Reset-nvram, reset-all necessary with RAM upgrade/EFI?

When you upgraded or downgraded ram with the ppc architecture it was always best practice to reset-nvram, reset-all within open firmware. I've gone through apple's documentation and done a little research on the internets and can't find out if this is still necessary.
Since intel macs are using EFI instead of Openfirmware, is this no longer necessary?

Thanks for the reply. Just installed 2gb (2x 1gb transcend sticks)
So far so good:
1.83ghz, wifi, bt, dashboard widgets off, no apps running
Xbench @ 512mb = 48.31 on batt, 'normal'
Xbench @ 512mb = 45.18 on AC, 'best performance'
Xbench @ 512mb = 60.29 on batt, 'normal'
Xbench @ 2gb = 59.09 on AC, 'best performance'
Apple System Profiler reports that both transcend sticks are running @667mhz, which was a problem with patriot mem.
The 2x256mb sticks I pulled out were hynix mem: HYMP532S64BP6-Y5 AB, I was surprised. I thought apple used samsung for these macbooks.

  • Problems with RAM upgrade iMac G5 1.8GHz

    Stuck - Need Help!
I've previously upgraded up iMac to 2 500Mb RAMs and felt recently that it needed that little bit extra, so I ordered two 1Gb chips from crucial.
Followed instructions to T, but with the two new chips in, the machine won't load.
Interestingly, it boots up with the following RAM combinations
    old 500MB + new 1GB (in any combination) - recognised as 1.5GB
one new 1GB RAM (again either one) - recognised as 1GB
I spoke to crucial who said that as the RAMs work individually, there isn't a problem with them, it could be a Firmware issue. I've upgraded all my software, and don't know what to do next?
Anyone overcome a similar problem in the past?
    Thanks

I'm experiencing something very similar to shaow. I'll share my experience in gory details - sorry for the long post but I've spent more hours trying to stabilize. I should have worked the hours at walmart and bought a new iMac with the money I could have earned
    Anyway, here goes:
Two iMac G5 1.8Ghz 17" (both Fall 2005 model), will call one A and the other B.
Prior to attempting ram upgrade: A, config working fine: both a config using 1GB slot 1, 256MB slot 2 and a single 1 PC3200 1GB stick. OS X 10.4-10.5.7. No problems. I did have the motherboard replaced under warranty after having sleep problems - capacitors were expanded. No problems since that motherboard swap.
Prior to attempting ram upgrade: B, config working fine: 2 x 256MB sticks. OS X 10.3.9
Ordered 3 PC3200 400Mhz 1GB sticks from Data Memory Systems.
    Upgraded A: Added 1GB stick = 2GB total
Upgraded B: Removed both 256MB sticks from B and added two 1GB sticks = 2GB total
Booted B, experienced gray screen of death with the multi-language crash message - somethign like: 'Please hold down the power button and restart'. Power cycled B, booted off a retail box DVD of OS X 10.5.6. Began upgrade to 10.5.6. Gray screen of death part way thru upgrade. Power cycled, gray screen of death again during early boot phase.
Decided to run tests on B. I could not locate the Apple Hardware Test (neither on system dvd 1 nor on a separate DVD). I resorted to using TechnoTools Deluxe which was included with AppleCare box. No hardware problems found including on the 2GB memory.
Removed both new 1GB sticks, pulled older working 1GB stick from A and installed into B. Completed upgrade with just 1GB memory on B to 10.5.6 and subsequently pulled down all updates for OS X 10.5.8. Powered down, added second 1GB stick to B, booted into 10.5.8 successfully. Repaired disk permissions, restarted. Began using applications, then after only about 5 minutes experienced gray screen of death. Powered down, removed new 1GB stick, replaced with one of the two remaining new 1GB sticks. Read about reseting PRAM/NVRAM. Followed steps to reset PRAM then decided to do the reset NVRAM within openfirmware. Started back up and logged into 10.5.8. Ran several applications - did not experience gray screen of death after about 20 minutes use. Have not had time for further tests on B yet.
Back to my saga with A (my original iMac G5 that was working fine with 1GB stick on 10.5.7):
Called Data Memory Systems and they sent me a replacement for the 'bad' 1GB stick.
While I was waiting for the new 1GB stick from DMS, I was struggling to get machine fully updated. Software Updater was failing with the weird network error (network was fine) and after following steps to troubleshoot, I backed up the user accounts and decided to reinstall OS X fresh from the 10.5.6 retail box (family license). Finally, I had OS X 10.5.8 all fully updated on the 1GB iMac G5 (A).
New memory arrived, installed 2nd 1GB stick. Booted up, immediately I got the gray screen of death. Restarted, booted up got about 5-15 minutes use then gray screen of death. Puzzled, I called DMS who said unlikely I got 2 bad sticks. They suggested I try memtest. So I did...
So on A, I first ran memtest from single user mode on the 2GB config. It crashed immediately with some 'Unexpected' error. Did not look like a memory error. I powered down, removed 2nd 1GB stick, and ran memtest from single user on the 1GB stick. Ran all tests 3x over a couple hours - no problems found. Retested after swapping the 1GB stick for the other. Both tested fine. Installed both sticks again and ran memtest all tests, one pass (didn't want another 6 hours lost) on the 2GB config, and all tests passed. Booted up and got gray screen of death - I don't recall if it was on bootup or after running but I ran fsck with no disk problems found, then restarted, logged in, ran disk utility to repair all permissions. Some repairs were made. Restarted A, reset PRAM and NVRAM again, booted successfully.
I haven't had much time to run extensively apps on A yet. It's sleeping as I type this on another mac. My next test will be to reset SMU.
I'm starting to wonder if the original iMac G5 has firmware problems that would prevent it from being unstable with two 1GB sticks??? My experience on two identical models of iMac G5 plus reading this post with VERY similar behaviors and after all the normal tests. I've concluded the memory is A-OK and something more sinister is lurking...
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

  • 3 beeps with ram upgrade

My Macbook beeps after installing ram upgrade. Doesn't matter what maker. I know that all the specs are right but I keep getting the 3 beeps to indicate the banks are empty, not that it's incompatible RAM type. What do I do now?

When I put the old memory cards back in, it starts but only showing half the RAM. When I switch positions (slots) for the cards, the empty banks also switch positions so that seems to indicate a problem with one of the original cards now also. Am currently the hardware test. Just done in record time, "no trouble found." However, profile is showing only half the RAM actually installed.

  • Problems with RAM Upgrade

    Hi,
I work in a school with 204 slot loading iMacs. They are G3/450 DV machines running OS 9.2.2. They all had 2 65 meg RAM sticks. We took one 64 out and put a 256 meg RAM stick in each. Most of them responded well to the upgrade, but about 40 of them now refuse to start up. We thought it might be the battery so we tried putting a new battery in one of them, but that didn't help. We tried replacing the RAM, but that didn't help either. The only thing that works is putting the original 64 meg RAM stick back in the computer. Can anyone help?
    Sincerely,
    Jim

Check the plug connection on the back of the iMac as well as the wall socket connection. Make sure both are firmly in place.
Except for the keyboard & mouse disconnect all devices from your computer.

  • Battery life reduces to half with RAM upgrade

    HI Folks,
I have a strange case and need expert help.I purchased Macbookpro early 2011 ,15inch with  2z4GB RAM approx 2 months ago.The Battery lasts for approx 4hrs.
Recently I removed the original RAM (2 x 2GB) which were rated at 1333Mhz and replaced them with 2 x 4GB RAM rated at 1066Mhz.The battery life went down from 4hrs to 1hr 50 minutes without using any application, when i swapped the RAM back to original it shoots up back to the normal battery timings (approx 4 hrs)
I am not able to understand wether it is because of lower bus speed RAM.I am using the samsung brand
    regards
    Zubair

    Reset the SMC
    Reset the PRAM
    Calibrate the battery

  • What is the limit with RAM upgrading on a Macbook pro (mid 2011)

I'm looking for a suitable upgrade for my ram, but I don't know if there are models that are incompatible with my Macbook Pro model.
    I have a 13 Macbook Pro 2.7Ghz from mid 2011.
I have a couple of possible RAM models to purchase such as:
    Corsair SO-Dimm 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000,1866MHz
    Kingston 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Are there any limitations regarding the speed I can install on my machine?

Max 16GB's of 1333MHz DDR3 SO-DIMM PC10600 204 Pin is the correct RAM for your computer.

  • Strange issue with RAM upgrade: It works but it doesn't! Please help.

    Hello Everyone,
I have a very strange issue with my iMac since upgrading my RAM from 4 to 12 gig. When I first installed the new RAM it booted up and ran great. The next time I went to boot the iMac up it swtiched on but didn't get as far as the first white boot up screen. I tried turning it off and on a few times using the power on/off button but still no success. I decided to remove the RAM and reseat it. The computer then booted up again fine. Here's the problem though: when I went to switch my iMac on the next day it wouldn't boot up. Again, I took the RAM out and put it back in and the iMac booted up fine. I've checked the status of the RAM in the system profiler and it reports that everything is OK. So, I'm at a loss. Obviously, I don't want to go through this process every time I want to start up my Mac. Any ideas/solutions would be very gratefully received.
    Many thanks in advance.

I completely agree with you. It will be one of the 3 issues you outline. The machine was bought brand new and has never given me a problem. It is just the introduction of the new RAM that has started a problem. However, I did just risk a restart and it booted up fine. I don't know if a restart is any different to shutting down and then pressing the on/off button to start the computer. Maybe my last reseating has done the trick or maybe my thinking is flawed because restarting involves a different process to booting up by pressing the on/off button. I don't know.
In the part of the world I'm sitting in it's night time now so I will leave the diagnostics running and check the results in the morning. I hope the issue is now resolved anyway. This sort of thing takes me back to my dark PC days although in this case I know it's probably not the Mac's fault.
    Thanks again. Very much appreciated.

  • Problem with Ram upgrade

Hi, I have an Imac (27", mid-2011) and I just bought a 4Gb Ram memory to install in one of the free slots, I installed and turn on my computer, the computer recognized the new memory but when I'm going to open a program (and even when I leave the computer alone and I don't do anything) the computer restarts with the next message: "The computer restarts because of a problem". I think that is because the new Ram memory but I don't know what is exactly the problem. This is the report I have:

    1. You have two different brands, Samsung (M471B5673FH0-CH9) and Kingston (99U5469-035.A00LF).
    2. Typically, DIMMs are symmetrically added, 2,2,4,4 or 2,2,2,2 or 4,4,4,4 and each Bank should have matched pairs in size and speed.
If you remove the 4GB memory do your crashes stop?
MACs are very specific about memory.
You can try this, but it may not work.
    BANK 0/DIMM0 - 2GB
    BANK 0/DIMM1 - 2GB
    BANK 1/DIMM0 - 4GB
This is what you have now.

  • Terms that void apple care with RAM upgrade

    Hi,
I want to upgrade the RAM of my macbook to at least 1gb. I have heard some conditions that may void the apple care that I bought. So, I heard that you would have to leave at least one of the original RAM cards in there for the warranty to still be considered good? Is that true? And if that is try is it bad to mix a 1gb RAM card with a 256mb or is there a difference, or is it better to just get 2 512mb? thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The RAM of a MacBook is considered a "user installable part" by Apple. You will not void your warranty by replacing the RAM. However, if you damage something in the course of changing the RAM, the repair will not be covered by the warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan. Here is Apple's article about this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25097
Apple will even give you instructions on how to change the RAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721
Because of the graphics sub-system installed in your MacBook, there is a benefit to using matched pairs of RAM. How much this will impact your user experience will depend on how you use the computer. Personally, I would recommend you keep the RAM in pairs, but others here have had no noticeable problems with unmatched capacities of RAM.

  • Help with RAM upgrade in MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010)

I'm trying to upgrade it to 8Gb. I bought two 4Gb memories from Kingston.
When I put the two new memories, my mac doesn't turn on (actully it does, but it doesn't load).
But if I put either of the new memories with one old ones it works.
    Help!!!!!

    The memory I bought is a 4Gb DDR3 1333 Kingston KVR1333D3S9/4G (PC3-10600 CL9 204)
That's your problem. Your computer is spec'd for 1066 RAM. Return this RAM & get RAM spec'd for your computer.

  • Help with RAM upgrade (K8T Neo Platinum)

    Hey everyone,
It's been a couple of years since I built my system (specs below), and I'm looking to upgrade the RAM.
I'd like to upgrade to 2 or 3 gigs and I'm not sure if I would want to keep my existing modules in place and use the empty slot.
Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks.
    AMD Athlon64 3200+ (Retail)
MSI K8T Neo Platinum BIOS v1.3
    Corsair XMS 3200CL PRO (2x512)
    Leadtek Geforce 6800 GT 256MB
    Creative Audigy 2 Platinum
    NEC 2500A DVD-ROM
    2x 80GB Hitachi SATA (RAID 0)
    Antec TruePower 430
    Antec P160 Case

You can buy a 2 gig kit of the same type that you have if you want to upgrade to 2gig.  There is very little need for more than 2gig of memory, unless you are using it for memory intensive work.
If you get a 2gig dual channel kit, then a future upgrade to a socket 939 means that you won't have to buy memory.

  • G5 Dead? Zpping PRAM, resetting NVRAM and PMU don't work...

First of all sorry, I'm new to this forum and unfamiliar with your etiquette so sorry again if this has been taken care of before.
I own a Power Mac G5 (the first model on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP96 ). It's been running pretty smoothly up with the occasional hang ups, but nothing I wasn't able to take care of myself). Today, after two or three attempts to work on it, the whole system froze and I was forced to shut it down manually. Since then, I haven't been able to get into the OS. Here's what happens:
-The opening chime and fan work as usual, the first couple of times, the computer would sound as if loading, but it would not show anything but a black screen and I am forced to shut down manually, again.
-After resetting PRAM, every time I open it up, it reaches the grey screen with the Apple logo, but after a few seconds of the spinning gear, everything freezes and again, force shut down.
-Looked around all the forums, tried zapping again, tried resetting NVRAM, resetting PMU, did a fsck -fy check up tried to start in Safe mode (nada), tried to boot from disc, can't even reach it. Tried using the option key while loading to get the choices, still nothing.
-I've tried leaving it alone for extended periods of time, nothing...
I'm out of ideas and have a very bad feeling about what this all means... What could the problem be? I haven't installed anything new on the computer which I mostly use for ripping my LPs and to record some of my own music using Ableton Live.
Any hints, clues or help would be greatly appreciated.
PS: I forgot to mention that even though the screen freezes, the computer seems to still sound as if it's working or booting, but nothing else happens and every time I'm forced to quit manually.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. My PowerMac doesn't seem to want to boot from the DVD. Tried it twice and although I'm pressing the right combination of keys, the load keeps going to the grey screen and freezing a few seconds into the radian wheel. The only things I see to be able to do is get into single user mode or open firmware. I tried rebooting from Single User and am getting the following messages (don't know if this will help):
USBF: 20. 99 OHCI driver: OHCIRootHubPortPower bit not sticking (0). Retrying.
and this messages repeats about 30-40 times and then everything freezes.
Once I tried to reboot after doing an fsck -fy and I got a different message before it froze. Can't seem to get it back, but there was something about PACEfamily in my library ("no such file or directory) and another line about a keychain with the wrong username password...
    Any idea!?

  • TS1381 My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).  I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, test all other keys with keyboard view (all others work)  - HELP!!

My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).
I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, & tested all other keys with "keyboard viewer" (all other keys work except for the arrow).
In addition, I have gone thru all the recommended checks with universal access and have booted from snow leopard dvd and the left arrow still does not work.
I have tried using the left arrow key in all of applications I use such as: excel, ms word, address book, calendar, iphoto, terminal, & highlighting an icon and using the arrows to move to another selected icon.
Here is the kicker!  In addition, I purchased a logitech solar bluetooth keyboard and the arrows work fine with my ipad but do not work when paired with the macbook pro. All other keys work fine on the macbook pro using the bluetooth keyboard.
I believe this says that the problem is not in my macbook pro keyboard. So where can it be?
Can anyone think of any other rabbit holes I can search?
    thanks and regards
    vats3

I would also like to add that I've reverted the two cd drive and hard drive mods I did and the laptop is back to factory hardware and there is 0 corrosion or mold visible.

  • No sound after Mountain Lion upgrade - is NVRAM reset safe?

Hi there, I've followed a few posts and tried out all of the offered solutions but, as yet, none have worked for me. I'm wondering - is it safe to do a NVRAM reset (I have a 2011 model 24" iMac)? Bit of a newbie, Mac is only 5 months old and was a PC man the rest of my life......
Everything was working fine then I decided to keep up to date and installed Mountain Lion. Now, output is greyed out in 'sound options' (so I cannot select). I'm getting 'startup' and 'notification' bleeps, but no regular sound (eg via programs, web or Spotify).
Sheesh if I had known this I really wouldn't have bothered with the upgrade.... (my first with a new Mac).
Strangely, also, under 'Purchased' in iTunes I still get the option to 'download' ML, although when I try to do so it correctly then informs me that it is already installed. All my other purchases have 'installed' against them.....
Anyway, the main issue I have is with loss of regular sound and any advice/recommendations would be most gratefully received, thanks in advance, Andrew (Scotland).

Thanks hpr3, tried that..... but it didn't work.
I notice that under 'sound' in system preferences I no longer have an option to select a device for sound output. Under the 'output' tab, 'Headphones' is associated with 'headphone port' but Soundflower (16ch and 2ch) gives no option for an output device (it has, literally, disappeared!).
Presumably if I can get an output device back, I'll get sound back.
I've read elsewhere that an NVRAM reset may fix if all else fails (but reading on from that there are posts as to what to do if your Mac fails to restart after an NVRAM reset) and I'm naturally a bit anxious as to trying this??
