Rescue files

I have a lenovo 3000 N100< I want to save some files to a DVD, when i run R&R, i go to rescue files, choose which files to rescue from the list of current hard drive content, then in step 3 it asks where do you want to store the files? I want to store or burn them on a dvd. BUT___ there is no option to save it to in the drop down list. Why can't i save my documents to a dvd??????

Hi,
in case you are backing up your files/data, then I would suggest you will do it from the PDA, which you can enter, when you start your machine by pressing the F11 key.
The backup location should be an external USB HDD (this is the most ideal and not a DVD/CD)
Cheers

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.0 on t43: can't access rescued files in Windows

Strange issue. My hard drive had a serious problem and I had to replace it. Before I did, I ran a rescue files operation, which apparently completed successfully. The problem is, my Documents and Settings folder does not appear in Windows or in DOS. If I run rescue and recovery from the USB recovery media, I can see the folders and all the files in Documents and Settings, and even open some of them using the internal browser. But when I start windows and open the hard drive, all of the other files (Windows, Program files etc) and folders are there, but Documents and Settings is not visible. Ditto for browsing using the command prompt. Really strange. As of now, I cannot recover my documents to my new hard drive. What should I do?

I had this same problem with my rescued Music folder in Vista SP1. Just figured it out!
Go into "Folder Options" in the Control Panel in XP or Vista (should be the same. Use Classic View) and uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files". This shows System files and folders.
Head to wherever you rescued those elusive files to.
Since I rescued the Music folder to my USB external drive, the folder F:/Users/Music so on and so forth, is now visible. The simplest way to get these files onto your desktop, Documents, etc (since you can't make them not hidden), is to simply copy the entire folder.
I suggest heading back to Folder Options and checking "Hide Protected Operating System Files" again. Don't want to accidentally delete something you don't want to!
Problem solved! I hope this helps! I just finished copying the files as i wrote this, and can confirm it works for me. Let me know how it goes for you!

update: You will need to keep the  "Hide Protected Operating System Files" unchecked until you have finished working with the files. To change the files/folders to "not hidden" check out this post: http://www.winvistaclub.com/forum/windows-vista-tips-tutorials/20554-create-super-hidden-system-fold...
You can only go one file/folder at a time. But for ALL 3,000+ music files in F:\Users\Ryan\Music\iTunes.... I only  had to unhide Users, Ryan, and Music so it wasn't so bad.

  • Help! System Rescue files corrupt!

I hope someone can help with this - my X61 w/ 32-bit Vista Business has never worked well, with persistent blue screen crashes, system lock-ups, and error messages. After dutifully downloading Windows updates (Vista SP 2 just made things worse) and new drivers I decided to start from scratch and restore the computer to the factory settings - i.e. wipe the hard drive and re-install Windows from the rescue partition. I backed up all my files and went through the steps on the Rescue & Recovery console, only to have the installation fail - it says the Windows files are corrupt and it hangs on the installation every time -sometimes with another blue screen.
So basically this computer is now dead in the water, and unfortunately out of warranty. Please - does anyone know of any way to restore the rescue partition so I can at least re-install the OS that this machine came with? Any suggestions appreciated!

    Addendum:
These two posts to the forum describe my problem pretty accurately:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Value-line/3000-N100-Resuce-and-Recovery-Issue/m-p/58326...
    http://lnv.lithium.com/t5/R-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/R61-Recovery-error/m-p/140884
I'll add that I've tested by RAM and hard drive with built-in and 3rd party utilities and they all seem to be OK. Also tried Spinrite data recovery on the rescue partition and it hasn't helped.

  • Dead drive, desperately trying to rescue files..

    Hi,
The SATA drive on my black Macbook has packed in without me backing up via TimeMachine.. (yes, we all learn from our mistakes the hard way, sooner or later, I guess) I'm desperately trying to retrieve whatever I can from it. There doesn't seem any hope as all I'm getting is that cursed question mark flashing, the machine can't find a drive to boot from. The one thing that slightly confuses me is although I can boot from SL install DVD, I can't do the same from Disk Warrior or Data Recovery DVDs.. Obviously I cannot run disk utility from the install DVD as there doesn't seem to be any drive to run repairs on. I'm thinking of running the OS from a firewire drive but can't even figure how to do that. Terminal commands are a no-go as I can't boot from Single User.
This IS the worst case scenario and I'm wondering whether any of you out there has ever dealt with such a state with success?

My drive is dead also, though it is still not showing it clearly!
I still have it and when I run a test on it (Mac or Win), everything look's OK - including SMART.
The most obvious sign was a slow system, showing the umbrella all the time, without an apparent reason. After a hard reset, it did not boot up at all.
I could recover most of my data by booting from an external drive with a clone of the system on it.
I say "most of the data" because, lately, for several months, I was getting "Error - 36" on some files, without being able to find out why. It was happening with photos in iPhoto Library and, now I know that is because I mostly used that library.
When I could not boot anymore, some other files got that error too.
The drive is the 120 GB Fujitsu, Mac Book came with. And, like I said, it is not totally dead: it has moments when it runs like nothing happened.

I would suggest you to buy a new drive, reinstall OSX and try to recover afterwards.

  • Rescuing files on a time machine sparesbundle image

I have a Time Machine backup on a Time Capsule that is obviously corrupt -- when Time Machine runs, deletes a previous backup and then stops and ejects the time machine disk image. I ran Disk Utility on it for over 12 hours, and it definitely found problems, but the repair process never ended.
I think I should start with a new sparebundle image (Time Machine was using one that I had created manually to limit the maximum size), but I'd like to try to copy the files from the old sparseimage file to the new one. Is this possible? Since the two files would have the same name (Nameofbackupmachine_ethernetaddress.sparsebundle), I would have to copy the old image to my desktop and then copy its contents using Disk Utility to the Time Capsule, right?

Probably not. And you really don't want to, anyway.
The Finder won't copy everything properly for the new backups to work with TM, because of the unusual structure of TM backups, using "multi-links." You can use the Restore tab of Disk Utility to duplicate a partition from one disk to another, but that won't work on a Time Capsule.
Ah, I was hoping that Disk Utility could do the duplication.
Even if it would, it would copy whatever is corrupted (or fail when it encountered it), and you'd be no better off.
Unless you think your TC is failing, Your best bet is to use Airport Utility to erase it and let TM start over.
Wait a second. The spareimage file is certainly corrupt, but why do I need to erase the entire TM? I have other stuff there as I use it as a file server.

Can Disk Utility copy the files to a new .sparseimage file? If not, I don't need to erase the whole TC, do I? I ask because I have custom-configured .sparesimage files that limit the maximum size (so that I can use the TC as a file server). A propos, size-limited .sparesimage files shouldn't have any inherent problems, should they?

I had to delete and start over.

  • (Solved) grub rescue file not found

I reinstalled arch, also installed grub with arch installation. After reboot grub gives that error.
    "file not found"
what should i do now? I'm writing from ubuntu live cd

First thing to do, Assuming an Error 15: file not found, would be to check your grub's menu.lst to make sure that it is referencing the correct partition and vmlinuz26. If you have a separate boot partition it should reference that partition and just use /vmlinuz26 (as explained on the following thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56251). However if everything there seems correct, you will have to post more information for people to help you, such as the contents of /etc/fstab along with your menu.list.
you can check the menu.lst through the ubuntu live cd by mounting the arch root partition (or /boot if you partitioned it that way) and opening /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Also, this might be of help http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1263009.

  • Rescuing files at a Genius Bar

I have a HD with a "problem that cannot be repaired" says disc utility.  So, if I cannot copy files off prior to erasing the disc, will an Apple Genius Bar have the ability to pull my files in a way that I do not?
Meaning do I waste my time drving the 40 miles to the Apple store?

    jfevans,
This is a picture postcard post of exactly why backing up isn't important it's critical. While this is tough to take right now because it's likely you have lost all the information on your HD unless you send the HD to a data recovery service you can expect to pay between $500-$2500 to recover your data! I'd strongly recommend that before you get your machine back that you purchase at a minimum 1 external HD and begin using Time Machine to back up your HD. I'd also recommend you read these two articles that discuss different backup strategies, while a bit dated they have lots of extremely useful information. Please click Backup Plan I and Backup Plan II.
    Best of luck!

  • CD-Rom won't read; Rescue files?

I have a CD-Rom (650Mb) archive, and I can't get the files to copy. At first the whole disk would not read (error you have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted click Ignore.). Now I can't get any of the files to copy (error -36). There are no visible scratches. I used Toast to make the backup, and I'm sure I used verify after making the disk.
I tried OS 9; I have not changed my configuration since I did this backup.
Any suggestions of software/apps. that will get these files off the disk?

    Bummer.
there are two possibilities I can think of. The directory is bad/borderline not readable (due to bad disc writing, a dirty laser in your player, or surface scratches.)
The data itself is bad (or no longer readable).
Do you mind taking this one step at a time to narrow down the cause?
Open the disk utility and then insert the CD. If it mounts - send back the results of selecting the CD and clicking the info button. I would expect something like...
    <pre> Name : my backup
    Type : Volume
    Disk Identifier : disk3s0
    Mount Point : /Volumes/my backup
File System : ISO 9660 File System
    Connection Bus : ATA
    Partition Type : CDROM_Mode_2_Form1
    Device Tree : IODeviceTree:uata

    Used : 84.9 MB (88,993,792 Bytes)
    Number of Files : 0
    Number of Folders : 0
    Owners Enabled : Yes

    </pre>
Also - how much are you willing to spend in terms of time and money to get this data back? There are commercial solutions at all price points (and you basically get what you pay for in terms of data recovery these days) - so knowing your intent will help guide the recommendations here.

  • TS2570 Macbook Pro won't boot + Rescue files + Wipe and Install

How it started: I was browsing the internet and when I clicked on a link the Macbook Pro froze so I waited 15+ min for it to get back to normal, since it didnt I decided to turn it off by holding the power button down for a fee seconds. After I turned it on again it showed a grey screen with the apple logo and it was stuck there forever.
    What I have tried:
    - Disconnect peripheral devices - All disconnected, still the same
    - Safe Mode - It starts the same then it turns off by itself
    - Reset the NVRAM / PRAM - Computer restarted with the gong and a white screen and apple logo, but it was stuck there forever (after this step I didnt see the grey screen again, instead it started showing the white screen every time I turned the Macbook on)
    - Disk Utility - Tried to repair the HD but it couldnt.
    - Reinstall OS X - Once I get to the screen where it tells me to choose an HD I cant continue because it doesnt show any HD to choose.
    - Boot DiskWarrior (3rd party) from DVD - Downloaded and burned the DVD with my PC, inserted it in Macbook Pro, tried booting it (C key while booting), I left the Macbook stuck there all night and nothing happened.
Seems like I will have to do a Wipe &amp; Install to restore the HD, but I teally want to rescue all my music before that. Any suggestions? I dont have a Time Machine backup.

You need this link to recover your data
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
    Also read this
My computer is dead, is my personal data lost?
And this link to fix your machine.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
    - Disconnect peripheral devices - All disconnected, still the same
    check
    - Safe Mode - It starts the same then it turns off by itself
    check
    - Reset the NVRAM / PRAM - Computer restarted with the gong and a white screen and apple logo, but it was stuck there forever (after this step I didnt see the grey screen again, instead it started showing the white screen every time I turned the Macbook on)
PRAM holds the splash gray screen image, white screen is the same thing basically without the gray screen
    - Disk Utility - Tried to repair the HD but it couldnt.
Did you try the Macintosh HD partition?, that's where your problem is
    - Reinstall OS X - Once I get to the screen where it tells me to choose an HD I cant continue because it doesnt show any HD to choose.
Should be Macintosh HD partiton, since to use Disk Utiity your command r booted from the Recovery HD partition
Since you were able to boot into Recovery HD to use Disk Utility, that means the drive is working that just OS X on the Macintosh HD partition isn't booting.
If your using a external boot disk like from 10.5 or 10.6, don't.
There is one more thing to try, hook up a Ethernet cable to your router or modem (must be reset, power off/on) and use command option r keys upon boot, this (if your machine is capable) will install Recovery HD from Apple's servers instead of from the boot drive, it takes longer.
BTW your signature says you have 10.8, but this was posted in 10.6 forums.

  • Laptop died... can I rescue files from Time Machine back up and transfer to my kids iMac?

Hi. Not sure this is the right forum, could not find a Time Machine forum.
My 18 month old white Macbook has died (screen and track pad). I cannot afford a new one. I have a time machine backup. Is there a way to either
    1. Take the HDD from the laptop and put it into an external HDD enclosuer, plug it into someone else Mac and access my Pages folders etc.
    2. Or can I swap out a HDD from another macbook, install the HDD from the dead macbook and use it as normal...
    3. Plug in my TM backup into another mac and (kids have macbooks and iMacs) and access my pages folders etc...
    4. Or do some other combination of things to get up and running until I can buy another machine?
Many, many thanks for your help.

As long as the machine that is recovering the drive is not older than what's on the drive, and it has enough room to support all the contents of the drive it should work with the Migration Assistant.   Otherwise a piecemeal recovery may be needed.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4 DOES NOT RESCUE/COPY LARGE FILES?!

    Hello all,
Thank you in advanced for helping me out/any helpful advice you may have.
    System:
    Windows XP Professional
    T61
    4 GB RAM
2.50 Ghz Dual Core Intel Processor
    120 GB Hard Drive
140m nVidia Quadro video card (256 MB available memory I believe)
    Problem Summary:
I ran into the unlucky computer problem of having a Microsoft.net framework addon for Firefox 3.5.3 result in a fatal interaction leaving me unable to boot up in both safe and normal mode. If you do have this addon, please uninstall it NOW, so that it does not happen to you. There is no current fix or patch for it as far as I know. Luckily, I have the (formerly) fantastic Rescue and Recovery 4 to backup my files and fix things.
So in sequence of what I did:
Tried several different attempts to fix problem to no avail (via google searches on the Rescue and Recovery Browser)
Decided that it would be best to just reformat the drive and start a clean install.
I had not done a real back up recently (several months due to my own carelessness and being busy).
I chose to do a full factory restore using the 'Rescue My Files' option, since I had never done a backup using the included Lenovo Software, I usually just ran my own manual ones in Windows.
To be on the safe side, I just decided to transfer my entire hard drive directory 'C:' to my 500 GB External Western Digital Hard Drive. I know I didn't really NEED all the files (like program files I would just need to reinstall anyway). I just wanted to return my computer to how it was as fast as possible.
Rescue and Recovery registered as copying all my data (rougly 50-60 GB) of data to my external USB Hard Drive.
I then unplugged my External USB Drive From the computer once it said it was complete. Rescue and Recovery proceeds with the factory restore.
Things are going well, factory restore is successful, no problems yet.
Once Windows was functional again and I had remade my usernames and settings just as it was before the crash, I plugged in my External HD again to restore my files.
Every file that I copied was there EXCEPT FOR MY MOST IMPORTANT ONES. It appears the directory, 'C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\My Documents'
    AND
    'C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\Desktop'
DID NOT COPY. I DID A DOUBLE CHECK, and the program said that all files had transferred successfully and I saw the directories on the USB Hard Drive in the Rescue and Recovery View. (I did not do a double check on another windows computer with my USB Hard Drive, however as I did not have access to one at the time and I was trusting in the Lenovo software, which did actually manage to rescue all the files, except for my most important ones.)
    Is there anyway way that:
That because these files were so large (probably account for 50% of all data copied to my external USB Drive or 10-15 GB a piece), that the Rescue and Recovery file simply "passed over them"? The other files appeared to copy perfectly fine.
There was an error with the program, like a file size limit cap that Rescue and Recovery cannot surpass so they were just skipped over?
My own carelessness? Are all the root files not selected when you choose the entire 'C:' Drive as a directory? I did just choose to copy/rescue the entire 'C:' Drive and everything else (besides my two most important files) seemed to copy over so I do not beleive that this is the case.
I did not individually, select each file in the 'C:\Documents and Settings' because I assumed that it would select each of the root files within it. (Is that not the case?)
That the files are 'hiding' somewhere due to their large size?
    Most importantly of all:
IS THERE ANYWAY THAT I CAN RECOVER MY DATA? There is about 2 years worth of photos, music, documents, etc. that I would like to have back that I do not have a recent back up of.
If anything, does anyone know WHY this happened? It was my understanding that Lenovo Rescue and Recovery was some of the best software for emergency crashes out there. And now it has failed me miserably. I'd at least like to know why it happened so that I may not repeat my mistake (or put too much faith in Lenovo) for the future.
I've run some data recovery software but I know it will not recovery all the files that I once had in their state before my hard drive was reformatted back to factory settings.
    Thank you,
    -nofeet3
    Justin

    Hello , and ARGH !
I AM HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM RIGHT NOW !
If anybody could help this would really be appreciated .
    Here is the story
    Lenovo SL500
    Windows XP SP3 I think
    Specs maybe not too important
My computer has some corrupted file and will not boot in normal or safe mode . When I try to do either , it starts booting , but before it finishes the load-up-windows screen , it displays an error message which says
    " lsass.exe - System Error
the endpoint format is invalid "
and then goes no further , and the machine simply restarts itself again and would do this indefinitely if I didn't stop it .
SO when it starts booting and shows the Lenovo Logo , I press the Lenovo Help/Tool Button to enter Rescue and Recovery [not sure what version it is , I cannot find information within it] and it gives me the option to Rescue files before recovering the system . I have the same problem as Nofeet3.
It rescues all the small files
BUT WILL NOT RESCUE ANY OF MY IMPORTANT FILES
CERTAINLY IT DOES NOT RESCUE ANYTHING BIG [or bigger than roughly 2mb]
It rescues picture files BUT WILL NOT RESCUE MUSIC FILES !!
It may not even rescue bigger picture files , but I haven't noticed any pictures it has not copied since I can't go through ALL my picture files to see exactly what it has / hasn't copied.
However , not a single music file is copied.
It will NOT show up on the hard drive . What is strange , is when I try to plug the hard drive back in to try and copy the music files again , as I tried it a few times , it asks me if I would like to Write these files over the files already there , as though it has already copied. I check the hard disk , and these fils have definitely NOT copied onto the Disk . They are nowhere to be found .
I don't think the files are hiding , but if they are , maybe somebody could tell me where.
I suspect though that Rescue and Recovery has "recorded"  the files as having been copied , some kind of record , EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVEN'T !! Or if they have , they are absolutely invisible . WEIRD !
    nofeet3
It is NOT because you selected the whole C drive , and is not due to any carelessness on your part. I have selected all files individually , and have tried time and time and time again , when I plug the ext hard drive into my other laptop to see if the files copy , they don't . I have tried this over and over and over again desperately all today , it is not working , even going so far as to select individual files rather than bigger directories to try and transfer in smaller in smaller batches ,just in case it couldn't handle large transfers all at once . That is not the case either . It just simply will not transfer files roughly bigger than 2mb . NO MUSIC !! THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING !!
I am not sure at present whether this program can rightly be called "Rescue and Recover". It is one of the main reasons I selected Lenovo  , and this is not a good demonstration of it's abilites at all .
    PLEASE HELP ME !!
ANY HELP WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED !!
Thanks so much in advance for any help anybody can give , and best regards ,
    Carl .

  • Problem with T43 File rescue

I've been having computer trouble, now it won't start up except in rescue in recovery mode. When I try to rescue files to my extrenal harddrive, it will work for the first few files, but then will give a message "Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)" and the file transfer to the external harddrive. I need to know what I can do baout this so that I can still get my stuff back, or else according to the program I'm risking losing it all to try and restore the system. Any help on this would be appreciated

it happened to my T40 before, i ended up wiping the whole harddrive and install an off the shelf XP pro. I think there could a corrupted file.

  • Need to rescue Garage Band Files with Data Rescue II - what kind of files?

    Hi all -
After a particularly gruesome computer crash, I am trying to reconstruct my lost files using Data Rescue II..... This program goes into the damaged hard drive and downloads all intact files it can find, but it is NOT able to label everything correctly. All it can do is divide things into folders - Audio files, document files, images, mail, misc., and movies. And within these folders are other folders - for instance, in the "Audio" rescued folder, there are hundreds of AIFF files, AIFF1 files, AIFF2, MP3, WAV, m4a, and m4p files.
My question is: can someone please tell me what the heck a Garage Band project file is? That would save me a lot of time in digging through all this material trying to find one....
(Don't get me wrong... I'm grateful to have stuff to dig through! I just hope my Garage Band files are intact and recoverable.)
Has anyone had success saving Garage Band files with Data Rescue II?
    Thanks in advance.

    Aaaagh!
I spoke too soon. Yes,I did indeed find the file that contained all the files I needed to retrieve (using Disk Rescue II). When my 6-hour download of the 78 GB folder finished, I check the files again, and they weren't located in the orphaned section, but in the Hard Drive section under the normal directory, in a folder called .Trashes - within that there was another folder called "501", which contained all the Garageband files I needed to retrieve. However, when I tried to open the downloaded "rescued" files, they were inside a folder called "Macintosh HD", which could not be opened, and I got a message that said "Could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges." Not only that, but even after 6 hours of (apparently) downloading the 78 GB folder, my hard drive, which had close to 83 GB of free space, said STILL had almost that same amount.
So did it download anything or not? What was it doing all those 6 hours? I have a file that I can't open, but apparently it's going to be empty anyway.
Here's the full story, for anyone with the patience to listen and offer advice. It looks like now I'm looking for a way to 1) get the permissions to open the .trashes file so that I can download everything, or 2) figure out a way to get Disk Rescue II to open the files and download them regardless of the permissions.
    Full Story -
I am pretty sure that my computer crash was caused by working with the newest version of Garageband 08. Ever since buying it and loading it, my computer has been acting funny whenever I use the Garage Band program - I could only record about one in three attempts since the computer kept freezing as soon as I finished recording a line. I would have to use force restart to get going again.
The day the computer crashed, I was working on a Garage Band project, which kept crashing, and I was also using Finale, Microsoft Word, and iTunes -- all of which are my normal procedure and I'd never had any problems with anything before loading the new Garage Band 08. (See my posts on other discussion topics for more details). After the last freeze, the computer crashed totally and could not be restarted - it would get to the gray screen with the spinning gear and just sit there while the fans ramped up to overload.
I used Disk Warrior to rescue whatever files I could onto an external hard drive, and I started to download all the Garage Band files. However, the "estimated time to completion" said over 6 hours , so I stopped the download after a minute or so and went on to rescue all the other files that were smaller in size and easier to download - I figured I'd set Disk Warrior to download the whole 78 GB set of Garage Band files overnight while I slept. But....when I went back to begin the download again, I noticed that the directory of Garage Band files went only to the letter "C" instead of all the way to "Z" like my original files had done during that earlier attempt to download. I am assuming that somehow, the directory for the files I download before aborting the attempt (A-C) got exchanged with the directories of the original version (A-Z), but the original directory was no where to be found.
I decided to try an archive install in the hopes that I could just restart my computer and get the files out by hand. The archive install went fine, and the computer started up fine and got to the log-in screen, which had changed. I now had two blanks - one for user name and one for password, instead of the choices of names. I tried all my user names and passwords, and asked my wife for her names and passcodes, but nothing worked. The computer had apparently re-set all its permissions and User accounts. I tried using Disk Utility to reset the password in its opening screens, but instead of getting several User options, the only one it allowed me to attempt was "System Administrator (root)", and even that wouldn't let me in to change any passwords.
That's when I downloaded Data Rescue II, which does seem to do a good job of locating lost files. However, since I didn't have permissions to open the computer the last time, I am still apparently facing the same thing when I try to access files copies OFF the computer.
So I'm not out of the woods yet. I can see the files on the Data Rescue screen, but I don't know whether they have permissions tied to them or not, and if they do, whether the system would let me since I don't know what the passwords and user names have defaulted back to.
    Any advice? Please?

  • How can I recover files from a hard disk that I erased using the Erase Disk command in Disk Utility?

    Thanks for your help!

True but a DVD is a lot less expensive than the cost of commercial recovery software. TestDisk is also free but it is a set of Terminal programs.
Yes, it's not for GUI only using folks.
Free Linux alternatives are awkward. First, you have to download a Linux ISO and burn it to a DVD. Then boot the live demo and install Linux. That requires first partitioning the hard drive.  And, on and on. It's nice if you already have a Linux installed.
Linux doesn't have to be installed. It can be loaded into RAM for the duration of the recovery.
Even if PartedMagic can be downloaded with a bootable Linux system it must still be burned to a DVD.
Any computer can be used to burn the ISO to disk, which makes it attractive in that regard.
Once PM is burned and booted off of it's loaded into RAM and flushed upon a reboot.
But the data recovery software in PM requires familiarity of the command line. That's it's drawback unfortunately.
However one can transfer files that were not deleted using this method.
...using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
Those "bootable cd's" of Data Rescue, File Salvage, and TechTool are probablly using Linux as it's a free OS.
Apple won't allow their OS to be used, Microsoft charges a huge license fee. So that only leaves Linux.
The user likely won't know that they are using Linux when using the bootable recovery disk, all they see is the recovery GUI.
Data Rescue is likely best downloaded, installed and run from a familiar OS X installed on a new HFS+ formatted external drive, then option booted from.
This would be faster than waiting for bootable disks to arrive in the mails. One has to use a exteranl drive anyway larger than the drive being recovered to hold all the potential recovered data.
