Reset pram & nvram now my imac is slow.

Hello,
I decided to reset my pram because the disk startup preference pane wont recognise my windows drive but i could boot into windows from my firmware. I read on the internet that resetting the pram might fix it.
After i reset my pram my computer took a long time to boot. then it came up with a folder with a " ? " in it. so i booted from my os 10.6 install disk and ran the disk utility thinking my harddrive might be faulty. it didn't find any errors. When it booted it also made the bong sound but at max volume.
I left it for a while and it eventually booted into osx but every time i typed in a letter it would lockup with a beach ball for 5 mins. ounce i logged in and my computer was running for a while it started to run close the normal speed.
I was wondering if there was a way to restore/reinstall the firmware?
could someone please explain to me in layman's terms what resetting the pram & nvram actually does?
i hope im not missing any details. Im looking forward to getting finding a solution. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your help.
I my internal harddrive as the boot drive but it booted of my backup drive.
It doesn't seem like anything is being written to my firmware. I muter the volume but the startup sound was still at max.
When i booted back to the internal harddrive it had the same problem. The problem doesnt occur on the external drive. so it might be my harddrive. Do you know any good tools for checking my harddrive?
but the problem only started when i reset my pram.

Help with fixing my firewire800 on imac 27".  resetting pram &nvram did not fix.  what else can i do ?

    Slower doing what?
You have an older Mac that really wasn't built to run Lion as fast as it ran older versions of OS X. Although it will run Lion, Lion will be slower even with a RAM upgrade. You did not upgrade the CPU to a faster model, which you CAN'T, and Lion uses more resources then older OS X versions like Snow Leopard.
    So you have 2 options.
    1) Stick with Lion and accept the slower computer.
    2) Wipe the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard and then use your time machine backup to load all you program and files back on the system.

  • No Video - Ran Diagnostics everything passed - reset PRAM, NVRAM  etc.

    Hello,
My cousin's Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 out of a sudden does not boot any more.
You just see the apple logo and that is it.
When I turn it on, you hear the booting chime sound and the fans spin, no LED activity at all.
I tried reseting the PRAM, NVRAM that did not do much.
I ran the diagnostics CD and that passed all the test successfully logic board, mass storage, memory, and video ram. Airport I don't have and the network cable was unpluged.
I tried hiting the install new system icon when I booted in the diagnostic mode, I had to put a paper clip in there for the cdtray to open, and I only saw the same old mac logo.
What do you guys think it is. I was suspecting a mother board, video card, or memory, but all of those obviously passed the test and the video card worked.
What else could be wrong for the computer to not respond at all.
    Thanks in advance,
    Erion
    Power Mac G5

Thanks for the quick answer first of all.
Yeah, it does not boot at all by itself.
I had to use a paper clip and manually open the CD tray to put in Disk One which includes the Diagnostics software. I restarted the computer and held "Option" a couple options showed up
    - Boot from hardive
    - Install the OS
    - Run diagnnostics
The first couple result to the same final stage - a gray scree n with the mac logo in the center.
I ran diagnostics a couple times, both quick and advanced modes and it passed them all:
    Logic Board - Passed
    Mass Storage - Passed
    Memory - Passed
    Video Ram - Passed
I just burned a copy of Ubuntu's PPC version so will try if it boots from it. If it did that will tell me that the Memory is really ok or not.
It is not a Power supply problem because obviously it ran the diagnostics CD. It is also not a video card because I saw displays in the diagnostics mode.
No idea what this is and I am kind of hesitant going and spending money in the dark. If the Live Ubuntu CD boots, than I will probably buy a Serial ATA hardrive to se if that will work, or better I should make it some sort of external so that I can use it even if this does not succeed.

  • Reset PRAM/SRAM, now won't open

Aloha all, had a bad ram issue and got that fixed easily, but had to reset PRAM on a G5 (early 2005), After rebooting FC won't open at all. • I have an ibook g4 that boots to blue screen and hangs. Safe mode will boot but hangs after log in. I have reset PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU. Booted from Diskwarrior and rebuilt and tested the HD, working properly.  Boot from Tiger dvd shows images? no text

The tiger install dvd boots only to show an image of what looks to be two steps, not sure what its showing me.. possibly inserting RAM?  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Could you get a picture of the screen, load that into your working computer,
and post it into a reply here? There are a few kinds of situations where a
similiar display of that sort may appear.
Given the G4 iBook PPC (which model) is a bit dated now, one has to
assume you have the original 'install-restore' DVD it came with, new.
What was or wasn't it doing, before you chose to try to boot Tiger DVD?
Do you have a second Mac, one w/ FireWire ports; maybe Thunderbolt?
It may be possible to further look into the ailing iBook G4 via FireWire
from a second Mac, and attempt to investigate, or save old data to some
external drive, USB Flash; in case you need to totally wipe the HDD.
An image of the iBook screen may be helpful. Someone else with recent
troubleshooting or extensive use of iBook portables (or other OS X issue)
that presents such a screen instead of a normal progress screen, may
have an immediate idea. Without an image, I am not venturing a guess.
What key did you hold down while trying to boot the computer from DVD?
One set of keys can get you a Startup Manager. Among other options.

  • My iMac was running BitDefendwr scan and I tried logging into my online banking at the same time...it froze I had to do a hard restart now it is so slow it is useless. I have Safari5 an latest Snow Leopard. Anybody have any ideas?

My IMac is so slow after having to do a hard restart. I have BitDefender 2011 for Mac and it was running a scan when I tried logging into my online banking. At the same time, I accidentally hit "update" on the Bitdefender icon to update the latest virus and malware definitions. Now my iMac is slow and useless. I have iOS5 and the latest Snow Leopard. Help please!

Before we get too far, please clarify this part:
    I have a 2009 iMac 4,1
A 2009 iMac cannot be an iMac 4,1; they are 9,1 and higher. Did you mean to type "2006?" That would be an iMac 4,1. We need to pin down the model issue before proceeding.
It could be the drive, not the disk, that is dirty. Try a drive cleaning disk, usually about US$5-15 at home entertainment, electronics stores and office superstores

I had to restart by resetting the NVRAM/PRAM.  Now I have a window showing OS X Utilities.  My options are restore from Time Machine Backup (which I could do), Disk Utility to repair or erase, get help online or reinstall OS X.  What should I do?  The problem began when I tried to restart my computer and the only thing I saw was the grey screen, Apple logo, and the timer; the computer wouldn't restart from there.

I searched through trouble shooting options on the Apple Support page and was able to make it this far.

  • Hello!  I have an iMac that I lose the audio output for certain profiles.  The audio output will work on one profile, but when switching to another profile, I lose the audio output.  I've reset the NVRAM/PRAM and that hasn't solved the problem.  Help!

    Hello!
I have an iMac (running iOS 10.6.8, not upgraded to Lion) that I'm having audio issues with.  I have 5 profiles on this machine.  The audio output will work fine out of one profile, then when switched to another, the profile will not have any audio output at all.  Rebooting the machine will occasionally solve the problem.  Administrator permissions are not the issue since this has also manifested itself on the administrator profile. I've also reset the NVRAM/PRAM and that hasn't helped.  All my software is up to date and I recently upgraded the RAM to 2x2GB sticks.  This problem was existing prior to the RAM upgrade.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Tony,
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • IMac screen is black, Resetting PRAM and NVRAM did not solve

    Hi
My iMac screen just went black. I tried
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM and the SMC but it didn't help.
The computer starts up and shows the gray screen, but within a second it just turns black.
    I need help please!
    Thanks

You can try to reset the SMC by unplugging the power cord from the back of the iMac for 1 minute. You can also try to start up to the install DVD by holding command+C on startup with the disc in the iMac. If it does the same thing after the SMC reset and when you try to start up to the install DVD I would take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for hardware tests.

  • Can I reset PRAM or NVRAM in a MacPro?

    Hi all,
I'm on my second MacPro - Apple changed out the last one because of fan & bluetooth issues - and since the latest 10.4.8 update my fan is a bit louder than before so I thought I'd try the above as it worked on G5 machines. I know this has EFI or something wich is different to the G5s so any ideas?
Also, where is the SMU reset button; is it the one in the RAM bay above the higher board or is there another?
I'd like to add, this machine is giving a constant Airport connection of 3mb - 4mb + [on a 4.5mb link] whereas my previous one was lucky to give me 500k so it looks like the wires are being connected properly now?
Thanks in advance to all :0)
    B

Yes you can reset PRAM and NVRAM…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
… in a Mac Pro just like any other Mac.
As for the SMC reset button. Apparently it's placed…
"Press the SMC_RST switch that is located slightly below and to the right of the row of diagnostic LEDs. Use a non-metallic, non-conductive object, such as a wooden pencil."

  • HT1379 Holding down cmd-option-p-r opens utilities instead of resetting pram on iMac. Can anyone help?

    Hi!
As seen on  another discussion I am not the only one that experiences slower inter tenet after upgraded to Lion. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3228040?start=0&tstart=0
Some suggested that resetting PRAM is the solution, so following the apple support instructions http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 I tried to hold cmd-option-P-R keys while starting my iMac. This should just reset the PRAM and restart the computer. Instead, it opens Mac OSX Utilities, so I have to say that promblem(s) not solved....
    Could anyone help?
    Thanks!

As X423424X said you need to hold them down during/after the boot chime/startup sound. Chances are you've got a wireless keyboard, the Bluetooth module on the iMac activates only after/during the chime.

  • I reset PRAM and NVRAM and PMU screen on ibook dark can't see

Hello. My g3 ibook screen was changing from darker to okay. I read the forums about reseting pram and nvram and pmu. So, I reset the PRAM and NVRAM, scren went completely dark. It still would chime and boot up. Witha flashlight you could see desktop. So, I reset PMU, now no chime and still desktop is dark. What happened? I don't have a cable yet to hook it up to an external monitor. I ordered one on eBay, should have this week. What did I do to the ibook? More importantly what can I do to make it work again.

Does adjusting the angle of the display make a difference? (A little forward or a little back?)
Here is the link to Apple's Knowledge Base article on troubleshooting portables that won't turn on or start up:

    Maybe something there will help.

  • I recently purchased an iMac from a friend who factory reset it, and now I can't reinstall Mountain Lion?

As the title says, I can't reinstall Mountain Lion. When I turn on the iMac, it send me straight to OX X Utilities. When I click on Reinstall Mountain Lion, it asks for my ID, but then states I did not purchase Mountain Lion. How do I fix this issue? I've tried asking Apple Support, but to no avail. I don't think the guy I spoke with understood what was going on.
I cannot get around OS X Utilities. There are only four options for me.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion
Back Up (tried, nothing comes up)
Get Help Online (which is what I'm doing here)
Erase or Restore Utilities (I've checked this, it says my disks are not malfunctioning)
My friend suggested signing into his ID to reinstall but when we did, it also said this ID has not purchased Mountain Lion. We logged into Apple Support went to registed devices and there was nothing there. I think he may have used another ID which is he searching for the info for. If we get the right ID, then maybe it will let us sign in on his name and reinstall Mountain Lion. But if he can't, or Apple won't take his ID, then I'm at a loss for options.
So now I'm here, hoping someone else who bought a used iMac from a friend who factory reset it and needs info on how to reinstall Mountain Lion can help me. I don't know what else to do. If I can't get this thing sorted out, I'll have to drive to the apple store. The closest one is 60 miles away, so I'm not looking forward to that. Is that my only option now? What can I do?
tl;dr I bought a used iMac from a friend who factory reset it, and now I don't know how to reinstall Mountain Lion. What are my options?

If the system didn't ship with Mountain Lion originally and you didn't purchase Mountain Lion yourself, then you will need to purchase. A purchase by the system's original owner cannot be transferred to you.
Unless you have another system on which you have purchased Mountain Lion, you will need to first install Mac OS X 10.6.8 on the iMac, for which you'll need either the original installation disks, if the iMac came with 10.6, or a retail copy of 10.6. Install 10.6 and upgrade to at least 10.6.6, and then you can buy Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store, presuming of course that the imac can support Mountain Lion. See:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/

  • Reset PRAM, now boot resolution is wrong?

I was having a weird graphics issue and one step I took in troubleshooting, as told to do by Apple over the phone, was reset the PRAM. Now every time I boot the Mac Pro, the white and grey apple screen is stretched and looks to be around 800x600 while my monitor resolution is 1920x1200. Once it reaches the login screen, everything looks fine again, it's just the main boot screen with the apple log and little spinner icon. I know it was resetting the PRAM that caused this but how I can get my resolution back to normal? The resolution looked fine before resetting PRAM. Thanks.

Just a wild shot but reset PRAM again and then reset nv-ram.
