Reset NVRAM while EFI Password enabled

I have a macbook pro (late 2011).
And, I need to reset the NVRAM / SMC.
However, I have my EFI Password enabled.
And, I DO remember my EFI Password (a lot of people in Google is searching how to reset it, anyway) !!!
When I do the following -
     1. Restart
     2. Press & hold CMD+ALT+P+R while booting, it prompts the EFI Pawword
     3. I provide the password
     4. Immediately after entering EFI Password, I press & hold CMD+ALT+P+R
     5. It loads OS X Utilities, does not restart (as explained in Apple's page, the system should restart)
I have reasons to believe that the NVRAM is not reset
By the way I do not want to get rid of EFI password.
Any luck ?

Thanks DS Store.
I meant to say NVRAM (of Intel Macs), not PRAM (PPC Macs).
The first article is good, however, I am able to find little help for my problem.
It covers PRAM, and till OS X 10.5.X. Mine is 10.8.X.
I have browsed Google, and found that I need to visit Apple Care for EFI Password reset (or, use the logic board reset).
Any alternative ? This is bad to forbod someone from resetting NVRAM / SMC if EFI Password is enabled :-(

  • How to reset EFI password ??

i got stuck on efi password . how to reset and can i update my os without efi password ??

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the arrow button below the icon.
From the menubar select Firmware Password from the Utilities menu.
Yes, you can upgrade software without a firmware password, but you do need an admin password for your login account. I think you have these two confused.

  • Reset-nvram, reset-all necessary with RAM upgrade/EFI?

When you upgraded or downgraded ram with the ppc architecture it was always best practice to reset-nvram, reset-all within open firmware. I've gone through apple's documentation and done a little research on the internets and can't find out if this is still necessary.
Since intel macs are using EFI instead of Openfirmware, is this no longer necessary?

Thanks for the reply. Just installed 2gb (2x 1gb transcend sticks)
    So far so good:
1.83ghz, wifi, bt, dashboard widgets off, no apps running
    Xbench @ 512mb = 48.31 on batt, 'normal'
    Xbench @ 512mb = 45.18 on AC, 'best performance'
    Xbench @ 512mb = 60.29 on batt, 'normal'
    Xbench @ 2gb = 59.09 on AC, 'best performance'
Apple System Profiler reports that both transcend sticks are running @667mhz, which was a problem with patriot mem.
The 2x256mb sticks I pulled out were hynix mem: HYMP532S64BP6-Y5 AB, I was surprised. I thought apple used samsung for these macbooks.

My 8310 phone has a lock on the Password Enabled, and I can't clear or change setting to disable password. Also, the security time out is locked, so I can't change the time either. Please help, I want to reset the phone so that it isn't locked and I can disable the security password.

Yes. If you know who's company is was a part of, the BES admistrator can send a default IT policy to device to remove any restrictions from the device. I also found you can try removing the policy yourself. I've never tried this, but here's a link describing how to do so: http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/Remove_IT_Policy

  • Set EFI password on clients from Snow Leopard Server?

    Hi everyone,
I would like to know if there is a way to set up EFI password over my 10.6 clients without use of an installation DVD. I have about 500 clients here and it will become a great loss of time set them one by one booting from DVD.. They are managed by a 10.6 server and soon I'll receive an ARD license.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks very much.
Following your tip I've found that to enable password request the command is
    sudo nvram sucurity-mode=command
    followed by
    sudo nvram security-password=<pass_code>
this sets a chosen password. To know the encoded version of our pass is sufficient use
    nvram security-password
Now i'm looking for a way to reset both theese parameters for a rollback procedure.

  • G5 Dead? Zpping PRAM, resetting NVRAM and PMU don't work...

First of all sorry, I'm new to this forum and unfamiliar with your etiquette so sorry again if this has been taken care of before.
I own a Power Mac G5 (the first model on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP96 ). It's been running pretty smoothly up with the occasional hang ups, but nothing I wasn't able to take care of myself). Today, after two or three attempts to work on it, the whole system froze and I was forced to shut it down manually. Since then, I haven't been able to get into the OS. Here's what happens:
-The opening chime and fan work as usual, the first couple of times, the computer would sound as if loading, but it would not show anything but a black screen and I am forced to shut down manually, again.
-After resetting PRAM, every time I open it up, it reaches the grey screen with the Apple logo, but after a few seconds of the spinning gear, everything freezes and again, force shut down.
-Looked around all the forums, tried zapping again, tried resetting NVRAM, resetting PMU, did a fsck -fy check up tried to start in Safe mode (nada), tried to boot from disc, can't even reach it. Tried using the option key while loading to get the choices, still nothing.
-I've tried leaving it alone for extended periods of time, nothing...
I'm out of ideas and have a very bad feeling about what this all means... What could the problem be? I haven't installed anything new on the computer which I mostly use for ripping my LPs and to record some of my own music using Ableton Live.
Any hints, clues or help would be greatly appreciated.
PS: I forgot to mention that even though the screen freezes, the computer seems to still sound as if it's working or booting, but nothing else happens and every time I'm forced to quit manually.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. My PowerMac doesn't seem to want to boot from the DVD. Tried it twice and although I'm pressing the right combination of keys, the load keeps going to the grey screen and freezing a few seconds into the radian wheel. The only things I see to be able to do is get into single user mode or open firmware. I tried rebooting from Single User and am getting the following messages (don't know if this will help):
USBF: 20. 99 OHCI driver: OHCIRootHubPortPower bit not sticking (0). Retrying.
and this messages repeats about 30-40 times and then everything freezes.
Once I tried to reboot after doing an fsck -fy and I got a different message before it froze. Can't seem to get it back, but there was something about PACEfamily in my library ("no such file or directory) and another line about a keychain with the wrong username password...
    Any idea!?

  • How do i reset my Iphone 4 password without restoring to default?

Recently I've been having problems with my roommates watching me enter my password which forced me to change it periodically.
Only now I can't remember what I changed it to most recently and restoring it to factory settings isn't really an option considering the volume of the content on the device.
I've been without access to my phone for the past week and it's getting almost aggravating having to call and talk to some lady about the issue I'm having, having her sound very empathetic and saying they could "assist me in resolving this today", only to have her say that I'd need to pay $30 just to have her tell me a few words.
I don't have $30 right now and I think it's beyond stupid that they're 'unable to help' me because of this.
In the Backups section of the Apple site I read:
" If you protect your iPhone or iPod touch with a passcode, you will be prompted to enter the passcode when you connect to iTunes. Once you successfully enter the passcode, iTunes will recognize that device as authorized and you will not need your passcode to back up or sync (Which I've done). When restoring from an iOS 4 (or later) backup, if the device had a passcode set, iTunes will ask if you want to set a passcode (and remind you that you had protected your device with a passcode.) iTunes will not ask you to set a passcode when restoring from iOS 3.x and prior backups. "
I've just tried restoring from a backup I created last week but my password is still enabled and I'm still unable to remember what I changed it to.
I'm not sure if I misunderstood the bolded section but I was under the impression that restoring it from iOS 4 or later would remove/reset my current password and allow me to set a new one. That hasn't been the case.
I'm not really sure where to go from here, so any and all help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mjk

  • Using EFI password "full" security isn't working

    Hi,
I'm trying to use the EFI Password Utility to prohibit any attempt to boot my MacBook Pro without the correct password.  I used the utility available on the MacBook Pro's supplied install DVD, and so far have successfully prevented the use of any keystrokes on boot without the correct password (ie. "command" mode).  However, I am unable to set the EFI to prohibit any attempt to boot.
Apple documents in its, "Mac OS X: Security Configuration - For Mac OS X Version 10.6 Snow Leopard" PDF manual that,
You can also configure EFI from the command line by using the nvram tool. […]
You can set the security mode to one of the following values:
Full: This value requires a password to start up or restart your computer. It also requires a password to make changes to EFI.
For example, to set the security-mode to full you would use the following command:
         $ sudo nvram security-mode=full
I applied this setting, but it doesn't appear to be working.  The redacted output of "nvram -x -p" is as follows:

    # Secure startup by setting security-mode. Replace $mode-value with # "command" or "full."
         sudo nvram security-mode="$mode-value"
So, assuming that I may have used the wrong version of the command, and thereby not applied the setting correctly, I deleted the "security-mode" key using:
    sudo nvram -d security-mode
I then re-applied the setting using:
    sudo nvram security-mode=full
because I was confident that, initially, I had used the version with quotes.  However, it's made no difference - booting the machine does not require entry of an EFI password.
Oddly, the EFI still prevents the use of keystrokes (ie. "command" mode), so it's definitely functional; I just can't tell it to use "full" mode.  Also, I note that "security-mode" is the only key to have a "string" child not a "data" child - is this indicative of a problem?
    Any advice?

I've got the same problem as OP but I'm not concerning myself with the physical security of my device--an entirely separate topic altogether.
Essentially, I know that with physical access to a Mac box it's possible to enter single user mode and change the password. I also know there is a way to prevent that ability by changing the default login credentials I just don't remember the phrase of what I'm looking for. I know that I have a pdf on hardening snow leopard which probably has information on how to restrict password changes when in single user mode, but I can't find it.
Here's some stuff that should at least get you started in the right direction:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/fed-talk/2011/Feb/msg00022.html
    Definitely read:
    http://www.nsa.gov/ia/_files/factsheets/macosx_10_6_hardeningtips.pdf
Depending how much time you want to spend on this, there's also a book by Charlie Miller called "Mac Hackers Handbook" that's worth the read--although I have yet to do completely so myself. I did get to see his talk at DefCon 2011 and it was pretty amazing- he developed a technique to essentially make a Mac laptop battery explode from a remote location-- although he never has actually done it for fear of...you know...actually destroying his computer. lol. The next time you hear a MacTard bragging about how OSX is a secure platform, be sure to bring that up. Also distinguish between viruses and malware in general the next time you talk to a genius about mac security- we recently discovered a rootkit on one of the Macs on our network.
Back to the topic--If you're going to go through the effort of securing one aspect of your box, you mind as well keep going with it if you have legitimate reasons to worry about unauthorized access.
Another awesome resource is the Electronic Frontier Foundation:
    https://www.eff.org
    https://ssd.eff.org/risk
They have guides about nearly everything concerning online anonymity and/or security and they're really good about keeping it 'human readable' - ie understandable to the average user. I'll try to find that pdf and upload it if I do. Those other resources should point you in the right direction- if not explicitly answer your question. Let me know if you find anything too . Help me help you.

2 How to get back to getting into my screen, without that first (& superfluous - since only 3 people use it & it's a HOME computer, not a business that needs extra protections) screen?
    Resetting Password
    1. Shut down comp & wait a few minutes.
    2. Turn on & at the same time hold down the “command” & “R” keys.
    3.  Next screen….. In the menu bar click on Utilities (NOT OS X UTILITIES)
    4.  In the drop down menu, click on Terminal.
    5.  In the terminal pop up small window:  Type exactly—> resetpassword
    Hit return key.
    6.  Reset password window will pop up.  Follow the onscreen instructions to reset password.  Make sure you select the admin account to reset the password.
    7.  You can ignore the “keychain” pop up windows, which is what I did.  Does not affect anything.
You can do the keychain stuff at your leisure.
    8.  Quit out of everything & restart your computer.
    9.  Enter your new reset password.
Once you are back on the desktop, you can go into System Preferences>Users & Groups.  Double check to make sure auto login is enabled.
Also, check out the following User Tip:  Reset the user password in OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite

I bought this mac in june 2012
My next step is to go to the Store folks to fix all - Call support messed me up & so far
If you have AppleCare & same is still active, suggest that you call Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-275-2273.  Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations.  Tell them exactly what you stated in your post.
Be sure to tell them that you have an iMac.  Why?  Because, under AppleCare, iMacs qualify for HOME tech repair/support when warranted.  No need to lug an iMac to a repair facility.
    GOOD LUCK!
