Reserve copy includes system files?

why I have the question is that I am not sure what the reserve copy includes when done through iTunes to the computer.
I have an assumption that my current iPhone is not officially unlocked, so if I make a reserve copy of it and then restore it to my new officially unlocked phone. Will such reserve copy ruin it? Or it does not replace system files, but just apps, data etc?

Have a look at this article about the content of your backup, the backup does not include the firmware for your device.

  • Spotlight: Include System Files by Default?

    Hello,
    I like to use Spotlight as a general system cleaning preference, deleting old applications and their preference files, which are oftentimes in different locations.
    Leopard allows one to include system files (including preferences) in Spotlight searches, but this is not enabled by default. Rather, one has to click the button after running the search and manually choose this option.
    I would like to have this option enabled by default so this step is not repeated. Is there a way?
    Thank you in advance.

    Try this. Click on the Desktop, CMD+F, set it up the way you want to, put in some generic search term, such as test, save it, open it, change the search term, and you should be good to go. There's no known way to change the defaults (at least i haven't tried). In Tiger modifying the default_smart.plist buried in the Finder.app did the trick, but I haven't been able to work out the salient details to do that in Leopard.

  • Copy hidden system files from admin to client?

    I'm preparing for a large rollout of Macs and one of our apps hides its license file with a . in front of the file name. Rather than type in the serial number 100 times, I'd like to simply blast out the license file via ARD to same relative location, but of course it's not visible to the OS/ARD. The containing folder is not hidden, it's just a single file that needs to be copied.
    Is there any way to do this, perhaps by Unix cp command? How do you tell the remote computer to source the file from my computer, since the command is run locally on the remote machine. (Whew.)
    Thank you.

    Lots of people are unaware of those extra options in the Finder Search. The other one that's commonly needed but not known about is the option to search system files, which is also under "other". You may want to check the "In Menu" box for those two so that they are available directly from the pulldown menu; they're both needed pretty often for many people.
    Happy to have been of help.
    Cheers.

  • Recovering from Old Shadow Copy Cache System Files

    Hello,
    We have a client who had data corruption on a large scale (virus) and did not have an active backup. Shadow Copy was enabled, but failed when attempting to restore using built-in Shadow Copy recovery. Folder and File level recovery failed.
    We were able to use a tool called Z-VSSCopy to restore file-by-file, but as that was underway (days) the shadow copy service continued to run and eventually ran out of space, overwriting the shadow copies we were restoring from.
    I know, I should have modified the schedule or at least increased the available size for shadow copies, but that is a lesson learned too late.
    In viewing the shadow copy data in the \System File Information folder, I saw that the copies were in fact deleted, but I noticed two files that were from a month ago.
    Z-VSSCopy and built-in are not recognizing them (or vssadmin) but I can see the data is still there. One is 300+ MB and the other 100+ MB.
    Is there a way I can force recovery using data contained in these files, or are they lost?
    I'm currently running a Data Recovery program in hopes I can recovery anything, but since there has been significant writing on this disk since the incidence, I have little hope.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Generally if a previous version is not recognized by system, we may not able to recover the data inside.
    If you can still see some VSS files, please test if they could be recognized by command line:
    vss list shadows
    If one of them could be recognized, it will be listed like this:
    vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool

    Please check the timestamp to make sure it is the snapshot you are looking for.
    If it is listed, try to create a symbolic link:
    mklink /d c:\shadow123 \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy3\
    *Note:add a back-slash in the end of this command line.
    If this will work, you can access c:\shadow123 to get the files.

  • A way to search System Files and by File Name as default?

    Hello.
    Is there a way I can make the default search both include searching by File Name and searching System Files?
    I know I can make a saved search, but this just is one extra step. I'd like to the default behavior of the Finder be to search system files, and default to searching by File Name rather than contents.
    Thanks.

    If you bring up the Finder window search using Command-Shift-F you will get the default of a file name search (unfortunately it has no criteria whatsoever, so if you want to modify the search with an added criterion you have to click the wee little + icon).
    There is no way to automatically include system files.

  • Does a time machine backup also restore system files?

    In my case, I've deleted a lot of system files including desktop wallpapers and stuff, because I split my drive into two partitions, and started running very low on space on my primary partition. Now, I want to go back to two partitions, but I am unable to. Hence I have to format my Mac to do so. What my question is is this. If I use Time Machine after formatting to restore a backup, does that also include system files, like wallpapers and etc., or only user files? What about my keychain, browser data like cookies and other user data from my applications? Does all of that come back too? If it does, then I think that the other system files might come back too, right? I specifically remember deleting files from the Application Support folder. Also, every time after finishing a backup, my disk takes hours for encrypting the backup. Is that normal?
    PS : I use Mavericks.

    Malcolm J. Rayfield wrote:
    Well, I did not maintain backups before I deleted the files. What then?
    Download and reinstall Mavericks from the App Store.  It won't delete any user files.
    Correction
    It should not delete any user files.
    The OP should backup before starting this, in case of error.

  • Self-created invisible system file not found via Finder's Find command

    I need to see what is being created on my hard disk. To achieve that, I create a test file, call it .new in TextEdit, remove the hidden .rtf extension, and place it in one of the folders in /Library/Application Support. Then, I use Finders Find command, and ask to search This Mac, Created date: today, System files are included, File visibility Visible or Invisible, leaving the input field (for file contents or name) blank. The newly created file isn't found. I type its name into the input field, with the same result. I change its name to .new.plist . Same result. Suspecting that "System files" acutally means system files and doesn't include the Library on the top level, I place that same item in /System/Library/PodcastProducer. Same result.
    Seriously, this is entirely incomprehensible. The Find command obviously doesn't do what it says it does. Could anyone tell me how to get it to, or name some alternative?
    Thanks a lot.

    Actually you CAN get ressults for .whatever files and folders. I created a saved search for my home folder with the criterion of "File visibility::Invisible Items" and then "None of the following are true::Name contains" DS_Store, Icon or localized. The result is a list of 65 invisible items including things such as the files /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.0017f20dca84.plis t (a dot file), /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.freeverse.5012 (something with the invisible flag set), the dot folder /Users/francine/.fontconfig, and many others of all of these types. I thought it was interesting that lots of them were inside the ~/Library folder, even though I did NOT specify including system files.
    I don't know why the original poster can't get Spotlight, using the the Command-f method, to display dot files. When I was setting my own invisible items search up I did manage to crash the Finder once, so it may be that the query for invisible items is buggy. Here's the Raw Query:
    (true) && (((kMDItemFSInvisible = 1) && (!((kMDItemDisplayName = "\DS_Store"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\Icon"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\localized"cd)))))
    If you go to a folder, do Command-f, then change from the default "Kind" to "Raw Query" and paste the above in as the query, you ought to get all the invisible files and folders, except the .DS_Store, Icon and localized files (of which there are likely hundreds of 'em in your home folder).

  • RMAN vs other system files

    Hi,
    Can RMAN backups file other than database files ?
    I want RMAN to backup a set of files that are related to our software. The files needs to be backuped at the same time the DB is for consistency.
    the files are not owned by the oracle user.
    Is there a "how-to" somewhere that can help me to include system files into a RMAN backup ?
    technical info :
    Oracle : 11.2.0.1 or 10.2.0.4
    OS : hp-ux itanium
    thanks

    Hello,
    You wrote:

    DB is for consistency. As previously posted, RMAN is used for Database only.
    But, some applications has their own Backup tool. For instance, Oracle iAS has it's own Backup method.
    So, you may check if your Application has an integrated Backup tool.
    If not, you'll have to see with the software application support how to backup it consistently. You may have to stop some
    processes,... .

  • Can I restore the copy of DBF files in other system?

    I had the copy of DBF files and I want to restore them in another system. How it has to be done? I need help on this regard. Pls give me solution urgently.

    There are several ways that you could do this, including using an Export and Import file, but perhaps the easiest method is to use the duplicate command in RMAN to do this, after setting certain conditions..
    The you could use a command such as:
    duplicate PROD database to TEST;
    Take a look at the RMAN chapter on creating a duplicate database.

    Dear ladies and gentlemen!
    I recently received on my notebook, operating system 8.1, the message "Adobe Acrobat is no longer working properly". I also found myself that I can copy from einerPDF file excerpts not without problems in another document. My Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro has released version 9.0.0. Two updates this version is not listed. Please inform me how I can fix this problem.
    Sincerely, Walter Hacksteiner
    mailto: [email protected]

    The first thing I would try is to update Acrobat 9 to the latest version 9.5.5
    The next thing would be to run Acrobat 9 in Windows 7 or Vista or XP Compatibility Mode.

  • Win XP Won't install, won't copy system files

    I'm putting together an A64 system w/ a WD 36gb raptor on sata1.
    I've done all of the things posted on this board (changed bios settings, used the floppies to install the sata drivers during windows setup).  Everything is fine up until the xp setup is copying the setup files from the cd.  It stops at every other file and says that it can't copy that file.  Sometimes I can press enter and it will copy it on the second try but it always stops partway through and won't copy any more files.  I've tried 2 different windows xp pro cds, and i know my cd rom drive doesn't have problems reading the files.  This has only happened when I swapped out my WD 250gb ata drive for the sata raptor.
    My power supplies (came with chieftec case from newegg) settings are as follows (as I've heard this may be a problem):
    +3.3V = 22.0a, +5v = 36.0a, +12 = 18a
    I'd love any suggestions.  I've already flashed the bios to 1.2 and it doesn't seem to help.  Thanks.

    I've taken one stick of ram out (it occured to me to do this just after i posted!), and it seems to be installing.  I am still getting the "cannot copy file" errors, but if i have it retry a couple of times, it will usually go through.  After that though, it still gives me "fatal errors" because it didn't copy all of the setup info onto the hd.
    I was hesitant to put the system specs in my sig because i'm buidling this for someone else, but here they are:
    A64 3200+
    512 (1 stick) corsair twinx 3200LLPT DDR
    WD 36gb raptor - connected to sata 1
    plextor dd rom drive
    floppy drive
    and 2 case fans and the cpu heatsink/fan
    Do you guys think that the power supply is the root of the problem as I've heard suggested?  I thought this Chieftec rated at 450W would be enough.  I will try and pick up a case with an Antec 380w PSU and try it out.  I know that it's not a problem with the cd because i've used it to install on the same system, except it was on a WD 250gb ATA drive.  Everything went fine on that installation.  I've only been having this problem when trying to install on the raptor through sata.

    I couldn't find the edit button on my original post so I am posting an update here.
    I have gone through more apps and have had good luck on all but one more.  And it's not that the app doesn't work, I am talking about the Yahoo Weather app, It works fine, but when you swipe between cities the screen lags a bit and it sometimes doesn't move between pages the way it should.  On iOS 7.1.2 it was smooth as butter but on iOS 8.0, not so much.  I will post a note in the app store to let them know.  I really like the Yahoo app better than the new stock app.
    I have been going through my games and they all work fine. Angry Birds (Original and Stella), Canabalt, Minecraft, Bejeweled 2, Silly Walks, PopWords, Doodle Jump, Deep Green all seem to work just fine.
    Starbucks app works as it should.
    I will stop back again next week after I have had the weekend to play with it in detail and post my thoughts again.

  • System backup with rsync: Copy directories without files

    Hi guys,
    i'm using a single rsync command for backup / copying my system. I skip a lot of directories, because they are big or aren't needed to copy an existing arch installation. I found out, that the content of var/log and var/spool should not deleted entirely, becuase sub directories have to be there with specified permission/ownerships.
    This is my current backup-script:
    #!/bin/sh
    SRC="/nfs"
    DST="/mnt"
    sudo rsync -aAXv --delete $SRC/* $DST --exclude={/dev/*,/proc/*,/sys/*,/tmp/*,/run/*,/mnt/*,/var/log/*,/media/*,/lost+found,/home/*/.gvfs,/data/,/backup/,/home/*,/root/*,/var/abs/local/yaourtbuild/*,/var/cache/pacman/pkg/*,/scripts/*,/var/spool/cups/*,/var/spool/cups-pdf/*,/var/tmp/*,/etc/ppp/peers/*}
    I read the manpage of rsync, but i did not found out, how to copy a directory with all subdirectories, but exlude all files in it.
    By the way: i hope the options "aAXv" are perfect - i never had problem with them in the history. But one question: What is when a fileowner does not exists on the target machine, will it mapped to "nobody"? For normal users, this does not matter, becuase i skip the entiere /home dir, but in /etc could some files owned by service-users, that does not exists on the target maschine.
    Greetings,
    Sebastian

    Hello Rexilion,
    the tip with find and print0 was greate and works.
    The i know about -x option, but it do not work in my case (i don't know why), it will copy all content of /dev (it should not).
    In the moment, i'm using this script to copy my arch installation:
    #!/bin/sh
    SRC="/mnt3"
    DST="/mnt"
    cd $SRC # important for relative find command
    sudo rsync -aAXvz --delete $SRC/* $DST --exclude={/dev/*,/proc/*,/sys/*,/tmp/*,/run/*,/mnt/*,/media/*,/var/log/*,/lost+found,/home/*/.gvfs,/data/,/backup/,/home/*,/root/*,/var/abs/local/yaourtbuild/*,/var/cache/pacman/pkg/*,/scripts/*,/var/spool/*,/var/tmp/*,/etc/ppp/peers/*} --progress
    find var/log -type d -print0 | rsync -av --files-from=- --from0 $SRC $DST
    find var/spool -type d -print0 | rsync -av --files-from=- --from0 $SRC $DST
    Are there more directories, that could contain sensitive data, that should not copied to another computer (for example, when my arch installation should copied to a "foreign" computer)?
    /etc/passwd should not be a problem, the passowrds are hashed. And in /etc/ssh, i have no important private keys - ok, maybe i'm wrong, maybe i should regenerate them via "ssh-keygen -A"
    Any other ideas, what should be keeped in mind, when copy an existing arch installation to another "foreign" machine?

  • Why is Itunes cluttering my music folder with system files?

    Ok i was using windows 7 before this and it was fine. Then i reformatted my drive and put windows 7 again. Downloaded latest itunes v9 and installed. Copied my entire music library backed up on my external hd and copied it to the music folder under the libraries section. In windows 7 the "my music" folder under user>documents and settings is actually the same as the "music" folder in the libraries on your pc. The music folder in libraries simply can compose of multiple folder so it simply displays all the contents of the "my music" folder and can also include other folders.
    Anyhow itunes screw up indexing my library but thats a whole problem of another sort. The main issue is that after it sees my music library and after I have downloaded something it does this. http://img169.imageshack.us/i/65030372.jpg/
    In that link as you can see in music under libraries it just leaves all those system and downloaded files.There actually ends up being hundreds after it gets album/song artwork since each artwork picture comes up as a ict2 file.
    However if i go to the my music folder in documents and settings it neatly tucks away all those files into their respective folder in itunes media or artworkd, despite the few core library files. http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/5956/55950795.jpg
    AT the moment i have deleted all the music in my library. Deleting those system files simply makes itunes no longer see an library. I have tried reinstalling with no avail. Why is it putting everything in folder in my music but not doing the same in music-libraries which is the same identical folder.

    This is just a thought, because I've not played with Windows 7, but near the top of your 1st image it says *Music Library, Includes 2 Locations*. I think you're looking at a view there which will display the contents of all possible music storage locations and the contents all of their subfolders, i.e. like a search result box. The other image corrsponds to a regular folder layout. iTunes stores an Album Artwork folder inside the main iTunes folder along with it's main database and a number of other supporting files. These files are required for iTunes to work so you can't just delete them. If you want to look at your media folders the use Windows Explorer to look inside *iTunes\iTunes Media*.
