Reserve IP address by device?

I have a variety of Apple devices on my network, using an Airport Extreme router. (Devices include a Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, iPhones, etc.)
My Mac Mini (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) acts as an HTPC, and I would like it to always have the same 10.0.1.X address. Can someone tell me how to set it so the Mac Mini always uses 10.0.1.2, for example? My devices sometimes change addresses, if I restart the router or a device.
I tried going to System Preferences->Network->Wi-Fi->Advanced->TCP/IP-> and from here I chose "Using DHCP with Manual Address" from the drop-down menu, and I entered 10.0.1.2 as the address and applied the change ... but I wasn't able to access the HTPC from Google Chrome using the 10.0.1.2 address as I normally can.
(I set it back to "Using DHCP" and renewed the lease, and I was able to use Chrome to access my HTPC at the address it generated -- 10.0.1.13.)

Chances are, the 10.0.1.2 address has already been assigned to another device on your network, so it would not be available in that case.
What happens if you set the address for the Mac Mini as 10.0.1.13 in System Preferences?  Or better yet, assign an IP address that would be higher than addresses than other devices on your network normally receive.....to eliminate possible conflicts.  Try something like 10.0.1.25 or 10.0.1.50 for example.
Most wireless routers....including Apple....will also allow you to reserve a given IP address for a specific product. If you have an Apple router that is in charge of DHCP address assignments for your network, another option would be to have the Apple router assign IP addresses.  You have to know the MAC Address of the device if you do it this way, which is a unique ID number for a device.

  • OS X 10.6.7 not getting reserved DHCP address from router.

    I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.7
My router is NetGear WGT624v3.  I have the router setup to assign out reserved DHCP address for my Macs.
I am not getting the reserved address, but rather "any" address in the pool.
Other types of devices are getting the reserved address.  For example, old windows computers, and my Android phone.  Only the Mac computers seem to be getting the incorrect addresses.
    Any ideas please?

As long as it shows up in the Windows Boot Camp control panel I'd say fine, happened to a lot of people - I have not had Windows 7 show in Mac Startup Disk control panel for years in my Mac Pro.

Yes. Correct. It does not support this. Not with standard firmware.

Is there a way I can delete my primary @me email address so that I can receive emails only via my "reserved" @icloud address. eg. delete "msjones@me" and receive emails via "msjones@icloud" only. The reason being, I receive a fair bit of spam to my @me address. You can't delete the address, but you can set up a Rule to move messages to that address to the Trash or another folder. Go to http://icloud.com and go to the Mail page, click the cogwheel icon at top right and choose 'Rules'.
It's a bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - even though in fact you haven't posted them in full; I've asked the hosts to remove them.

  • VPN - reserving Pool addresses

      Hello there.
I have created a PPTP VPN on a cisco  3745 router, and a pool of addresses for the VPN clients. Now i want to find a way to reserve the addresses in the pool for specific machines,  for example,  if machine A connects to the VPN it should always be given the IP address a.a.a.a and that address should never be assigned to any other machine even if machine A is not connected to the VPN. Please help.
    Thanks.

you can reserve the ip address for a particular user in the ACS. and you will have to authenticate for vpn via ACS. i have done this and it works perfectly.

    Hi everybody,
I just upgraded my Netgear WGT624 router to a Linksys WRT54G2 v1. awesome router! On the Netgear web interface, I was able to reserve IP address to a mac address. Is it possible to reserve IP to a mac address on Linksys? I've notice that my IP keeps changing from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.3
    Thanks

    Hello,
Since it took over an hour to send an email from my gmail address the other night andsince I have tried unsuccessfully to create an @outlook.com address in Internet Explorer 8 I would like to use Mozilla to create a free reserve email address. Is it possible to do this in Mozilla instead of using Google Chrome or Internet Explorer 8? Thank you for helping a real dummie when it concerns creating a reserve email address.

  • IP Addresses of Devices on Network?

Is there anyway I can get my Airport Extreme to list the IP addresses for all the devices (Macs, printers, etc.), both wired and wireless, that are attached to it?
    Thanks,
    Kelly

OK, I'm going to guess at a few things here. You previously had your devices set up with another router and the AirPort Extreme is a new device that you have recently added, correct?
Right now, the AEBS is assigning IP addresses to your devices automatically starting with 10.0.1.2. This will work fine unless there is a reason for one or more of your devices to have a "static" IP address.
If you need to assign a static IP address to a device, you will need open up AirPort Utility again, Manual Setup, Internet icon and click the DHCP tab below the icons.
Look for the DHCP Reservations area and click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the list. You will be able to assign a description for the device, (example "HP Printer") and assign it a specific IP address. To do this, you must also enter the MAC address of the device. You can do this for as many different devices as you wish. If you want to use the previous static IPs that these devices had, that should work.
The Apple Airport Networks guide would be something you want to keep handy.

  • I can't get rid of 169 ip addresses on devices

I am having problems with computers and iOS devices using a 169.x.x.x address instead of the DCHP address supplied by Charter. This started just recently. The only thing that has changed is I installed Lion a few weeks back.
I have gone through three modems or modem/router combos. Two different motorola modem/routers and now the rented modem only motorola from Charter. None of that made a difference.
I have removed all AppleTV’s from the network. I have replaced a hub switch with another one. I have reset computers, renewed leases, started with one device and added more and tested each one. Nothing really seems to work.
This is what I have right now. My main work computer is hard wired to the modem via the switch and is connected to the internet. The family computer is also hard wired and is getting the 169 address. I have two network printers that both are not working. You can see them but you can’t print to them. My iphone and ipad are not working right now because I took the Airport Xtreme router offline to solve the problem.
Now I am at the end of my rope. Any thoughts on these last two ideas.
    1. Get a static IP from charter and assign my own addresses.
    2. Use my Airport Extreme as the next device after the modem and in place of my switch.
    Any thoughts?
    Shawn

#2 is the right idea. You need to reconnect AirPort Extreme even if you're not using Wi-Fi.
Your computers and printers used to get their LAN IP addresses from AirPort Extreme. With that out of the picture, those systems and peripherals self-assign 169.* addresses.
For Charter to be happy, only one device should request an IP address from the cable modem. In your configuration, that should be your AirPort Extreme. Whenever you change the device that's plugged into the modem, you may need to power down your modem for as long as 30 minutes to get it to recognize the new configuration.
Here's how things should probably be wired:
    AirPort Extreme WAN port->cable modem
    AirPort Extreme LAN port->LAN switch
    Desktops, AppleTV, printers, etc.->LAN switch / Wi-Fi
If you have enough Ethernet ports on your AirPort Extreme to accommodate all your devices, skip the switch and do this:
    AirPort Extreme WAN->cable modem
Desktops, AppleTV, printers->AirPort Extreme LAN ports / Wi-Fi
If these arrangements seem not to work, reset your AirPort Extreme to its factory settings, cycle power on the cable modem and AirPort Extreme and try again.
    Best of luck to you.

  • Mac address and device name

    Hello,
Not sure how to explain my requirement, but I will try: How can I broadcast my computer name along with the MAC address? In other words, I have a Netgear WNDR3700 router and when I login to see the "attached devices" I only see the assigned IP and MAC for all our MacBooks. The router page shows other devices (printers, shared hard drives) but I want to identify my Mac also by name and not guess/investigate who's MacBook is.
    Maybe the pic can help.
    Thanks!

Does the device name match up at all with the MAC address? Since you blocked out the MAC address I can't see it but everything after the BRW in the device name looks like a MAC address. Could be the BRW stands for Broardcom something Wireless. Which IIRC Mac's use a Boardcom chip for both Wireless and Wired Ethernet.

  • Reserver IP address via DHCP

I defined a pool of DHCP on IOS software, I want to reserve a IP address to host, I made it, only that doesn't assigned the IP address that I defined in the pool
Help? How I can to do it?
    Example
    ip dhcp pool guestimport all
    network 172.23.12.0 255.255.255.0
    default-router 172.23.12.254
    address 172.23.12.231 hardware-address 0100.14c2.c6ec.42

    Jorge,
First you have to create an IP dhcp pool for your clients, then for a fixed IP address create another IP dhcp pool.
Example, if your MAC is 12.34.12.34.12.34
    ip dhcp pool Client1
    host 172.23.12.200 255.255.255.0
    client-identifier 0112.3412.3412.34
Release the IP and renew IP address and IP address 172.23.12.200 will be assign it.
    Hope this helps.

    JC Arias

  • Reserve IP Address lease by HW Address

Need to configure router to reserve an IP address to a MAC address, so that a specific laptop gets the same IP address even after the lease expires. Do not want to set the wirless NIC, on the laptop, with a static IP, so it can acquire an IP when connecting to other networks.

It depends on your router. The cheaper routers don't support this. Only the more advanced one. Check the manual to find out if it is supported on your router.

  • Linksys WRT54G2. How reserved IP address for a PC on the LAN ?

I want that my PC will always receive the same IP address each time when it accesses the DHCP server.

So all you need to do is enable the DHCP Reservation on your Router. But unfortunately the Router which you have dosent have a DHCP Reservation option. If you want your computer should get the same IP address from the Router, then the best way is to assigne a static IP to your Computers.
Click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>>Network Connections- Right click on the icon for Local area connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the following IP address'- Provide IP Address - 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1- Preferred DNS 192.168.1.1, Alternate DNS - 4.2.2.2 >>Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window.
