Require login password after 15 minutes

So I've got a late 2012 macbook pro model with osx 10.9.2. Before the update (back on 10.9.1) under my System Preferences' Security and Privacy, I had it set up that my login password would only be required after 15 minutes after sleep or screen saver begins. I liked it because in my job I'm constantly moving around and having to open and close my laptop. It was nice to be able to open it without having to do a password every time unless I had it closed for more than 15 minutes.
Now with 10.9.2 it will no longer do this. I still have it set to ask for the password after 15 mins, but the moment I close the lid and open it again, it immediately asks for the password. I have no idea why. Has anybody else had this problem or hopefully found a solution?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a keychain issue.
go to Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access
on the left, for Keychains, select login
for Category, select Passwords
use the search box to search for all keychain entries related to the password in question
delete that entry or entries
in the Keychain Access menu, scroll down to Keychain First Aid
enter your password, select repair, and start
I don't know if a restart is needed at this point but it wouldn't hurt.
you will have to enter your password again but this time it should stick.

• Can I set up a mail login password

Is there a way for me to set up a password for my apple mail so that other people that might use my computer (or in case it is stolen) do not have access to my email. I would like a way to keep it more secure without having to take the time to login/out of my computer account each time I use my laptop. Please let me know if there is a way to do this!
Erika

Set up the Security System Prefs to require a password after waking from sleep.
However, without actually encrypting your data, if your laptop is stolen, there is no way to keep someone from accessing your data.
If you just want to keep them from using your account, follow Barry's advice. On a similar note, you can change the password to your login keychain and set it to auto lock after a set amount of time. That way, none of your passwords are accessible without the keychain password.

• MacBook Pro late 2013 does not show login window after waking from sleep

MacBook Pro late 2013 does not always prompt for login, but opens directly to desktop, even though security settings are setup to prompt for password after 5 minutes. Up to now, this only has happened on battery, machine goes to sleep or lid is closed, 10 minutes pass, lid is opened and desktop is shown instead of lock screen. Console shows, that the machine was actually sleeping (10 min no log entries) and also does not show any error in regards to login window.
This behaviour occurs randomly and I could not track down any root cause/behaviour, yet. Sometimes everything behaves as it should.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Count me in, I have the same issue, and from what I read here, it looks like a Yosemite/SSD related issue ?
I'm not 100% sure if it started when I put a SSD in my old iMac 2009 (as a fusion drive) or if that's after that when I upgraded to Yosemite...
I did disable auto poweroff like suggested in another thread : Mac freeze during the night sleep.
sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0
We'll see if it helps.
It happens toughly a couple of times a week.

• Shift not accepted in windows 7 login password

shift not accepted in login password after powerup but is after restart.

Tried left and right shifts same problem.
This has been a problem for a few weeks. Virus?
Caps lock allows login but system is not usable due to keyboard mappings? hotkeys?

Hello _glen,
If the problem started a few weeks ago the quick easy solution is to restore to a time before it stopped working.
Without doing that we can try to diagnose the issue further to see where the problem is isolated to.
What make / model computer are you using?
Do you have multiple accounts on the computer? Does the issue persist across multiple accounts?
If you don't have the computer ask for a password on startup does the shift key not work within Windows upon wakeup?

• How to enable login screen which doesn't require a password

I'm setting up an image for a computer lab. The computers that are currently in this lab auto login. However, in the off case that a student accidentally (or maybe purposefully) locks the computer, we want them to be able to simply click the user account
picture and it logs in without asking for a password. The current Windows 7 PCs in this lab work that way, but whoever set them up can't remember how this was accomplished and I can't figure out for the life of me how to get it done. Currently, if I lock the
PC, it just brings me to the login screen with a blank username & blank password field.
These machines are not on the domain. Does anyone have any idea how to get this behavior out of the login screen?

BYPASS LOGIN
Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type netplwiz and press Enter. Remove the tick from “Users must enter a user name and password” > OK. You may have to type the user account name/password just the once to complete the process.
BYPASS ENTERING A PASSWORD AFTER WAKEUP
To bypass entering a password after hibernation, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Power Options > Require a password on wakeup (in the left pane) and put a check mark in Don’t require a password.

• When I go to a website requiring login, and am logged in automatically, I still get prompted by Software Security Defice for master password. New w/Firefox 24.

If I go to a website that requires a login & password, and I have it set up to automatically log me in, I get automatically logged in (it remembers by userid & password for that site), but the prompt from the Software Security Device for my master password appears as well. I can cancel the prompt and it goes away, but it shouldn't show up because I'm already logged in. This problem started happening after I downloaded Firefox 24 yesterday.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Note that Firefox Sync also requires you to enter the Master Password.

• In Yosemite, I can;t operate for more than a few minutes with Keychain or Safari asking for my login password. How can I turn this off, and still be safe?

Using Yosemite, I an't seem to work for more than a few minutes without being asked for my login password. Keychain wants it, Safari wants it, iCloud wants it..the list goes on. Then in 10 minutes or so, they all want it again. Passwords are being stored by Safari as usual, but new tabs or pages bring up the request. How can I turn this off and still have protection?

Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
3. Click the "First Aid" tab
4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
5. Close the Preferences window
6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
7. Enter your username and password
8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
"New Keychain"
7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.
The above comes from an article published on MacFixit.com.

• "Require password after screen saver begins" & "Start Screen Saver"

Hello All,
Can someone tell me what the UNIX command strings are to set 1) "Require password after screen saver begins" on, 2) "Start Screen Saver" to 15 minutes and (3) "Disable remote control infrared receiver" via ARD? I have over 100 clients and it would be nice to issue the commands instead of walking up to each Mac spread all over the campus. Most of the clients are running 3.3.1. Thanks!
Mike

Hello, Mike
There may be a command and the UNIX forums would be the place to really find the answer.
The problem is that each User has their own Screen Saver and Security settings. They are not global settings. If ARD is set up to access all of the other systems, then you can do it right from your office and flag which ones have been configured with the new settings with labels.

• Login/Password required when it shouldn't be. Why?!

I used to be able to visit this main website: gwbweb.wustl.edu
This should absolutely not require a password, yet when I type it in and press enter, this appears:
"To view this page, you need to log in to area “gwbweb.wustl.edu” on gwbweb.wustl.edu:80."
On some links of this website a password is required. So, even though the main page should not, I type in my login name and password. Still, no luck! Sometimes after I enter in the info, the page loads slowly, but never fully. It used to be fine, and all the sudden there is this change. I'd really appreciate some help. I just switched over and bought a Mac and am having a lot of issues, especially with Safari. Thanks so much.

Hello kepi:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
The password challenge comes from the web site, I think. Ask them why the PW is required.

This happened to me, too. I couldn't log in to ANY accounts on the machine. Restarted, failure again, restarted again.
Solution: Wait.
After restarting I let the machine sit for a minute. Then it worked!
I ran Onyx and repaired permissions. Big mistake, apparently. Now I have to type my admin password everytime I want to move or save. All my Office docs open as Read-Only.
