Rescue and Recovery-old backups

Hi, I recently reinstalled my system (returned everything to "factory settings" etc.) I created some backups before I did that on an external drive, but now I can't see them using rescue and recovery! Is there anyway to get RnR to see these backups and restore individual files? Or am I SOL? If I can't use these old backups, is there anyway to delete them from the drive?
thanks!

Hi,
can you tell me, where did you stored the backups? On local HDD, or on HPA of RnR ?
Make sure, that once you reintalled the OS and you have it on the local HDD, then  I assume ,the backups are gone.
You can also check, if you have it on your local HDD by performing following steps:
- make sure, that you can view hiden and protected files
- go to C:\, or D:\ where you should see a folder called RRBackup, or similar -> This folder contains the backups
cheers

  • Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery - old backups still showing in R&R

When I initially set up my network and installed Rescue and Recovery, I created a network share that I did my backup to.  I reconfigured my network and deleted the network share (and the subsequent backup data) outside of Rescue and Recovery and did not delete the backups from within Rescue and Recovery.   Now, my problem is that R&R still thinks that those backups are supposed to exist and when I do a Delete Backups, they show in the list, but I cannot delete them.  If this were the only issue (showing in the list) I would just write it off as an annoyance.  The issue I have is without that network share defined and active, when you start R&R it appears to hang for several minutes and does not appear to be starting - after a few minutes, it pops up a window asking to define the network path.
Before I try uninstalling and re-installing (which I think I have done at least once), is there a way to clean up R&R and what it thinks about this network share and the subsequent backups?

Please take a look at this thread. I'm not 100% sure it's exactly what you're looking for, but may point you at the right place to look.

  • Rescue and Recovery: No backups available for "local hard drive" with Full Restore

I can see all my backups in "view all backups" and can restore individual files, although when I select the option for "full restore", it reboots my PC and brings up the Rescue and Recovery interface which gives me the option for "full restore".  When I select "full restore", it asks me to select the source.
As my backups are stored on my local hard drive, I select that source, however the scroll box is empty (no backups available for selection).
Can anyone recommend a solution to fix this problem, or should I remove and re-install Rescue and Recovery, then create new backups (and hope they appear in the list for full restore)?
I am running Rescue and Recovery 4.21.0016.00 on a Lenovo T61p with XP SP3.
    Thanks.
    Gary Grathen

    Also, I have RnR 4.00.0117.00.
Where do I find and how do I delete these massive files?

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.5: Boot Environment does not list Backups on USB Drive

    Hello,
I have a fresh installed Windows 7 on a X 230 and am now setting up my backup. The notebook came without an OS so I installed Win7, all drivers and the Thinkvantage Software myself. Then I made a backup with Rescue and Recovery 4.5 to an external USB 3.0 HDD. The Backup is listed in the Windows program, but when I boot to Rescue and Recovery, the backup is not listed.
Since there arent any options I could change during the backup or the recovery, I have no idea what went wrong..
    Thanks!

In the standalone boot of RNR, go to the advanced GUI, chose Restore.  After a few screens, you will see a restore from location, default is Local Hard drive.  This is a drop down list.  USB option is available in the drop down list. The USB must be connected during the standalone boot. If the backup is NOT the same UUID as your system, check the box that says show backups from all systems.
Also read my post dated Nov 22,2011 .  RNR backup reverts to local.  This may not apply to USB backups.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.21.0016.00 scheduler does not start RnR

The scheduler worked up to a year ago. Then it simply stopped operation. I tried different schedules - no effect. I changed the USB drive - no effect. I checked ...\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Scheduler\Tasks\Rescue and Recovery but I do not know ahich parameters to modify, eventually.
What can I do to re-activte the scheduler?

    Hi,
please tell me, what exactly do you see, when you try to select the USB HDD as the backpu location?
Is this the first backup, that you want to place on the local HDD and also on the USB HDD?
Please note, that in case you already placed some backups on the Local HDD and now you want to add an USB HDD, as the storage place for the incremental backups, then you might have these issue, because the USB HDD was not selected from the start as the secondary backup storage location.
Back to your situation: please tell me, what is located on the USB HDD? Are there some files, and was there any kind of RnR backup made?
Sorry for that many questions, but I just want to make sure, that I understand this situation correctly so that I can optionaly try to reproduce this situation.
Here are some advices, that might help out:
    - one of the recommendations when using RnR with USB HDD as a backup storage is to clear the USB HDD, format is, create a partition and clean this HDD. Once the First RnR backup is placed on this USB HDD, you can put back all your files on this USB HDD and can continue to use it as a backup and also as a File sotrage.
    - please also go into the registry :
    HKLM\Software\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\Settings\Backups
and make sure, that on the right side is the value of the "USBPartition Number"-key set to "1".
I have seen it sometimes to happen, that RnR could not detect the USB HDD, becasue this partition option want set to 0 or no value, which indicated to RnR that there is no option to use a USB HDD as a backup storage.
Pelase let me knwo, any update, so that I can try to help you out with this.
    Cheers

  • Recovering backup data from a previous version of Rescue and Recovery

    Dear All,
can you please advice how can I restore the system&data (Windows 7)
I created recovery CDs and did the full backup (USB drive)
I changed disk (diagnostic reported warnings for the old one)
    I recovered system from CD
I wanted to recover full backup/image from USB drive, however
after reboot R&R 4 starts and error message "... backup taken with previous version..." is displayed.
I wanted to recover single file (R&R 4.31)  from USB drive, however
error message "The list box identifierwas not found"  is displayed
What shall I do? upgrade R&R to 4.51? downgrade R&R to 4 (where are downloads)? something else? what R&R versions exist for W7?

  • N200 Rescue and Recovery - where does it store backups?

I've got an issue with the rescue and recovery on my laptop. I want to delete old backups and when I get my automated RnR pop up on a friday afternoon instead of doing a backup I click on the link that says "you can modify this schedule by launching RnR here". From that I get a list of all the old backups made on my laptop and the option to delete any one of them. I click on the delete button next to an old backup that's obviosuly taking up valuable HD space and a little window pops up telling me "Please wait while the backups are deleted" and then the little hour glass spins round and round for hours on end. I clicked this at 5pm this evening and it is now 11pm and it's still there. Don't think it's deleting anything and has just timed out. It's done this every time I try.
Is there a way to configure the RnR so that I can specify that I want the backup to go onto my external hardrive?
Where are these backups stored on my laptop so that I can go in and delete them manually as doing them vis RnR is definitely not working,
    Thanks

I would pull the hard drive and place it in an external
    usb enclosure.
Copy the important files off of it if possible.
You may not get it to boot again with out re installing windows,
or hard drive may be damaged.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.3 on Win7 doesn't see a backup on external USB hard drive - Model W510

I've run the Rescue and Recovery utility within Windows 7 on two different external USB hard drives thinking that maybe it was a usb drive issue.  When I open the R And R utility in expert mode I can see that both backups exist on their respective drives.  I planned on updating my hard drive so I made a full hd backup and the R&R startup disc to boot the laptop from.  The bios recognizes either external hard drive at boot with no problems.  It shows the names and "+" sign next to drives.  So I booted the drive at startup off the DVD drive with the R&R startup disc after I was sure that the bios recognized either external drives.  Then when I choose a "Full" restore is of course asks me if I want to use hd, cd/dvd, or external usb drive which I choose the later.  It then should show me the backup that I created earlier just as it did when I ran the utility from the Win7 environment so I can choose it to restore from.  But I get a blank box showing no backups when I run the 4.3 R&R Startup disc.  Again if I boot to Win7 and go into the R&R utility I can see the backup on the exact same USB external drive.  Then boot off the CD startup recovery disc and it shows NO BACKUP!  Help please!  I want to shelf my old hard drive "as is" and create the Restore onto the new hard drive but the utility isn't working for me.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hmmm,
Seems like that _should_ work.  Here's a way you might be able to finesse it:  go to the advanced R&R menu in Win 7 and create rescue media on your USB drive.  It's essentially the same process as creating the CD - it makes the USB drive bootable and puts a copy of R&R there.
There _should_ be an option to "preserve existing data" but be prepared to lose your existing backup and make it again.
Then just boot the external USB drive and see if R&R recognizes a backup image on the same drive from which you booted.
That's the way I usually migrate to new drives.  Maybe it will get around your mysterious problem.

  • Using Rescue and Recovery to make backups from 3 different machines

Hello, I have three Thinkpad laptops, T400, X61 and R61i. I want to back up them using one external HD. The HD is divided into three partitions, the smallest for X61, the medium for R61i and the largest - for T400. I backed up all my laptops into the proper partitions (base backups), but now, then I want  to make partial backups, they all are going to the largest partition (intended for T400). Is it possible (and how) to cause R&R to always use the same partition for each laptop while backing up it?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Please read the following post:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Rescue-and-Recovery-backup-partition-second-ha...
    From this post:
    (1) Learn how to change security/options to peak inside the RRbackups folder
    (2) The conclusion
outside of an existing RNR folder, For a NEW create RRbackups folder, it will choose the partition with the MOST FREE space.
    ===
I will offer some commentary and match it to what you are seeing.
    (1) What release of RNR are on the 3 machines? same release? The newer RNR  (been like this for a while), uses the UUID to separate backups within the SAME backup folder.
    (2) for the C drive hdd, you CAN select another  partition on the C drive hdd to hold the rrbackups folder, from the Advanced menu parms. This option is NOT available for second HDD.
    (3) You will always have a RRbackups folder on the C drive.  If you uninstall RNR, the C drive RRbackups is deleted.  ***** Any RRbackups on external hdd will remain***
    (4) What you want to do will not work. RNR is expecting one RNR backups folder on the external hdd, thus implying only one backups folder. From RNR windows, view backups will ONLY show backups that match the UUID of the machine RNR is running on. If you run RNR standalone, you can go to the restore panel and check the "show all backups from all machines" options. This should show all 3 of your machines backups. There is no advantage to have 3 partitiions for 3 backup folder.  Sounds nice, wont work.
    ===
I will walk you thru a basic how it works on your end.  Correct me if you see something else.
    (1) external HDD
    part 1. small.
    part 2. medium
    part 3. large
All new partitions. All empty.  Back up large machine, it will chose part 3, create RNR backups folder, Take a FULL base backup. It will store the backup location in the C \RRbackups and the registry. This entry in the folder is named 0.  It should be roughly 1/2 the size of the Large machine C drive. Lets say 39 GB.  Run the next run.  This is an incremental backup (your term = partial).  This entry is named 1, and will be 2 GB., etc.
You uninstall RNR. Reinstall, change location to Second. Run a backup.  This will be an incremental backup (2) and will continue where it left off. (ie, it should find the old folder with uuid inside).
    (2) the mess
You backup medium computer. It will find the part3 RNR backups but no matching UUID. humm.. Will it use folder on part3 or choose a largest free space partition, like part 2.    You will have to test.  I would vote for part 3.
    ===
    In summary:
I believe RNR is designed for only 1 rrbackups folder on an external HDD, regardless of the number of partitions. You seem to indicate you have 3 RRbackups folders on 3 partitions. Look inside each folder.  It might be just using part3 for all your backups and you just dont see it. (ie, were you using part 1 for small machine, took a backup, then added part 2 and part 3, etc). This might work.  Small machine is locked in on small part 1.  Large is locked in on part3. But if you uninstall RNR on small machine, reinstall, take backup.  hum.  It will probably switch over to part 3.  or find part 1.
This is risk and time you do not need to take.  You want a solid plan that works. Based on this mess, I think RNR folks decided to design only 1 RNR backups folder on external.

  • ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 delete backups on T60p?

I have been trying to delete old backups on t60p with ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4.21.0015.00 to make more room on my main and backup hard drives, but it says that I don't have enough room to delete the backup.  I also have been trying to figure out what are the best ones to delete, as some seem to be more complete.  The main drive has 8.26 GB and my backup has 1.74 GB.  Can I just delete the older folders on the hard drive?  Also, how do I create room on the recovery partition or remove it?  It is taking up half of my 100 GB, so I am constantly running out of room.
    Thanks,

    vguinnane, welcome to the forum,
in the advanced settings of R&R - view/delete backups - select the last backup and delete it on it's own, you should then be able to delete the other backups.
As the backups are dependant on each other deleting everything between the first and last backup will render the last backup useless, you must work backwards.

  • Rescue and Recovery - how can I move backups to another location

I would like to move ma backups from an external drive to other drive. I don't want to make a new full backup but I want to have access to all the previous backups but I just want to use some other external drive. I can't find an option in the Rescue and Recovery Software. Can I just copy  the files to the new drive? I am afraid that there would be an error when I try to recover from the backup if I just copy them. Anyone ever tried to copy the backups and then recover from it?

I believe you should not have a problem.  The \RRbackups is a "flat" file, geometry not a factor. If the backup external went from basic, to EFI, that might present problems.
What RNR version are you running?  Version  5.1 stores more device info/attributes on 2nd HDD, and multiple partitions on the C drive.
    Changes in this release:
    [New functions or enhancements]
    - Added an Active Directory Manager (ADM) setting to set the Create Rescue Media (CRM) function to external media.
    - Added support for the unattended backup when you log off the system.
    - Added support for the compatibility with the backup on any other computer that is in the same model with your computer if both computers are installed with the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.
    - It enables you to designate the hard disk drive where the Rescue and Recovery program stores the backup and designate the hard disk drive that you attempt to restore.Added support on the computer that is installed with more than one hard disk drive.
     ==
I dont think this is a issue with you.  It seems the comments support multiple HDD like 3 on a system, choose HDD 1, 2 or 3.   RNR 5.1 does add more registry entries to registry for  all HDD's avaliable. And maybe C drive, partition 1. D drive partition 2, on the same physical.  I want to backup C to partition 2.  I can't confirm this.
Added support on the computer that is installed with more than one hard disk drive. <release notes.  Boring, it has support 2nd hdd for years.
    ==
    (1) What size is your \RRbackups to external old?  5 backups, 32?
    (2) copy external old to new. The registry entries SHOULD not know  any difference. You got 5 backups on external.
    (3) Try a single file restore.
    (4) Take a incremental backup to new external.
    (5) 10 minutes later, try a FULL restore from item 4.
You might be the 1st user to ever do this, and it should work. I would take 1 last final backup to old external to be on the safe side of things.

  • Rescue and Recovery backup with external hard drive

When I first backed up my computer to my WD 1 tb external hard drive using R&R, boot files were placed on the drive.  Recently, some files I had corrupted my external hard drive and I had to fully erase it.  Now, after making the drive recognizable again, I went to go back up my computer using rescue and recovery.  This time, it asked me whether or not I wanted to make the drive bootable, I said yes, but an error popped up saying I needed 1000 more mb, even though I had 931 gb open.  The backup started anyway, but it did not include any boot files.  Is there a way to make the drive bootable the next time I backup?  What is the difference between nonbootable and bootable?  Help? Thanks.

I do NOT have a external Hard drive.  If you just zeroed the drive, it is blank.    Go into control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management.  See if you can get  a PROPERTIES of the external drive and post a Screen shot of that here.    This will show what partition(s) are there, Fat32 vs NTFS.  My experience is after you zero a drive, You have to boot your system, then use a Vendor (WD) standalone format utility or windows Disk manangement format, Make partition, etc.  The screen shot i need is the one that says: DISK 1  (d 298.09 GB NTFS
Healthy(active, primary partition).  This is what my 2nd drive, D, says. 1 partion on the drive.
When i added my second hard drive, it was blank.  Booted up, BIOS recognized drive, Then i Formatted it with windows disk managment.  I then pointed R&R to take backups to that drive.  Create rescue media then made a Master boot record, install standalone R&R boots files, then took the backup.   This makes my 2nd drive bootable, should i ever care to boot my D drive up and have R&R standalone program in control.  Thus i have 2 bootable drives.  C boots into windows, D boots into the rescue and recovery standalone program.  I can also boot my C drive into R&R by hitting PF 11 at startup (bios) time.
Which version of r&r you have? Which version of windows? Windows 7 changed the way Master boot records are written.
You can go into R&R, advanced menu,  create rescue media. Point to your External drive. WARNING. make sure the do not destroy existing  data block is checked.  IF YOU ARE brave, uncheck the destroy existing data.  This will erase everthing on the drive!!! <<Warning. And be sure NOT to  point to any drive you really love.
Buts lets  1st get the screen shot requested to make sure the drive is FORMATTED correcly.

  • How to manage Rescue and Recovery Backups

Hi I've been using disk image backup solutions since the days of powerquests Drive Image. And have had my days with Ghost and Acronis Trueimage. I recently built a clean Vista image on my T400, and I'd like to take advantage of the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery 4.21 tool since it the recovery technology is already part of my system and I have tested it once.
I'm used to the idea that a backup tool will produce an image file, which I can manage myself, moving to various media....hiding under my bed etc. With RnR, I've noticed it prefers to control the directory's where backups are placed (this is a bit annoying to me, but I can live with it, as long as it's isolated to the RRBackup directory - which it appears may not be the case). I do appreciate it's ability to specify various backup media locations (network, CD, 2nd HDD, USB) and recognize that it's a simple approach for basic usage.
Recently I've backed up my image to USB drive, and also to the local disk. I'd like to take that back up and split it up into DVD's and burn it to disk. I know there is a built in RnR feature which lets us copy backups from the local drive (why only local drive ??) to USB/Network/CD, but unfortunately the CD copy feature burns directly to my thinkpad burner...which is a CDR device, not a DVDR device. I'd like to use the DVDR device on my desktop...
Anyway, I'd like to know if there is more resources on how to manage RnR Backups. I found the following guide http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70344.html (which is hard to get on Lenovo's site...google finds it better), I'm still reading it, but so far it appears more focused on the pre-desktop area than backup management.
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Danielle,
Consider this allegory; factory settings will make your thinkpad like a never driven 0 meter car [with reference to software]. Hence it will be far-flung from it's previous state. Apart from what you have already saved on memory stick, all settings and the software you have installed on the notebook will be lost.
    I hope this helps.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.52 - Makes Full Image Backups?

So, this may seem like a simple question to some, but I can not find a conclusive answer yet.
I have Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery 4.52 - Windows 7 (64 bit) for my Lenovo T540.  Will Rescue and Recovery 4.52 create a full image backup such that if in the event my hard drive crashes, I can reinstall the entire operating system, programs, etc at one time, without having to reinstall individual software programs?
I just don't want to install Rescue and Recovery 4.52 because it is a large program, without it being able to do a full image backup.
    Thanks

In my personal opinion, Rescue and Recovery is obselete.  For Win7 and later, my advice is to use Windows built-in backup and restore.  You can create both a complete system image (what you are asking about), and also backup individual files/folders in your libraries.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/backup-and-restore
Rescue and Recovery was great for XP and earlier OS when there wasn't any built-in backup and restore functions.  But for Win7 and later, my advice is to use the OS built-in feature.  Hope this helps.

  • Rescue and recovery 4.21 backup stays at 0%

    Hi all,
I try to find a solution but nothing proposed on other threads worked for me up until know.
    Product: ThinkCentre M55e
Rescue and recovery 4.21 with latest patches
Operating system: Windows XP Pro - SP3
From the rr.log I see the following:
    Sun Aug 15 12:07:58 2010 RescueRecovery: Loc=8 NoPrimary=0
    Sun Aug 15 12:07:58 2010 RescueRecovery: WriteFile: Error 233
    Sun Aug 15 12:07:59 2010 RescueRecovery: getProxyPipeName-Empty buffer returned from WTSQuerySessionInformation1.
Sun Aug 15 12:07:59 2010 RescueRecovery: No user found to run command 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\msgbox.exe', waiting...
Then it stays at 0% and the only way to close the application is to stop it from Task Manager. Then and I have to uninstall and reinstall r&r in order to make the application operational again.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Until number 92 I see some information relevant to R&R, then I lunch the backup but do not receive any  other information in the Debugviewer log. After number 92 is only information about symantec live update.
I got below the same message in the rr.log
    Sun Aug 22 00:03:24 2010 RescueRecovery: Loc=8 NoPrimary=8
    Sun Aug 22 00:03:25 2010 RescueRecovery: getProxyPipeName-Empty buffer returned from WTSQuerySessionInformation1.
Sun Aug 22 00:03:25 2010 RescueRecovery: No user found to run command 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\msgbox.exe', waiting...
I do not get any help from the information above. Please have a look and let me know if this gives you any ideas what might be wrong in my RnR application. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling RnR several times but no luck.
    Thanks,
    gathan
