  • How Do I Reset Firmware Password on the Intel MacBook Pro

Hello, Sorry to post the message here, but I'm unable to post a message in any other area of the discussion board. All I get is subscribe to forum or Mark all topics as read. Nothing about posting message!
Here is my question. I just bought a new MacBook Pro and want to know how to reset the open firmware password on that model. I know its different on the Power Book G4's.

  • Wifi password not working on MacBook Pro

    Wifi password not working
I got a MacBook Pro today. The previous owner had Apple wipe it clean for the new owner, me. When I first tried putting my wifi password in, I wasn't remembering exactly what it was, so I tried many different possibilities. Since then, I found my password in my office. I put it in, when it asked for it. But, it's not taking it. It just says searching for networks. And, this is after I identified the correct network. So, I am wondering if perhaps after a number of "tries" does it not accept ANY further attempts ? You know like Banking passwords....you get locked out. I'm wondering if I'm locked out?

No, not like a bank timeout.
Open keychain in your Utilities Folder and look for old router password, or delete wrong passwords.
You can always reset your router password to something new that you can remember.

  • Locked out of Macbook Pro w/ Retina

I just bought my Macbook Pro with the Retina screen and I was moving my stuff from my imac to my macbook using Migration Assistant and I clicked continue before the estimate was reached for how much memory everything would take so It went on to move my stuff and then I get a message saying that there wasn't enough space in my Macbook Pro for everything so I went back and deselected my applications and stuff so it could all fit. After that, It asked to register my macbook with my Apple ID and all that stuff so I did that and then after that It went to my logon screen. This screen shows the same picture of me that I made for my account on my iMac so I know that got moved over BUT I tried putting in the same password that I used on my iMac (and every password I've ever made in my entire life) but every time my macbook pro says that it's and incorrect password. So I've looking around the web and i realized that you can simpley fix this on any other computer by reinstalling the software from a disk that comes with your computer but the Macbook Pro with the Retina screen doesn't have an optical drive so I've come to realize that there are only two ways to fix this. Either somehow get around the password (Which is where I need the community's help if it's possible), OR I can Go to the Apple store in the morning because It's midnight right now. I'm also thinking about calling Apple Support and hoping that somebody is awake right now to take my call. I'm asking for the community's help right now to see what my options are. If I can't do anything but go to the apple store in the morning, I'll just wait until then. Thanks for any possible help that I may receive here!

I had this same problem yesterday.  I ended up reinstalling several times.  I was then stuck in a virtual loop where it kept making me add a new account time and time again.  I finally called Apple support and they had me log in via safe mode by holding down the shift key when starting up.  This allowed me to log in.  I am not sure if this helps when it is still just locked out but it might work.  I held down the option key to reinstall the operating system and I waited to import until after sucessfully reinstalling Lion.
I would suggest if you do try erasing the HD and reinstalling Lion it will take a while.  Set up your main account, then, before migrating, create a new account that you will log in to for the migration.  This will allow you to merge the newly created account and the migrated account.  I got locked out again when I did this but I was able to go into the secondary account and change my password back.
Hope this helps you.  I know I was pretty frustrated.

  • Apple ID password not recognized on MacBook Pro

When initially setup, iCloud recognized my Apple ID and PW on my MacBook Pro; now as of today, it registers the password as invalid, so I reset the password using Apple password 'genie': iPhone and iCloud (web) both recognize my (new) password as valid, Apple Support recongizes my password, but iCloud (MacBook Pro) does not.
There seems to be no recourse w/in iCloud to go any further.
    Any Suggestions? other threads?
    TIA

    Hi Laramar,
You may need to change the information on your iPhone:
    iPhone User Guide:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
View and edit your account: Go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores, tap your Apple ID, then tap View Apple ID. You can turn subscribe to iTunes newsletters, and view Apple’s privacy policy. To change your password, tap the Apple ID field.
    Hope this helps!

  • ATA Lock support in MacBook Pro BIOS

Does the MacBook Pro BIOS support ATA Lock? And also what different SATA modes (AHCI, Native, Campatible etc) does the BIOS support?
I am wondering if I can install a Seagate FDE drive in the MacBook Pro I am planning to purchase.
    Saqib
    <Edited by Moderator>

Saqib was asking about how a MAC laptop handles ATAPI 5-6-7 security features that SATA drives support, i.e. disk lock/password commands where the disk itself controls access to the drive and the password is passed from the host to drive in a SATA command payload.
The concept here is that if a perp walks away with your hard drive, and it is password protected, the perp cannot get at the data (short of guessing the password). In the PC world it is common place and this protection is built into Laptop BIOS and even most desktops. The unlocking occurs there prior to any OS being booted (the boot record is not accessible on a locked drive), or given access to the drive if its not the boot drive.
Just about any laptop drive implements these security features. Its not clear to me in the referenced article if the MAC firmware actually uses the ATAPI security lock feature, or the MAC firmware implements some equivalent to a "BIOS" password protection. So if my Mac laptop disk is lost, is the disk password protected?
    Specifically the questions are:
    1) if I were to connect drive with security features enabled and locked to a Mac laptop, would the Mac provide a means to enter the disk password, or does it simple say unrecognized disk?
    2) How do I enable the drive's security features on a Mac Laptop?
I dunno but am interested in the answer.

  • New password I set for macbook pro -cannot login@ all

Can anyone please help- I reset my password- and haven't been able to login in-I am admin.-so no luck using the admin route.
Was away for 2 weeks-and now I cannot even remember that new code I set-which wasn't working.
Is there ANY hope --please help-I'd love to get on my own notebook.
    Using a 2011 17in Macbook Pro
    Thanks so much

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • Caps Lock light on MacBook Pro not working.

The light on my MacBook Pro's Caps Lock does not turn on when I use it. However the Caps Lock feature works fine and I don't remember changing any features that would make this occur. I checked the Modifier Keys under system preferences and all defaults are set. This is a 2010 MacBook Pro with OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7.

It's possible that it's burned out.
I'd try a SMC reset following these instructions:

  • Does anyone know how to reset the fan on a MacBook Pro 13-inch (Late 2011) to it's factory setting speed (Maybe Terminal may help?)

I have a late-2011 13-inch MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite. (Standard configuration).
My problem is that I downloaded a fan control application and it worked perfectly, but it started to get annoying so I deleted it.
Does anyone know how to reset the fan speed back to factory settings (Maybe a command in terminal?)

  • What happen next, after erase and lock screen of macbook pro?

Hi, I just lost my macbook pro and I have some personal data on it. I read some articles who said that Erase mac will delete whole data. When I erased my Macbook pro from Web Interface https://www.icloud.com it ask me to enter 6 digits passcode I entered and It also lock my Macbook pro which I wasn't select explicitly. Now its showing me status "Pending: Erase Mac" and both Erase mac and lock in disable mode.I also checked option "Notify me when found". Now my questions are these.
If user connect to internet, it will erase my whole data and lock the screen, isn't it?
If user connect to internet, It will notify me?
I read somewhere that by choosing erase mac option I am no longer to track my mac, isn't it?
I also read somewhere that by locking screen it ask 4 digits passcode, then why its asked me for 6 digits?
Please let me know about these question's answers. This will be great for me. Thanks.

If user connect to internet, it will erase my whole data and lock the screen, isn't it?
If user connect to internet, It will notify me?
    Yes and yes.
I read somewhere that by choosing erase mac option I am no longer to track my mac, isn't it?
Not 100% sure, sume users have reportedly still be able to track it.
I also read somewhere that by locking screen it ask 4 digits passcode, then why its asked me for 6 digits?
4 digits is for mobile devices.

  • I want to reset all networking on my Macbook Pro with 10.5.6 to fresh start

I installed Log Me In on my Macbook Pro, and now I can't see the other PCs on my network, they don't show in my shared area in Finder, and iTunes is having a hard time to find my music on the network. I tried with both wired and wireless. I uninstalled Log Me In, but it didn't help.
I'd like to reset all the networking to the default fresh start. I think this will help. Does anyone know how I do this?
I have a Linksys wireless router and several PCs on the network, I have never had a problem with networking before with my Mac.

Remove the following if they exist from the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder:
    1. com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    2. preferences.plist
    3. com.apple.smb.server.plist
    Restart the computer.

  • How do I reset the PRAM of my MacBook Pro in OSX Mountain Lion?

Dear all, I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2012, MacBook Pro 9,2) and upgraded the OS to Mountain Lion. There have been some crashes (apparently related do Chrome), so I wanted to reset the PRAM to "clean up" a bit, but it didn't work. I made sure I followed the standard procedure (as in my old MacBook Pro 15" Late 2008, which was stolen), and held properly the CMD+OPT+P+R combination before getting the grey screen. Just to be sure, I tried shutting down and turning on again and also just restarting my Mac. Neither worked. What may be the problem? Thanks.

The fact that Apple saw fit to put out a ML-specific PRAM-reset note confirms that the key sequence is unchanged. Yet I've witnessed quite a few instances of people complaining that it did not work on that OS. Will try when I get on my testbench later tonight. But still seems odd to have such a recurrence of the same complaint.

  • Airport Extreme locks up when Macbook Pro tries to reconnect

After a few minutes of operation my MacBook Pro loses connection with the Airport Extreme. When doing this it locks up the AE base station. This base station works fine with the other mac and windows products that I use with it. This only happens when the MacBook Pro drops connection, or it is dropping connection due to the fact that the MacBook Pro is having problems.
Again, this does not happen if I do not turn on my MacBook Pro. It runs fine weeks at a time. All my products have the latest firmware updates from Apple.

This is a very frequent problem for me that first began more than a year ago. For a while it seemed to settle, but is now a daily affair after my MacBook Pro goes to sleep overnight. It used to respond to a restart, but that is no longer true. My solution is just to retry repeatedly: eventually a connection is made, but it can take several minutes to work. I use WPA security. The recent Airport software update to 5.5.1 made no difference. I have not tried to update to 10.6.3 yet.

  • How do I fix a sticky caps lock button on macbook pro?

I've just purchased a mbp with retina display and love it but the keys are a little sticky and making it difficult to ype well. Specifically the caps lock button. DIs this a common problem and how do I fit it?

What do you mean by sticky. The Caps Lock key on all new Macbook Pros don't work correctly, IMHO. You have to Hold down the C L key for a BIT for it to turn on. There is a long thread on it someplace on this forum.
If other keys are STICKING, you press it and let up and get repeated characters, then you have a defective MBP and since you just bought it take it back and get another that functions correctly. Apple has a 14 day No questions asked return policy. Take advantage of that policy and get a Mac that work right.

  • USB Modem locks up my macbook pro

Just got my new Macbook Pro.
Got the USB modem to use in remote areas.
Can't figure it out but, it totally locks the machine up, like nothing I have had in years. No way to force quit or anything.
It appears to be set up correctly. But, when I click connect, I never hear a dial tone, get the indication that it is connecting but, the computer locks up totally???
Any one have an idea? Is it a bad modem?
BTW, no problems with ethernet or airport connections
    Thanks

    I have not solved it.
I sent a message to Apple and was told in the response that my problem could not be handled on line and that I should call support.
Did that and spent quite a long time on the phone but, really couldn't get much done. My problem is that I live in Mexico and what they wanted me to do was dial a US 800 number with the modem to try to test it. Obviously can't do that so I'm stuck until I get to the US. The guy I spoke with suggested that I call back from the US, but who knows when that will be. He also suggested the genius bar at an Apple store.
So, I guess I'll try that. I'll be in Tokyo in early/mid April and will try that if I don't figure out anything before.
If you live in the US maybe you could get to a genius bar or call and do the 800 number bit and report back on what you find out.
In my discussions with tech support, they felt that it was most likely a bad modem but, no way to tell for sure.
Let me know if you are able to test yours out.
    Thanks
