Rescue & Recovery 4 and Updated Virus Definitions

Hello:
I have a T61 with Rescue and Recovery 4 on it. It does not have Symantec Antivirus installed on the system drive. We use a different AV.
I press the Blue button on start up and it takes me to Rescue and Recover 4 and there is a button that reads "Virus Scanner" and I click it and get a window titled "Symantec Virus Scanner" and it provides two options. 1 - Use virus definitions from this CD or 2 - Use updated definitions from the update folder. Option 2 lets me enter a path to an update folder or browse to it. In the narrative it says I can burn the updated definitions to a CD and use that as the source. It says to get the updated definitions from another PC.
My question is where can I get the definitions if I do not have another PC with Symantec on it. It does not give an option to download them and I can not find a link on Lenovo's site and tech support was not even aware that this was an option in Rescue and Recovery and gave me no help. (2 different calls and 2 different reps.)

Can anyone (please) tell me which version of the signature files the Rescue & Recover partition needs?
It looks like there are three posibilities:
1) v5i32
2) i32
3) x86
Update: Well I figured it was either the v5 or the i32, and downloaded both, but can't get the embedded ZIP files to extract. The syntax is supposed to be update_name.exe /extract <filename> <target path>
From what I can tell the file to extract is VIRSCAN.zip but the extract fails................

don't run more than one malware suite/programs. it is possible to use some as long as they aren't running.

That's an iTunes issue. It's telling you that the computer has too much data on it and you need to free space. It's trying to download the iOS 6 update before a restore but can't because the computer's hard drive is too full.
Go through and uninstall/delete items from the computer itself and it'll work. Or, try another computer.

Phone stuck in recovery mode complete black screen will not turn on after recovery and update there was an error and now computer and itunes will not recognize the phone....Anyone know what I can do to get the phone recognized again when it cant be turned

Phone was not updated on time so it automatically shuts off and you get a plain black screen until it is recovered and updated. Well when i did the update and recovery I received an error. I went through the steps to fix the error, I had to restart my computer and now the phone isnt recognized on my computer or in itunes. The screen is still completely black so pushing the home button and plugging in to computer still does nothing. Device manager shows nothing in usb port, and apple mobile device software is installed and running. Any help?

Rescue & Recovery and Vista Restore Points

Hello,
If I create a restore point using Vista, how do I access that using IBM Rescue and Recovery (R&R)? I recently had a situation where Vista would not boot-up and the only thing I could do is to use an old backup. Are Windows Vista backups available in R&R if Windows itself does not boot. It appears that a shelf version of Vista comes with Windows Recovery Environment that gives you access to the command prompt so you could edit the registry to delete any offending entries but I do not know how to get to the Windows Recovery Environment within R&R and not having the Vista DVD.

as fas as i know RnR is diffrerent from Windows Restore, so if you use both you get double backups and therefore doble chances to restore your info in this case, i prefer RnR backups rather than vista because you can get into the menu even if windows cant boot, you might want disabel windows restore and recover that disk space used

Recovery and updating

Toshiba A10-1291, Windows Home Edition.
After using my Toshiba recovery disk I now have Windows SP1 and IE5. I wanted to upgrade to SP 2 on microsoft.com but it told me to upgrade to IE8 first. But when I tried to upgrade to IE8 it said that IE8 can be installed only if I have Windows SP2. Is there a way out?
Soon Microsoft will stop their support for Windows XP. Does it mean that in case of using my old recovery disk I shall always get Windows XP SP1 and won't be able to get SP2 and SP3?

That's incorrect, Anne! You may need IE6, though. Are you sure you don't have IE6? Please attach a picture of the message.

No. Microsoft will continue to offer the same support for security fixes. But there will be no new ones after April 8, 2014 (a year from now).
But it's best to download the whole SP2 package and burn it to a CD. Then you'll have it for the future.

Problem with Rescue & Recovery and older version backups

I have R&R version 4.23 on a R61i running XPP. Two problems:
1) It will not recognize older version backups on external HD. Any way to retrieve a few files only from old backup?
2) How do I delete an older version backup on internal HD which is not accessible but taking up lot of space? It seems to be hidden but is there.

could you provide a screenshot of any error that you're receiving when you tried to use the R&R ?
Curious to know, those backup that you have, was it done before upgrading to R&R v4.23 ? and if you copied the backup file from external to internal HDD, are you able to recover the backup ?
For number 2, is that backup located on the C:\ ? If it is, try changing the view to show all hidden files.
Also, do check if your system is updated too.

Updating Forefront hotfixes and virus definitions

Experts,
We have Microsoft forefront and our security engineer informed that we use SCCM to update virus definitions and WSUS to update application version.
We want to use Intune for this machines, which cannot co exist with SCCM agent on machines.
Is there any way to update virus definitions (possibly automatic) on clients so that we do not need SCCM agents on these machines anymore???

Hi,
You could edit the Definition Updates Source configuration which by default points to the Configuration Manager. For the standalone scenario you could enable Microsoft Update and Microsoft Malware Protection Center only. If your clients do not have direct
connectivity to the internet the use of a UNC share could also be an alternative, but then requires that you periodically update the share with latest definition updates packages.

Rescue & Recovery resets backup time

I'm on a Windows 7 64 bit x230 laptop. Rescue & Recovery 4.50 keeps resetting my backup time to noon, I keep setting it to middle of the night when it would be convenient to do a backup. Why is it doing this? I have tried resetting the schedule in both advanced rescue & recovery and the basic page. Yes, I am hitting save or apply.

The windows task scheduler has the launch entry for RNR scheduled backups.
Go to Control Panel, Admin tools, task scheduler. Double click the task scheduler library, then you will see a list of folders. Double click the TVT folder. You will see an entry called LaunchRnR. Right click this entry, and do Properties.
Please post the current Trigger contents. Does it say weekly or such, at NOON as you describe?
Look in C:\SWshare\rr.log for the following entries:

After you set your desired backup schedule, check your log for the above messages. ie, RC=0. Then check task scheduler for matching launch schedule. Please post the portion of RR.log containing the above messages.

Recovery Media Vs Rescue & Recovery

Hi I,m just enterend in the thinkpad world buyng a brand new edge 15'' 319 - 49G
I would like to understand what's the difference from the Recovery Media and Rescue & Recovery.
I've just lunched Recovery Media and it produced 4 dvd disks: is it a disk set to resume the original factory installation?
then I lunched the Rescue & Recovery and it produced a "backup" on the internal drive (but where?): do it is good to resume the actual sytem and applications situation?
Am I right?
or I've understand it wrong and Recovery Media Vs Rescue & Recovery does the same thing?

If you are running RNR 4.5, read my post from Nov 22,2011, incremental backups revert to local.(you will have to update a entry in windows task scheduler).
You need to develop a Disaster recovery plan. In my case, I have a second HDD (internal). I back up to it every Sunday,
and every 3 months I backup to cd/DVD in case second HDD goes up in smoke. I have no backups on my C drive(local).
If you have an external HDD, via USB, you can use that as your backup storage area. I would delete the backup on C,
change backup location to USB, then start backing up. First backup is a FULL C drive, the next ones are just incremental backups. Set max incrementals to 32. There are problems with the MERGE process(fail code=584, not enough space for the merge...bug in rnr).
On advanced menu, look on top tabs for Advanced . It allows you to copy Local backups to an external device.
Unless you really love your current backup, dont waste time copying. Just start it all on the USB.

T60; Rescue & Recovery

I have a T60 and just launched rescue/recovery and was expecting it to ask for DVD or other media and it hasn't. What it has done is slow my machine to a crawl. What is going on?

Installing Ubuntu (or any other Linux distro for that fact) will render the recovery partition useless 99 out of 100 times if one doesn't specify differently when they're installing Linux...
Wiping an entire drive and doing a fresh install from recovery disks seems to be the only way out that I can think of.

Virex 7.2. no eupdate icon and how do I update the virus definitions

I don't see an "Eupdate" icon on my virex 7.2. Is this common or uncommon.
Also, I believe I read where mac was no longer going to provide the virus definition updates for Virex. If this is so, how do I update these difinitions for Virex 7.2 on my computer?

Would this explain why my virus software (Virex 7.2) is telling me that my "virus definitions are out of date and should be updated" but when I try to update nothing happens? If so, then how do I keep my virus protection up to date?

Impossible to Update Antivirus Definition in Safe mode (onekey recovery press)

I have an Idea Pad S12, the first months i was able to update my definition of Norton in One key recovery mode. However my 90 days Norton internet Security has expired under Window and i have install PCtools Internet Security in place of Norton. Better price quality ratio. However after that, I am no sure if this is a coincidence but I am not anymore able to update the definitions. It run for 30min after he said he was not able to load it. The program run with the old definition (2007) not the last one I have download week ago. Then or is a Virus who is able to modified the Lenovo Oneley recovery program or is a matter of Norton license. What should I do, reinstall Norton Antivirus One Key recovery program or (all program) or download some Norton definitions and copy it somewhere (I could not find).
I find out tha in this mode I am able to find better where are virus, than under window where scanning show no problems .

Rescue and Recovery and Client Security solution question

I got a thinkpad edge e220s for home use and I am trying to figure out whether these two thinkvantage tools will be of any use to me since I am not on a company network or anything (all the marketing material mentions IT admins etc).
Is rescue and recovery just a backup solution with disk imaging (like ghost)? I use a drobo for all my data storage so I am not too concerned about backups as the drobo offers redundancy in case of drive failure. The laptop has an SSD which doesn't have a lot of capacity so I do not want unnecessary tools that will take up a lot of space. However if rescue and recovery offers really helpful features then i might consider installing it (and just not using the backup feature). I could not make out what the marketing material meant by one button solution for viruses and crashes.
Secondly, does client security solution offer features other than password vault/manager on my model? I am already using the beta for the new version (4) of password manager which is standalone and does not require client security solution. Again the marketing material does not help a home user like myself understand it very much.
Any help will be appreciated!

Creating x230t recovery and rescue media

I would like to create a recovery media my new x230t tablet. The tablet does not come with an optical drive.
Is putting the recovery media on an portable external HD a reasonable option? Will it reformat the drive or damage files that already exist on the drive?
If I put the recovery media on a USB memory stick, what size memory stick is required?
I would also like to create rescue media and have the same questions as above.

I'm sure CDs are 700 MB and not 800 MB its ill advised to use CD/DVDs for Backup. Heres a screenshot from the latest version of Dell Backup and Recovery which tells you the DVD backup is the worst type of backup to make.

Note at current I cannot find a direct download link o Dell Backup and Recovery 1.8.1.70 so you should ensure that you have 1.7.5.2 (as the tutorial video) Then you should upgrade it to 1.8.1.70 before making recovery media by pressing ? to the top right and then check for updates.
The user interface of 1.8.1.70 is improved and much more easy to follow.
