Requesting guidance on repair versus replace for iBook G4 (2005)

I'm looking for some guidance in deciding to upgrade/repair for my iBook G4, operating Mac OS X 10.4.11. I've gotten to the point where I don't seem to be able to run more than one application at a time (for example be online and listen to music at the same time), download more photos into iPhoto (get an outa short term memory message), or watch most video online. It seems that I can't get the most recent versions of some applications as well, for example can't upgrade to the most recent version of flash player, which rules out online TV. I'm not knowledgeable enough to be able to tell if I should just give up on this old workhorse or not. I'd be totally willing to spend $200 ish and have someone clean things up, delete useless stuff, etc, but I don't even know if that is worth it and I'd just be throwing money away. The only other problems it has is lousy battery (can't really be unplugged for more than 5 minutes) but I can live with that for my purposes. I'm open to suggestions about how to troubleshoot, ie decision matrix for the mostly clueless. Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I would strongly recommend upgrading to a newer MacBook or MacBook Pro.
Chances are the hard drive is full (or nearly so), and also getting old, since the very newest iBook is over five years old at this point.
If you start replacing things, you could soon approach the cost of a newer computer.

hi can someone tell me why i am being asked to pay £210 for my daughter to get her phone screen repaired or replace for accidental damage as the phone is only 5 months old

The warranty does not cover accidental damage.  If you have a car that is under warranty and you crash it do you think you can get it repaired under warranty?

  • RAM replacement for Ibook Clamshell

    Hi,
I have just bought an Ibook G3 clamshell (300mhz) for my boyfriend.
After having updated from OS9 to OS10.3, I find myself with no memory left to install other programs.
I know how to replace the ram for this model but I'm not sure what model or what capacity to choose as different websites contradict themselves.
    Does anyone around here know?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
What is the hard drive capacity, and how much space remains available on it?
Do you have the original system CDs that came with the iBook when it was new?
They would include Mac OS 8.6.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook.html
You didn't say anything about having updated the firmware on the iBook, and that needs to be done before upgrading to Mac OS X. You have to do the firmware update from Mac OS 9.1 installed on the computer's hard drive.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395?viewlocale=en_US
(Maybe a previous owner updated the firmware.)
With sufficient hard drive space and Mac OS X 10.3.9, you should be able to use Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac:

Replacing the hard drive is not an easy thing to do:

hey, apparently my ipod touch 4g screen is cracked. the digitizer still works but the crack makes it hard to read and use the ipod
jut wondering is a repair or replacement for cracked screen under warranty? (i still got the 1 year warranty from apple)
also if not then how much would it roughly cost to fix the screen?

    Here are Apple's prices:

They do not fix it in front of you. I think you have to pay shipping.

  • Replacement keyboard for iBook G4 (M9419LL/A) 1.2GHz, 14"

I've seen three different P/Ns listed for iBook keyboards:
    922-6637 (Late 2004)
    922-6189 (Early 2004)
922-6913 (where does this one work)
I'm having difficulty locating any 922-6189 keyboards.
    Does P/N 922-6913 support my (early 2004, M9419LL/A) G4, 1.2GHz, 14" iBook?
    Thanks!

Hi and welcome, I looked at some of the more popular repair and part houses and it appears that all three are reconized as replacements for the iBook G4 early 2004 model. It might be just a slight color or transparency thing. You could do some more searching by just google-ing 922-6189.
Here is a offer from ebay:

  • I could not get my iPhone 5 which purchased in Australia repaired by apple in the US. Guys from apple retail store verified a replacement for me and asked to call apple care. However, apple care said they cannot get it fixed nor repaired.

My iPhone 5 got some defects and I went to a apple reatil store yesterday. The guy from the genius bar told me that he verified a replacement for me. And I need to call 1-800-apple care to finish that process. I called apple care and one of the senior supervisors told me that I have to send it back to Australia (where I bought this iPhone) to get it repaired. Turns out I could not solve the problem after a apple store vist and several calls. I just want to know if there any way to solve this. This iPhone is a factory unlocked one that purchased in an apple retail store in Melbourne at the day it was first released. And my experience today is not what I can tell as fair. I will be really appreciate for any helps and advices. Thanks.

Warranty on iPhone is not international, but valid only in country of
original sale. Since you purchased the iPhone in Australia, your warranty
is valid only in Australia. You must either personally return the iPhone
to Australia for evaluation and possible replacement or sent it to someone
in Australia to take into Apple for the evaluation. Apple will not accept
international shipments for repair nor will Apple ship out of the country
    after replacement.
Sorry to be the bearer of this news, but it is the way iPhone warranty and
    replacement has always worked.

    Hi,
Here's the Bottom Case Replacement Link
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/
It doesn't answer your specific questions about cost... but it does advise to contact an Apple Store or an AASP...
Anyway have a look at it... if you haven't already..
    Cheers and Good Luck...

  • HT3302 I just got a replacement 4 days ago, and I dropped in the water! I want to know if I'm covered by the policy of repairs product for a period 90 days? According with AppleCare Repair Agreement Terms and Conditions, Section 2. Repair or Replacement S

    ACcording....

If during the Coverage Period there is a defect in materials or workmanship of the Covered Equipment, Apple will, at its option, repair or replace or provide service parts for the affected Covered Equipment. Apple will provide both parts and labor, but may direct that you replace certain readily installable parts yourself, as described below.

    So what's your question?
Is the phone actually working?  If it is then use it.  If it isn't then take it into an Apple service provider for assessment.  I guess if they ask you about it you can claim protection under the 5th amendment (assuming you are in the USA)  - that's between you and your conscience in this situation.  That's why the thing is full of liquid sensors, including ones you cannot see.

  • If Apple EarPods just randomly decided to break into 2 pieces and get stuck in the headphone jack, will Apple replace or repair the iPad for free?

After I was done listening to some music, I of course puller out the EarPods from the headphone jack. But then I noticed how the tip broke into 2, so half of the tip is stuck in the headphone jack. Since they were Apple EarPods, and I didn't inflict any damage to them, would I receive a free repair or replacement on my iPad?

Are you still under warranty? You're going to have a tough time convincing them it wasn't your fault they broke, I predict. In any case, someone else had a good idea on one of these types of threads: take it to an electronics shop as they probably deal with this situation quite frequently.

  • Need guidance for ePubs for iBooks

I'm a professional formatter and have converted files to ePubs for several years. Now some of my clients want to upload directly to iBooks with an Author account. Since I'm a PC person I don't work with MACs although I myself have an Apple account (I have an iPad and iPhone). Lately several clients have gotten stopped at the upload because Apple says that the file they are trying to upload has spaces (that's the way my conversion software saves ePubs). So my question, should I be sending my clients special ePub files for iBooks with new space-less file names? It's not a problem, I just need to know to do this. All of my ePubs are validated through IDPF.

I found this at p. 46 of the iBookstore asset guide:
"All characters in the URIs must be valid with non-alphanumeric characters properly encoded (e.g., space should be encoded as '%20'). This problem most often surfaces in URIs in the NCX files and is due to spaces included in filenames. "
Via an account at iTunes Connect, you can normally get all the various guides produced by Apple regarding books (BookProoferUserGuide, iBookstore - Publisher User Guide, iTunesConnect_Publisher UserGuide)

I'm having problem to open the library button for iBook to read a book after I purchased few books.
I'm afraid if I deleted iBook app and reinstall, my order books will be gone.

  • Will apple replace broken ibook with macbook

I don't know if Apple will replace my iBook G4 12" with a MacBook? I think that that won't happen for another 6 months or a year, is that true.
    iBook G4, Dell 4550, Dell 2200, Toshiba AS257, iPod 3G 15 GB, 2, iPod G4 20GB, iPod Mini 1G 4GB   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Apple will make three repair attempts per unit and then they'll give up on it. When they decide to give up and replace your computer they will replace it with a current model most like the computer you have. If you have a 1.33 ghz iBook this would mean a 1.83 ghz MacBook.
But don't expect Apple to be willing to replace your computer. They'll replace every part in your computer on the first repair attempt if they have to. Logic board complaints usually result in apple replacing the logic board, keyboard, hard drive, etc. Basically when they repair a computer for logic board failure (the most catastrophic thing other than the monitor) you get almost a new system back.
