Rescue and Recovery PARTITION not accessible

Hi,
I just wanted to reset my Thinkpad R52 (1846-CG) back to factory settings and therefore attempted to enter the RnR partion. After I selected the appropriate option in the boot menu, I got the following error:
Inf file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 18.
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.
I googled this error message, but all I could find was help concerning Bart PE and windows installation from USB-drives.... However this isn't my Problem...
Can anyone please help me on fixing this?
Every Idea, hint and/or suggestion will be very much appriciated, THANK YOU !

Hi,
the file "txtsetup.sif" is a so called "load file". This means, that this file usually contains informations on the load process , when you are starting into a Windows Pre Desktop area. This file hase always his specific loaction and in your case, what the error message want to tell you is that this file is missing and therefore the system has no imput on how to load all the files and library files, so that it can load the GUI <Graphical user interface> so that you can use your mouse, etc.
So in this situation I assume following:
You get this message, when you start the system and press F11, or the blue ThinkVantage button and after a short while it just shows you this error.
So here is what I would do:
- if possible start into Windows
- start the repair Rescue and Recovery => this should trigger RnR to "recheck" if all the files and folders are on the correct loaction and should basicaly repair also this file.
Please note, that you must use the same RnR version, so that nothing will go wrong. I would advice to check localy on your system or user Add/Remove programs to reinstall RnR.
Let me know, how it went.
Unforatunatelly I have not experienced such situation with RnR, but I did experienced it during my multiple Image deployments, where I have used WINPE.
Cheers

  • Rescue and Recovery will not install on Windows 7 upgrade

I have a thinkpad SL500 that I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 a week ago.  I have tried to install Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery but get this error message during the initial install:  "Rescue and Recovery does not support installing from the operating system which upgrade from legacy preload system."
I did load Win 7 32 bit from a legacy Vista preload system.  I have been trying to install R&R v4.5.  Is there a workaround to get ThinkVantage R&R on this Windows 7 machine?  Thanks, John

Win 7 does come with it's RE environment.  On my pc I can:
    (1) boot into windows 7 (default)
    (2) PF8 boot windows into Safe mode, which will allow me to Launch the Windows recovery environment.  This is
mostly a Repair environment, but can invoke other items, such as Windows restore.  This is NOT an restore from backup tool , per se.
    (3) PF 11 boot into RNR standalone environment.
All 3 have Bootable software on my C drive, and entries in the BCD (boot control data). Could you document what your pc/laptop was shipped with from Lenovo.  An original windows vista or windows 7? A shipped Lenovo, with win 7,should have a Z partition and a X partition.  One has the RNR standalone, the other has the Factory install data to reset back to OBE, out of the box experience.
Did you purchase a WIN 7 DVD upgrade disc from a retailer? Could you also post a screen shot from Disk management that shows the attributes of the D drive.  I am trying to find out if the D drive is Active
Check under the status line,  HEALTHY(Active, primary partition). Did you try the Diskpart command?.
You do not need to worry about SYSPREP.  It is mainly an Administrator tool for deploying system images.
By the button, do you mean the Thinkvantage blue button?  This just tells the BIOS to boot into the RNR standalone environment.   My original system was a Vista.  Thus I have no experience verifying the X and Z drives.  This info is just from reading other posts.

As a side note, Does your win 7 support Bitlocker? Can you view the contents of YOUR D drive?

  • Boot into Rescue and Recovery but not Windows

Everytime my pc is powered on or restarted, it boots into Rescue and Recovery, but not Windows.
    What can I do?

    Hi,
first I would like to explain one thing, so that we are on the same page with the RnR partition.
Vista and XP are using different RnR partitions and the location of these aprtitions is placed on the HDD is different way, so that it can be used in conjuction with your Operating system.
So in the time, where you have used the XP and OS, the RnR partition was placed in the partition table on the end/back. DIrectly after you upgraded to the Vista and did not made any changes to the RnR partition, than it is still on the end/back, which is not the corect way. Becase the Vista should use the RnR partition, that should be placed on the begind/start/in the front of all the other partitions.
So in case there was no change made to the RnR partition, like relocation, or reinstall using the Vista RnR version, then you will not be able to boot into it.
So here is what I would advice you to do:
    - reinstall, or download and install the Vista version of RnR (the latest version) => this will rewrite the partition table and in case of need it will create the RnR partition.
    - use bmgr32.exe , which is located on your HDD by default to rewrite the partition table. Please start it from command line in follwing way:
    bmgr32.exe /phil
==> this will bring you all the command line options and you can use it based on this.
    NOTE:
Plase note, that once you captured some backups using the XP version of RnR , or a different version of RnR, then it's not possible to restor the backups using a different version.
Simple: you must use the exact same version of RnR for backup and also for the  restore process.
Let me know, if you have any more informations to this situation.
    Cheers

  • How to create rescue and recovery partition for my thinkpad edge 11

    Hi,
I'm using thinkpad edge 11 with win 7 home Premium 32 bit.
Before, i tried to restore to factory setting, there is a drive partition of rescue and recovery in my thinkpad.
But, when I was trying to restore to factory setting, I missed the steps and made the drive partition of rescue and recovery formatted.
So, now, I don't have it again in my thinkpad.
Then, after that, appeared another drive partition  in my thinkpad with name S: Sytem, beside C: WIndow7 and D: Data.
So, I need the solution from you all as knowing more about thinkpad edge in this forum.
    1. How I remove the unkwon drive, S: System from my thinkpad?
    2. How I can create again the rescue and recovery partition on my thinkpad(wih Win 7 Home premium 32bit installer inside plus all the drivers)?
    Thanks...

    Hello mate,
To restore the Q: partition you have to use the Lenovo Recovery Discs. Hope you burn them before erasing the partition, otherwise you have to order them from Lenovo.

  • Rescue and Recovery Password not Accepted

There is a previous message with the same title but, it is marked solved.  The solution does not work for my machine.
    My ThinkPad T2300 (0768 -2UU) has crashed.
When I press F11, the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 3 screen appears.
    - I assume it is Version 3.
The Rescue and Recovery Workspace Logon window then appears.  It has  the following fields.
    - User Name: AutoFilled with my main ID (Jim).
    - Windows Password: blank
    - DOMAIN: Autofilled with Lenovo-xxxxxxxx
    - Check box: "I forgot my Windows Password"  It is grayed out!
When I put in my Windows Password, I get the following message.  "Authentication failed.  Please try again."
If I change to another id: Administrator, John etc. I get the following message. "The user has not been enrolled with the Client Security Solution.  Only enrolled users may log on or recover their password/passphrase."
When I boot the machine, the best I can do is to get into DOS.   I have no passwords set in Bios.  I have tried to remove the password with the following command  (C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove) .   I have scanned my machine and cannot find "app.exe".
How can I fix this problem?

    Hi,
based on the informations, that you provided, this looks, like if the RnR partition was configured as secure for your CSS application.
So here are the steps, on how to get rid of the password request:
    - start into OS
    - open CSS
    - go to Advanced-> Manager security policies
    - in this new window you will see on the left side the option "Log on to Rescue and Recovery". Please select it and on the right site you can choose the correct option, that you want to user. Or just dissable it.
Your situation is, that you, or someone have protected the RnR partition with the CSS security policy. The command, that you noticed, that is not for this purpose, because there are multiple ways on how to set a password into RnR partition:
    1) useind RnR => this is the option, where the command "pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove" would help
    2) using BIOS => this was only by older systems
    3) using CSS => this is the situaiton, that you see. The main hint is the domain field, which can be only comming from CSS
Let me know, if this helps.
    Cheers

  • Rescue and Recovery will not open

I wanted to back up my system to an external hard drive after finding out that it hasn't been backed up in over 200 days even though when prompted periodically , I select the option to "back up now." However, it seems that neved did back up. When I tried to run Rescue and Recovery (4.21) from Start -  All Programs - ThinkVantage - Rescue and Recovery, nothing happenend. I restarted my computer and this message came up when it rebooted :
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    "Runtime Error!
    C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\rrpservice.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I do not recall 100% but I think I got a very similar error message, only worst situation.  I had to replace HDD because the original HDD crashed.  I installed a new HDD and when I went to re-store with the ORGINAL IBM LENOVO RnR + Product CD's, 7 in all, I got something like you got.  I called Lenovo and someone in the service department told me that because my T60 was out of warrantly I needed to buy a new set of CD's !   Interesting hey,  I told him that the Original CD's that came with the T60 had corrupted files and this from day 1.  Anyway, long story short NO WIN XP as of yet.  Good thing there is UBUNTU Linux.  Good luck with issue.

  • Lenovo rescue and recovery will not run a new backup

Tried several times to make a new backup using "rescue and recovery" (i've done this regularly over the years) .. But "rescue and recovery" freezes and then shuts the computer down. This has happened at least 4 times so far.

    1. What are the current and previous versions of R&R? When it was upgraded?
    2. Did you have the such issue with previous R&R version?
    3. Did you try to uninstall previous version and install the new one? Or reinstall the current version? How current vesrsion is upgraded from the previous one - manually or using System Update?
    4. Was your OS version upgraded from previous one? I mean as an example XP -> W7

  • Pavilion dv6709ax Recovery Partition not accessible to Factory Default Reset

Hard drive is full of old information (no longer requuired) and possibly infected with a virus. I wish to reconfigure the computer back to its original state to use as a backup/travel computer.
I have attempted to use the Recovery Partitiion in various ways to no avail. It was fine when the computer was first purchased.
I believe that I should be able to rebuild the contents of the recovery partition by downloading and installing appropriate HP files.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

The only way to rebuild the recovery partition is by booting from Recovery Discs to format the entire hdd and restore it to Factory setup. Did you make your Recovery Discs when you first got the laptop?

  • Rescue and Recovery Can Not Find Service Partition

Hi, I have an R61i, which was working great until my son switched it off without shutting down windows properly. Now I have registry corruption on my main Windows partion  (MUP.SYS hang).
Currently I have been without a laptop for over 5 weeks.
I have tried to recovery from service partition with R&R 4.21. However, when I try to use R&R it brings up the splash dialog but does not see the service partition or bring up the R&R menu options. I am assuming that service partition has been corrupted or deleted ??
Customer Support suggested I buy recovery disks, which I duely did for £45. However, these only work if the service partion is  present!
Is there any way I can re-format the disk and re-create service partition?
Given all the problems I had with the service partition and R&R next time I'm going to buy a different make and model.

    Hi,
I think your laptop is not set to boot from the DVD-rom. You have to 1st go to bios and set the 1st boot device to be the dvd-rom. After that, insert the recovery startup disc and it should take you to the recovery menu.
BTW, you should be able to recover from the service partition as long as you have not deleted it, even if windows is screwed up. Make sure you press the blue Thinkvantage button  or the F11 key at startup and only then will it take you to the recovery menu.
    Hope it works.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4 not working

We just received a M58 7360-APU to test with. Since we are using this machine for our next refresh, I'm creating an image for the machine. But first I needed to create a set of recovery disks so I could bring it back to original when I am done. I created a full set of restore disks using R&R 4. Now I'm testing the set. When it finishes, it reboots and starts running a repair on the installation. When it finishes, in the log it shows:
    Root Cause Found:
No OS Files found on disk
    Repair action: Partition Table Repair
Result: Failed. Error Code = 0x490
    Time taken = 6989ms
Can anyone tell me how to resolve this? I need to restore it because I need to get the Thinkvantage software off of it.

How many discs did you burn? A self made set of recovery discs for a T61 with Vista should be a total of 3 discs, 1x boot cd and 2x recovery dvd.  Maybe you only created the rescue disc??  More information can be found here

  • T42 (Type 2378) Rescue and Recovery text not showing up in GUI

I have a machine that I hit the IBM button to restore my system back to its factory settings.  It loads up fine but when I hit the [Restore your system] it pulls up a new window and has 3 bullets I can select from, but there is NO text on the window.  Not even the < Back or Next > or Cancel button texts are showing up. I need to restore it but I don't know which bullet to select and if I select a random one, the next screen pulls up but still no text.  Any ideas?

Thank you! I had to change my fast preview settings. I chose OpenGL Active instead of Wired Frame. Although, I'll have to play around with it because I got an error message last night that said it caused the program to crash.

  • Rescue and Recovery and mcafee endpoint encryption

just an fyi. Maybe it will save someone hassle. Apparently mcafee endpoint encryption and rescue and recovery are not compatible My company uses mcafee solution to protect data. IT installed corp image and wiped recovery partition. They also missed most of updated lenovo drivers. I have installed Lenovo solution center and followed all suggestios to update drivers etc. And then I followed its solution to install rescue and recovery... And after reboot i got a mcafee message that endpoint encryption is not installed... Apparently rescue and recovery modified MBR of the disk making laptop unusable. Now will have to chase IT guy who installed my laptop in order to recover it. Lenovo developers please add additional check into rescue and recovery install to at least warn user of potential issue if mcafee endpoint encryption is installed. Thanks.

I'm not sure what answer you are looking for.  R&R modifies the boot loader, and other software can also modify it.  From R&R perspective, we can't possibly know every other piece of software that modifies the boot loader, or know when an existing boot loader is already installed which is incompatible with R&R.
If your company uses Sophos Safeguard or WinMagic SecureDoc, instead of McAfee Endpoint Encryption, the same scenario would work.
More information about the R&R boot loader is in the R&R deployment guide here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM007642
McAfee should have tools that can repair its boot loader.

  • Rescue And Recovery On Clean Install Of Windows XP Service Pack 2

    Hey,
I have recently purchased a refurbised IBM ThinkPad T40 2373-82M laptop computer. When I received the computer it did not have any recovery partition or recovery CD's that came with it. I then installed my own personal copy of Windows XP Service Pack 2 on the machine and installed drivers and applications individually by downloading them off the Lenovo support website. However, I have attempted to install the latest version of the ThinkVantage Rescue And Recovery Program (Version 4.20) on my computer but I end up with the following error: 'There is not enough free space on the computer to install or upgrade the Rescue and Recovery environment'. When I did a full clean install on the system I deleted all partitions that were on the computer at the time during the Windows XP installation and made a single NTFS partition. There were two 20GB partitions on the hard drive when I bought it, but neither of them were the IBM Rescue and Recovery partition. Could it be possible for me to install this software on my laptop, and make a Rescue and Recovery partition, now and make it the same way it would of been when it left the IBM factory?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to download Rescue and Recovery

I've a K330B with Win7, 64bit. Since the stock Rescue and Recovery does not allow to back-up the 25GB of the service partition, I tried using the Rescue and Recovery for an Ideapad instead. It messed things up for me. So I went back to the system restore point, prior to installing the version for the ideapad.
Now my Rescue and Recovery won't work. It crashes each time I try to run it. I need to re-install it. I can not find the Rescue and Recovery software for a K330B Desktop with Win7 Home Premium, 64bit, anywhere on the Lenovo support site.
    Please help.

    Hi, divasthapa
When you press Enter at the Lenovo screen, what are the options that appear on the menu? There should be one for BIOS, one to resume normal setup, etc. But there should also be something about recovering your system or something along those lines.
    Thanks in advance,
    Adam
