Rescue and recovery not working

I wiped my hard drive and installed Ubuntu. Now I need Vista back to use some testing software for my state bar exam. Rescue and Recovery discs as well as f11 system restore keep giving me a startup error. Is Vista gone for good? Lenovo wants to charge me $45 to send discs that will work. Can get an an .iso for this version (Vista Business 64 SP1, I think) somewhere and use my product activation key on the bottom of the PC? I don't have time to search the forums and i'm not really an expert. Please help.

  • Rescue and Recovery Not Finding Backups On USB Drive During Restore

Currently running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a W510.  Rescue and Recovery cannot find my backups on the USB drive when trying to restore.  They can be seen when not in restore mode.  There are two partitions on the USB drive.  The second contains the backups.  I also tried plugging the drive into a server to access it as a network drive with the same result.  R&R version 4.30.0025.00.  I do not believe it has changed since I started the backups.

Just a think, I'm pretty sure is about your version of R&R. Just between R&R4.30 and 4.31 is not compatible.
Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information on it.

  • Rescue and Recovery not recognizing USB DVD writer on X200

I have a SAMSUNG SE-S084B USB CD/DVDRW that reads/burns DVD-R ok in ImgBurn. I already have backup made on the hard drive by RR.
I tried to use the Rescue and Recovery Advanced mode -> menu-Advanced -> "Copy backup from hard drives" to make a set up of backup on the DVD-Rs. However, RR doesn't recognize my USB DVD writer, and therefore I cannot proceed the backup.
Please advise how to make backups on a DVD for Thinkpad X200. Thanks a lot!

    I got it!
You just need to be patient.  It can take up to two hours.
I wasted about 30 minutes in the fine quality customer support of inner-city Atlanta just to be told it takes that long.  30 minutes.
I am extremely unimpressed with Atlanta customer service, and the rep's advice after 25 minutes was that he was going to send me a couple more recovery disks!  He had no idea about anything I was talking about.  I complained to the manager who finally told me to just wait.  However when I complained to him he thought it was a joke.
Customer service in Lenovo, especially their Atlanta location is a farce.  You're welcome for me having to sit through that.

  • Rescue and Recovery not finding my cd drive

I have a t510 and the cd drive does work, but trying to create a backup to cd fails due to the program not recognizing my cd drive.
I have updated the software, checked for drivers, etc...
    Any suggestions?

I've had issues on ThinkPads running XP where some silly utility like Sonic DLA grabs the CD/DVD drive and prevents other utilities from accessing it.  I was able to fix that by finding the DLA tab in the drive's properties and killing it.
I hope they aren't shipping that kind of crapware on 510s, but thought I should mention the possibility just in case.
Hopefully Vince69's suggestion will get you going.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4 DOES NOT RESCUE/COPY LARGE FILES?!

    Hello all,
Thank you in advanced for helping me out/any helpful advice you may have.
    System:
    Windows XP Professional
    T61
    4 GB RAM
2.50 Ghz Dual Core Intel Processor
    120 GB Hard Drive
140m nVidia Quadro video card (256 MB available memory I believe)
    Problem Summary:
I ran into the unlucky computer problem of having a Microsoft.net framework addon for Firefox 3.5.3 result in a fatal interaction leaving me unable to boot up in both safe and normal mode. If you do have this addon, please uninstall it NOW, so that it does not happen to you. There is no current fix or patch for it as far as I know. Luckily, I have the (formerly) fantastic Rescue and Recovery 4 to backup my files and fix things.
So in sequence of what I did:
Tried several different attempts to fix problem to no avail (via google searches on the Rescue and Recovery Browser)
Decided that it would be best to just reformat the drive and start a clean install.
I had not done a real back up recently (several months due to my own carelessness and being busy).
I chose to do a full factory restore using the 'Rescue My Files' option, since I had never done a backup using the included Lenovo Software, I usually just ran my own manual ones in Windows.
To be on the safe side, I just decided to transfer my entire hard drive directory 'C:' to my 500 GB External Western Digital Hard Drive. I know I didn't really NEED all the files (like program files I would just need to reinstall anyway). I just wanted to return my computer to how it was as fast as possible.
Rescue and Recovery registered as copying all my data (rougly 50-60 GB) of data to my external USB Hard Drive.
I then unplugged my External USB Drive From the computer once it said it was complete. Rescue and Recovery proceeds with the factory restore.
Things are going well, factory restore is successful, no problems yet.
Once Windows was functional again and I had remade my usernames and settings just as it was before the crash, I plugged in my External HD again to restore my files.
Every file that I copied was there EXCEPT FOR MY MOST IMPORTANT ONES. It appears the directory, 'C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\My Documents'
    AND
    'C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\Desktop'
DID NOT COPY. I DID A DOUBLE CHECK, and the program said that all files had transferred successfully and I saw the directories on the USB Hard Drive in the Rescue and Recovery View. (I did not do a double check on another windows computer with my USB Hard Drive, however as I did not have access to one at the time and I was trusting in the Lenovo software, which did actually manage to rescue all the files, except for my most important ones.)
    Is there anyway way that:
That because these files were so large (probably account for 50% of all data copied to my external USB Drive or 10-15 GB a piece), that the Rescue and Recovery file simply "passed over them"? The other files appeared to copy perfectly fine.
There was an error with the program, like a file size limit cap that Rescue and Recovery cannot surpass so they were just skipped over?
My own carelessness? Are all the root files not selected when you choose the entire 'C:' Drive as a directory? I did just choose to copy/rescue the entire 'C:' Drive and everything else (besides my two most important files) seemed to copy over so I do not beleive that this is the case.
I did not individually, select each file in the 'C:\Documents and Settings' because I assumed that it would select each of the root files within it. (Is that not the case?)
That the files are 'hiding' somewhere due to their large size?
    Most importantly of all:
IS THERE ANYWAY THAT I CAN RECOVER MY DATA? There is about 2 years worth of photos, music, documents, etc. that I would like to have back that I do not have a recent back up of.
If anything, does anyone know WHY this happened? It was my understanding that Lenovo Rescue and Recovery was some of the best software for emergency crashes out there. And now it has failed me miserably. I'd at least like to know why it happened so that I may not repeat my mistake (or put too much faith in Lenovo) for the future.
I've run some data recovery software but I know it will not recovery all the files that I once had in their state before my hard drive was reformatted back to factory settings.
    Thank you,
    -nofeet3
    Justin

    Hello , and ARGH !
I AM HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM RIGHT NOW !
If anybody could help this would really be appreciated .
    Here is the story
    Lenovo SL500
    Windows XP SP3 I think
    Specs maybe not too important
My computer has some corrupted file and will not boot in normal or safe mode . When I try to do either , it starts booting , but before it finishes the load-up-windows screen , it displays an error message which says
    " lsass.exe - System Error
the endpoint format is invalid "
and then goes no further , and the machine simply restarts itself again and would do this indefinitely if I didn't stop it .
SO when it starts booting and shows the Lenovo Logo , I press the Lenovo Help/Tool Button to enter Rescue and Recovery [not sure what version it is , I cannot find information within it] and it gives me the option to Rescue files before recovering the system . I have the same problem as Nofeet3.
It rescues all the small files
BUT WILL NOT RESCUE ANY OF MY IMPORTANT FILES
CERTAINLY IT DOES NOT RESCUE ANYTHING BIG [or bigger than roughly 2mb]
It rescues picture files BUT WILL NOT RESCUE MUSIC FILES !!
It may not even rescue bigger picture files , but I haven't noticed any pictures it has not copied since I can't go through ALL my picture files to see exactly what it has / hasn't copied.
However , not a single music file is copied.
It will NOT show up on the hard drive . What is strange , is when I try to plug the hard drive back in to try and copy the music files again , as I tried it a few times , it asks me if I would like to Write these files over the files already there , as though it has already copied. I check the hard disk , and these fils have definitely NOT copied onto the Disk . They are nowhere to be found .
I don't think the files are hiding , but if they are , maybe somebody could tell me where.
I suspect though that Rescue and Recovery has "recorded"  the files as having been copied , some kind of record , EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVEN'T !! Or if they have , they are absolutely invisible . WEIRD !
    nofeet3
It is NOT because you selected the whole C drive , and is not due to any carelessness on your part. I have selected all files individually , and have tried time and time and time again , when I plug the ext hard drive into my other laptop to see if the files copy , they don't . I have tried this over and over and over again desperately all today , it is not working , even going so far as to select individual files rather than bigger directories to try and transfer in smaller in smaller batches ,just in case it couldn't handle large transfers all at once . That is not the case either . It just simply will not transfer files roughly bigger than 2mb . NO MUSIC !! THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING !!
I am not sure at present whether this program can rightly be called "Rescue and Recover". It is one of the main reasons I selected Lenovo  , and this is not a good demonstration of it's abilites at all .
    PLEASE HELP ME !!
ANY HELP WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED !!
Thanks so much in advance for any help anybody can give , and best regards ,
    Carl .

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.3 for Windows 7, installation

    Hello,
I purchased my system June 16, 2009 with Vista downgraded to XP Pro so I was not able to purchase a upgrade disk from Lenovo.
This week I purchased the Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium upgrade package at a local store.
I did the upgrade (clean install) Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on my ThinkPad T400 type 2764-CTO. Also successfully installed all Win 7 64 bit ThinkVantage software with System Update 4.
I downloaded Rescue and Recovery 4.3 for Windows 7
The documentation for the installation of R&R 4.3 is difficult to comprehend and I could not find a post on this board that deals with my topic.
The recommended procedure before installing Rescue and Recovery on computers running the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows 7 is:
you must download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package (x64) SP1.
That was done with no problems!
To make the Rescue and Recovery program work with Sysprepbackup in the Windows 7 operating system, you must download and install the Sysprepbackup accessory package.
The Sysprepbackup operation changes in the Windows 7 operating system because a new version of Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) is built in the Windows 7 operating system. When you run the System Preparation Tool (Sysprep) and use the /generalize option, the Sysprep operation disables Windows RE by removing the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) entry to the Rescue and Recovery Pre Desktop Area (PDA). To make the Rescue and Recovery program work with Sysprepbackup in the Windows 7 operating system, you must download and install the Sysprepbackup accessory package.
and here starts my problem installing the package!
    Instruction:
To install the accessory package in the Windows 7 operating system and take a Sysprepbackup on a USB hard disk drive, do the following:
Type the following commands to start the Sysprepbackup process using administrative privileges: cd "\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery" rrcmd sysprepbackup location=U name="sysprep backup" The "...run sysprep now..." message displays. Note: Before you take a Sysprep backup on the USB hard disk drive, make sure that there is at least one backup on your local hard disk drive.
Go to the C:\Windows\Systme32\Sysprep directory and launch the sysprep.exe file. The System Preparation Tool window opens.
Be sure to select Quit from the Shutdown Options drop-down list box. Click OK to save the setting. The Sysprep process begins.
When the Sysprep process is completed, run the msi file that you downloaded using administrative privileges. Wait until the package is successfully installed.
Restart your system. Then, it will automatically boot to the PDA to continue with the Sysprepbackup process on the USB hard disk drive. For the detailed parameters about the restore operation commands using RRCMD, refer to the Rescue and Recovery 4.3 Deployment Guide. Software versions to use with this release.
3.At the end Install the Rescue and Recovery 4.3 package.
Ok that should be simple to do.
What is "Sysprepbackup" and do I need to follow the installation procedure above to be able to install and run Rescue and Recovery 4.3 for Windows 7. I dont think I need to or want to do a "Sysprepbackup on a USB hard disk drive". or may be I will when I understand what it is.
Can I simply install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package (x64) SP1 and  the  the Rescue and Recovery 4.3 package.
    Thank you
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I installed Win 7 Pro 64 on my T400, ran TVSU and installed R&R 4.3. Fortunately, I didn't read those instructions first, or I might not have done it
Have you tried just installing R&R? If it needs anything else, it should ask for it during the install. IIRC, it does require the VCC+ package.

  • Rescue and Recovery with T40 booting the system (XP) without restoring factory configuration

    (plus bas en français)
    Hi,
I've a T40 which I want to restore the factory configuration.
I've installed the up-to-date version of Rescue and Recovery but :
    - when launching Rescue & Recovery from XP, it does not offer to restore the factory configuration
    - at least, this is feasible when I press the "Access IBM" blue button when starting the computer...
    - ... even if factory configuration restore is available there, it does not work. Indeed, it asks me to confirm and then starts the computer again without restoring anything.
Can someone help me please ?
    Bonjour,

    hey sylvain,
for the Rescue and Recovery to work, did you make a backup of the system via recovery media ?

  • Rescue and Recovery restore does not work because of incorrect display size

I am unable to restore my system when booting Rescue and Recovery from the Service Partition or DVD. R&R configures my monitor resolution as 640x480x16 but displays as if there we many more pixels available. The result is that only a portion of the screen is visible and crucial commands are cut off and unusable.
I have read elsewhere that this might be corrected by updating the DisplayResolution parameter in the WINBOM.INI files found in the \MININT and \MININT\SYSTEM32 directories. I have tried this, setting DisplayResolution=1024x768x16, resetting to the default 640x480x16 and even removing the parameter altogether, all to no effect. My monitor always comes up at 640x480 and screens are always cut off.
A puzzling feature of this problem is that Opera help screens do not exhibit this problem. They display at an appropriate size, maximize correctly and so on.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Herb

When you receive a laptop from Lenovo they do not give you Windows 7 discs. So there is no way to do a srt. All I want to do is get the Msata drive to boot and run the os and all my loaded programs. This way it is faster and more efficient. Is there a simpler way. Please help I have only got about 40 hours into this mess. Thanks for any help from the experts.

I'm a bit confused about the process you are using and what you are trying to do.
    If I understand you,
you currently have a working 500gb hdd with the operating system, your programs and your data.
You want to move your operating system to the mSATA drive and have your computer boot from there.
you have made a set of recovery disks using the Lenovo program. This is intended to restore your system to its original state (no data or extra programs)
Here are a couple of options
You can create a "backup and recovery" set of DVD's using the Windows built in programs (click the 'Start' button, then type 'backup' into the search box at the bottom) that will back up all of your system (OS, programs, data, setting etc.)
Use a stand alone program like Acronis to create a clone of your current disk
    Thereafter
Remove your current 500gb drive from your machine
    Install the mSATA drive
Restore whatever image you want (the Lenovo recovery, the Windows restore or the Acronis [or whatever program you used] image)
Reinstall your 500gb hdd and rename that drive to a letter other than 'C'

I looked into my Event Viewer and got a hint. Also, knowing that my anti-virus program,
BitDefender, has a feature that prevents modification to the registry without permission from
me, and I hadn't been asked for such, I decided to turn that feature off and try again.
That worked, and I now have the latest version of Rescue and Recovery installed.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.21 problem: Restore System not working

    Hi,
I've got the following problem: on Vista Business x64 I run RnR frequently to ensure a proper and recent backup in case my HD dies. Now I have a 2nd HD at home and wanted to try if the system restoration process is working like I expect it should - it doesn't!
I save the Backup on a USB HD...
I inserted the new, empty disk into the pc (removed the normal one) and booted with the usb hd connected. No problems starting RnR with the thinkvantage button and beginning the restoration. After quite some time it was finished and I was prompted to restart, which I did. Nothing happened apart from the PC claiming "NTLDR missing" or something. When I watched the content in Windows with the HD connected with a usb cable, it was partitioned in 2 partitions (as it should) but the content wasn't even remotely the same! I read in the forums that maybe the problem was due to a version upgrade from 3 to 4 and made a complete new basic backup and restarted the process. This time with even less success, there isn't even a "NTLDR" error message or similar and the HD is in a single "EISA Partitio". I don't even know what that is...
So, how do I restore my System to another HD? It's really important that this works reliable as this is my computer for work and it would be terrible if data was lost!
Is it even possible to back up the system reliable with RnR?
    Regards,
    Daniel

  • Rescue and Recovery Password not Accepted

There is a previous message with the same title but, it is marked solved.  The solution does not work for my machine.
    My ThinkPad T2300 (0768 -2UU) has crashed.
When I press F11, the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 3 screen appears.
    - I assume it is Version 3.
The Rescue and Recovery Workspace Logon window then appears.  It has  the following fields.
    - User Name: AutoFilled with my main ID (Jim).
    - Windows Password: blank
    - DOMAIN: Autofilled with Lenovo-xxxxxxxx
    - Check box: "I forgot my Windows Password"  It is grayed out!
When I put in my Windows Password, I get the following message.  "Authentication failed.  Please try again."
If I change to another id: Administrator, John etc. I get the following message. "The user has not been enrolled with the Client Security Solution.  Only enrolled users may log on or recover their password/passphrase."
When I boot the machine, the best I can do is to get into DOS.   I have no passwords set in Bios.  I have tried to remove the password with the following command  (C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove) .   I have scanned my machine and cannot find "app.exe".
How can I fix this problem?

    Hi,
based on the informations, that you provided, this looks, like if the RnR partition was configured as secure for your CSS application.
So here are the steps, on how to get rid of the password request:
    - start into OS
    - open CSS
    - go to Advanced-> Manager security policies
    - in this new window you will see on the left side the option "Log on to Rescue and Recovery". Please select it and on the right site you can choose the correct option, that you want to user. Or just dissable it.
Your situation is, that you, or someone have protected the RnR partition with the CSS security policy. The command, that you noticed, that is not for this purpose, because there are multiple ways on how to set a password into RnR partition:
    1) useind RnR => this is the option, where the command "pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove" would help
    2) using BIOS => this was only by older systems
    3) using CSS => this is the situaiton, that you see. The main hint is the domain field, which can be only comming from CSS
Let me know, if this helps.
    Cheers

  • My W500 can not install Rescue and Recovery

    Hi guys,
Has anyone encountered the same problem as I did when I tried to install Rescue and Recovery?
The process always stopped with error code 6.
    I am using Win7 X64.
    W500 T9900 8GB + TBs imageries

I was also having the exact same problem on my W500, but I did not have to download the full multilingual package to get it to work.  First I reinstalled windows, and used the "clean all" command before the install.
At the first setup screen during the Windows 7 install hold Shift+F10 - this will bring up the command prompt.  Type in "diskpart" then type "list disk"  then type "select disk 0" This number may be different depending on how many drives your machine has in.  It will then tell you "disk 0 is now the selected disk"  After this type "clean all".  You will see just a flashing cursor in the command window to tell you it is running.  This will take some time, and   WARNING:it will fully erase -write zeroes- to the entire drive.  Your data will be unrecoverable, and ALL PARTITIONS will be deleted.  Once it's finised it will give you a message saying Diskpart succeded in cleaing the disk.  Now the important part, type in "select disk 0" once again, then type "create partition primary"  This will prevent Windows from automaticaly created the 100MB partition on the drive durring the install.  After that type 'exit' and 'exit' again, and you can continue the setup as normal.
Once Windows is up you need to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008  from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ba9257ca-337f-4b40-8c14-157cfdffee4e&dis...
Once that is installed, restart and it should let you install Rescue and Recovery.
This worked perfectly for me, even though it is a little more complicated.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.21 - Will not use all the freespace on 2nd HDD

I have had this problem for a while and upgrading to the latest release of RnR does not resolve it.
I have a 160GB 2nd HDD in my Ultra Bay and RnR comfortably backs up the initial image and three incremental images using a total of 90GB.  However, subsequent backups are not made as the software reports that there is not enough space - even though there is some 40GB free and the incremental backups are always less than 2GB.
I am using this on a T61p if that is of any relevance.
    Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks

I looked into my Event Viewer and got a hint. Also, knowing that my anti-virus program,
BitDefender, has a feature that prevents modification to the registry without permission from
me, and I hadn't been asked for such, I decided to turn that feature off and try again.
That worked, and I now have the latest version of Rescue and Recovery installed.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.21.00.16.00 Did Not Install

I just used System Update to download and install Rescue and Recovery 4.21.00.16.00.
It told me that it did not install, but gave no reason and there were no error messages.
I tried it again and SU recognized that it was already downloaded, but the result was the
    same.
    Does that mean I'm stuck with 4.20.0511.00 ? ? ?
