Rescue & Recovery resets backup time

I'm on a Windows 7 64 bit x230 laptop. Rescue & Recovery 4.50 keeps resetting my backup time to noon, I keep setting it to middle of the night when it would be convenient to do a backup. Why is it doing this?  I have tried resetting the schedule in both advanced rescue & recovery and the basic page.  Yes, I am hitting save or apply.

The windows task scheduler has the launch entry for RNR scheduled backups.
Go to Control Panel, Admin tools, task scheduler.  Double click the task scheduler library, then you will see a list of folders.  Double click the TVT folder. You will see an entry called LaunchRnR.  Right click this entry, and do Properties.
Please post the current Trigger contents.  Does it say weekly or such, at NOON as you describe?
Look in C:\SWshare\rr.log for the following entries:
Tue Jun 12 13:56:42 2012 RescueRecovery: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Lenovo\Scheduler\tvtsetsched.exe
Tue Jun 12 13:56:42 2012 RescueRecovery: update task="LaunchRnR" trigger=RnRTrigger triggertype=weekly time=2012-06-01T07:00:42 day=0 action=RnRAction actiontype=exe argument="BACKUP location=L name="Scheduled" scheduled"

Tue Jun 12 13:58:52 2012 RescueRecovery: Get back from GetTaskNextRunTime and return value is 0, next run time is 2012-6-17 7:0:42
After you set your desired backup schedule, check your log for the above messages.  ie, RC=0.  Then check task scheduler for matching launch schedule. Please post the portion of RR.log containing the above messages.

  • Rescue & Recovery - changing backup location

I am using R&R 4.2 on a Thinkpad R61. I have three partitions setup on my hard disk - the C:, the service partition and a D: partition. I want to change the backup location to use the D: partition, but I can't find any option to do this. Is this possible and if so, how do I do it?
    Thank you.

I did manage to change the location that R&R uses, but I'm not sure how I did it! It seems that the first time you run R&R, you can change the backup location using the "Set schedule and preferences" The next time you run R&R that option doesn't appear, R&R just uses the same location. To get the option to appear again, you have to change something. I think I reinstalled R&R and deleted any R&R entries from the registry. Once the option appeared again I changed it to the D: partion. It was a long time ago, so to be honest I can't remember exactly what I did.
Do you have the same problem that you don't get the option to change the location or do you get the option, but it doesn't list all of your partitions? You could look in the registry to see if the partition is listed.

Hi, to get your iPhone  4 back to normal, here're two ways for you.
    1.  Use Dr.Fone for iOS. The free trial version can fix iPhone screen of death. The free trial version can do that, you don't have to pay.
Just download and install this software on your computer and connect your iPhone 4 to computer with a USB cable. When it detects your iPhone 4 is abnormal, click Restart the device to get your iPhone 4 to be normal.
    2. Use iTunes to fix it.
Step 1. Make sure that the latest iTunes is installed on your computer.
Step 2. Plug into a USB cable to connect your iPhone4 to computer.
Step 3. Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time for about 10s.
Step 4. 10 seconds later, release the sleep/wake button. But continue to hold the home button until a message comes out, saying "iTunes has discovered an iPhone 4 in recovery mode, you must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes".
Step 5. Click your iPhone 4 in the left sidebar to show the device control panel on the right. Then, click Summary.
Step 6. Go to Backups section and click Restore Backup.... In the drop-down list, choose a backup file and restore to your iPhone 4

  • Rescue & Recovery Backup Failing on T60

Hi all -- I'd appreciate any help on the following problem:
I've been performing regular backups of my T60 to an external HDD via USB for about a year now. I've been using Rescue & Recovery version 3.10.0022.00. Everything's been fine until a couple of weeks ago when after about 20 minutes into the backup, a message popped up that said "Backup did not complete sucessfully."
The R&R help files are worthless in terms of any sort of troubleshooting information.
I have 99 GB of space left on the external drive (at least according to R&R), and the HDD that I'm backing up has signficantly less data than 99 GB so I don't think space is a problem. (Curiously, before I ran the first backup that failed, R&R said I had about 110 or 120 GB free, and only after failing the first time and subsequent times did it say I only had 99 GB free).
I've read of people solving some of their R&R problems by reinstalling, but I'm afraid that the newly installed software won't recognize the backups already taken, and I'll be forced to delete them. I don't want to do this for several reasons.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks.

    Hi, eacuni.
I have no solution to this but am sharing your experience.
I am running Windows XP on a T60 FDG1951. Ever since I installed XP Service Pack 3 Rescue and Recovery has not been working properly while before that time I never had problems creating backups. Since installing SP3, Rescue and Recovery aborts backing up 100% of the time, showi ng an error message that simply states either that creating the backup was unsuccessful or - even more simply - that it was aborted. No explanation offered.
Uninstalling Rescue and Recovery and newly installing the most recent version (4.21.0016.00), as the IBM/lenovo helpdesk suggested, didn't help any, either. Nor can it be a problem of a lack of space on my hard drive: I'm creating (trying to create, that is) my backups on an external USB drive with a lush 220 GB free.
So can anyone of you out there please help poor eacuni and me?
    Thanks!
    Thomas

  • Rescue & Recovery Unable to backup ....

    Hello,
I have used Rescue & Recovery for many years and love it. It has save me multiple times.
I recently installed Google Desktop. There are about a dozen Google Desktop files that R&R says it is unable to backup. I have to manually say "skip" to get the backup to complete successfully. This is a pain.
Q1) Is their a way to add these files to a R&R "exclude" list so R&R does not attempt to back them up? I do not need them in my R&R backup, as they can easily be recreated.
Q2) Or alternately, is their an adjustment I can make to Google Desktop so that R&R will backup these Google Desktop files?
    Thank you for your assistance.

you can exclude files in R&R go to advance mode and at the top of that click on advance then exclude files

  • Can you install Windows 7, then revert to a backup image of Vista with Rescue & Recovery?

I have a copy of 7 I want to put on my T61.  I've partitioned the OS into one partion, and the files into another.
I've made backup copies of the OS with Rescue & Recovery already, so can I install Windows 7 over Vista, then if I find I don't want to stick with it, recover back to Vista?
    T61 15.4" T9300 (2.5GHz 6MB L2) Windows 7 Professional x64 4GB Memory, NVidia Quadro NVS 140M

When you get to BOOTCAMP, that has to be changed from FAT to NTFS but you have to click Advanced Option.... button in order to change to NTFS.
The GPT error message can happen if you have more than one internal hard drive (say SSD and TB model).
If you didn't use Assistant, and some have managed, undo the partition.
Paragon CampTune $19 can also assist with installing Windows, creating the partition - but may not work with Lion, though you aren't there yet.

  • Rescue & Recovery can't find by backups - EXCEPT in the restore function. Help

I recently optimized   files, including placement
on disk - machine now flies.  I wanted to start from scratch with R&R).  So,
deleted all backups on Local and USB.
I launched a Base Backup - initiated manually,  shut down,
rebooted, came back up could not view backups - Message 'NO BACKUPS
FOUND' hen trying from 'view all back-ups', or 'delete backups' from Advanced
menu.  However I can find them using RESTORE FROM BACKUP.
Repeated starting with a new backup, same results exactly, except
now I have two BASE backups.  I even booted to the TV R&R
environment maybe find things there.  No luck - no ability to initiate a backup from Boot TV
environment, but could restore from the two backups.
I see no other choice other than uninstall 3.01?  Do you?  However, the newest
version out there is 4.22.. Any reason why I shouldn't upgrade to the
newest release?  I read all the warning, installation notes, bugs, etc., none seem to apply to me.
If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it, or if you know any
reason why 4.22 is not a good option...?
    Thanks in advance

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After deciding to recover a large amount of disk space, and start over with a new BASE - so deleted off all backups (I have a set on DVD's).  Used the Delete Backups under the Advanced tab. Version 3.01.0037.
Ran a new base backup (successful), but when trying to look at it using every available function in R&R - it could not find any backup " ".  Kept on messing around until low and behold, when attempting to do a restore, it finds the backups and lets me restore from it.  I could have lived with it but every backup it took (I tried two more) were each bases meaning big consumer of harddrive space.
Mistake one - called Lenovo (3 year contract), they suggested upgrade to most current version of R&R 4.21 or 4.22.  Walked me through it (no worries) and got new one installed.  PS:  Version 4 has some new very slick features.  Ran backup (I monitored using Task Manager - processes) - ran for a couple of hours never consuming more than one % of CPU.  Cancel button inoperative - eventually had to shut down machine.  When booted up again, R&R Processes continue to run and all attempts to start R&R unsuccessful.
Back to Lenovo - eventually tried with 3 other release versions (all R4), same results.  They suggest reimage platform and start over.  Note:  I had no problems whatsoever until trying to recover space from R&R by deleting backups.
Gave up on Lenovo and reinstalled V3.01.0042 (most recent R3 version).  Everything appears to run fine.  Doing backups, can see them, tried a couple of restores, everything worked perfectly.
New variable.  Was convinced that XP sp/3 had been out there long enough, over a year,so decided to install.  First thing, take a new backup even though the base was less than 48 hours old.
It became evident very evident that SP/3 had caused a lot of instability to my machine.  BSOD's all over the place, so decided to go back.  My first approach,  go back by restoring to my last backup using R&R. (at least the Window System since everything else had not changed).  I started in Windws to select which backup and what I wanted to do.    R&R then shut down Windows and began firing up the R&R boot space in order to do the Windows restore.
Here's the reason I ended up at this NTLDR post, was after stopping temporarily with the delete of the MBR, I thought I might reinstall version 3.02.0042 and see if that had any impact on the MBR.  So, I installed it, ran a delta backup which ran quick since hadn't changed much, then shut down and attempted to boot into the R&R Recovery Space.  Low and Behold, I get the NTLDR is Compressed - message .  Which took me here.
I followed your advice and downloaded the files and burned them to a diskette, ran the diskette, then tried to boot into the recovery space.
To my surprise, Version 4 of R&R fired up (where did that come from when I had uninstalled all version 4's using the Add/Remove program function).  And of course, once it was all loaded it gave me the message that it couldn't find the backup Record where it expected it to be (it was on an external USB drive).
So now, I need to figure out how to get rid of Version 4 on the MBR so I can load it again with the right version.  Lenovo suggested to be that could be accomplished by doing the following:
    Uninstall R&R v 3.01 - using add/remove programs
Boot into Bios - Disable Pre-Desktop - save and exit.
    Uninstall R&R v 3.01 - using add/remove programs
Boot into Bios - Disable Pre-Desktop - save and exit.
    Reboot into Windows
Right click on My Computer, select Manage - get to Disk Manager - select the Service partition of the C hard drive (the MBR) and Delete the Service partition.
Install the new 3.01version of R&R (and it will also rebuild the with the proper version - the only one it now knows about.)
I got as far as the Delete the Service Partition, but the computer would not let me delete it.  In fact, it would allow me to delete the primary NTFS partition, but the delete was grayed out on the Fat32 Service Partition.
So, my next step is to install Norton Partition Magic and use that  to remove the Fat32 Service Partition.  But before I do so I need to know that what I am doing has a good potential to solve the problems I am having, and not just compounding the problems to the point where I will have no choice but to reload with a factory image and manually bring it forward (not fun)
One question i had for you, on the NTLDR diskette, you didn't have anything on it that would load R&R v4 into the MBR did you?  I didn't think so.
do you think the solution suggested will work?  And any potential pitfalls I should be aware of,or if you have a better idea, I am all ears.
Thanks so much in advance for your assistance.
    Regards

  • Rescue & Recovery lists no backups on Iomega USB eGO disk

    Hi,
I have been using an Iomega eGO external USB drive for backups.
I have been able to list and remove backups (when required) when in Windows 7 and running Rescue & Recovery, but I am unable to get a list of backups when booting from a Recovery DVD into Rescue & Recovery.
Basically I am replacing the unencrypted hard drive with an SSD that supports encryption.
The aim was to use a full backup made immediately prior to removing the HDD to restore the full system.
When booting from the recovery DVD, the Rescue & Recovery utility doesn't list any backups, even when the tick box for listing backups for other systems is checked.
It makes no difference whether selecting ALL locations or External USB Drive.
    Any ideas?
Backups aren't much good if you can't retrieve them.
If my old disk had failed then I'd be in a worse state than this. I can't say that I'm impressed.

    Hello and welcome,
Has R&R been updated since you made your bootable DVD?  It's possible there's a version mismatch between your backups and your R&R DVD.
You might try burning a new rescue CD - or whatever it's called on your machine, "bootable media" maybe.  That may be able to find your backups.

  • Restoration of Lenovo T500 to new hard drive using Rescue & Recovery

I bought a new hard drive and I have been having a frustrating time trying to migrate the image of my hard disk to the new drive. When I bought my T500, it came with Windows Vista Business 64, but I have since downgraded it to Windows XP Pro.
Up to now, I was faithfully using Norton Ghost 14 to back up my drive to my USB Western Digital MyBook Mirror Edition 1TB drive. However, I get errors when I try to restore the image to my new drive (and I will be posting that issue to Norton's forum).
While I have not completely given up on Norton Ghost, I decided I might be able to restore the image using the Rescue & Recovery software. I downloaded and installed R&R 4.21.0016.00. After I installed it, I backed up my system to the MyBook Mirror Edition.
I then shut down the computer and put in the new hard drive (a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BEKT). I used a disc that I burned from the ThinkVantage Create Recovery Media utility to boot the machine. While the environment loads just fine, it does not detect my USB hard drive. NOTE: I didn't make my USB drive bootable, I only stored the backup files there.
I tried going into the PC Doctor utility and discovered that there is an "unidentified" USB device under the mouse section, which I presume is the MyBook.
I have hunted high and low for an answer to this both on Lenovo and Western Digital's web sites, but I can't seem to come up with a reason why my drive is not visible to R&R, or a way to load the WD drivers into this recovery environment. I found http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Rescue-and-Recovery-does-not-recognize-USB-driv..., and I followed the instructions - there is a minus sign next to the USB boot device in the bios. However, saving the bios and rebooting the computer (as the post suggested) does nothing to change that setting.
I have tried upgrading the bios to the latest version, but still no luck detecting the USB drive.
I am thinking about resorting to buring a backup of my entire system to DVDs and then restoring using the DVD drive. However, since my current backup is 60GB, I imagine that will take 15 discs.
Whether that fixes my immediate problem or not (that is, transferring to my new drive), I still don't have an answer for a long term solution in case of hard drive failure. Ghost is not working with my current configuration. And if I use R&R for backup, it will do me no good if I cannot get it to connect to my USB drive to recover. Furthermore, as far as I can tell there is no way to burn an existing restoration point to DVD - meaning I would have absolutely no way to restore if my hard drive failed.
I have been working on this migration for 3 full days already, and since I had my system images backed up I thought that this would be a trivial task. Any suggestions at this point would be welcomed.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I wanted to restore single files from an USB disk. Two larger file (500MB each) went through that process quite fast (3 minutes). A folder with many small files takes forever.
What's strange is that my notebook hard drive is at 100% activity all the time, while the USB disk is hardly read.

  • E30 - Rescue & Recovery "Rejuvenate" still at 0% after 20 hours

    Dear Sirs,
How long can R&R "Rejuvenate" stay at "System restore in progress... 0%" before I should begin to worry?  I started a Rejuvenate on my E30 about 20 hours ago, and for at least 19 of those hours it's been sitting at 0%.  (And yes, I'm beginning to worry!)
    In terms of details:
    1)  I purchased this E30 from Lenovo in August 2011.  It's a fairly basic machine with two 500GB HDDs in RAID 1; the drive is about 27% full; and I've done regular backups (to a 500 Lenovo USB external hard drive) via Rescue & Recovery without ever encountering any problems.
    2)  I have never defragmented the disc (at least until this current "Rejuvenate" attempt).
    3)  Just prior to the Rejuvenate, I (by way of a test) did a full Restore (via Rescue and Recovery) of my machine to a backup I made earlier in the day.  This Restore proceeded without at hitch, and took about 90 minutes.  The machine worked normally after the Restore, and had correctly reverted to the state it was in when I made the backup -- so everything seemed fine.
    4)  I then restarted the machine, restarted R&R, and selected the Rejuvenate option.  The first Rejuvenate steps seemed to go well:  first came a small incremental backup, and then the "Capturing current settings" step proceeded pretty rapidly.  The next step (according to the "Rescue and Recovery Progress" window) is "Restoring Files" -- and the machine has stayed on this step for the past 19+ hours.
    5)  On my screen, there are two windows atop a "Lenovo -- Rescue and Recovery 4 --  ThinkVantage Technologies" background.  One window is "Rescue and Recovery Progress", and inside that window is the word "Rejuvenation", and then five steps.  The first step is "Capturing current settings", and there's a green check mark next to it.  The second step is "Restoring files", and there's a blue arrow pointing to it.   Three more steps (e.g., "Apply saved system-wide settings", etc.) sit below, without any markings. The other window is "Progress", on which there's a completely empty horizontal bar graph, below which are the words "System restore in progress... 0%".  I've tried Alt-Tab, and no other windows are visible anywhere.
    6)  The machine is not frozen:  I can move the mouse icon freely, and can drag the two progress windows about the screen.
    7)  The HDD LED on the front panel of the E30 tower emits a brief low-power flash at precise 1-second intervals (question:  is the machine polling the disc or the optical drive?).  At various times in the day, this LED has briefly but fully brightened in the random, flashing way that it does when the discs are being written to (e.g., about an hour ago it was starting to seem normal, and I was beginning to feel relieved) -- but now it's reverted to its 1-second dim flashing, without any bright bursts at all.
    8)  The red light on the external USB Drive is mostly continuous bright red, but this light flickers randomly and frequently, as if the external drive is actually doing something.  These flickers, however, can happen (and usually do happen) without any corresponding change in the E30's front panel LED's regular 1-second "ticks".
    9)  Unfortunately, the above info pretty much exhausts all my knowledge about computers, and I have no access to an IT expert (I'm a freelance writer who has to run CAD models on occasion, and this E30 sits in my bedroom "office").  I've searched the Lenovo forums for threads on this "0%" issue, and apart from the Alt-Tab suggestion to look for hidden windows, I haven't understood anything in them (sorry).  Also, in hindsight, I wish I had put a backup on something other than the external USB drive -- e.g., presumably if I do something drastic like turn the E30 off, I corrupt both the E30 drive and the external drive backup files, yes?
And, so.....am I in trouble?  Have I done something wrong?  And if so, is there any way I can get my computer working again?  Or is R&R working properly, and the Defragmentation part of the Rejuvenate is just taking a long time (because I've used the E30 for over three years without ever defragmenting or rejuvenating)?  Any advice (or even reassurance) would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much (and Congratulations on the new P-series Thinkstations -- I saw them when I logged on to compose this query;  may you please all have great success with the new machines!).
    Yours, - W
P.S. -- in the time it's taken to compose this query, the front panel HDD LED has begun to occasionally flash again (random, intermittent, full power flashes, separated by long periods of 1-second "ticks") -- so things are sort of working, yes?  =)

Right -- the "Rejuvenate" process has finally ended, 43.5 hours after I started it.  =)
(The user interface is really confusing -- even after I thought things were done, windows would spontaneously pop up and tell me to reboot the computer;  it took 4 reboots before a final pop up said "Rejuvenation Successful"....)
    Questions for the Experts:
This was a painful process:  among other things, I've been minus my workstation for two solid days, and at no point did I have any idea when and if the computer would begin to work again.  Hence....
    1)  Is "Rejuvenation" worth the trouble?  Is this something you'd recommend people use, or should I avoid the option in the future?
    2)  Should I regularly Defragment my disk?  The Rejuvenation program has now set my Defragmenter scheduler to come on every week (previously, the Defragmenter was turned off).  Is regular disk defragmentation something you would recommend?
    3)  How is "Rejuvenation" different from a simple Backup + Defragmentation?  Is the Rejuvenation somehow more thorough or more effective?  I ask because of how painful the Rejuvenation process was this time around:  if it really doesn't do anything the Defragment tool doesn't, then I'd prefer to avoid it in the future.
Sorry for the naive newbie questions(!) -- I just happen to love my E30 (which I specced out according to recommendations given to me on this forum, three years ago -- thank you for all the help!), and I'd like to maintain it properly.  =)
Thank you in advance for any recommendations!

  • Launching Rescue & Recovery from a Command Line

Question - I would like to know how I can launch Rescue & Recovery from a command line.
Issue that is prompting the question -  My laptop was sitting in my computer bag overnight. The battery was fully charged. I BELIEVE that it was in suspend mode at the time. When I opened it in the morning, there was a message on the screen saying that a backup had not completed successfully. I then noticed that the battery had run down completely.
My Plan - I would like to launch Rescue & Recovery (as well as the Defrag utility) from Windows Task Scheduler. If I do, then all schedule tasks will be launched and controlled using the same process. Windows Task Scheduler also provides two key scheduling criteria that the IBM Rescue & Recoverry or the IBM Maintenance Manager utilities do not provide -
#1 - Run this task only when the PC is on AC power.
#2 - Run this task ony when the computer is idle (so that it doesn't slow down the PC if I happen to be working on it)
     Background Concerns -
    - Having a backup job automatically start when the computer is in my computer bag will run down my battery when I least expect it.
    - The PC may could also be damaged due to overheating, since the sides of the computer bag  block the ventilation holes.
    Additional Info
    - If I go to the ThinkVantage Productivity Center and select the Quick Link for "Backup Now" this will indeed launch a backup on demand. I assume that selecting this option is calling a specific executable file.
    - However, the only two applicable executable files that I see in the C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery directory are "mr_gui.exe" and "wizrr.exe". Both of these files launch an interface that requires the user to make a selection. As a result, it doesn't look as if either of these files would work for unattended operation, unless there is some sort of switch that I can put in that will automatically start the backup process.
    - I called the support line (only once so far), but that particular rep did not know of any way to launch Rescue & Recovery other than from the standard R&R user interfaces.
     Any help is greatly appreciated,
    Mathew

The correct way to invoke a JSP is to make a request to the Server.
Normally you would use your browser to do this.
On a unix system, you can use the wget command to invoke a url without using a browser.

  • Terrible bug with Rescue & Recovery 4.5

    Hello all,
Just a notice to all users, I had a terrible bug with Lenovo Rescue & Recovery. Everything went well, until the restore: I have one SSD for system and one micro sata for data. The system drive had two partitions (created by Lenovo at the origin, a system (C) partition and a Lenovo recovery partition). When I tried to restore a previous version of the system drive that I backuped with Lenovo R&R, it restored the system on C: and restored the recovery partition... on D:, erasing all my data! In addition, the MBR was missing on the system. And cherry on the cake, I could not use the backup a second time when I tried, because R&R did not find the backup again.
I was particularly disappointed because as the backup went so smoothly, I did not do a data backup before restore, my previous backup being three days old, so I lost three days of work.
I had previous bad experience with Windows backup & restore, windows software could not find the restore, but at least it did not erase data.
    Thierry

I agree with the TERRIBLE bug comment.
    It amounts to:
    (1) restore Q partition
    (2) C drive.
I will repeat my other posts. I ordered pc, with 320 GB and 160 Gb Hdd.  From factory, C went to 320MB.  Factory install goes to 1st HDD it finds, in my case 320 GB.
So you have discovered a new, how does it work?
1 HDD (c), 1 sata (for data).  It used factory recovery items, and waxed the sata( and made it bootable). Then got smarter, and restored C to HDD, unbootable.
Did someone not test this? Dont expect a new version of RNR. not supported on win 8. Acronis, $$ well spent.
    Dumb.
Next time, unplug the loved sata before a FULL HDD restore. (not a c drive restore). Sad.   unplug loved!

Did not find backup 2nd time around. Discussed in other posts from myself.  What is your windows platform RNR backup location set to?  If local, change it to USB or where ever you think they are at.

  • Rescue & Recovery blue screen on T60 with XP and SSD

    Hi everyone.
On my T60 (2008-VPT) with Windows XP SP3, I installed an SSD (Verbatim 240 GB). I've done a clone of the old HD on the new SSD and than I installed it on the T60.
All is fine, but when I try to do a backup with Rescue & Recovery 4.23, after 1 hour BLUE SCREEN appair.
With the paging file the message was KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR, I set No paging file, but another time blue screen, without precedente message but only with code error 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x898E9DA0, 0x898E9F14, 0x805D22AA).
    Any Idea?
Thank's a lot for your help

  • Use "Factory recovery disks" or "Rescue & recovery"?

I'll be upgrading my T520 from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (clean install) and want to create a full, restorable backup of my system first.
I'm confused about just which method to go with.  In Control panel, there is a "Lenovo-Factory recovery disks".  And then there is also Rescue & Recovery, which I just installed.
From the online instructions, it looks like with R&R, I can select either the OS and/or Data.  If I select OS, is this the same as running the Control panel item, Factory recovery disks??
I will probably create the OS backup media separate from the Data media anyway, since I want to copy the data over to my clean install of Windows 8.
    Thanks!

The Recovery Disks are a must have do burn them to DVD's (3 - DVD are burnt). These 3 DVD allow you to reinstall the the Windows 7, tools drivers etc to the state it came from the factory. It becomes clean start as you originally got it. They maybe also used to boot into for the repair console but I am not certain as I haven't tried it myself.
Now having said that which should be clear. You want an IMAGE of the DRIVE which includes 3 partitions. One is no good since Lenovo boots via Rapidstart via "System_Drv" partition. If you look in Disk Management you'll see that is the active boot partition. You need it and the Windows partitions a minimum. But that leave the Q drive omitted.
Few people take into account that even though they have a backup of the HD they DON'T have the means to read it to put it back. Its fine if you just going to over write a working system from the backup but not it the application or tools are missing. Acronis Trueimage is OS independent and allow for a Boot CD to be made for those situation in which you can restore a HD, a partition or even folder and files from the same backup. This is what you'd want or something equivalent and 100% that you'll have access to it afterwards. I doubt you'd be able to easily do all this will R&R  and there is no way to verify that in advance. Many time the backup is no good and you're SOL. Trueimage can verify the image file created that its good if you which so you know. You can create as many images as you wish over time and typically place on an external drive. Do so via the eSATA port is very fast while USB works but slower.
I trust this will have answered and/or enlightened you plan. Bottom line at the end of it all. You want to be 200% sure how to do the image restore from a unbootable HD. If you can't then the damm R&R is false security and useless tool. I don't use and don't trust it period. Some people sure have rebuilt an SSD with it but that's no the same thing or as easy.
You may want to read some of the Window 8 pre threads since you're be installing over Windows 7 as the upgrade requires.
    Good luck.
PS: You are smart to ask now rather than like many after they've destroyed the original software and no clue how to recover and go back. Expect stuff not to work as it does under Win7 Lenovo has a lot to catch up on for their tools and drivers before its solid packages. That's my opinion.
You could buy another HD and just swap it and do a clean install but would likely require a retail Windows 8. There does not seem to be a way to install it yet without the Windows 7 being available for verification before the upgrade DVD will install. Then its as drive swap to go back again.
