Reset password using install disc

I haven't used my iMac for years and now want to pass it on to my son.
I don't remember my administrator password. When I start up using the install disc and go to Reset Password only the install disc is displayed.
What do I need to do to get the hard drive Macintosh HD to display so that I can reset my password on it?
Thanks. Jay.

There are situations where that utility will not work, such as if there more than on admin account or if the current admin account is NOT the original admin account.  Also, it may not work if the currently installed Mac OS X system is not the version on that installation disc.
Wouldn't it be better if you just use that install disc to run Disk Utility, erase the internal drive, and installed a fresh system?

  • Need to reset password, lost install disc

    I have a wireless router, Model WRT54GS v7.  I moved recently, and I need to reset the password to connect wirelessly.  I've lost the install discs during my move.  What do I need to do?

    The reason why the admin is no longer working as the router password because you might have setup a router password, not knowing, during the first time you setup your router...If you remember the router password when you first used your setup cd to install your router then enter that password else you need to reset your router and re-configure it...
    To reset the router press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

    If your Internet Service Providor is DSL follow this link
    Then adjust the Wireless Settings as suggested in the previous post...

  • Can't login even after resetting password using install disk

    I have been unable to login in using the password on this computer. Twice now I have reset the password using the install disk that came with the computer. After resetting. I quit the installer and then reboot using the computer's startup disk. When I try to login with the new password, it won't let me uses the password even though the new hint is correct. How can I solve this?

    I think you have two choices...
    Reset OS X Password Without an OS X CD...
    http://theappleblog.com/2008/06/22/reset-os-x-password-without-an-os-x-cd/
    It'll boot like a newly setup Mac, but all your stuff should still be there once filling out the stuff.
    Or, an Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
    Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
    But first...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes. (May or may not work)

  • Forgot name/password and install disc does not allow me to reset it

    I forgot the Name and Password I set up to log into my imac. It is an older imac, from 2006 and I can't remember which version operating system. I have tried to use the install disc to reset the password, but it does not allow me to do so. Is there a way to reset the name and password without the install disc? For as long as I can remember whenever I would turn on my mac there would be an image that I had chosen and then a field to enter password. Just recently I turned on my mac and the image or avatar was no longer coming up and it asked for Name and Password. I have tried every combination I can think of and nothing works. I have tried to reset using my install disc, but it says that I do not have a password to reset.

    Before giving up try the following technique to determine the user account names, and reset their passwords if necessary.
    1. Shut down your Mac and turn it back on while holding down the ⌘ and S keys at the same time until your see a black screen with white text. This is known as Single User mode.
    2. You can skip the following step, but it is recommended that you do not because it will check your boot volume for errors and correct what it can:
    At the :/ root# prompt, type fsck -fy and press Return or Enter. It will take a few moments to complete. If you are concerned that nothing is happening just press the Return key until you see the :/ root# prompt again. Once the file system check is complete and the prompt returns, type mount -uw / and press Return / Enter.
    3. Type the following
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist
    and press Enter. If you get an error message you may ignore it.
    4. Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are. You can skip the next step if you found the user name you recall and know its password.
    5. Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password while replacing username with one of the users displayed in the previous step and replacing Password with the new password of your choice. Press Enter. You may get an error message about a file or directory not being found. You may ignore this.
    6. Type reboot and press Enter.

  • Resetting admin password with install disc

    Hi. I am using 10.4.7. I do not know the admin password - the computer belonged to a deceased relative. I want to change the password so I can install programs etc. I have the install disc, but when I click on the Install icon in order to change the password, it asks me for my admin password.
    I have looked at several topics about this and have not seen this problem addressed. Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am not used to Macs! Thanks.

    Hi mluthin, and a warm welcome to the forums & Macs!
    Boot up while holding the Option key down until you see the boot manager, do you see this...
    Firmware password protection in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
    It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMDOption+pr, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
    Finally which exact model of Mac is this?

  • Forgot admin. password, using install disk- STILL CAN'T RESTART IT :[

    I'm so frustrated.
    I forgot my administrator password, so I read up that I use my Mac OS X Install Disc 1
    At first, I wasn't able to restart it because it said I needed a password, so then I did manual restart while holding the C key and that worked...
    Then I clicked on utilities and selected the only user option typed in my new password... and then a screen popped up that it cannot restart my password because I'm denied permission or it failed due to a general error.
    What the heck? How am I supposed to change my password, its getting really frustrating because I haven't been able to update anything for about 2 months.

    Just to make sure that "general error" isn't due to disk problems, once you have booted up from the Install DVD and before you try changing the password, go to Disk Utilities in the same Utilities menu and do a Repair Disk on your regular startup volume. Redo if any errors appear, until it comes out clean. Then, do a Repair Permissions, which needs to be done only once. With that out of the way, retry changing the password.

  • Can I use install discs (Snow Leopard) from MBPro to upgrade desktop?

    I'm having issues with my iMac (mid 2007) which has been upgraded to Leopard so far (when Leopard came out). I have Snow Leopard discs that came with my Mac Book Pro. If I do a clean install of my iMac, can I use the Snow Leopard discs to do the new install? What worries me is that the discs specifically say "13 inch MacBook Pro" Mac OSX Install DVD. Does this mean I can't use them on my desktop? Are their install discs specifically for laptops vs desktops?

    You can not use the disks intended for the MBP on your iMac. Buy a retail copy of SL ($29) or contact Apple for a replacement of the original disks for the iMac.

    I tried to reset my password using apple Id method, but the password I typed is incorrect. HELP HELP HELP

    Hi Davehov,
    What iOS is the phone running? If it is iOS 7, then as ramzee209 indicated, you must contact the seller to get any further.
    If it is running an earlier iOS, you can hook it up to the computer where you iTunes library is located, and restore it:
    Place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
    Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
    While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
    iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
    Cheers,

  • Reset password using opss code

    Hi ,
    I am trying to reset a user password in OID using the opss code. The code I am using is pasted below.
    user = oidStore.searchUser(userId);
    if (user != null) {
    oracle.security.idm.UserProfile userProfile = user.getUserProfile();
    PropertySet set = userProfile.getAllUserProperties();
    List passwordValues = userProfile.getProperty("userpassword").getValues();
    ModProperty prop =
    new ModProperty("PASSWORD", passwordValues.get(0), ModProperty.REMOVE);
    userProfile.setProperty(prop);
    String randomPassword = getRandomPassword();
    userProfile.setPassword(null, randomPassword.toCharArray());
    I got this code from a blog , but there is no such property as "userpassword" I get a null pointer in this line - userProfile.getProperty("userpassword").getValues();
    So any idea on how to reset password from OPSS code for any user?

    Which target are you using this is for direct integration with OID, are you using OIM if so why don't you use the direct api method for resetpassword ? if not check the attribute name for password attribute in OID and place it in the code.

  • Re: using install discs on g5 to update g4

    Hello,
    I have just purchased a new intel macbook 2ghz. I love it. It came with install discs for 10.4.7
    Is is possible to take my old g4 which runs an older version os 10 and update it to 10.4.7 with these discs or does apple put some kind of protection on their install discs for this reason. Thanks in advance.
    M

    First,install disks are machine specific.
    Second,Those disks are from an Intel machine not a PPC machine
    Third,installing a single copy of OS X on two machines at the same time is piracy.

  • How to reset password without install CD

    I don't remember my admin password and I do not have the install CD, is there a way to reset it?

    You can give this a try:
    How to change your username and/or password from the Terminal
    1. Boot into single-user or verbose mode
    2. At the prompt enter the following commands.  Press RETURN after each:
    fsck -fy
    mount -uw /
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
    dscl . -passwd /Users/username password
         Replace username with the targeted user and password with the desired password.
    Reboot
    This allows you to reset the password in single user mode without booting from the install media.  The above tip is attributed to Satcomer.

  • Reset password using Facebook

    Help! I have been using the desktop client for quite awhile now, but cannot log in using my smartphone. Every time I try, it tells me my password is wrong. As an alternative, it asks me to use my Facebook account. I haven't tried it because it prompts me to CHANGE my Facebook password.
    Finally, I got tired of month after month trying to log into Skype using my smartphone and failing, so I tried the Facebook option. I changed my Facebook password (didn't want to) successfully, and went back to the Skype app and tried to log in using the new password. Didn't work.
    What am I doing wrong? Sigh.

  • IMac won't start without install disc

    Hi, I'm new to all of this. I tried resetting my admin password using install disc on my iMac as I'd forgotten it. Now iMac won't start without disc. If disc is ejected on restart apple logo flashes between no entry sign and folder with "?" on it. Will start up with install disc in, but then wants me to choose language and install OS. Tried repairing and verifying HD and all seems ok. Tried holding option key and selecting HD on startup, but same outcome - choose language and install OS. How do I get back to normal desk top? Do I have to install OS again? Will I lose data? Please, please help! Thanks.

    It should only take a minute or so at most to boot from the DVD.
    If your sure you have the correct Install Disk for that iMac, I'd start over. Then if it still doesn't work then perhaps a trip to your Local Apple Service Provider with the Disk or Disk and iMac is in order.

  • Used "Reset Password", now "No available users"

    I started up an old G4 running OS X Server 10.4.1 but couldn't remember the user or password. I put in an Install Disc, ran "Reset Password" from the disc, changed the password for our "Admin" user (not the System/Room user), hit "Save", Quit and restarted the computer.
    The new password wouldn't take.
    I put in the Install Disc again, ran "Reset Password" again but now my volume indicates that there are "No available users".
    Can anyone help me out?
    A million thanks in advance.
