  • Is there a way to reset keychain passwords from server.app?

We have a Lion server and a number of Macs that authenticate with the server through open directory. On occasion users have forgotten passwords, and so I've reset them from server.app. I've tried both getting them to enter their password on the server, or setting their password to "password" with reset at next login set, but both methods result in an issue whenever the user logs in where they're prompted to create a new keychain or use their old one (which is not possible because they have forgotten the password to unlock it). This is frustrating for me and users.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this how it is supposed to work? It'd be a real pity if the latter was true, and would go against the idea that "it just works" on the Mac.

That's the way it works. Due to the nature of a Keychain, and what is potentially stored in it, once a password is forgotten you need to use a new Keychain and all data within is "lost". If there were a way to reset the Keychain password then you can grab anyone's Keychain, insert it into another account and then use the reset password to get all of the data out of it… at which point there's little point to password protecting it at all.

  • How to reset Firmware Password? iMac, Lion, 10.7.3

I forgot the Firmware Password, and want to reset it.
    How can I do it?
No DVD included when I bought it.
All the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, does NOT work.
To add or remove DIMMs does NOT work.
Please, give me some helpful answer.

    I saw this image last night. ( http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac-Intel-20-Inch-EMC-2266-Teardown/658/2 )
I thought it's for something like BIOS,
    but now I see
"the iMac clock battery (190 mAh) stacks up with the 17" Unibody's behemoth"
Maybe u r right, I will not be able to reset Firmware
even I remove this battery... ㅠㅠ
    Also, the link https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3046 says
"Parameter RAM is a small area of non-volatile RAM"
    arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
But ㅠㅠ I'll try all that I can.
    Thank you everyone.

Good to know that, but what can I do to get the mail and contacts downloaded from Icloud onto my Iphone?  I am told that the password needs to be reset and I have erased and reset it 3x's already? Should I Restore All Settings or Restore Network Settings or will that result in a situation where I have to have it re-unlocked again? GRACIAS!

  • Trying to restore my Mac OS  after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

I am trying to restore my Mac OS after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combinationcommand-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • How do  you reset the root password in Mountain Lion?

After install of Mountain Lion on my old iMac, I could not enter administrator, no password would work, Apple support helped me go through terminal to reset root password and root as administrator . I then was able to reset myself as administrator with a new pasword. I used that paassword a few times now it wont accept it again. I dont remember all the steps to reset the root password and recover from this situation.. Can anyone help?  Is this a bug in Mountain Lion?

I'm having similar issues but other concerns
    1. Can't go into recovery mode since its protected by firmware password, which I don't have. All option keys sequences go into the same firmware padlock, which I don't have the apparent pin.
    2. In terminal mode it didn't happen to recognize that unix command.  Also since I'm just on guest would that reset for the admin or possibly the guest acct?
    3. I've done the DIMM pulls and even though older model, 2011, it didn't appear to a reset for the firmware password.
    Any other options??

I've installed Mountain Lion, and installed my Time Machine back up.  The problem is that when I try to log in it own't accept my password giving me the message
    CSSM_ERRCODE_MEMORY_ERROR.
I've tried to set up another administor account and it will let me unlock as the old password is correct.  But  ... still won't let me log into my inital account.
I've just aobut had a gust full of Mountian Lion so I would like to access my files on the back up and then delete Mountian Lion and revert back to Snow Leopard which seems to be alot more useful for me.
    Any help?

If no go, then try this, posted elsewhere  by Linc Davis:
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” and press return. A Reset Password window opens.

You would have to assign Admin role permission to users in EAC.
To understand this concept in more depth, I would refer you at this well described article : http://www.mustbegeek.com/reset-user-password-in-exchange-2013/
Or, you may use any third party like, (http://www.selfservicepasswordreset.org/) that seems to be an appropriate approach in your environment. This tool allows end-users to perform self password reset
and self account unlock from any computer in the network through a web-browser or directly from the login screen without any assistance from the administrator. Administrator can configure strong policy for automatic account unlock and automatic reset
password at a specified time for any particular domain OU's.

  • Reset admin password on os x server

we acquired a os x server from a company we purchased and don't have either the server software or the admin passwords to login. Can anyone give me instructions on how to reset the password. I do have OS X Tiger on DVD but not server? Thanks.

As for OS X Server there are two datastores for users/accounts:
    a) accounts in Netinfo datastore, like on any other OS X Client OS has
    b) accounts in LDAP/OpenDirectory
To reset a) just boot off the cd, there is a "reset passwd" GUI provided.
    b) is trickier and therefore you need to interact with another separate datastore that is used just for passwords. Guess what it's named? Right: PasswordServer.
It has a cmdline utility called "mkpassdb". See "man mkpassdb".
You will then use "mkpassdb -dump" to see the entries it has and "mkpassdb -setpassword" to change passwords.
    Good luck,
    -Ralph

  • Resetting login password on OS X Server 10.3

I need to reset a password on a OS X server 10.3, so I can log into it. Is it the same as when you want to do a password reset on a MacBook, Mac mini etc.. where you boot off the cd and use the password reset utility? I have no idea what the admin password is, so that is why I need to do it.

Wow.  You are making many of us strain our brains.  10.3...  Time to upgrade.
So yes, the CD should allow for password recovery.  This is the days of NetInfo (how I miss it so).  You are actually able to reset the password using Single User mode and a bit of terminal magic.  Follow these steps if you don't have the disk.
1:  Boot into Single User Mode by holding down Apple - S on startup.
2: Mount the file system so you can write to it with this command:
              mount -uw /
3: Next start the NetInfo subsystem by typing the following command:
              /sbin/SystemStarter
4: You will see a bunch of messages go by.  Eventually the logging will stop but you will not get a command prompt.  When the messages stop, simply hit the Return key.  This will drop you out of the previous command and present you with a command prompt.  The last line I think states System Started.
5: If you know the short name of the user type this command to reset the password, replacing shortname with the user's shortname:
              passwd shortname
6: You will be prompted to enter a password.  The input is shadowed so type carefully.
7: You must confirm the password.
8: When finished, type reboot to reboot the system.
