Requirement for RAC - Linux AS mandatory ?

Does the standard Linux 8 version can be used for RAC R2 or we need only Linux AS for the RAC configuration.
What is the linux requirement for the RAC R2 configuration ?
Thanks,
Ashok

Thanks for the info.,
could you tell me what firewire components you are using? I know that we need the fireware cards in the pcs/servers, the firewire hub, and the firewire drive. However, I am having difficulty identifying which firewire components to buy, ie., which ones are compatible with Linux Red Hat (AS). The Red Hat HCL revealed nothing to me. Any info you could give me on the components you are using would be greatly appreciated and save me a lot of time.
Thanks again,
Steve K.

    Hi All,
Could you please suggest the Hardware required for practicing RAC at home.
    Regards,
    VN

    Hi, "user7202581",
For practicing purposes, you could consider a VBox / OVM based setup at home. We have used those for Hands On Labs in the course of Oracle Open World more than once. I recommend you use a machine with at least 8GB memory and dual core (HT enabled) processors. Some configuration examples: Lenovo Laptop, ThinkPad, 8GB, 320GB HDD, i5 dual core, 2.5 GHz, Win 7 or a Mac Mini, latest version, i5 dual core, 2.3GHz and 8GB memory would do the trick for a two node cluster. Note that I mention the hosting OS in case you use VBox. For OVM based setups you either have to use a dual boot system or use a dedicated machine. You will be somewhat restricted with respect to the hardware failures you can impose on this system obviously (due to the VM setup), but for practicing purposes, you should find those environments sufficient, I think. Also see: RAC on OVM templates: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/rac-template-11grel2-166623.html
    Hope that helps. Thanks,

  • Fusion middleware system requirements for oracle Linux 7

    Hello,
I'm currently studying document E54272-01 (Oracle® Fusion Middleware System Requirements and Specifications
12c (12.1.3) September 2014) in order to install Fusion Middleware 12c products on a Oracle Linux 7 server.
The "Linux Operating System Requirements" section doesn't include Oracle Linux 7 system requirements, does it mean Fusion Middleware 12c products are not yet certified for OL7?
PS : I'm unable to find a pdf version of E54272-01 document, if anybody has the URL, I'll appreciate.
    Daniel

    Daniel,
The compatibility matrix for 12.1.3 can be found here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/fusion-middleware/documentation/fmw-1213certmatrix-2226694.xls
As you will see, for now only Oracle Linux 5 and 6 are compatible.

  • Packages required for 9iDS Linux

What packages I need to install when 9iDS complete is to be installed on Red Hat Linux 8.

When You run ./orainst as oracle user Red Hat check all needed RPM's. If You dont have any of needed RPM's OUI send message failed so You should download those RPM's. I think that you need kernel 2.4.9-e.25 (i have Red Hat advanced server 2.1, dont know for red hat 9), glibc and pdksh RPM's are always needed for oracle.

  • Help required for RAC backup

    Hello Support,
We have Oracle 11g R1 RAC enviornement on Windows 2003 Enterprise.
We want to take full database backup to restore in case of any failure.
We are planning to install Oracle on single instance to different hardware and location having same windows.
I appreciate to have proper steps for analysis please.
    Currently what are considering are;
    - Shutdown RAC database
    - Copy control/datafile/redo log files
    - paste to other hardware
    - using Oracle configuration manager to create template for the existing RAC database.
please add further steps for anaylsis
    Thanks

    Copy the Cold Backup.
Startup one instance of the database.
And that's it. You are DONE.
If you want to do a cleaner job you can also
Disable the second instance (thread) and then drop the Redo Log Groups of that thread on the Single Node after you have copied the Cold Backup.
I agree with your customer and disagree with the other posters in this thread. A Cold Backup Restore is much much easier than an RMAN Duplicate.
The documentation, unfortunately, covers scenarios where you delete an ORACLE_HOME and/or a Node from an existing RAC Cluster :
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/rac.111/b28254/adddelwin.htm#CHDFAEJB
See the ALTER DATABASE commands : DISABLE INSTANCE and DROP LOGFILE clauses.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28286/statements_1004.htm#i2079942
Do these only the the second database server where you copy the Cold Backup.
Do NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT do anything on the actual RAC environment !!

  • SAP - Oracle RAC - Linux - VMware

    Hi,
we would like to install SAP on a virtual environment (VMware) on Linux RedHat  platform.
For the database, Oracle RAC is certified with OCFS2 (1.6) only with Oracle Linux and not RedHat Linux 5.
Can we intstall Oracle RAC database on 2 nodes with Oracle Linux and OCFS2 and other SAP components on Redhat Linux 5 ?
Are there any issues with SAP matrix compatibility ?
    Thank you!
    Dan

    Hi Audun,
    Thank you for the links.
I can see the ASM support is new (2.2.2011)
On Note 527843 from 25.01.2011 - Oracle RAC support in the SAP environment
Using raw devices and ASM (Automatic Storage Management) is not supported in the SAP environment. In the case of ASM, there is an exception regarding the Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) and the voting disks
    and
on Note 1550133 - Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) from 2 Feb 2011 they support ASM but with restrictions:
ACFS is required for RAC installations with ASM
To use ASM now, you have to migrate your database to ASM manually
Some important functions of SAP BR*Tools like backup, restore, recovery, tablespace and datafile management are not supported at the moment
Support for tablespace and datafile management is planned for Q2/2011
Also ASM instance will introduce another layer in the system with its problems, failures and resources consumption. I see on the Oracle Metalink alot of problems related to ASM. From the marketin point of view is ok, let's oracle do everything but I think if you will keep it simple it will be better.
I didn't figure out if you can directly install Oracle 11.2.0.2, they say "Allows direct SAP system installations with Oracle 11.2"
We have a vBlock hardware with flash disks as FAST Cache so I believe with 1TB of cache IO will not be a problem.
    Thank you!

I an remember this off the top of my head ...
For practical purposes the answer is yes.
    - either ou would have had to have taken the associated training course ...
    - or you would have had to be an 11g DBA OCP (and training is required for that unless you certified a long while ago as a 7(8?) DBA OCP before the requirement and have upgraded become 11g DBA OCP by upgrades)
Is classroom training Mandatory to get EBS Certification? (R12)
I cant remember / don;t know this off my head.
    But Oracle's websire tells you:
    Visit http://certification.oracle.com
Locate you certification ... and mandatory training will be detailed there.
The required training courses are detailed.
If yes, then what is the cost for this...http://education.oracle.com will give details of training courses and costs for your country.

  • Tasks that require ROOT for RAC DBA

Our Networking Team and Applications Team are going through some growing pains. We are trying to resolve what permissions should be given to a RAC DBA. Our RAC DBA is responsible for Oracle Clusterware, Oracle Automatic Storage
Management and Oracle RDBMS software. The OS, Server and Storage Subsystem are the responsibility of the System Administrator. We have the following Environment:
    Production and Test (RAC)
Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 update 2
Oracle Clusterware 11.2.0.2 -- Grid Infrastructure
    Oracle ASM 11.2.0.2
    Oracle Database 11.2.0.2 EE
    Development (Single Instance)
Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 update 2
Oracle ASM 11.2.0.2 -- Grid Infrastructure
    Oracle Database 11.2.0.2 EE
As the RAC DBA, I have identified the following areas that require ROOT for RAC and Single Instance DB's; however, I understand there may be more:
    diagcollection.pl
    - diagnostic tool for Oracle Clusterware and may be requested by Oracle Support
    ocrconfig
    - to repair ocr configuration issue (add, replace and remove requires root)
    srvctl modify
    - required root to change ip address
    tar
    - TAR Grid Infrastructure Directory structure preserving files with ROOT ownership
    cluvfy
    - cluvfy fix it scripts need to run as ROOT
    - some cluvfy commands under 11gr1 would only run properly for -post cfs check as ROOT in our last installation
    ASM Libraries
    - ROOT required to install and configure ASM libraries
    fdisk - l
    - this is used to see disks attached which is relevant when ASM disks are not mounted
    /etc/sysconfig/oracleasm
    - oracleasm loading configuration file
    /usr/sbin/oracleasm
    - to make disks available to ASMLIB (scandisks etc.)
    /usr/sbin/asmtool
    - asm config tool due to bug
    asm cluster file system
    - some commands require ROOT (mounting etc.)
    - acfsutil
    /var/log/messages
    - loading errors ohas and oracleasm would be logged here
    cvuqdisk
    - needs to be loaded for new install
    root.sh
    - script needed to run at install, upgrades and patching
    oraInstRoot.sh
    - script needed to run at install
    rootupgrade.sh
    - upgrade script
    roothas.pl
    - upgrade script
    ocrcheck
    - check for ocr corruption
    - corrupt check portion requires ROOT
    - oracle local registry
    Grid Infrstructure
    - .runInstaller from Grid Infrastructure
    - includes upgrades
    asm configuration assistant (asmca)
    - configuration of asm diskgroups
    - vol mgr for asm disks
    ocrconfig
    - ocr configuration tool
    - ocr import
    - ocr export
    - oracle local registry
    ocrdump
    - used to check ocr backup file
    - oracle local registry
    opatch
    - patching grid control requires ROOT
    crsctl
    - Startup and Shutdown Oracle Clusterware, Oracle ASM and Database/Instance
    - restore voting disk
    - restore ocr
    - set log for dynamic debugging
    - check install periodically
    srvctl
    - modify nodeapps (ex. ip address change)
    - add filesystem (acfs)
What other items would a RAC DBA need to have ROOT access for?

I'd like to say at the outset that this is a scenario and I am NOT in anyway choosing who does what. A simple -- not so simple -- discussion of roles and responsibilities and associated privileges. If you say that the System Administrator is managing the Grid Infrastructure then this would include all Clusterware and Storage Management (ASM) activities. The System Administrator would manage the OCR and Voting Disks, backups, integrity checks etc. The DBA would then only be responsible for adding the storage within the database itself like assigning tablespaces that reference ASM Disk Groups. This doesn't mean that the DBA can't see the ASM information in the database. The major challenge seems to give your DBA access to the OS, networking and storage tools to preliminarily investigate what they believe to be a OS, networking or storage issue. Without this crossover, your System Administrator may be doing work that is unnecessary. A DBA should have clear understandings of what performance the storage system, cpu, memory and networking should be providing and access to the tools that allow them to understand what side of the fence an issue resides.
There seem to be choices for an organization.
    1) Is there a position called RAC DBA or is the RAC portion managed by the System Administrator.
    2) If a RAC DBA exists then what should the System Administrator be responsible for
    3) What access is need for an existing RAC DBA?
    4) How will access privileges be given to the RAC DBA?
    5) other considerations regarding security?
I agree that there needs to be crossover regarding handling workload and issues. The agreements on roles and responsibilities shouldn't stop the crossover but they should help in understanding who is ultimately responsible for certain areas of the system and application.
If this isn't happening at organizations then how is it handled? or not handled?

  • SYSTEM HARDWARE REQUIREMENT FOR ORACLE RAC +ORACLE GRID INFRASTRUCTURE

    Hi Guru's,
Can anyone of you explain me what exactly the system H/W requirement for Installing Oracle 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure along with Oracle RAC.
    I already have 8GB RAM,i3 Processor.

If you like to install RAC on vmware, this 8gb memory enough. you can allocate 2gb for one node and also other. So total 4GB enough for RAC installation.

  • Oracle White Paper- Storage Option for RAC. on Linux

    hi..
This in reference with White Paper.. Stotage Option for RAC on LINUX. Author- Umadevi Byrappa.
Which states on page 10: To Use NAS for RAC database file storage select the file system storage option in OUI. or the Clustered file system storage option in DBCA.
With which i disagree. File storage option of oracle 10g RAC only shows.
    1. Clustered File system.
    2. ASM
    3. Raw Devices.
When i try to select Cfs and select the shared directory on NFS it says. < Directory_Name> is not a clustered file system or Shared on Both <Server_1> < Server_2>. and at this point of time i m stuck.
    1. I dont want to use OCFS as its not supporting NAS.
    2. Selecting CFS doesnt recognise mounted shared volume as valid storage device option can only store OCRfile and CSS file.
    3. So, I have to use ASM.. with zero padded files..which i dont want to because no other option. ( PART NO. B10766-02 PAGE C-6)
Also, I would like oracle to provide Back up Recovery Option or Document which tells me how could i Recover Database when i use Zero Padded Files.
What would be the best Option in the above scenario ?
I hope by applying patch or with workaround somehow it shows Filesystem ONLY.I'll be the happiest man in this Case.
Any suggestions and corrections are most welcome. I wish i m wrong.
    Nadeem ( [email protected] )

NFS isn't a clustered file system at all - by RFC it is an exported file system with access controls
If your vendor offers an NFS solution over and beyond that - more power to them. However that isn't "NFS"..
    http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3010.html
You can use NFS in a clustered server environment (to mount apps, read only data and for synchronous access to files), however it doesn't support the concurrency out of the box for RDBMS transactions - if a vendor is supporting this promise then that is for you to decide.
However i stand by my statement that NFS is a file system exported across your network and not a full clustered file system.

  • Hardware requirement for a RAC

    Hi,
I want to create a 11.2 RAC with only one node.
I will add a new node in the future.
I've available a netapp for the shared storage (ASM).
So I need to buy only the server.
The requirement is that the server has 4 network devices (2 for public and 2 for interconnect in bond) 10Gbit
1 fiber channel to connect the storage and what else?
Need I buy the switch if I config only one node?
what's missing? exclude ram and cpu...
    Thanks

Yes, to implement RAC hardware is required.
    >what's missing?
A power cord is required for each device.

    [oracle@linux1 ~]$ srvctl status database -d orcl
Instance orcl1 is not running on node linux1Something is false!

By default, the server's default gateway is used as a ping target during the Oracle RAC 10g VIP status check action.
Upon a ping failure, Oracle will decide that the current interface where the VIP is running has failed, and will initiate
an interface / internode VIP failover.
In above case, we used just one node for CRS installation, so the VIP coudn't failover to other nodes and thus reported additional error like :
CRS-1006: No more members to consider
CRS-0215: Could not start resource 'ora.dbtest2.vip'.
    Try ->
A parameter FAIL_WHEN_DEFAULTGW_NOT_FOUND in the file
    $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/racvip to address this problem.
The following steps will fix the VIP starting problem for above mentioned scenario.
    1- stop nodeapps
    2- As root,
vi the script $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/racgvip and change the value of
    variable FAIL_WHEN_DEFAULTGW_NOT_FOUND=0 .
3- start nodeapps and you should see the resources ONLINE
You may proceed with netca and dbca to create a RAC database after this.
