Reset MacBook Pro to factory defaults

Hi, I recently did a fresh install of OS X Mavericks on my recently purchased MacBook Pro 13" in hopes of resetting everything to their original settings.
When everything finished, I found everything was exactly the same as it was- all of my music (from cd's, I don't purchase anything from the iTunse store), my dock modifications, background changes, etc. were all left to what I had changed them to after I purchased my new MacBook Pro. I was hoping a fresh install would have reverted everything to the factory settings (including the original dock, Safari settings, desktop background, etc).
I am very OCD and wanted everything wiped and reverted to stock settings.
If anyone knows how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

You need to use the Disk Utility in the Utilities menu to erase the partition with Mac OS X installed and then install Mavericks.

  • I'm trying to reset Macbook Pro to factory.  I have the disk, but when I try to reboot from the disk, holding down "c", it just goes straight to installation.   Any help is appreciated.

I read the directions from Kappy on how setting my Macbook Pro to factory settings.  I put the OS disk in, rebooted while holding down 'c'. I got the choose language, but then it goes to 'installation', no menu.  Am I doing something wrong?

    Erase and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the Snow Leopard installation.

To restore your computer to factory settings:
    1. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
After reinstalling OS X, you will have to reinstall your iLife applications. If your Mac came with DVDs, just insert the Applications disc and install them. If your Mac didn't come with DVDs, open App Store > Purchases, and download the iLife applications

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

  • Hi, I am going to reset my Macbook Pro to factory settings but I would like to back it up first. I have backed it up to an external Hard Drive so if I were to wipe the laptop, would i be able to retrieve all of my files and applications

Hi, I am going to reset my Macbook Pro to factory settings but I would like to back it up first. I have backed it up to an external Hard Drive so if I were to wipe the laptop, would i be able to retrieve all of my files and applications. (Office Mac, Adobe CS6, Logic Pro)

When OS X asks you to restore a backup, it will allow you to select what you want to restore from the backup, Just select the things you need, because if you select everything, you will be in the same status as before restoring the Mac to factory settings. This has nothing to do with erasing the hard drive
It's OK to make backups with Time Machine

Use a alias, but you might have to use a zip code that matches the location used.
Also if you click the right button there is a way to bypass the registration, like register later or something, Apple has it hidden. Also to bypass the internet connection to send the registration off.
Never place your name on a Mac or PC, it's spread throughout the entire machine, in emails, on the network in plain sight etc.

I have just porchased a Mac Book, and importing video/audio with no issues.(latest software installed on both systems).
Is there a way to reset iMovie back to "factory defaults"?
    Many thanks.
    Eli

    Bev hi,
Many thanks for your prompt reply.
    Fantastic,all works as it should.
If any other users out there experience "slow" audio or the audio lagging behind the video when importing HD (Sony) tapes into iMovie, try Beverley's tip.It worked for me.
    Cheers

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: Be sure you have an active internet connection.

How do I restore my macbook pro to factory to resell it?

You'll need both gray discs that shipped with your MacBook Pro. If you no longer have them you can (with your serial number handy) order a set from Apple for around $20.
Then follow the instructions here -> How to prepare your Mac for sale.
Note that you MUST restore with the original OS that shipped with your Mac!

How do I restore my macbook pro to factory setting

Lion installs both itself and a Recovery HD. Booting the latter is how you reinstall Lion or fix things with Disk Utility. So, what you can do is this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Now, this will completely erase the volume in which Lion is currently installed. When you then reinstall Lion it will be like coming fresh from the factory ready for a new user. I hope this is a working solution for your problem. If it is not, then I would encourage you to create a new topic more relevant to your needs which will solicit others to offer help. That isn't going to happen in someone else's already old topic. Had I not forgotten to stop email notifications from this topic, then I never would have been aware or your post.

I made the mistake of resetting my iPod to factory defaults. Now it will only partially sync to my music library. I continually get an error message saying that certain songs are not authorized for my computer, although they are in the iTunes library on the computer and will play. It's these songs that won't transfer to the iPod. I have deauthorized and re-authorized the computer but no joy. Any ideas?

    Hello there DesertRat71,
I was thinking that some of the songs in your library may have been purchased under a different apple id. You have already done the first thing I would have done by de authorizing and re authorizing. To verify this, highlight one of the songs that will not sync over and use File>Get Info. Here is the help menu link for it if you need it help://bookmark='https://help.apple.com/itunes/mac/11.0/help/index.html?localePa th=English.lproj#itns2937'
In the Summary section there will be an Apple ID entry. If it shows something different than what you are currently using then I recommend signing into the Apple ID it shows and authorizing the computer for that one as well.
    All the best,
    Sterling
