Require password 4 accounts in iChat 4.0.9?

Would love to know if I can require a password when switching to my AIM account while in iChat 4.0.9. I have looked all through AIM online as well as iChat and can't seem to figure it out.
Thanks!!!!

Hi,
I should have perhaps pointed out that you need to remove the Password in Chat as well in the one account that you want the Password to be asked for.
Your Specs say 10.5.8 so you should have iChat 4.0.8 (Or 4.0.9 if you have done some of the Security Updates).
You have posted in iChat 2 and Earlier and the process would be slightly different there due to the way iChat swaps Accounts. (you could only have one Buddy List active at once).
In iChat 4.x you can have several Accounts Listed in iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts and some can have Passwords Set and other not.
Another thing you can do is set the Access tab in the Keychain info panel to not allow iChat to use it. This may cause you more problems accessing it yourself though but may be useful if your children have their Own Mac User Account and you could set it in their Keychain.
The Keychain holds each set of User Name and Password separately so you should be able to set th Password info differently so that the @mac.com account/screen Name logs in and the AIM one asks.

  • IChat AV 5.0.3 requires password every time I launch the program

Does anyone know why this is happening? After the recent 10.6.4 update, every time I launch iChat a dialog box pops up with my MobileMe account name, which has a check box next to it, and an input field below it which prompts me to type in my MobileMe password. It never did that before. I only use 1 account in iChat. Does anyone know what's causing this to pop up every time I launch iChat?

    Hi,
The Password is saved in the Keychain and called by iChat when needed.
You can decide not to enter the password and iChat will ask each time it is needed (Although it sounds like you did not set it up this way).
Go to the Application/Utilities folder and open Keychain Access.
Open any Padlocks required to read the details.
Select the Application part in the lower left section.
Find your @Me.com name in the list.
Double click this to open the info panel.
    First check the Access tab
It may list "All/Any" apps or it may be set to Specific apps.
It it is set to be the specific option then is iChat Listed.
Next retrun to the left hand tab and then tick the Show Password Box
This will bring up a dialogue requiring your Password and show you several Buttons.
Enter the password and Click Allow Once.
The Info panel should now show you the password.
If it is Blank enter it and Save.
If it is "wrong" then change it and Save.
Next you should check if you "Own" and have permissions to write too the Keychain.
Open Your Home Folder (Little House icon) then Library and the Keychain folder in there.
Highlight the login.keychain with a single click
Do a "Get Info" (File Menu > Get Info or the keystrokes listed)
In this panel at the bottom is a tab to show who owns the File and it will also list permission as to Read and Write access.
You should own it and it should have Read and Write access.

I know my Apple Id (it isn't ".mac") and password but I can't log on to ichat.  I keep getting a message of password not matched.  I saw somewhere that my Apple id is the same as my ichat account.  Do I need to create a new account for Ichat?  I've already reset my Apple id password 3 times in the last 2 days.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
At one time only Email IDs from Apple (when it was just @Mac.com) were referred to as "Apple IDs"
Other IDs such as to log in to Discussions were know as Discussion IDs
Things like the Online Store and iTunes and Apple realising that people would prefer one ID to have access to Everything tended to move things together.
There can be a variety of combos now
    iChat Name
    @mac.com before MobileMe
    @mac.com post MobileMe
    AIM Names
    AIM names current
    MobileMe (@Me.com)
    Style

Email style Name Valid with AIM

    Other Abilities
May also be Currently valid email linked to a MobileMe account

May Not be a Valid Apple ID (was an option choice at one stage)
Is a Valid AIM Screen Name

Have been advised by my email provider (recently blocked account requiring password reset) that they will only reset the password after a proven anti virus and malware scan has been done on ipad and iphone. Is this necessary and if so what do i use

As KP has pointed out, there actually aren't any anti-virus programs in the App Store. There are a few that allow you to scan e-mail or stuff like that, and a few that provide you with information about malware and new threats for other systems. But none are available that can scan your iOS device for malware, because the security restrictions in iOS do not permit any apps to have that kind of access to anything. Which means that you also cannot be infected with a virus (unless you have jailbroken your device).
If your account got compromised, that had nothing whatsoever to do with your iPad. Someone simply hacked it remotely. Happens all the time. It's really amazing that, in this day and age, e-mail providers are so ignorant of technology and how their own systems get compromised that they would try to require you to run software that does not exist!

    Hello farahani hairon nizar,
If your Apple ID was changed from your old account, you may have to change it back to your old account to be able to sign out and then change it back after that is done. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • GDM requires password for a user even if one isn't set

Okay, GDM (more likely Pam) is pissing me off. HOW oh how do I get it to allow users to login without a password?
I can login to a console as "guest" without a password, so I know one's not set, but GDM prompts me for a password everytime.
How do I get GDM to NOT require a password???

I finally found a solution on the ubuntu forums: looks like you can do this:
    /etc/pam.d/gdm
    #%PAM-1.0
    auth requisite pam_nologin.so
    auth required pam_env.so
    auth sufficient pam_listfile.so item=user sense=allow file=/etc/gdm/nopassusers.txt onerr=fail
    auth required pam_unix.so
    account required pam_unix.so
    session required pam_limits.so
    session required pam_unix.so
    password required pam_unix.so
and then put your users (1 per line) in the specified file (/etc/gdm/nopassusers.txt).

  • J_security_check, JAAS, password expiration, account locking and portals

J2EE form-based authentication will redirect an unauthenticated user trying to connect to a secured resource to a login page and will 1) send the user to the originally requested page upon successful authentication OR 2) send the user to the error page in the event of authentication failure. There are a couple of problems that I have with this implementation - not with j_security_check specifically, but with the pattern generally.
There are several events that a Portal must manage beyond simple authentication validation. Specifically
    - Notify a user after successful authentication that their account has been locked and they must contact someone to get it unlocked.
    - Notify a user after successful authentication that their password is about to expire and offer them a choice between changing their password immediately or proceeding to the requested resource.
    - Notify a user after successful authentication that their password has expired and require that they change it before proceeding to the requested resource.
    - Notify a user after successful authentication that they don't have rights to access to the requested resource even though they've been successfully authenticated and offer to redirect them to a page that they are authorized to access.
I am currently investigating a scheme to solve these problems by using servlets for the login and error 'pages', having these servlets forward to different .JSP's based on roles, and writing some sort of JAAS module to add an access (authorization) role based on the password and account lock status.
Has anyone else worked on this kind of problem? Are there any efforts to extend the J2EE specifications to handle these alternate flows in the j_security_check activity.
I'm frustrated with each of the different container providers handling the JAAS Authorization differently. Further, since the j_security_check doesn't discuss how the server tracks the original request, each container provider has used a custom mechanism for keeping the original URI as j_security_check activity proceeds.
One final gripe, since the J2EE specification does not specify how to deal with JAAS, and further define a mechanism to getting the Subject associated with the current ServletRequest, all providers have done this differently too. Perhaps this was avoided as a 'non-goal', but wouldn't it have been nice to state that 'should a provider decide to offer JAAS based security, the implementation must...'?

I understand this problem... I dont know whether I have term this as a "Feature" or a "Drawback".
I have handled this problem differently in my project.
Scenario: When user does normal login
    1. User is displayed a home page. During this process, I create a session variable "Initialized".
    2. I check for this session variable in all the pages. If this session variable is missing then I redirect to the home page which in turn creates the "Initialize" variable in the session.
Scenarion: Session time out happens in Page 3
    1. User will be taken to login page.
    2. Typically scenarion, when user is authenticated successfully, Page 3 is displayed.
    3. I check for the session variable "Initialize" in Page 3. This "Initialize" variable will not be available due to session expiry.
    4. I redirect my page to "Home Page" which inturn creates session variable "Initialize".
    5. This solution solved the problem of showing home page when user does the login

  • Unexpected behaviour with "require password" and screen saver

In 10.6.x, I checked "Require password after sleep or screen saver begins" and after the invoking the screen saver (via a hot corner) moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard brought up a password dialog.
In Lion, this is what happens with the same settings:

That got posted somehow before I finished. Here is what happens:
The log in screen is displayed.
I select an account and log in.
The log in screen is displayed again.
I am logged in, but have obviously been logged out in the meantime.
This looks like a bug to me.

  • Force "Require password" option

Just curious if there is a way to not allow the user to change the "Require password" option (Security Prefs/General) in Lion (10.7.3). If I make the user managed by the server I could disable the pane, but I'd rather than do that in this case. Any way to do it with a standalone machine? I want to force the Require password option and not allow the user to disable it.
    Thanks.

My bad, saw the lock and assumed, didn't try it out on a non-admin account. Just did and its as you say.
You could make the user managed, turn on parental controls and not allow the user to run System Preferences but that seems a bit draconian.
It is possible by playing around with file permissions on the files that hold the prefs to prevent a user from changing these settings.  I was once able to help a user that wanted to prevent users from changing the Screensaver timeout value without also disabling other preference settings.  See How do I force a screensaver timeout?
Something similar might work in your case

  • Use Google Account in iChat ?

I have signed up to a Google account (don't mix this up with Gmail account) using my .me.com email which i would like to use in Google Talk, i can signin using my web broswer and accept friends as well as chat.
I am trying to add this to iChat and tried a number of times it does not let me sign in when i add the account via iChat. The eaisest thing is possibly just to sign up to a Gmail account but we all know what Gmails availablilty is like and that means signing up to an account something like [email protected] I would like to use on email for everything and I've spent hours scrolling through web forums to try and find the answer. I am thinking there must be a way as in Google's blog it did say that google talk is now availble to non Gmail users.
I have also tried signing in to iChat with an old Gmail account and it works no problems....
So my question is it possble to use iChat using a Google Account that i created using my me.com email address?
Really noping someone can provide me the answer

    Hi,
    People that have
    [email protected]
as their Buddy name are likely to be runniing a Jabber server.
iChat can join the AIM Service with valid AIM Screen Names.
These can come from a variety of sources:-
AIM  (In fact any Company that AOL owned that offered an Name at one stage, such as Netscape, Compuserve 2000 AOL and AIM itself)
Apple IDs ending in either @mac.com or @me.com  (Passwords need to be 16 characters of less.  Later iCloud issued @me.com names only work in iChat 6 or later )
Email IDs from ISPs that have an agreement with AIM like Apple do.
Note:  You can actually register any other email at AIM - and use an @googlemail.com name if you wished  (or a Hotmail one and so on).
Jabber Service Names come from  server.
Lets take Jabber Australia as an Example.
You register a Name (simplyliam) and you become [email protected]
There are many Public Jabber servers as you can see in this List
Essentailly you become the [email protected]
Both Facebook and Google run a Jabber server.  Both need you to enable Talk or Chat in your account settings in each site.
Note:  Google only do this Publically for their Mail Account names  (i.e the names can be used in other apps like iChat/Messages)
Google also do not stick to the naming format  (their server name is talk.google.com) which is why it is a separate entry in iChat.
You can add Buddies that are AIM valid to an AIM valid Buddy List.
You can add Buddies that are valid over Jabber to the Jabber/Google/Facebook name List.
Although the naming formats for both include email looking IDs and will therefore be accepted in a List the Buddy will always look Off lline.
NOTE:  I have seen cases where people have registered their GoogleMail ID was an AIM Name and they appear as AIM Buddies  (I have also seen Hotmail email names registered the same way even though they are also MSN names).
It is so long ago that I set up my Google mail account I am not sure what email I may have used as a secondary contact address or Confirmation email address.
(EDIT:- I looked it up and it was a dial-up account I had before that).
As I said before, at one time you could add other types of Google account by entering them as a plain Jabber Account and then changing the server name in the iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server settings tab to google.com
This has not worked for about a year.
So there is no way to Login to GoogleTalk without it being a GoogleMail name (No matter what ID was used to create it.)
There is also no way to have the @me.com name appear instead of the Google name. (well, unless you typed in that your first name was simplyliam and your last name was @me.com when you set the account up).
Whist a Google Name of any sort that looks like an email ID can be registered at AIM as a Screen Name it will mean that the name is an AIM Name and still would not be able to directly contact Jabber/Google/Facebook Buddies in iChat.
I have tried to show with examples that what you wnat is not possible.
However the broad way AIM allow other Email IDs to be used /registered as AIM valid names can supply a sort of work around in one direction (getting everyone on AIM) it does not work in ther direction you seem to want it (Somehow to use either a Non Googlemail Name or a AIM name over Google/Jabber).
Although this may not be the answer you wanted I hope I have been clear enough.

This worked for me. I may have an extra step in here but try them all and see if it works for you.
    1) Go into the Account preferences and change your password.
    2) Log out
    3) Go back into Accounts and change your password back to what it was.
    4) Open the Security panel and see if the "Require password..." checkbox is unchecked. It was for me.
    5) Check that box again and everything should work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Unix command to require password to wake computer from sleep or screensaver

    Yo folks,
Just as the subject says, is there a Unix command we can send that turns on the option to require password when the computer wakes from sleep or screensaver...which is the first option in System Preferences --> Security?
I looked through the systemsetup commands and didn't find anything.
    Thanks!

    Run the following AppleScript:
set items_1 to items -18 thru -2 of (do shell script "ifconfig en0 ether")
    set items_2 to ""
    repeat with this_item in items_1
if this_item is greater than ":" then
    set items_2 to items_2 & this_item
    end if
    end repeat
    set the_path to "defaults read ByHost/com.apple.screensaver." & items_2
set old_string to do shell script the_path
    set new_string to (items 1 thru 6 of old_string) & "askForPassword = 1;" & (items 27 thru -1 of old_string) as string
    do shell script "defaults write ByHost/com.apple.screensaver." & items_2 & " '" & new_string & "'"
The necessary plist key is part of an array, and is in a file which has the computer's Ethernet address in its file name, so the script needs to handle both tasks. This change will not show up in the GUI until the account logs out and back in.

  • How to make an account in iChat with Apple ID but no .mac?

    Hi everyone,
my Apple ID is my email adress but not ending with @mac.com or @me.com. How can I make an account in iChat with my Apple ID without making an extra ID with an @mac.com name?
    Thanks

    Hi,
An Apple ID that you may use for Logging in to Discussions to Post and may also link to your iTunes account and the Apple Store purchases is not the same as an Account/Screen Name for iChat.
@mac.com names were at one time given out when you purchased the .mac service (predecessor to MobileMe).
However trial versions on .mac allowed the name to work in iChat after the trial was up (As well as Lapsed Paid for ones)
The Email services stopped at the end of the trial or if you stopped paying for the service.
However when MobileMe started and replaced .Mac people could elect to keep their @Mac.com names
Therefore @mac.com name may or may not be valid email addresses.
Since then Apple have allowed new @mac.com names to be created to use as free iChat names (not valid Email Addresses)
Apple names ending @mac.com and @Me.com (MobileMe) are valid AIM screen Names in iChat. (Agreement between Apple an AIM)
(MobileMe is free during the trial period but requires Credit Card up front and Active discontinuation before the Trial is up and also does not work after the Trial is cancelled)
You can also Use AIM names Register here
These tend to not have any @something.com suffixes.
You can also use any GoogleMail ID if you enable Talk on your Google account.
Using a third Party Jabber app you can register a Jabber ID (Also looks like a email address) as most Jabber servers doe not have Web Browser accessible registration pages.
    Summary.
An Apple ID created to Login into Discussions is unlikely to be linked to iChat.
(it can be done as you say with @Mac.com or @Me.com names)
An Apple ID can be linked to iTunes and for making On-line Store purchases.
There are options to creating an iChat ID.
AIM would most likely suit you needs of not having an @mac.com or @me.com suffix
Jabber names look like Email Addresses but rarely work as such with the exception of GoogleTlak/GoogleMail IDs
    NOTES:-
A GoogleTalk or Jabber ID can add Jabber or GoogleTalk Buddies but not those that Login to AIM.
A Valid AIM Screen Name can not have Jabber/GoogleTalk Buddies added to it.
An AIM valid Screen name could be from AIM or Apple (@mac.com or @me.com) or from any other ISP AIM has an Agreement with for using their Email Address.
This last part means you may see Buddy's screen Names that have other @ type suffixes
In fact the AIM Registration page allows you to use any Email as the Screen Name (I have seen a Hotmail one used)
This means as both AIM and Jabber use names that end @server(mail or otherwise).com/net/whatever as there can be some confusion when adding Buddies to a Buddy List.
I hope I have been clear enough.

After I installed OS X Mountain Lion system, I can't use my Safari to log into my online banking and some other websites which require passwords. Can some one please help?

It could be browser incompatibility or something else. When you say you can't log in, what happens? Is the bank website generating an error saying you're not using a supported browser? Does the login form for your bank account display as usual, but once you submit the form to log in it doesn't work? Give me a specific step-by-step of what you're doing, such as...
    1. I load bankofamerica.com
    2. I type in my login
    3. When I submit, the page does nothing
Obviously that may not be your issue, but giving us details like that will help us come to a quicker conclusion.
