Reset admin before 10.5 install

I bought a used g5 10.4.11. I didn't get the restore disks with it. To install 10.5 do I have to have the admin password (which I don't have, I have a user level password), or do I have to first get a 10.4 and reset the admin level password? I don't have the 10.4, because my old g4 was on 10.3. Of course I would not want to lose the software on the g5. So do I have to get a g5 restore 10.4 set of disks, to reset the admin (filevault), before I move to a 10.5 install? I read that 10.5 doesn't do a clean install (erase and reformat), true?

Hi
You don't need to know the admin password to install 10.5: you just need to insert the 10.5 DVD, reboot, and hold down C to boot from the CD.
However, I would strongly advise you to reset the admin password first anyway, since you will need it for many things, including updating Leopard to 10.5.6 and installing applications. To do this, reboot from the Leopard DVD as above, and step through the first screen (language choice). Under the Utilities menu, you'll find a Reset Password option. You can use that to choose your hard drive, choose the admin user's name, and change the password. Once that's done, quit from the installer, reboot from your regular system and test the password (eg, lock and unlock a system preference panel).
You briefly mention FileVault, but you don't say whether you're using it. Personally I would turn FileVault off before you do the upgrade to Leopard, for safety.
And finally, yes, 10.5 will do an erase and install if you ask it to. You'll get the choice under the "Options" button a little way into the installation progress.

  • Resetting  Admin password w/o Install Disc

My stepfather let me use his eMac while my DP Powermac is down. He has forgotten the password , and I need to FTP some files of his to my rig to back up , and install Tiger .The original install disc is over an hour away , so not an option. Can I use the Terminal or any other boot sequence to reset it?

Sorry but no. Resetting through the terminal or the user interface would require the original admin password, which you don't have. But if you have the Tiger disk, I think you can similarly reset the PW using that disk. I haven't tried it myself, though, so perhaps it's version specific, but it would be worth a try.
If the Tiger install disk won't work, then you'll have to get the original install disk, I'm afraid.

  • Lost admin pw (OSX), sw install cd only OS9...how do I reset?

Gave my father an older ibook (clamshell) some time back. Installed Panther on it when released. Few days ago he asked to set an admin password on it, series of asterisks appeared below his name/sign-in icon and I asked him if he knew what it was, he said yes, I clicked okay. Turns out it was not what he thought. I know I should have re-entered rather than assuming the asterisks were what he thought he knew. So now, we've rebooted with the original software install cd, but since it reboots to OS9 we [seem to] have no access to the password reset.
Is there some way to reset his admin password via this install cd? The suggestions I've found have only referred to cds that will boot in OSX (where the admin password is situated "...choosing Reset Password from the installer menu"). Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks! Paul

Notice that in "Tiger", the reset password field doesn't contain any bullets - this is probably because the problem you described wasn't uncommon in "Panther" - the bullets were just for show and were hiding characters that had nothing to do with the actual password and people often inadvertently reset their passwords as a result. Since the fields were pre-filled, this also made it possible to change the password from the GUI without having to type it twice for confirmation, further exacerbating the problem.
Try "1234567". Make adjustments if any of the bullets were deleted, or if any additional characters were tagged on to the end at the time the password was set.

  • Can't reset Admin Password

bought computer ibook g4 for wife who forgot admin password. I believe it's
the password I was asked before I could install additional software. I followed
reset instructions: 1) insert 10.4.2 install disk 2) restart computer
    3) hold down "c" key when startup sounds, release when wheel spinning
at this point "installer" should appear where I would click Utilities and
reset password. Instead, the disk loads, where I tried clicking applications>
utilities>reset password and get message "you cannot reset password this way"
As you might gather by reading this email, I am a novice. Any advise before I
pay Apple to reset my password? Thanks so much!

    Hi,
are you able to boot from the CD? What do you mean by "the disk loads"?
How many accounts do you have on this computer? If only one, I assume that you have it set up for automatic login.
If everything else fails and you don't mind creating a new account on this computer, then follow this procedure
    Restart holding command+s
    type: /sbin/mount -uaw
    type: rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    type: reboot
This will delete the file that is created the first time you turn on your computer and you get the "Welcome" movie. It won't do anything to what is already in your account, it'll just create a new admin account (you'll be able to choose a an admin password at that point). When you create the new admin account, make sure that you choose a login and shortname DIFFERENT than those of the account you've forgotten the password of.
Then you just need to log onto that new account, go to System preferences, select Accounts, select your wife's account and you'll be able to reset the password from there.
Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

  • ITunes fails to load.  Message is Service Apple Mobile Device failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services. Never had this problem before trying to install this upgrade

iTunes fails to load.  Message is "Service Apple Mobile Device failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services." Never had this problem before trying to install this upgrade. How do I fix this?

Dave, same problem here.  And I did go in as admin to Administrative Tools, Services, Apple Mobile Devices and tried restarting the service.  It seems there is a bug with the newest update, period.  All of the normal "easy" steps don't work.  Before I remove all of Apple's programs, including Bonjour....I'm running a full system scan.
But the answer will be to remove all of the Apple stuff, then reboot, then use whatever utility you have to remove all temp files...then go download and install it again.  This has worked for several people (I read the thread before posting).  Win 7 64bit.  It just seems that Apple did not thoroughly test this new version.   Period.
If Apple reads this...I have many computers...and whenever Apple wants to update something...it just about stops everything else that is going on.  Total memory hog, even with 16G RAM and dual quad core processors.  It has to learn to play nice with others.
After the scan and I'm sure an hour or two of work...I'll re-post.
Of course if you do image back-ups, as I do, you can simply restore your drive to its previous state and run the previous version of iTunes, declining the update, until Apple gets it right.  Depending on the size of your drive, this could take hours.  It is a matter of choice, of course.

  • AirPort won't auto connect after resetting admin password

The other day I reset my admin password using the install disk and now AirPort won't log on automatically when I start my laptop. Has this happened to any one else? I have tried going through the network preferences, internet connect, and tried a couple of other things and the problem hasn't been fixed.

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • CLI admin password rest using install cdrom not working on ACS 5.5 cumulative patch 1

    Hi,
I can't log onto either of our ACS 5.5 servers using the CLI admin passwords (which we do have recorded and no one appears to have changed ).
I get accessed denied on both.
On our DR ACS I went through the procedure of resetting the CLI admin password using the install cd mounted in the VM (the iso is actually for 5.3) , but even after picking a new password,  I get access denied when I try to use it.
Does anyone know what could be wrong?
Is it possible that patching to ACS 5.5 from ACS 5.3 (a month or so ago) has some how locked out the passwords ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
The reason why it is not working is because you need to use the ISO image or cd for ACS 5.5.
If you try to reset the CLI administrator password with an ISO image or cd for other ACS version it will not take the new password.
Please give it a try with the 5.5 image.

    Gerald

  • Reset admin password - SJSWS 7u8

    Hi,
I've read through the documentation and a few of the other posts about resetting the admin password in SJSWS. Plainly, it doesn't work
    [root@server bin]# ./wadm reset-admin-password --user admin --host localhost --port 8989
    Please enter admin-password>
    Please enter admin-password again>
CLI103 Command 'reset-admin-password' failed. :: netscape.ldap.LDAPRebindI've not been able to find any matches to the 'netscape.ldap.LDAPRebind' error, and don't know why it's talking about ldap in the first place (as SJSWS isn't attached to any LDAP).
The local machine (RHEL5.5, Linux x86_64, amd64 SJSWS install) does use LDAP for authentication, but it shouldn't be trying to touch that.
I can't find any further log entries for the failed password change either.
This is the administration console, with one other node hanging off of it.
    [root@server bin]# . ../lib/wsenv ; $WS_JAVA/bin/java -version
    java version "1.6.0_19"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_19-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 16.2-b04, mixed mode)Any ideas would be welcome ;)

    Unfortunately you've run into a known problem - 6914493.
Edit $(INSTALL_ROOT)/bin/wadm and add ${classpath_prefix}/ldapjdk.jar to the classpath variable and try re-running the command.

  • HT4628 Reset Admin Password

I have just purchased a second hand iMac G4 from a local company. It is running Mac OSX 10.3 with no installer CD and I need to reset the administrator password. Does anyone know how to do this without a CD? Thanks

Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!
     Cheers, Tom

  • Problems resetting admin password

Earlier today, I changed my account to standard and set up a new administrator account then, like a complete idiot, forgot the password. I've tried using the install disk. When I go to Utilities > Reset password, it says select disc from which to reset password but only the install disk is listed. My startup disk isn't listed. I really don't want to have to do a clean install if I can avoid it. Am I doing something wrong?
    Please help!

very strange. this should have worked. try doing it from single user mode then.
restart and hold command+S at the chime. you'll see a black screen with white text. at the prompt enter
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    next enter
    passwd username
where username is the short name of the admin user. enter new password for that user when prompted for it. when done enter
    reboot

  • Resetting admin password from non-original CD

We have a 400 Mhz Powerbook G3 running Mac OS X 10.3.3. We got it from eBay as is––no CD's, no other information. Now that I have inadvertently locked System Preferences, that is a problem because we do not know the admin password.
I see that you can reset the password by booting up from a Mac OS install disc. My question is, would it be possible to do that using the OS X install disc for v. 10.3.7 that came with my iBook G4?

Usually the OEM install disc that comes with a particular computer model will not work with other models. However, you can give it a try. If you can get it to boot the Powerbook, then after the installer loads select Reset Admin Password from the File menu.

UGH, So I forgot my admin password and followed the directions online, or at least I tried. The problem was that in doing so, I could not figure out how to reset the password without re-installing snow leopard 10.6.3 . I now think that I did something wrong because I cannot find the ITunes icon on my desktop and some other icons are not showing up as previous. Help! Do I need to uninstall or something? I'm not very computer savvy so I need detailed instructions!

Mac OS X 10.6 Help- If you forget your administrator password

  • How to reset admin password iMac

I changed my IMac admin password and have now forgotten in and can't find my originàl discs to reset it. I understand you can reset it using apple ID but I can't work it out.  Can someone help me

    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:
(these will only work on Leopard or earlier)
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down
the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each
          command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command
until you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK"
message, then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
    Now, enter:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.
