Reset range expander on WRT300N router without losing security on network

Frequently I get a red blinking light on my range expander.  It won't reset until I unplug and then reset my router.  When I do this, of course, I lose the security settings on my network.  Any suggestions on resetting the range expander without going through all this mess?  I'm new to networking and know virtually nothing about security PLUS I'm disabled so resetting it all is an enormous pain if there's a better way.  The red blinking light usually comes on when the router or range expander has been moved when I'm cleaning.
Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I am not representing Linksys. Follow these steps Access the setup page of the router by launching an Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes) click on ok. Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode
should is  mixed- Change it to G- Only ... click save settings ...

  • Range expander for WRT300N options

    1) What options are there to expand the range when using WRT300N ?
Can you explain what options I can consider ?
    2) What type of connector does the WRT300N use for its antennas ? (for example: R-SMA female)

    Hi,
By adjusting the direction of the antenna and press the auto-configuration button, it detects the available access point or router and configures itself with the network.
    Good Luck !!!!
    Thanks

  • Range Extender for WRT300n Router

I set up a wireless network with the WRT300n router and the WMP-N PCI Adapter in a remote desktop.  There is marginal signal strength and the connection goes in and out.  My question is:  Is there a range extender available for this router?  Because if there isn't, then I've wasted several hundred dollars for this equipment!!!

Just what sort of distance are you talking about between the WRT and the PC? THis model already has extended range over most anything else...
    1. You may want to think about a repeater between the two
    2. You may want to think about directional antennae

  • Wireless without airport (securing the network) please tell me how!

    What I have:
    1. Apple eMac 1.42 Ghz G4 / 1 GB ram (hard wired to belkin wireless g router)
    2. Apple iMac 400 Mhz G3 / 768 MB ram (hard wired to belkin wireless g router)
    3. Compaq EVO N610c Laptop 2.0 Ghz M4 / 1GB ram Built in wireless card
    4. Belkin wireless G router ( F5D7230-4) ver 4001
    5. Charter Hi-Speed Internet (yes it works after the router install)
    What I’ve done:
    1. Installed the software for the router on the emac as per the instructions
    2. Installed the hardware (router) as per the instructions. Everything works fine.
    What I need:
    1. To secure the network
    2. To share files (between the emac and laptop)
    3. To stop brodcasting that I have a wireless connection
The only information I can find about securing a wireless connection on a mac has to do with using an “airport set up” well guess what I don’t use such a set up. My emac sits in my office along with my sons G3 imac, both work fine and can get on line.
My laptop connects wirelessly just fine. What needs to work does. My main problem is I cannot find information about securing my network using what I have ( a belkin wireless g router) not an airport set up. The other problem is minor, I just want to share some office and pdf type files between the eMac and the Compaq.
Any help with this would be great
    Thank you,
    Clark

Sorry if I'm being dense, but I don't see how the Macs enter into this at all. Your macs are wired to your router. Your only wireless connection is from the router to your PC laptop. Your solution is going to come from Belkin, not Apple.
You need to encrypt your wireless signal, using WEP, WPA, or whatever else your router supports. Belkin should provide instructions for doing that. Your router may also be able to only accept connections from specific MAC addresses. Again, this should be in Belkin's manual.
None of these things will affect how your Macs connect to your router because that connection is wired ethernet, not wireless.
Or is there something else you haven't mentioned?

  • Can you add one of these range expander to a router that is using a WAP54g as a repeater?

I have a WRT54G router and a WAP access Point that I have setup as a repeater. I am working in a big house and there are still dead spots in the coverage. I was wondering if you can add an expander or another access point to further my range? I know which is cheapest, so which is easiest? and can an expander even work with the current equipment I mentioned?

well , as you already have one wap54g working in a repeater mode and must be knowing the configurations i would recommend you to use another wap54g in repeater which will make the job simpler for you

  • Wireless - G Range Expander. I really need help.

I am completely computer illiterate and nobody I seem to ask knows anything about computers. So, please, use layman's terms because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
I currently have a Belkin router that says "Belkin Wireless G 2.4 Ghz-802.11g" downstairs. I play video games in my room (upstairs). Most of the time, my latency is really, really high in my room and it's at times unbearable. When I bring my laptop downstairs to play closer to the router, it works great. I can't ALWAYS play in downstairs and for those of you addicted to MMORGs, you know how bad it is when you're trying to do something with a group and you keep disconnecting. Anyway, somebody told me to buy a range expander and I have without even reading about what kind to get or anything like that. I've bought the Linksys Wireless - G Range Expander. I did the auto-configuration thing and it recognized my router's name and all that but wouldn't connect to it. On the Linksys FAQ it says:
    9. Can I modify the wireless standard that the WRE54G Range Expander will use? * Yes, you can choose from 3 different modes. These are: “Mixed”, “G-only”, and “B-only”. Choose “Mixed” for a network that consists of 802.11b and 802.11g-compliant devices. Choose “G-only” if wireless clients and access points that are making use of the Range Expander are comprised of all 802.11g-compliant devices. Choose “B-only” if wireless clients and access points that are using the Range Expander are all 802.11b devices.
I think that's what I need to do. HOW do I modify the wireless standard? Or what am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Get a computer and connect it to the range expander, make sure you press the reset button on it before anything else.... then set a static IP on your computer...
the reason behind this is you would need to change the IP address of your range expander to follow the IP segment of your existing netgear router.... after setting the static IP 192.168.1.x subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.1.1 on the PC, launch a browser and type 192.168.1.240 then use admin as your password... if you are on the setup page of the range expander, look for the IP address and set it to 192.168.0.240 same subnet and gateway 192.168.0.1 if needed...save the settings and it should normally just expire on you... after changing that, get the range expander and press the auto config button while beside your netgear router... wait for the lights to blink, then release and wait for it to turn blue.... if you have wireless security, connect the range expander instead on the router wired first (as if it was a PC) then go to a computer connected to the router and access 192.68.0.240... admin as password then change your wireless security to the same one as your router... save the settings then turn the range expander off... detach it then turn it on again... try checking the lights if both turn blue...you can place that on the least range you get from the router and it will repeat the signal for you....goodluck and try to get someone tech savvy fo help you just in case..

  • 1 laptop in the house not using wre54g range expander - help!

I have a Linksys wireless router that works great when in range, but was weaker in certain parts of the house, so I recently picked up the wre54g range expander and life is good for 2 out of 3 computers.  I have 2 laptops running Windows XP, latest service pack (1 IBM, the other Dell) and both of these laptops utilize the range expander.  My Sony Vaio laptop is running Windows Vista 64bit with latest service pack and it does not seem to connect using the range expander, but rather the weaker wireless router connection.  Additionally, the connection drops frequently to the router, not sure if it is because the signal is weak or some other issue.  The Sony has a built in wireless card by Atheros model AR928x, latest driver version 7.7.0.331.  I also updated the wre54g firmware to the latest version yesterday, but it didn't make a difference.  All 3 laptops connect using the same WEP key, although I have tried different keys and there was no difference.  This is really frustrating and am not sure what to try next.  Some questions:
1)When I search or connect to wireless networks, I only see the one netwok (not one for the router and another for the extender), so I cannot manually connect to the extender.  Is this the way it is supposed to be?  I'm guessing yes since my other 2 laptops on XP are the same.
2)Is there a way to force a connection through the extender?
3)Are there any compatibility issues with Vista?  i searched the forum and read lots of threads, but nothing found on this.
Any help is appreciated, would really like to get this fixed!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Whats the Model number of your Linksys Router?
    A:WRT300N
Whats the wireless settings you have setup on your Router?
A: Not sure what settings you are referring to.  Am using WEP security.
First of all whats the Distance between the Range Expander and the Router? When you try to Connect to your wireless network on your Vista computer are you getting any kind of error message?
A: Distance is about 25 feet.  Don't get any errors, just get poor signa and frequent signal drops/disconnects.  As I stated, it works fine for my other 2 laptops, so I don't see how it is a configuration problem between the router and the extender, but am open to suggestions.  Is it possible that the wireless network setting is cached with the wireless router connection and therefore not picking up the extender connection?  Not sure how it differentiates between the 2.

  • How do I turn off iCloud on my iPhone & iPad without losing data?

I've been a staunch Apple user since my old Apple IIGS. I'm running the latest Snow leopard, and had already made the decision NOT to upgrade to Lion when I found out that Quicken wouldn't work. I don't use MobileMe, and manually synched my "new" iPhone 4 and 1st geiPad thru iTunes. When I upgraded my iPhone to IOS 5, I had problems with my music that I FINALLY was able to straighten out. I then set up an iCloud account, as it promised to be a better way to keep everything on my 3 devices synchronized. When I synched with my computer, my iPhone & iPad both got double events in iCal. I've figured out that the events were loading from the computer AND from the cloud. I've been reading discussion groups that say that once you've set up iCloud, if you turn it off (or delete the account) you'll lose all the data on your computer that you've sent to the cloud (which in my case is Contacts & iCal).
What I really need is good advice on how to reset my devices to "pre iCloud" without losing any data. I hope someone can help me. I usually am somewhat slow in jumping on the "newest technology" bandwagon. Thanks!

I have deleted my iCloud account before (to test something out) and it asked me if I want to keep the information stored on iCloud on my phone.  I hope that works for you.

  • Safari won't connect to Linksys Range Expander

Hope some one can end my sleepless nights...
I have read the posts on this forum for this type of problem and have followed the advice given but still can't get my neighbours Mac laptop to connect to my wireless network
I have a Desktop PC running windows XP and two laptops running xp and vista. The network is a Belkin ADSL+2 modum and Netgear Wireless Rangemax router WPN824 which is wired by Ethernet to the PC while the Laptops hook into the network wirelessly. I am running WEP encryption on the router.
I hooked up the Linksys WRE54G Range Expander and finally got it confugured on my network and placed it on the edge of my signal but my neighbour has a Mac and can't piggy back. The airport say it is connected to my network but we can't open a page and get on the web. Interestingly she is able to hook up to my router when in my unit with the Airport using the WEP password and I can take my laptop in her unit and connect automatically to my network thru the RE as the signal is excellent.
After searching various threads here and forums elsewhere I configured the Mac's IPv4 to "Use DHCP with manual address" I assigned an IP address of 192.168.1.50 (as advised in the posts) , applied and rebooted - no luck! I have searched all types of sites for any information as I am only a novice
My router is the DHCP Server and has an IP of 192.168.1.1 and subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0. It's starting IP address is 192.168.1.2 and ends with 192.168.1.254. The Ip address of the Range expander is 192.168.1.240 and the subnet mask is the same while the gateway is 192.168.1.1 (router IP) It has WEP encryption enabled using the same keys as the router. Didn't know how to ping using the Mac so no info there sorry.
When we assigned an IP address in the ethernet settings on the mac we configured IPv4 "Using DHCP with manual address" as per advice from other posts. We then only had the option to set an IP address and nothing else.
When we go to "Network" we have a green light next to AirPort and it says "Airport is connected to the network JLay (my SSID). You are connected to the internet via AirPort".
We tried various other types of configurations with IPv4 but nothing works
Any advice is appreciated as I've now hit a brick wall

Seems that I needed to type in the DNS server address (10.0.0.2) when I configured IPv4 manually. I used an IP address for the MAC 192.168.1.50 (as suggested) and same subnet mask as the router and used the IP address for the router in the router box.
    What a relief!

  • WRE54G RANGE EXPANDER

WOULD THIS RANGE EXPANDER WORK WITH ROUTER MODEL WAG54GS??

Will the range extender work with a cable modem gateway (netgear cg814wg)?  If so, how do I configure the two devices so that they communicate with each other?  I set up the linksys range extender and I now have two networks...thanks for your help.

  • Trouble getting range expander to complete site survey

I was able to connect my Wireless G range expander to my router with WEP disabled. When I tried to get the expander to see my router with WEB enabled, the setup wizard site survey keeps failing. Any suggestions?

Fixed the problem by calling the 800# tech support.  Although slow, the guy walked me thru it.  I am connected but I do not see any improvement in the signal?  I have read thru the enitre postings and have a few things to try....any other suggestions?  The Router and Range Expander are on the same level and only  20ft apart and the desktop is around the corner another 8 feet.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Absolutely sure.. There is no connection at all.. reset is only the router side of the TC.
For the hard disk to be erased you need to access the airport utility disk page.. request erase and confirm the operation.
    2) I can access to time capsule by ethernet but I am not able to input the corret setting by myself
    Thank you again
I am uncertain why if you have access you cannot change settings.. but that is why you reset things so any of those problems should be fixed.
Here is the Apple info on reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
And here is the quote from the horse's mouth so to speak.
Factory default reset: Perform this reset if you wish to repurpose the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule and want to remove all personal profiles and settings first. This reset resets the device to its state when you first purchased it. Data stored on internal or external hard drives connected to the device will not be erased. If you choose, you may manually erase the hard drive using AirPort Utility.
