Reset default preferences w/ CS5 on iMac?

Happy Holidays to all.  I'm using Adobe's Classroom in a Book.  On page 12, the prompter to reset default preferences doesn't pop up, so is there another way to reset?  Thankye.

You can manually delete the prefs file. It should be in Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings.
The file in that folder is called:Adobe Photoshop 5 Prefs.psp".
Detailed info here.

  • Changing Defaults/Preferences in CS5 NOT found in the Preferences Pull-Down

Does anyone know how to change the Photoshop CS5 defaults for opening files?
When I open a PDF, the default setting in the import box is CMYK, 300 dpi.  When I open an Illustrator eps, it defaults to CMYK, 72 dpi.
I need to do a lot of batch/droplet work and since those keep doing really wonky things - or don't run at all - I need to be able to drag open bunches of files at a time and run actions manually.  For the moment.
It would be great if there was a way I could change the settings so that each Illustrator file defaulted to open at 300 dpi/RGB.
Does anyone have any thoughts?  or does anyone know if it's possible to manually edit the system pref files (ah, the good old days) for CS5?
Thanks very much, I appreciate the help.
    Shannon

Thank you for your help!  I tried your suggestion, but it defaults back to the original settings each time.
For example, I open an Illustrator eps, change the settings to 300/RGB.  Open a different file, the default settings go back to 72 dpi/CMYK.

  • How to delete/reset Photoshop preferences

Background: Sometimes Photoshop can exhibit odd/erratic/weird behaviour.
The first step is to make sure that you are running the latest version of Photoshop, by applying the relevant updates for your version of Photoshop listed on this page:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows
This behaviour can sometimes be overcome by resetting the Photoshop Preference file, or individual Tool Preferences.
The procedures outlined below are the most common methods of removing the program preferences file.
Q: I am experiencing weird behaviour in Photoshop. - How do I delete / reset my preferences?
    Photoshop versions after 6.0 (including 7.0, CS, CS2 ...CS6):
A:If a tool is behaving erratically, first try resetting just that tools preferences, via the method outlined by Len Hewitt in the post below this one.
If you have larger troubles, hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences/settings file.
A2: You can also simply search your hard drive for a *.psp file and delete it. It will be called something along the lines of "Adobe Photoshop X Prefs.psp".
Under Vista or 7, look here:
Users/[Username]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version #]/Adobe Photoshop [version #] Settings
Under Win 2k/XP the preference file will be found at:
    %windir%\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\[version #]\Adobe Photoshop [version #] Settings
[NOTE: You need to set Window's Explorer Options to "View Hidden Files and Folders" to display the Preference file]
    Photoshop Versions 5.5 and earlier:
Search for photos*.ini and delete (the file will be called photos followed by the version number - i.e photos55.ini for Photoshop 5.5, photos40.ini for Photoshop 4.0)
Resetting the preferences will restore Photoshop settings to factory defaults.
If removing the preferences files does not resolve the problem you should check the Photoshop Support pages for further guidance.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/products/photoshop.html
Note that it is possible to keep a 'healthy' copy of the Preferences file, so that you simply overwrite the preferences file if needed. That way you won´t have to re-adjust your preferences in Photoshop after a Reset.

Is one of your tools behaving strangely — or not the way you expect — in Photoshop?
For every tool in Photoshop's Tool Box, the user may choose to fully reset JUST that tool to its default settings. To do this, look up to the Options Bar. On the far left side you will see a button which displays an icon of the currently selected tool. This is the Tool Preset picker. Right-click on this button, and you will see two entries:
    Reset Tool
    Reset All Tools
The first thing to try when a tool is not acting like you expect it should is to apply the command "Reset Tool" from this menu. Often this will cure a problem, and by starting your Photoshop troubleshooting with this procedure you aren't resetting Photoshop's entire behavior and environment to factory default in a wholesale manner. Instead, you're just getting that particular tool back to its default settings, leaving the rest of Photoshop's settings alone.
The second option would be more appropriate in a classroom setting, to get a "fresh version of Photoshop", rather than for troubleshooting Photoshop issues.
If this doesn't cure the problem you're having, then you may need to move on to deleting/resetting all of your Photoshop preferences to factory default.

  • Safari constantly resets default prefs on restart after bootcamp

    Hello All,
This problem has been rearing its annoying head for quite a while!! Safari on Mac OS X runs fine.. It is only after running Windows/Bootcamp and rebooting into OS X that I find Safari has reset to default preferences and all my homepage/customized toolbar are gone!! This happens EVERY time I use Windows..
    Any ideas..?

Imagine a puzzled person. That'll be me then
I think you and [KingRichard|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1868672&tstart=5 0] should form a "BootCamp against Safari group"
Can you answer the last question in that thread as well (i.e. does the Safari preference file go missing completely after using XP, or has it magically restored to a default file)?

  • How to load/refresh default preference plists

    Hi guys,
I am facing the following problem at the moment: we got a couple iMac clients in a computer pool bound to an AD, which as a default disables the secondary mouse button on the AD user's account on first login.
So I came up with the idea of running a script on startup which basically runs the terminal command
    defaults write com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse Button2 -int 2
which works fine, but sadly it only takes effect after the next login. What it does is essentially manipulating the file com.apple.driver:AppleHIDMouse.plist in the user's Library/Preferences/ directory.
So I'm trying to figure out now how to reload this plist file to have it's changes take effect right away. Unfortunately the mechanics of these preference plists are not well documented.
Does anyone know how I can make the system reload defaults/preferences from this file?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jo

  • JavaScript to load default Preferences

    Hello
I ideally would like when indeisgn resets its preferences they are loaded in my default set instead of Adobe default set of preferences.
I have seen Preferences manager which looks like Javascript but of course its a jsxbin file and therefore i can not see the code.
Also i was hoping to just use a simple javascript
Does anyone know how to backup/restore load Indesign Prefernces via javaSCript?
    Thanks

    Hi Chris,
    1. check your syntax, you don't need "javascript:" in onchange/onload
    2. use the Firebug addon to Firefox to debug the javascript code

  • Default CC or CS5.5?

    Hi,
We have a customer that is trialing Adobe CCFT, on the same device they have CS5.5. If they're sent, say, a Photoshop CS file and double click to open, what will be the default software to open it, CS5.5 or CC?
Customer wants the default to be CS5.5 in the short term whilst they go through the migration.
    Many thanks!

No. You can only buy current versions. If your machine allows, it would be easier to just upgrade OSX, otehrwise you'll have to find a legit used copy of these older versions, which might prove quite difficult...

Just a few days ago migrated from older iMac running 10.6.8 to new iMac running 10.9.4
I have the PS (and Indesign CS5) disc but am reluctant to attempt a reinstall, based on forum items where things were made worse
At the moment my work around is to print in Indesign.

  • Open CC applications to default preferences with no user input

I am searching for a way to open CC applications to default preferences with no user input. I understand there is a key board short cut (command/option/shift on start) but I am hunting for a way to have the preferences always revert to default. In the past I have written a script to delete the preference files upon computer start up but once again, it needs to be rewritten. Is there a method that does not require KLUDGE?

  • Windows 8 - Resetting InDesign preferences

    Hi
I'm used to resetting InDesign (another CS products) using Shift+Ctrl+Alt. However, having recently changed to Windows 8, this doesn't seem to work. I can still reset the preferences manually and clear the recently used items list manually but not by using the keyboard cmds when launching the program.
Anyone any ideas how to achieve this.
    Thanks

The way I do is to press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT before clicking on the launch Icon.  This is what I get if I do it that way:

  • Setting Default Preferences for All Users in Crystal Reports Server 2008 v1

We are currently looking to set the default preferences in the CMC for all of our users.
I did locate this page Link: [How to set default preferences for all users in Infoview 3.1/CRS 2008]
The first part of the thread did seem promising but I am unable to find the sample .jsp code that people recommended.
I would assume that this scenario is common enough that someone knows a way to set universal preference defaults.
    Thank you

I thought I could just run it too but when I attempt to I get a Windows Script Host error:
    Script: C:\User Prefs.vbs
    Line: 1
    Char: 1
    Error: Expected statement
    Code: 800A0400
    Source: Microsoft VBScript compilation error.
I noticed the first most line seems to be markup for a web interface though I am not familiar with vbs so I may be wrong.  I used the publishing wizard to put the script on the CMC to attempt to run it through the CMC but it still does not work.

  • Constantly resetting Cs2 Preferences

I would like to know why I have to reset Photoshop Cs2 preferences often.  Every week the brushes doesn't work, so I have to press Ctrl, Alt and Shift.  I went into the nine preferences box and reset everything.  I also did my color settings and save the settings.  Is there a way that I can stop resetting the preferences so often?. Thank you.
    Gerald Sr.

    Gerald,
It may not make much difference at this time of the year, but you should repost in the Photoshop Windows forum, http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_windows.
Never going there myself, I will venture to add the following although it is completely out of place, or should I say forum:
The cause is probably Windows corrupting one or more preference files while saving them when you close down.
Instead of using the Ctrl+Alt+Shift which will wipe out the preferences, including those you wish to keep, you can probably save them for later use by performing the Photoshop equivalent to what is described here for illustrator, namely to Move the folder. I believe the folder is called Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings, and you may search for it in the same way (including hidden files and folders); you may learn the right name in the forum if I am wrong.
Good luck over there, and Happy New Year.
