Reset Admin Password if you forgot???

Please advise if I need to run recovery on my compaq presario if admin. password was forgotten? Where I can run recovery from, I need to purchase cd?

I am afraid that users on this forum won't be able to clear the password or tell you what your Windows password is. This was something that was set at the time the notebook was setup and is not a part of the base image of Windows or the notebook itself.
The standard response is to perform a full system recovery which would result in erasing the HDD and starting over. The HP recovery does have some options built-in to backup data, but it's not guaranteed and copies only what it finds.
There are other options listed in this thread and this thread. These methods are not endorsed or supported by HP. I have not used these methods myself and cannot speak for their validity or how successful they are.

1 The program will ask for the Windows OS hard drive volume. Enter the ID number of the hard drive volume that Windows is installed.

3 The program asks to confirm weather to remove the password or not. Enter "y" (yes) to confirm your action and "n" (no) to deny the action and hit "Enter".

Restart holding the Command and R keys, from the Utilities drop down, choose Terminal. When Terminal opens, type exactly:
resetpassword
And press Enter.
When the Resetpassword window open, highlight the admin account and toe a new password twice, do not enter a hint, and Save. Accept the next dialog that open, and accept the reset of the user home directory permissions.

Unfortunately you've run into a known problem - 6914493.
Edit $(INSTALL_ROOT)/bin/wadm and add ${classpath_prefix}/ldapjdk.jar to the classpath variable and try re-running the command.

Reset Password starting from Recovery HD
Start the computer,then press and hold down command and R keys to start into recovery partition.
When you see the Apple logo, release the keys.
Wait until OS X Utilities window shows up.
Move the mouse to the menubar at the top and click "Utilities", then select "Terminal"
from the drop down.
Terminal window will appear.
Type in resetpassword and press enter on the keyboard.
Leave the Terminal window open.
Reset Password Utility window will open with Macintosh HD selected.
Select the user account from the popup menu box.
Enter a new password.
Reenter the new password for the user.
Enter a hint.
Click the "Save" button.
Click  in the menubar and select Restart.
Log in.
If Keychain dialog box appears, select “Create New Keychain”.

My friend has a G4 ibook with mac osx 10.3.8 installed, unfortunately he has forgotten his password and this prevents him from installing any software now. I have read the support pages from apple which state i should use the installation disc of the original mac os x. This has unfortunately been lost. I have tried with a newer installation disc "tiger" and this does not work. Can anyone help me.

4. Retype ...... “password” <return>
Changing the password in this way has the same effect as changing through "System Preferences".
Reset Admin Password .... using Single User Mode
Hold down (command+S) at startup, you will be presented with a black screen containing a bunch of code... this is called....... Single-User Mode
Type.....
sudo passwd username <return> ... or ...
/usr/bin/passwd username <return>
Type your already existing ..... “old password” <return>
Type in a new...... “password” and verify
Type... reboot <return>

Resetting Admin password w/o Install Disc

My stepfather let me use his eMac while my DP Powermac is down. He has forgotten the password , and I need to FTP some files of his to my rig to back up , and install Tiger .The original install disc is over an hour away , so not an option. Can I use the Terminal or any other boot sequence to reset it?

Sorry but no. Resetting through the terminal or the user interface would require the original admin password, which you don't have. But if you have the Tiger disk, I think you can similarly reset the PW using that disk. I haven't tried it myself, though, so perhaps it's version specific, but it would be worth a try.
If the Tiger install disk won't work, then you'll have to get the original install disk, I'm afraid.

We have a 400 Mhz Powerbook G3 running Mac OS X 10.3.3. We got it from eBay as is––no CD's, no other information. Now that I have inadvertently locked System Preferences, that is a problem because we do not know the admin password.
I see that you can reset the password by booting up from a Mac OS install disc. My question is, would it be possible to do that using the OS X install disc for v. 10.3.7 that came with my iBook G4?

Usually the OEM install disc that comes with a particular computer model will not work with other models. However, you can give it a try. If you can get it to boot the Powerbook, then after the installer loads select Reset Admin Password from the File menu.
