Reset about:config

I followed a Mozilla Support article about manually uninstalling a plugin. I got the plugin removed but I remember I had to change a value from true to false or from false to true in the about:config of my Firefox browser. I can't, for the life of me, find this article again and can't remember if I changed this value back afterwards.
First of all, does anyone know what article I'm talking about?
Would this value be something that could negatively affect my experience? (Change something or make something not work right until it's reset to the original value?)
And finally, would uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox reset all the values in the about:config? Would something special need to be done to make the about:config reset? (I don't particularly want to delete all my bookmarks, logins, preferences, etc. though...)
Thanks!!

BTW, that pref isn't need to view the full path to plugins in Firefox 22.0 - plus versions. '''about:plugins''' automatically shows the full path without changing plugin.expose_full_path to true.
And any users who did toggle that preference to true in the past should change it back to false.

  • When opening new tab, how to make me able to type in the adress bar directly without clicking on it? -- (about:config reset and add-on doesn't work)

    Hi all,
Need a help relating New Tab on Mozilla.
I want to be able to directly type in the address bar everytime I open a new tab in Mozilla, without clicking anything. To be clearer, it means that everytime I open the new tab, the blinking cursor is already on the address bar.
What's happening right now is everytime I open new tab, the cursor is not placed anywhere--not on the search bar on the page, not on the address bar. I should put the cursor somewhere to do something.
I tried using the about:config reset (1) and installing custom new tab (2), but both do not work.
When I tried the about:config reset the Reset button is not highlighted (I assume it means it's default already), and the Custom New Tab doesn't yield in different result.
What confuse me is 2 days ago my Mozilla works just fine. Everytime I opened a new tab, the blinking cursor was on the address bar and I was able to type directly.
Thank you and appreciate the help!!
    Note:
    (1) about:config reset:
    - Type about:config into the address bar and press Enter.
    - To bypass the warning, press the big button labeled "I'll be careful, I promise!".
    - In the search box, paste browser.newtab.url
    - In the search results, right-click browser.newtab.url and choose Reset.
    (2) Custom Add On reset:
    - Install Custom New Tab. = https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/custom-new-tab/
    - Open the Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A; Mac: Command+Shift+A), then the Extensions category.
    - Next to Custom New Tab, click the Options button.
    - Set whatever page you want to open in each new tab (about:newtab is the default; about:home is the default home page), and make sure "Place focus in URL bar" is not checked.

ok, as a follow up i'd recommend disabling half of the addons & restarting the browser - if the problem continues disable the other half & continue until you've narrowed it down to the culprit...
    </blockquote>
    Hi Philipp,
I read the link you copied on the first post and also tried your recommendation above. None seem to work. Even if I disable all add-ons, the problem still persists.
One other info, this problem seem to appear after I installed several program yesterday. These programs apparently installed other programs that set my homepage and main search engine to a particular website. But I installed all of these programs already. Would that be a cause of the problem?
    Thanks.

  • When I open up a new tab, I get an "AVG" search result. I already did the about:config reset but it still doesn't work. How can I get a blank tab opened?

When I open a new tab, this always comes up:
    http://isearch.avg.com/tab?cid={7d7746b8-fb39-4619-86fd-792cbc268005}&mid=72dc207d310ff3c58bd4dbeaeddede3a-fe6a71ecae4eb764a90a5203c991f01a6245f52e&ds=AVG&v=13.2.0.5&lang=es-es&pr=fr&d=2012-06-02%2009%3A32%3A49&sap=nt
I already did the about:config reset and it doesn't make the new tab blank or go to a specific URL address that I type in. What can I do to get a blank new tab? Thanks.

I would just like to add to this thread. I have tried everything and every way listed here and found my own solution, for those of you who were having the same issue as me.
    1. Type "'''about:config'''" in your search bar
    2. Click "'''I'll be careful, i promise'''"
    3. Type "'''newtab'''" in the search bar
    4. Find "'''avg.userPreferences.newtabDisabledByUser'''"
    5. Set value to '''true''' by either '''doube clicking''' or '''right click > toggle'''
This immediately deactivated the AVG new tab feature and reset my browser to it's default settings.
    Hope this helps!

  • Reset to 'default' for all printing functions in about:config doesn't work.

I have followed the instructions for resetting FFox printer interface to "default", where it should normally be, to the letter: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problems_printing_web_pages#Reset_printer
The system keeps flipping all the printer settings back to "User". Somehow it went into "User" setting 2 weeks ago, and I was able to correct the problem for a few days by following the instructions on the web page above, resetting just the print.print_printer line, alone. Now, ALL the other "print" lines below this will NOT remain in "default" mode once I've closed the about:config page (tab), or closed the browser and re-opened it, under any circumstances. The problem manifests as: When I try to print, starting from ANY true print command location and finally clicking "OK" to begin printing, I get a small rectangular box saying only, " an unknown error occurred while printing". The box has one of those yellow triangular signs with an exclamation point in it, if that helps. There's no error no. If there's something about the WAY I'm supposed to close the about:config tab, and/or close the browser that is SPECIFIC, I hope someone here can tell me the way I'm supposed to execute this. Thank you.

    1) Any chance that printer shows as "offline" in the printers window in the Control Panel?
    2) Local or network printer?

  • Reset is grayed out in the about:config page after right clicking on specific comands to reset. What do I do?

After being redirected by instructions in your forum, to fix a error message that says that I am using a incompatible browser. Went to about:config then, typed "useragent" in filter line, then to right click on preference name, to click reset. The reset is grayed out, therefore do not present the option to reset. Why is this, and what do I do now?

It is not the user agent as it works for me with your user agent.<br />

I got a new computer and installed Firefox from scratch. The default search engine was set to Yahoo on the new install, but I want to use Google. • FF won't let me select the Epson printer anymore. IE will. Did reset printer in about:config.

Printer is first one in select box. When I select, it jumps back to MS xps file printer. Worked a few days ago. I know MS updated, AFTER the problem started. I also upgrade from 3.6 to 4.0, did not solve problem. Tried safe mode, reset printer in about:config.

The RX680 is the only printer. The other one seams to come in automatically. It came back in when I removed and reinstalled the printer as one of the "fixes". I only reset the one. I have a second problem, that may be the real cause. Drop downs are not working Neither are hovers. The weather app will not show radar, but for a second.

  • I can't seem to remove Incredibar from about:config. When I reset, it still comes back

I have removed ALL instances of incredibar/incredimail from my laptop. When I go into the Firefox configuration (about:config), I reset ALL of the incredibar extensions. However, when I restart Firefox, ALL of the incredibar extensions come back. This is really annoying because I have completely removed incredibar. Please help. Thanks

  • Stop the updates. I told it not to update in the prefs, I reset everything I could find in about:config and it still updates. How do I make it stop.

I have checked all boxes pertaining to auto updates, I have found more settings in about:config and set those appropriately. Still FF autoupdates. How do I make it stop? FF has the options to stop updates, when I use them the updates continue, why are those options there if they do not work?
I read the previous posts on updating, I understand the risks, I fully understand what I am doing when I make this choice. Please do not lecture me.

Please please please don't tell me how important the updates are and how ancient my seven week old insecure version is. Just tell me if I can turn the updates off. That is my question, and I have not found an answer yet.

  • I removed MySearchdial which somehow was installed but the references still show up in about:config.

Noticed MySearchdial had hijacked by search box. Checked and found extension had been added. Deleted extenion, deleted from search engines, reset everything I could. But I noticed many references to "mysearchdial" in the about:config section of Firefox.
My browser appears to be working normal, but it seems these references shouldn't be there if I deleted the extention/add on.
Any suggestions? Doesn't seem like you can delete a line in about:config.

You can't delete lines in about:config but you can reset them by right clicking the pref and selecting Reset to the ones you want to reset to the default values.

  • When closing Firefox windows, I would like a warning before the last window closes. The about:config settings do nothing. There is a warning for multiple tabs..

When closing Firefox windows, I would like a warning before the last window closes. The about:config settings do nothing. There is a warning for multiple tabs... why not for the last window? I do not use tabs... just windows... I have a mouse button programmed for that. It is really irritating to have to restart Firefox all the time and then open the history window because no warning was issued!

This is ridiculous. I've had this problems for years now and I'm finally walking away from Firefox. I use my keyboards more than my mouse, and how many times does your finger slip and hit Command Q instead of W. How come FF can't reset something as trivial as this? So many people are having problems with this?
Feels like FF has become too big, too slow and just not cooperative anymore. What a shame, I've been using Netscape/Firefox for 13 years. This is silly.

  • The print.print_to_filename option in about:config no longer works in Firefox 10 for Linux

I have an older linux box with firefox 3, I believe. And, in about:config I can set the option print.print_to_filename to a path then when I print it defaults to the path I want it to save the PDF to. However, on my new box which has FF10.01 such option doesn't exist and creating it doesn't seem to have any effect. Was this removed? It was a great feature. I don't want to have to install and configure cups again as firefox does the job fantastically. Is there a workaround or can this be brought back in the current version?

The problem exists with https://www.nytimes.com/ so, as a workaround, you can use http://www.nytimes.com/ (not https) or http://nytimes.com where I don't see the problem.
