Requiring Password from sleep or Screen Saver
I recently got a MacMini running OS 10.6 Before this, all my systems were running 10.5
In my old systems, I set it so once the system went to sleep, or went to the screen saver, you would have to enter the password to wake up (or stop the screen saver). That way if I walked away from the computer, my kids couldn't just jump on it. But in the new system, I can't find that option! It's not in the displays/screen saver control panel. It's not in the energy saver control panel. I don't know where it went. Ugh!
Is it no longer available, or can I just not find it?
Don't feel dumb. You learned AND you reported back to the gentle readers. Also, I've seen Apple "re-arrange" Sys Prefs with each new "cat." Keeps up all on our toes, i suppose.

My son has a habit of disabling the "Require password after sleep or screen saver begins" setting whenever my wife lets him play a game on her account. I notice every other setting on the "Security & Privacy -> General" tab is protected by the lock on the lower left corner. I've never understood why this one is not. Is there any way that I can get that setting to also be controlled by the lock?
Because that setting is specific to the account currently logged in and doesn't potentially affect any others or the system itself, which is the level in general at which administrator or root access is required.

Safari crashes when waking from sleep or screen saver
Since I upgraded to Safari 3.2.1, it's crashed on me almost every time I've woken the computer from sleep or from screen saver. I tried pulling out all input managers (Saft, etc.), but it made no difference. Here's the latest crash report. Any help would be terrific, thanks!

Require a password for sleep and screen saver
I click the box that is tick it becomes untick but when i close my laptop it ask me to enter my password in and then when i got to system prefferences it shows me the box tick when i unticked it.
Please helpBack up all data.
Quit System Preferences if it's running. Triple-click the line below to select it:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select Services ▹ Reveal from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch System Preferences and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the file you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the file you moved. -
Display won't sleep and screen saver won't sart
I upgraded to the new OS and the display won't sleep and screen saver won't come on. Help please.
Long shot.
Do a backup.
Quit the application.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates. -
After updating to 10.4.4 p/w not required waking from sleep/screen saver
I have this checked on in the Security Pref. panel, but the password dialog is not displayed. The computer just wakes from sleep/screen saver without requiring my p/w. Anyone else?
The important thing for the future imho, is to always Repair Permissions before & after any update... seems to ward off most of these problems. Of course that is only good if the disk is Verified once in awhile.
Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later to verify or repair disks...

In fact I'd start with those 2 now, if that doesn't help you may need to reapply some updates by getting them directly from apple>downloads. -
How do I remove password login when awakening from sleep..works on other computers but not HP....why??? Windows 8.1 ''''Hp all in one
Alsandra,
Welcome to the HP Forum.
Method can depend on your Operating System.
Windows 8.1 Example:
Windows key > type anywhere pc > Click PC Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options >
Under Password policy - Password required when waking this PC from sleep >>
Click Change
Confirm choice...
Windows 7 Example:
Control Panel > set icon view > Power Options > Require a password on wakeup >
Under Password protection on wakeup >>
CHECK Don't require a password
Click Save Changes
Click the Kudos Thumbs-Up to show you appreciate the help and time from our Experts.
Although I strive to reflect HP's best practices, I do not work for HP.

Turn off Sleep and Screen Saver
I am trying to write my first apples script that will set my computer and display sleep and screensaver interval to "never" when I connect an external display. This is what I have so far:
tell application "System Preferences"
launch
set current pane to pane id "com.apple.preference.energysaver"
tell application "System Events"
set value of every slider of tab group 1 of window "Energy Saver" of process "System Preferences" to 50
end tell
set current pane to pane id "com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect"
do shell script "defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver idleTime 0"
quit
end tell
The sliders in Energy Saver move, but reset when I open system preferences to check them. The screen saver interval will not change. Why can I not change its interval in the same way as the other two sliders? Any help is greatly appreciated.I wonder if it's possible to use GUI scripting to change those system preferences that require administrator privileges. Maybe that's the reason why the settings of the Energy Saver window were not saved after you moved the sliders. However you should be able to set the computer sleep time and the display sleep time with the following line of code:
do shell script "pmset -a sleep 3 displaysleep 3" user name "yourusername" password "your_password" with administrator privileges
On the other hand, using GUI Scripting, it should be possible to change the settings of the Desktop & Screen Saver window, since its preferences don't require administrator privileges:
tell application "System Preferences"
activate
delay 1
tell application "System Events"
tell process "System Preferences"
click menu item "Desktop & Screen Saver" of menu 1 of menu bar item "View" of menu bar 1
-- delay 1
set value of value indicator 1 of slider 1 of group 1 of tab group 1 of window "Desktop & Screen Saver" to 360
end tell
end tell
end tell
However, the value of the slider is not saved either when you quit the System Preferences. I don't know why. -
2012 21.5" iMac wake from sleep white screen probs
I have my new 2012 21.5" iMac. It's a top end one with fusion drive for ref. when I'm waking it from sleep I get a total white screen, with the time in digital in the top RH corner, and nothing.
First few times I had to hold down the power button to restart it. This time I shook the mouse and had the effect whereby it "colours/reveals" the screen when I move about, pixel by pixel if you understand?
By doing this I was able to see my login n,ae, clicked this and the screen went to my password ask screen, which was fine.
Bit worried on this as its a brand spanning new iMac. Is it just me or is my iMac (already) faulty? I'm sure I had it a few times on my old 2007 Alu iMac as well.
Any help?
CheersResolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
1. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
2. Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

Wake from sleep black screen.
Since the last "Security update" install my iMac G5 has a problem when I try to wake up. The sleeping light goes off but the screen remains black. I tried holding the power button to reboot. But, it doesn't work. I have to unplug the iMac to reboot. I unchecked the "put computer to sleep when possible" option. Ran permissions repair and daily, weekly and monthly scripts. And still problem. I use Time machine but only when I back up. If I do restore to last save. Will my current data be wiped?
Help,
DonaldUpdate
I thought I would try something that has been used in many trouble shooting situations where there might be a hardware or software problem with the computer. Creating a new user account. While I do have another account to sign into on this computer. I chose to simply "log out" and let the computer go to sleep and later see if it wakes up. Sure enough it does wake up. And acts normally. I'm not sure if logging out is the same as another user account.
What if there is something in my main account causing the "wake from sleep" problem. Outside of "permissions" and "running scripts" to clean up accounting. What can I use to trouble shoot which situation is causing this? I've used a couple of pref checkers but with no luck. Log doesn't show what happens while computer is a sleep. Only reports time it went to sleep. And nothing about trouble waking up. I have seen a lot of wrong permissions in cups iofn the reports. And there are not fixed when trying to repair. Especially, in the Colorsync first aid.
Any advice? Or should I wait for 10.5.6 to see if it corrects my problem before I reinstall software?

P.S.-the only software I have installed with nightly builds is the WebKit for Safari. It is much faster than Safari. Not sure why Safari is slugging/slowing it. -
I have a PowerBook G4 1.5 Ghz and I have this weird problem: if I setup my screen saver startup time before the computer goes to sleep mode, the PB stop responding, it freezes and it never sleeps. On the other hand, if I move the “start screen saver” bar to the “never” position, so the computer do not turn on the screen saver, the computer turn off the screen (expected) and after that, it enters in sleep mode without any problem.
If somebody could help me, it would be great!!!!
ThanksOh yeah I forgot to say I use an ETHERNET connection.

After waking from sleep, MBP screen shakes
Curious if anybody else has seen this problem. Periodically when my MBP (santa rosa) wakes from sleep, as best I can describe it, the screen shakes. Mostly vertically, I think. It's a behavior that looks like a loose connection, but it's so closely tied with my installation of Leopard, that I suspect it's a software issue.
Anybody else?I dont know what exactly you mean by "shaking" but what I just experienced here a few moments ago sounds kinda similar. My MBP, running on battery, went to sleep for two hours and when I woke it up, the screen went nuts. The brightness was irregular throughout the screen and the image started "flashing" intermitently. Think of a poorly-tuned TV channel. Sounded like what you said...a loose connection, except that it is probably not. I had to to a hard reboot. Toughts from anyone?

By putting the computer to sleep and wake every time when I use it is it hard the machine or is screen saver better than sleep. Which has less stress on machine..
It was designed to sleep. Let it sleep.
In sleep mode it draws 2.4 watts/hours.
When the screensaver is running it draws 140 watts/hour.

That is $50 USD/year if you choose screensaver versus sleep.
Let is sleep. -
"Connection Lost" on boot + Wake from sleep black screen and racing fans
When my iMac boots, I receive a "Connection Lost" symbol indicating the Bluetooth Mouse, yet Bluetooth is not turned on. How do I get rid of this? I have been having the "wake from sleep" issue for the last few weeks (black screen, racing fans) and wonder if this is somehow related.
I have reset pram, nvram, trashed the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, unplugged the computer, repaired permissions, etc. to no avail. I have to power down with the power button and reboot every time it goes to sleep. This is getting very annoying. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.I used to have a similar problem when I used a Kensington Turbo Mouse Pro (not wireless). The computer would wake from sleep in the wee hours on its own and in the morning it would be so hot I could fry and egg on it. The Mouse was obviously so sensitive that any slight vibration would trigger a signal to the computer and wake it up.
Also I got the connection lost message on startup even though Bluetooth was not turned on. I figured that for some reason the Turbo Mouse was not discovered in the startup process. When this happens the System gives a warning that since no mouse was connected, I would have no way to control the computer and it advised me to turn on a Bluetooth mouse. It would then search for one for a minute or two. I just unplugged the Kensington Mouse and plugged it back in and I would usually get a message informing me that a mouse had been detected and the startup process would continue.
As soon as I substituted a Mighty Mouse for the Kensington Mouse, everything has been just fine since. I also uninstalled the Kensington Mouseworks software and started using USB Overdrive which gives far more options and a far better Mouse feel than the Apple Mouse settings.

Moving a pic from text to screen saver
I have a casio gz comander. how do i transfer a text pic to my screen saver???

Hi buckster,
Please note that your phone has a Wallpaper and does not have a screen saver by default (unless you downloaded a third party screen saver application), if you mean to use a picture you received by text as your Wallpaper then save the picture to your phone first and then follow the instructions below:
Touch a picture to view the controls. Touch Menu > More > Set as Wallpaper.
You can find these instructions on page 168 of your Casio G'zOne Commando User Guide.
Note: Verizon Wireless does not provide support for third party applications. If you downloaded a third party screen saver application please contact the developer for assistance.
