Reset PMU - erase RAM?

My trackpad is jumpy/unresponsive--I'm going to try resetting my PMU, but I noticed from Apple's PMU page the following warning:
Warning: Resetting the Power Manager on any PowerBook or iBook will permanently remove a RAM disk, if present, and all of its contents.
What is a RAM disk? I installed extra RAM (512MB) when I got my iBook. Should I remove this chip before doing the PMU?
Thanks!

Hi sibol,
Welcome to the Discussions.
A RAM disk is RAM that has be set aside to act just like a hard drive. You can load an application in it for an increase in speed. OS X doesn't have the ability to create a RAM disk. You'd need to run OS 9 or lower to do so. Reset the PMU, you won't lose any data.

  • Does resetting PMU erase files on hard drive?

    My wife dumped a bud light on my ibook G4. After drying it out, it appears that the system is functioning (software programs still work), but the display is very dim....almost too dim to read.
    I saw someone recommended resetting the PMU, since it controls the display backlight. But Apple noted "Warning: Resetting the Power Manager on any PowerBook or iBook will permanently remove a RAM disk, if present, and all of its contents."
    Is this going to erase my saved hard drive files?
    Also, my date/time settings reverted to 1969. Does this diagnose the problem I now have? Anyone have solutions on what will need to be done/replaced to clear my display of its beer hangover?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hopefully you unplugged the iBook and removed the battery and turned the iBook over and let it dry thoroughly before powering it up again.
    If you removed the battery, that is why your date reset. You just need to go to System Preferences>Date and Time and reset the date and time. This will always happen if the battery is out for a while. If it is out only very briefly, there is a capacitor that might remember the date and time for a very short time.
    Did the Bud Lite land on the keyboard? If so, the keyboard could have been damaged. Go to System Preferences>International>Input Menu and check the box that has "Keyboard Viewer". This will install a little flag in your menu bar that you can click on and show the keyboard viewer. As you activate a key, it will be highlighted in the viewer. If it is not, then the key isn't working. If the F1 and F2 keys are not working, they won't dim or brighten the display. I believe there is a very tedious way to clean the keyboard, but replacement might be a better option. Please post back if you have keyboard problems.
    As for the RAM disk, I believe that this does not refer to the hard drive, but rather to a separate disk, but I hope that someone who knows what it is for sure will post a clear explanation. But it would certainly be a good idea to back up your files anyway since the beer spill could cause more problems in the future. I believe it would be safe to reset the PMU, but t wouldn't hurt to wait for a knowledgeable posting on what the RAM disk actually is so that you will know whether or not you have one present.
    One thing you could do is to find the original gray discs that came with your machine and run the Apple Hardware Test. If you have Applecare or have had it, there is a disc called Tech Tool Delux that also tests the hardware. You could run that too. If you get an error code, it would indicate a hardware problem.
    How much beer actually got into the computer? If very little and you were able to keep it from going inside, you may have nothing worse than a damaged keyboard. Please post back with more details of the spill, as that might indicate what steps you should take to be sure that there is no further damage.
    Good luck!

  • Resetting PMU, PRAM, etc when installing new RAM?

    Dear Forum,
    I've just ordered Kingston DDR SDRAM - KTA-G5400/2G 2GB PC3200 Kit - for my G5 Dual. My machine has 8 slots. This new RAM will occupy slots 4 and 5. I've checked that this is definitely the correct RAM for my machine.
    I've read what Samara and Japamac have to say about resetting PMU,PRAM, and NVRAM.
    Can you elaborate on this please? Where is the reset button located for my G5 Dual Processor? Is the reset performed before or after the installation of new RAM? The .pdf RAM installation manual (downloaded from this forum)does not mention any necessity to perform a reset, and does not identify the location of any button either?

    Go to System Preference control panel Startup Disk and set it.
    I'd use Option key to look for your boot drive first time anyway.

  • Blue screen, reset pmu, booted up, now no cursor

    hello all...i have received a ibook g4 with some issues. i rebooted it, terminal blue screen, decided to reset pmu, came up after power up, and now no cursor. i tried to plug in a mouse. still nothing! any ideas? just trying to get the ibook back up to get the hard drive emptied off. thanks in advance.

    Hi.
    Two things to try for starters:
    First , try a Starting up in Safe Mode
    Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup
    What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode.
    Then re-boot normally.
    If the above doesn't fix things so that you can "...get the ibook back up to get the hard drive emptied off" try booting into Target Disk Mode by holding the 'T' key down at start-up and connect it to your Pro with a firewire cable. The iBook's HD should show on the Pro. Run DU from the Pro to erase the iBook's HD. Use the zero out option (once will be enough) to map out any bad blocks. If you are re-installing you can run the install from the Pro too while the iBook is still in TDM.
    Have fun,

  • I reset and erased my iphone 4 and now I can`t reinstall it! After I choose a language, region. and wifi, it says Please, try again later or contact customer care

    I reset and erased my iphone 4 and now I can`t reinstall it! After I choose a language, region. and wifi, it says Please, try again later or contact customer care. I tried to do with iTunes, and iTunes even sees this iphone, but it`s like blank, there is nothing I can do in iTunes. It uploaded last software for this iPhone 4, but when it tries to do the reserve copy of iphone first, it shows a mistake. And ask to disconnect and connect the device again, which, obviously, doesn`t help.

    This usually happens if the phone has been Hacked / Jailbroken / Modified...
    Is this the case...?

  • How to Reset or Erase content on iPod....I am selling mine...

    Now that I have a video iPod, I don't need the original Classic version anymore. A co-worker would like to buy it from me. However I noticed that I still have contacts and other personal info in there along with over 1,000 songs. What is the procedure to do a RESET or ERASE all the content so he can start fresh?

    Thanks Neil.
    Everything in that article makes sense but I have one more question about the end of the process. It mentioned that after Stage 2 Restore was completed, it would ask you to rename your iPod, etc like it did when you first bought it brand new. If I plan to sell mine, do I name it anyway?
    By me restoring this older iPod will it affect my newer video iPod when I go to hook it up to the same computer?

  • How do i reset and erase all content settings when i dont know my restriction password

    How do I reset and erase all content without knowing a restriction passcode

    You can't. You have to get into settings in order to erase all content and settings. You have to restore the devics using iTunes and you have to restore as new or if you restore the backup, you will just be restoring the restrictions code that you can't remember.
    Do not backup the iPad since you will not be able to use it.

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • ISight camera can't be recognized. Do I have to reset PMU?

    Can anyone help me...?

    nieyihemu wrote: ... iSight camera can't be recognized. Do I have to reset PMU?
    Perhaps.
    •  If you have not already done so, restart Mac and
        try again.  If the iSight still does not work, continue.
    • If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
       suggestions do not help you, (be certain that you
       use the correct PMU/SMC "reset" procedure for your
       Mac model), yours may be a hardware problem
       that will require a professional fix.
    • Test more than one Apple app in more than one
       user account.  If the problem persists with all,
       Unless you have a current backup, make one now.
      Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
    "... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
    • If you want to try one more thing on your own first,
      use Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then
      download and apply the latest Combo Update for
      your OS.  Currently, the latest SL Combo is here:
        http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
       that completes the Combo update.
    Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable parts of iSight so see your AASP if the Troubleshooting suggestions don't work.

  • I NEED TO RESET PMU & RESET PRAM...HOW??

    hello all...i was on the phone with applecare and i was told i have to reset pmu and rest pram...somehow last night i lost safari, deleted it, and tryed to download again and when i tryed it said "you can not install safari 1.2 on this volume. This system can not use this software"...i am new to apple so i have no idea what i'm doing..anyones help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    thanks!

    Hi,
    Safari 1.2 is for OS X 10.3 (the previous version of the operating system according to your profile). If you are using 10.4.2, try installing the 10.4.2 combo update which should re-update your Safari to the correct version.

  • Reset PMU Xserve

    Got an XServe intel version. Trying to reset the PMU as the fans have gone crazy. Had an engineer look at it, given the all clear but the instructions we've found are not at all clear and don't actually make sense.
    *+1. In order to enter the headless command mode, hold the identifier button while you power the Xserve on.+*
    *+2. Keep pressing the identifier until you see the top row of blue lights on the Xserve blinking.+*
    *+3. Stop pressing the identifier button. You'll notice that the right-most blue LED on the bottom row is lit up - this indicates that the system will start from the system disk.+*
    *+4. At this point you can press the system identifier button in order to cycle through the boot options. They are as follows (right to left)+*
    *+- System Disk+*
    *+- Network Boot+*
    *+- Start from leftmost drive+*
    *+- Boot next disk (other than startup disk)+*
    *+- Target Boot Mode+*
    *+- Reset PMU+*
    *+5. Release the button once again and the system will boot into your desired mode.+*
    We can get it to the 4th step and light up the PMU reset light but we would have already released the button to select that option! It then just sists there and doesn't reboot. If you power down and restart it starts normally again!
    Any ideas? (Can't reset on MB as we can't access the server without serious surgery in the cabinet, it's not on rails)
    Thanks.

    Hey Ken,
    If you are looking to reset the pram or nvram you can do so with sever monitor on a remote machine.
    In server monitor you can click on the restart button and then select "on the next restart" Reset NVRAM and then select the first bootable drive.
    It sounds more the like the system management controller is what you are looking for though as it controls the fans.

  • Reset PMU worked.... but....

    The screen has darkened again. I will try resetting PMU again, however, I am concerned that at some point this won't work.
    How do I determine the cause of my monitor going dark (hard drive is running but monitor remains dark)? This computer suits our needs just fine, so I'd like to keep it going as long as possible.
    If fixing is cost-prohibitive, can we hook it up to an external monitor?

    Unfortunately the troubleshooting in the Apple Service Manual is basically willy-nilly board changing until it works. I don't even think Apple is sure what the cause is and I believe the problems and expense of fixing was a driving factor for the iMac G5 not having such a complex neck arrangement.
    You can connect an external display.
    For a 700/800MHz iMac you can connect a VGA display of either 1024x768 (15" iMac G4 models) or 1440x900 (17" iMac G4 models) other resolution displays are not recommended as Apple crippled the video card.
    For a 1GHz, 1.25GHz iMac you can connect either a VGA display or any video device (like a TV) via S-Video or Composite Video. Again 15" iMacs should have 1024x768 external display, 17" iMac G4s a 1440x900 external display or 20" iMac G4s a 1680x1050 external display.
    There is a hack to remove Apple's deliberate crippling of the graphics, but it is risky (although I've never heard of a failure). This would allow an external display of pretty much any resolution up to about 23"/24" models.

    Does it work okay with a USB mouse?
    Will it start up from the Panther Install CD by putting the Install CD into the tray and holding down the c key at the end of the startup chime? If so, then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
    Once you have repaired the hard drive with the Install disc's Disk Utility, then try to start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
