what went wrong. MS advise of doing; Windows7 re-installs, BIOS/firmware updates, drivers changed, etc etc etc.
I installed a new(large) SEAGATE Momentus XT hybrid 750GB SATA drive upon newly purchased notebook, but the twist here is between the storage configuration mode in the BIOS, ATA vs. AHCI. See, the DELL BIOS required to configure my laptop storage for AHCI
mode, because I had the 4GB Intel Flash Cache Module (Turbo Memory) installed on the DELL Precision notebook. The Flash Cache is installed internally in the mini-pcie slot, loaded the Intel storage drivers, and when it works, is an outstanding feature which
    supports:
    Windows ReadyDrive*
    Windows ReadyBoost*
Looking at the details of the Intel storage drivers that support the INTEL TURBO MEMORY, they're from 2009. Of course it was recommended by users to install these drivers first before anything else, so it would function best, but this was part of the
cause to all the problems with Windows 7.  I've provided links to Intel Flash Cache info for those interested. Unfortunately, loading the HP/Intel Storage drivers fixes the Windows permissions/update problems, but "Breaks" the Intel Turbo Flash Cache
functionality now, even though Microsoft still supports ReadyDrive in Windows 7.
"Intel® Turbo Memory is a primary PC component, along with the CPU, chipset, and system memory. It caches large amounts of frequently used data or user selected applications for faster access by the processor. This decreases the need for hard-disk accesses,
saving both time and power, which equates to increased performance and energy efficiency. That's good news for users who run data-intensive software like media applications. It's also a good match to the substantial system requirements to load and run Windows
    Vista*.
Intel Turbo Memory is a single solution that accelerates data transfer both to and from the processor."
Intel discontinued support for the modules or drivers with the marketing move to producing their own SSD storage drives.

For me, I hit all the symptoms everyone else hit and thanks to humphrey for his find. I just wish Microsoft/Intel would get together and fix this Windows 7 issue between SW/HW; Large Drive Sizes, Licensing/Permissions, Flash Memory, ATA vs. ACHI, BIOS, etc.
There's been an incredible amount of loss productivity, resources, and costs incurred on this one ISSUE by everyone involved.

  • Hp split 13 X2 does not update to windows 8.1 how do I stop the auto update

My notebook runs with Windows 8.0 and functions well.  Unfortunately the Windows OS want so to update to Windows 8.1 and my notebook does not accept the upgrade as it will not configure the change.  Even though I have set the Windows update to require my approval before updates are initiated it continues to auto update to Windows 8.1.  When the update fails my PC automatically reinstalls Windows 8.0 and I am back working again.  This has happened 3X in the last 2 months and I am frustrated.  Does anyone have any suggestion on how to stop this cycle?

I understand that you are having an issue with updating your Windows 8 to 8.1. Although you have set the update to require your approval before installing the update, it does it automatically.
When the update fails it reverts back to Windows 8 and all is well.
Here is a link to HP PCs - Updating Windows 8 to 8.1 that may help.
You can also go to the  Windows Compatibility Center  that may also help to determine what is required for a successful upgrade.

  • Windows update fails to distribute to DP, source file does not exist

    Hi,
Users reported they could not install Windows updates. Some hundred should get their updates mandatory end of this week. We found out the Windows update package did not get on the distribution points.
    We tried to:
*update the distribution points, but that did not work

  • Multiclip editing does not update Canvas window with active angle

    Hi,
I am trying to do some multiclip editing but for some reason when cutting between angles the canvas viewer does not update with the video. Once I stop playback the cuts are all created properly and the video changes when playing back again. However, when editing the video does not change to the active angle. The audio changes but the video does not.
I have the multiclip playback setting in RT enabled and the canvas and viewer windows synced and matching each other when playing back, and video + audio is set in the sync menu.
I'm now stuck! and would greatly appreciate some help.
    Thanks
    Phil

    Welcome to the family.
I don't mean to brush you off because I understand your frustration. But what we know about mutliclip is that it really does work, if you follow the rules completely. We also know that most of the "multiclip doesn't work" posts are resolved by encouraging the user to be objective and to simply recheck the setup steps in the manual, one at a time. (Editorially speaking: There are too many of them, there are too many stupid gotchas in the multiclip setup. True. Hope springs eternal that FCP6 may fix many of these things. It should be a one-click solution.)
You can search for multiclip here and, after filtering out the nonsense from elitists like me, you should be able to detect something in your configuration that might be keeping you from getting the performance you are expecting.

  • Windows update requesting to install Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320

I received this today when trying to manually scan for available updates via the windows update in control panel. It shows message as below. Seems that it will install the latest Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320. Will this machine able to get any patch
deployed via SCCM if the WUA is not updated to the latest version?

I can't say I've heard of any widespread issues with this version of the WUA so YMMV as always. If you do have an issue, you should contact CSS though.
As for it being pushed automatically, that's correct and is no different than past WUA agent updates. It is considered an infrastructure update and is thus automatically installed via Windows Update or WSUS regardless of your client update settings unless
you've actually disabled the WUA via group policy (not the service though) -- this includes ConfigMgr also because ConfigMgr does not in way pre-empt WSUS and leverages WSUS behind the scenes.

    Question:
This update is MSP (not standard update) so it cannot be queried by win32_quickfixengineering WMI class. How to query all installed updates on system (registry, API, ...)?
How WUA query ALL installed updates?
    How to fix this issue?
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards,

    Hi,
You could check the version number. The version number of Office 2010 SP2 is greater than or equal to
    14.0.7015.1000.
The script in the blog below could get List of installed Windows / office Updates.
