Reset EFI or looking at an EFI log

Is there a way to reset the EFI-settings (if there are any) to factory default or similar?
Recently I am suddenly unable to boot Windows devices (internal HD, install DVDs).
I can see them in the startup sequence (holding Option), but selecting them results in nothing.... for several minutes and then an automatic reboot.
Is there a logfile i can consult so i can see what is going on?

Hi Stefan,
caught me there ;- )
Up to now I never had that kind of problem with my Mac Pro, or better no problem at all (knock on wood).
rEFIt is the only application I know of, which claims maintenance abilities for the EFI.
Found this right here: http://macalex.livejournal.com/
As you know, or may know, EFI support password protection but it doesn't work the way it should work.
If you try to setup EFI password protection according to this tech article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
Then you'll get blocked all boot up short cuts and won't be able to boot even from system DVD and EFI won't ask you password. So, if you'll get some day system crashed on the System HD then you won't be able to recover it from any external or even internal system boot drive because all short cuts blocked.
The only a solution to recover from this situation is *reset EFI*. You need physically remove RAM from your intel Mac, so you need to change physically the size of the RAM, after that you need to start your Mac and reset PRAM (CommandOption+PR) 3 times, then EFI will be reset by default after that you'll be able to boot from external or internal system storage. I would not recommend to use Firmware Password Utility on intel based Mac's because it doesn't work properly at the moment. Apple is working at the moment to solve this problem.
Not sure if it can help you.
Good Luck
Stefan

  • Does the SCOM 2012 agent "look back" in the logs before the service was started?

Does the SCOM 2012 agent "look back" in the logs before the service was started?<o:p></o:p>
We raised this question to our Microsoft rep back when we migrated to SCOM 2007. We wanted to know if SCOM would alert on errors generated before the Heath Service started. For example, errors
logged before the service is started on reboot (which is when some critical errors are logged). We also wondered what happens when the service is restarted...would errors during the same window be missed?
If I remember correctly the MS response was that the agent looks back on startup/restart based on a timestamp of some kind. We did some testing that seemed to confirm this information. I've
recently encountered several instances of errors generated while the service was stopped (primarily during boot up) where SCOM failed to alert on the error.
Can anyone confirm how the SCOM 2012 agent deals with errors generated before the service starts on boot and during service restarts?

I would suspect it's with watermarks as it has been in the past.  What you should look into is if these alerts you were expecting are event based, and if there are rules set to alert for these conditions.  If so, and you don't get an alert,
then you can bring that up with your msft rep.  However, they should be caught.
Regards, Blake Email: mengotto<at>hotmail.com Blog: http://discussitnow.wordpress.com/ If my response was helpful, please mark it as so, if it answered your question, then please also mark it accordingly. Thank you.
There is a watermark. If the agent has been down for a significant period of time, the watermark may not apply, as the log would have rolled - but the entire log will still be processed regardless of what has already been discarded in the log. This may cause
some problems if a monitor picks up an unhealthy state, and the healthy state log entry has already been flushed. In this case, you need to reset health on that particular monitor, or just flush the cache on the agent to start anew.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tends to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Premiere Constantly Crashing, please look a the crash logs.

I've spent the last two days trying to clear this up.
    Here's my deal.
Feels like it crashes when I'm working in the timeline... move the mouse, click a shot in the timeline whatever.  But I have probably crashed 25 times in 2 days.
    I have tried all the usual things;
    Cuda update
    Software only.
    Trash permisions
    repair permissions
Adobe folder permissions to write & read
If someone can look at these crash logs and tell me what is going on I would be overjoyed.

  • How to reset EFI password ??

i got stuck on efi password . how to reset and can i update my os without efi password ??

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the arrow button below the icon.
From the menubar select Firmware Password from the Utilities menu.
Yes, you can upgrade software without a firmware password, but you do need an admin password for your login account. I think you have these two confused.

  • My husband plugged in a password and we don't know what it is and cannot log onto the new computer.  How can I reset the password if I can't log on?

My husband was setting up the iMac he got us for Christmas.  I already have a MacBook Pro.  I do not know the sequence of events but I do know he wanted to use my iTunes account on the iMac so I provided passwords.  Now we cannot log onto the computer using any of my passwords.  He must have mistyped something.  How do we log onto the computer if we can't figure out what the password is?

If it's a new Mac I guess it's running Lion, if so, hopefully this'll help:

  • Looking for multiple graph logging suggestions

I have a "host program" that is attached to a cRIO platform used for precision controlling of some heavy machinery.  The current host is used to set parameters, but primarily to read values and display trends for the operators and maintenance personnel.  I had previously been looking for a method to put a correct timestamp on my historical charts, which allow the user to scroll back if something odd occurs, but this has become more trouble than it is worth.  One of my main difficulties in all of this is that I have 6 synchronized graphs that need the "roll back" ability, and putting a live timestamp on a chart you must be able to pause and rewind is unfathomably difficult with LabVIEW...
So, I have decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, so to speak.  I needed to work out logging the graphed signals to file anyhow, so I decided I might as well just do this and externally reference the log files for the "rewind" functionality.  My problem now is finding the best approach to log these 6 graphs of differing types...  The first graph has 3 overlaid analog values, the second graph has 2 overlaid values, and the last 4 are each just a single individual (scaled) sensor reading.  The graphs are updated every 100ms.  Accurate timestamps (date and time) need to be attached to the data as well.
This logging is a new arena of LabVIEW for me, but I figured there has to be at least a few experienced users or developers out there who know all of the ins and outs.  Any suggestions on the best way for me to log this data?  Individual files for each chart, or is there a better method to combine the data to keep it cleaner (not multiple files to track)?  Are there pitfalls I should be watching out for?

Take a look at tdms files.  They are a binary format that is open (www.ni.com/white-paper/5696/en).  You can define groups of channels and they can be logged at different rates.  The LabVIEW API makes it relatively easy to retrieve a channel or group, although it may be more challenging to find a specific time if your files are large.  Besides the examples included with LabVIEW, you can drill down into the TDMS File Viewer that's in the TDMS palette for another example.  Also, there is a plug in for Excel that will allow it to import TDMS files (zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/2944).

My screen went high-contrast.  color profiles and calibration didn't work well -
    HOWEVER-
It looks fine right before I log in!
Is there a way to repair the color profiles or whatev?
I Installed Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements a couple weeks ago that's when I think it began

I found it!  "Enhanced Contrast" was set in the "Universal Access" control panel
