Reset Forgotten File Vault Master Password

Is there any way to reset the file vault master password?
I must have set it about 5 years ago, and the migration tool has moved it to my new machine. I have completely forgotten, and the hint I left myself has me even more baffled.
I remember all the user/admin accounts, just not the file vault one.
Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

The FileVault Master Password is stored in the
FileVault Master keychain. This keychain is located
in /Library/Keychains next to the FileVault
Master X.509 certificate and System Keychain.
You don't have to delete these files to reset the
FileVault Master Password, just move the FileVault
Master Keychain and companion FileVault Master
certificate to another folder. When you open System
Preferences, it will behave as though you never set a
FileVault Master Password, and will allow you to set
a new one.
My daughter set me up as a user on her computer that I bought for her when she was 18 with limited access to use only the internet. She has got married and moved to New York in March 2007. She says she can't remember her master password and I am unable to use the MAC to its full without her administrator master password. I have no access to system prefernces when I click on File either.

  • How can I reset my computer's master password?

I reset my master password at a one to one session, and now I can't remember it! HELP! I've tried every variation I can think of. I read that I can reinstall Mac OS X. Will that override the password and allow me to set a new one? Also will reinstalling Mac OS X erase all my files/pics/music???

You didn't mention what Mac or version of OS X she has, but generally, for versions earlier than 10.7, you need the original installation disk (CD/DVD) or a compatible retail version of OS X. Boot from the disk by holding down the C key (or Option key if that doesn't work) while you restart; use the Utilities menu from the installer to reset your password.
If it's a 10.7 installation, you can hold down command-R to boot from the recovery partition and do the same thing there.

  • Tiger forgot my File Vault master??

A while back I tried File Vault, and as such set a master password. Due to some quirkiness, I turned File Vault off. Since I turned FV off, I wanted to change the master password to something easy just in case I decide to enable it again, and I don't want to forget my stronger password.
However, it seems that Tiger forgot my password! When trying to change the MP, I put in what I'm 99% sure is the right password, yet it is not accepted. Has anyone else had this issue? It's possible that I actually am not entering it properly, but if other people have the problem, then I know I'm not crazy.
    Thanks!

Well, if you are not 100% sure about your master password, I'd say there is a good chance you aren't entering it correctly. The other outside chance is that the FileVault System Preferences have become corrupt.

  • Is there any way to reset the account or master passwords without logging into the account?

    Dear All,
My desktop has locked me out.
It says that my account and master passwords are wrong.
Is there any way to reset these passowrds without logging into the account?
    Thanks

Yes by booting the system from either the OS X install DVD or from the Recovery HD partition and using Terminal to bring up the Reset Password system.

  • How to reset forgotten Equium's BIOS password?

    Hey,
I just had my laptop repaired after 2 years and i've forgotten the password that I need to put in as soon as it starts booting up, before you can get into BIOS options and put your account password in etc.
Is the only way to repair it by paying toshiba to do it? and if so, where do i send it and how much would it cost?
    thanks

    Hi
Im afraid you will not be able to remove the password.
Only the authorized Toshiba service provider could remove the password
So it seems that you need to get in contact with an local ASP in order to get rid of BIOS password.

  • How can I recover my master password, set up by mistake, without losing all my existing login / password data?

When touring the latest version of Firefox I created a master password and unfortunately never wrote it down. Now I must get my Church's taxes and W-2's done and I'm unable to login to my state and IRS/SSA accounts as I don't have my latest logins and passwords because they were all stored in my older version of Firefox. Everything I've read, so far, states that resetting the master password will result in the loss of all my login and password data. I cannot have this happen! There has to be some way I can either recover my login and password file data or the password I created for my master password? I need help with this ASAP as time is running out.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately it is not the solution I am hoping for. Both of the links you posted clearly state that resetting or removing my master password will result in the loss of all my existing login and password data. I wouldn't have a problem with that if I could save or print out my current, but hidden by the password manager until I enter my master password, login and password data which I could eventually reproduce within password manager. Unfortunately this is the only place where I have all that data recorded and we are talking about many many lines of login data!

  • Master password incorrect sometimes..?

After not using my desktop for a week, I came home and woke up my computer and the "required password" that I requested to wake up my computer came up. I entered in THE CORRECT password, many many times, and it said incorrect. I shut down the mac, started it back up and logged in to my account using the very same password. LIKE MAGIC, it worked, so I decided to change the master passwrod to be safe. I went into security>file vault>change password and a prompt to enter the master password popped up, so I entered in the MAGIC password again, and it lets me in. Then it requests the current master password to be entered, in order to CHANGE the password, and it says INCORRECT!!!
    What the crap. Help me.

Documentation says the capitalization in the User_Name field is NOT case sensitive, but I have found Sometimes it is.
Since I have been burned by this, I recommend you explore the capitalization in the User_Name. It is the combination of the two that is rejected, not just the password.

  • Do I need to turn off File Vault before I erase a hard drive?

I have a File Vault 2 password set up on my Mac, in addition to a firmware password.  I'm selling the computer, and I want to make sure everything is wiped out.
I know how to turn off the firmware password.  However, I was wondering if I need to turn off file vault 2 before I start up the OS in recovery mode, at which point I will erase the hard drive using the 7-pass delete option in disk utility. Or do I not have to worry about that, and go ahead and boot up on the internal system HD in recovery mode to delete the HD entirely, without turning off File Vault first?
    Thanks for the help,
    Eric

Boot from the installation disc that came with the computer and repartition the internal drive with the default options. Then install the original OS.

  • Forgotten master password (but also have file-vault enabled)

Ok to clarify this is not me but my lovely dozy girlfriend and her Macbook...
I did read about deleted some library files somewhere but since she had filevault enabled i hear that method might not work.
To add insult to injury she also didn't make a back up.. So i ask everyone here, is it at all possible to fix this problem and retrieve the data without doing a re-install of Mac OS??
She will bake a cake for anyone who can solve this problem.

If i had any idea how to do that i would certainly try
@Cathy, sorry my typo... delete not deleted. It was reference to a fix where a user on another forum suggested deleting 2 specific files located somewhere in the library folder. Apparently it removes the master password, however it does not work once filevault has been enabled.
@JSD2: Will ask her to try her login password when she gets home.
Thank you all for the speedy responses.

  • Forgot Master Password, no acct File Vault: How to get rid of Mst Password?

    Hi -
I am embarrassed, mortified, and humbled about having to post this because it's not about 'someone I know' but about something careless that I did.
This morning, I set up a second account with File Vault on my MBA (Late 2010) to keep sensitive files in it. While setting it up, I set a Master Password which I hadn't enabled before this morning. I used the password generator and used one that I dutifully copied on the clipboard with the intention of IMMEDIATELY copying it into my 1Password app. Then I set up the second account with File Vault.
Well, of course, something distracted me, I habitually copied something else on the clipboard, and I lost the Master Password from my clipboard. (I know, I've been kicking myself ever since...)
Here's my question: The Master Password is not protecting any content in File Vault and I would like to disable the forgotten Master Password and set up one that I really will remember (at least, that's the plan!). How can I do this?
I deleted the new account and I have only one other which is the primary administrator account that is not protected by File Vault. Thanks in advance for any help on this!

As explained there, and for obvious security reasons, a new master password created in this fashion way will not unlock any pre-existing FileVault accounts. So resetting the master password is only useful after you have turned off FileVault in all existing accounts, as is true in your case.

How can I locate the file /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.cer to reset my master password? Thanks!

The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

  • Having trouble changing master password as i have forgotten it and can not get it to reset please help

I have tried to remember what the first pass word was and can not get it done. i can not send out emails on both of my email accounts [email protected] or [email protected] as both request password. when i have tried to reset master password it will not except any thing that i am doing. i need to send out emails for my work and having trouble doing the change. Please help

The master password protects saved passwords in Thunderbird and has nothing to do with connecting to your providers server. You need to work with your email provider if you have forgotten your email password. Go to their email help site and look for a link to reset your password.

  • What do you do if you've forgotten the master password for reset and you've thrown out the gift reciept? HELP??????????

How do you reset the iPad if you've forgotten the master password and threw out the gift reciept?

Contact the person that gave it to you.  See if they have a receipt.
Apple doesn't use the term master password.
There are two different locking mechanisms:  passcode, prevents access to your data,  and activation lock, prevents use of device if stolen.  You do not want the students setting the activation lock.
If the passcode is set & forgotten , you can reload from backup or wipe ( first typed whip ) the device.
iPhone or iPad locked from incorrect passcode.
If you enter the wrong passcode six or more times, you'll see a message that says Ipad is disabled.
See how to restore from backup.  No back up on your computer, click on the triangle before "If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer"

    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1212
The problem arises when someone sets the activation lock which is set by logging onto your apple id then setting the appropriate option.   DEP is the preferred preventative.  It established your organization as the owner.  The student cannot set an activation log.

If the usual method does not work, you can also do this manually.
    # Open your profile folder, for details of how to find it see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles
    # Close Firefox
    # In the profile folder delete key3.db, signons.sqlite, and if they exist signons.txt, signons2.txt and signons3.txt
That will delete all passwords and remove the master password.
