Reset root password on T3 array

In a new position I have inherited 3x T3 arrays (2 live one spare).
Unfortunately due to a number of staff changes prior to my arrival the root passwords on two of these (1 live and the spare) have been lost.
Is there any way to re set the passwords, even if this means data loss?
Thanks.

Or you could check the sunmanager archives. :)

  • How to create/reset root password on OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
I am currently a standard user on a late 2008 Macbook Pro. There are two users on my computer, mine and another admin account. I do not know the password to the admin account. Before I upgraded to OSX Yosemite I had created a root user password in SUM using the command "passwd". After I upgraded (I reset my computer) I was back at square one, me as a standard user and another admin account that I didn't know the password. After I upgraded the “passwd” command didn’t work.
I tried to obtain the root password using multiple SUM commands like, "rm /var/db/ .AppleSetupDone" which didn't work because it said that it couldn't find the file. Then I tried to use the command, “/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist” and then entering “passwd”. However that didn’t work. (Everything I did was after I mounted the drive.)
So I was wondering if anyone on the forums knew of a way for a standard user to reset the root password without the knowledge of the admin password.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey SamuraiPizzzaCat,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use automatic login. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
OS X Yosemite: Login Options pane of Users & Groups preferences
    Automatic login
Choose Off to require users to log in whenever the Mac restarts.
To automatically log in a particular user when the Mac restarts, choose the user’s account name and enter his or her password.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • Cannot reset Root password from Leopard installation DVD

User installed Leopard with the Upgrade option, and discovered his administrator user account had been reset to standard, as described in
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306876
However, when the user tried to follow the instructions for the password reset utility, he discovered that the User account selection pull-down was grayed out. So he cannot select the Root user, or any user account to reset the password.
All user account have been set to standard and there appears to be no Root user.
    What next?

    Sorry. Wrong forum. Reposting.

  • [Solved] Reset root password

    Hi folx
I need to reset the root password. I tried going into GRUB and appending the relevant line with:
    (1.) single
    (2.) 1
    (3.) single init=/bin/bash
    Result:
(1.) asked for root password during boot
(2.) asked for root password during boot
(3.) didn't get that far as it went into kernel panic
I downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 desktop to use as a live CD, but that didn't work as the CD just dumped me into an initramfs session.
How am I supposed to reset my root password?
    Thank you, wickyd.

this has all been discussed before - ad nauseatum
    1) boot up with _any_ live cd
    2) mount your root filesystem as - say - /mnt/fs
    3) vi /mnt/fs/etc/passwd
           change the first line to:
           root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
    4) unmount /mnt/fs and reboot
    5) you can now log in as 'root' with no passwd
    6) pwconv && passwd     (now set new password)
    <edit>
With all due respect - chroot is _not_ the way to go.
In order to actually _set_ a new password, you have to run the same kind of
authorization as in your present system - it may be different for different distros.
    </edit>

  • Resetting root password

    Hi
I have a Sun Ultra5 Server running solaris 2.6. I have lost the root password and would like to reset it. Does anyone know how I can reset the root password? I have a bootable Solaris software CD.
    Thanks
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
It is good to know that you have a bootable cd.
Well to start with don't if you have lost the root password.
    We can reset the password.
    Way to reset the password.
    1. boot the system to come in ok prompt.
    2. then boot from cdrom in single user mode.
    3. after booting from the cdrom mount the file system (root file system c0t0d0s0) which contains the etc\shadow,password ... files.
    4. then vi the shadow file and remove the password.
    5. save and come out.
    6. reboot the system. you login as root then you will be promped as to give new password.
    7. So here give the new password.
    Warm Regards

  • Reset root password my macbook air

    Hello ,
Im trying to reset factory my mabcook air ( using Cmd+R) and it shows a password to enter the recovery mode ,
i have disable my root password but still it keeps apearing..
as far as i rememebr i never set a password in the laptop .
how can i solve this matter.
    Regards,

If you see a window with a padlock icon, it's asking for the firmware password, not the root password. If you don't know that password, take the machine to an Apple Store to have it removed. You may be asked for proof of ownership.

  • Reset root Password Prime Collaboration 9.5

Hi everyone, can anyone help me with the know how of password reset or retrieving of the root password of a Prime Collaboration 9.5 VM.
    Thanks!!!

    Fernando,
This is similar to another post for PC 9.5. Unfortunately the same answer.
To my knowledge there is no way to recover the OS Admin password without root access and no way to recover the root password once it is lost. Only the globaladmin password for PCA and PCP have a recovery script (don't confuse this with the OS admin password).
Sorry I don't have a better answer for this.

  • Reset root password of OVS Server

    Hi Guru,
I have install the OVS Server 3 and now am unable to connect using the root password.. I need to reset the password so that I can login to the OVS Server.
Can you please help to provide steps to perform this
Note: I have already tried to boot OVS Server into the single user mode but it’s not working.
    Thank you in advance
    Regards,
    Jignesh

OVM server is just linux with the Xen hypervisor so it should reset fairly easily.  Did you follow steps like the ones below, this is for RHEL which is the upstream Distro for the OVM Server kernel.
    1. Boot the system and when you see the following message "Press any key to enter the menu",  press any key.  (You will see the list of available kernel versions.)
    2. Press e in order to edit commands before booting.
    3. Highlight the list item with vmlinuz in it by using the arrow keys and press e.
    4. Now type single or init 1 at the end of the line.
    5. Then press enter and b to boot the system with the new argument. (The system will boot into single user mode and you will see bash prompt)
Now it's time to change the password:
    6. Type passwd
    Examples:
    ### Shell Commands ###
    passwd
    Enter new UNIX password:
    Retype new UNIX password:
    passwd: password updated successfully
    7. Type reboot to restart the system.

  • Reset root password vCenter 6 Aappliance

    Hi all,
Due to misconfigured keyboard layout, I used a wrong password for the initial installation of vCenter 6 Appliance.
Is there a chance to reset the root password? Login to Web Client with SSO [email protected] is possible.
I tried the thing with single user mode in GRUB, but there, I need also the GRUB password which is also the root password(?).
    Any advice?
    Thank you!
    Peter

I already did the same with the VMware Support, but I´m not sure if I remind every step...
Boot the Appliance VM with a Live-CD (Ubuntu,SUSE,...)
Change/set the root password to "vmware"
Mount the system disk from your vCenter appliance
In the /etc/shadow file of the live-system  copy the line with the "root" entry to the /etc/shadow file of the appliance disk
Delete the old "root" line in the file
Boot the appliance an login with the "vmware" password

  • Sun 7120 - problems with resetting root password?

We have just taken delivery of a Sun 7120 system, did the initial config today no problems, then came to log in to tweak it and it refused my root password. Logged on the serial console with the same password fine, logged out and now it won't let me back in, just says "login incorrect". Have reset the CLR PW jumper on the mainboard, and rebooted and it then comes up in the preboot system, but reports errors about the ILOM. After powering down and removing the jumper, the root password is still there!
Output on bootup attached below, can anyone help?

  • Reset root password

I lost the root user password
is there any way i can reset it?

Yes, you can reset a forgotten administrator's account password.
The usually-recommended path is via the tools on the install DVD, though there are other ways.
Have a read here for details:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156
If you don't have the install DVD, there remain ways, but they're somewhat more involved and somewhat more hazardous. (If you don't have the DVD, post up here.)

  • How do  you reset the root password in Mountain Lion?

After install of Mountain Lion on my old iMac, I could not enter administrator, no password would work, Apple support helped me go through terminal to reset root password and root as administrator . I then was able to reset myself as administrator with a new pasword. I used that paassword a few times now it wont accept it again. I dont remember all the steps to reset the root password and recover from this situation.. Can anyone help?  Is this a bug in Mountain Lion?

I'm having similar issues but other concerns
    1. Can't go into recovery mode since its protected by firmware password, which I don't have. All option keys sequences go into the same firmware padlock, which I don't have the apparent pin.
    2. In terminal mode it didn't happen to recognize that unix command.  Also since I'm just on guest would that reset for the admin or possibly the guest acct?
    3. I've done the DIMM pulls and even though older model, 2011, it didn't appear to a reset for the firmware password.
    Any other options??

  • Root password and /usr/lib/cron/tabs folder

/usr/lib/cron/tabs is owned by root with the permissions of "drwx------ 2 root". My user on this machine is an admin but I cannot see the contents of /usr/lib/cron/tabs and I do not know the root pw. As an admin on this machine how do I reset the root PW or get into the /usr/lib/cron/tabs folder?
    Thanks.

    you can use
    *sudo ls /usr/lib/cron/tabs*
    with your admin password.
You can reset root password by booting from the leopard install DVD and using "Reset Password" utility.

    Hi,
To recover the root password, you'll want to follow these steps:  http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6128/products_password_recovery09186a008073cab6.shtml#later.
Even though it is not specific to the profiler software, the appliance is the same so the recovery process is the same.
If you've lost the admin password, you can reset the password using this procedure:  http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/nac/profiler/configuration_guide/310/p_user_man31.html#wp1066696.

Solstice DiskSuite[TM] Software: How to Delete and Reset a Lost Root Password on a System With a Mirrored Root Disk [ID 1010755.1]
    Solution
    Steps to Follow
How to delete and reset a lost root password on a system with a mirrored root disk.
    1) Insert the Solaris[TM] Operating System CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
    2) Once the CD-ROM is in the drive, perform a stop-a. This brings the system down to the "ok" prompt.
    3) From the "ok" prompt, perform a single-user boot from the Solaris OS CD-ROM.
ok boot cdrom -s4) At the "#" prompt, determine which disk is the system's boot disk (containing the root file system). There are several Oracle architectures and various configurations of systems when it concerns a boot disk. As a general rule, most boot disks are attached to controller 0 (c0). Usually, their SCSI target is
either 3 (t3) or 0 (t0). However, Oracle machines are very flexible, and the boot disk could be at a different location. If you are not sure which disk is your boot disk, perform the following steps to determine the location of the boot device:
    a) # eeprom boot-device
The output might appear to be simple, such as "disk" or "disk1" or more complicated, such as a pathname "/iommu/sbus/espdma@4,8400000/...../sd@3,0:a".
    b) Make note of the boot-device. If the boot-device is a pathname, it is beyond the scope of this information to provide the location of the customized boot disk. However, for most configurations,
finding the customized boot disk is an easy task. The "Format" command shows all available disks:
    #format
    Searching for disks...done
    AVAILABLE DISK SELECTIONS:
(enter its number): c) Enter d to exit format.
Now, you will have an idea what disks are on the system. Therefore, if the boot-device is "disk" and format shows "c0t0d0" (on some systems "c0t3d0") then that is the boot device. If boot-device
shows "disk1" and format shows "c0t1d0," then that is the boot device. If format shows multiple disks, then based on what the "eeprom boot-device" command shows, the system's boot disk would be:
    boot-device format
disk c0t0d0 or c0t3d0 (machine dependent)
    disk1 c1t0d0
    disk2 c0t2d0
    disk3 c0t3d0 or c0t0d0 (machine dependent)
    and so on ....
    5) Because the system was not brought down gracefully (no root password means having to use the Stop-a keystroke to "crash" the system), you need to run "fsck" to clean the root partition (slice). The fsckalso confirms that you selected the proper slice.
    # fsck /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0
where the X and Y are determined by the previous procedure. It is also possible to have a root partition which is not on slice 0 (s0), but, again, that is not a standard configuration.
The output of "fsck" looks like this:
    ** /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0
    ** last mounted on /
    ** Phase 1 .....
The second line in the output of "fsck" ("** Last mounted on /") confirms that this is the correct root filesystem partition. Answer "y" to any questions fsck asks. There shouldn't be too many items
needing repair. If there are, there is a possibility of a corrupted root filesystem. After fsck is finished, mount the root partition:
    # mount /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /a
Again, X and Y are the same as for the fsck command.
    For example:
    # mount /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /a
    6) From the root prompt, set the proper TERM type command (such as vt100, dtterm, sun, and so on)
    by entering this command:
    # TERM=sun; export TERM
    7) Use the VI text editor to edit the /etc/shadow file:
    # vi /a/etc/shadow
    8) The first line of the /etc/shadow file is the one you want to modify.
    It looks like this:
    root:c3.yAVmYodWsc:6445::::::
    9) Delete every character between the first and second colons in the first line of the file. When you finish deleting the characters, the line should look like this:
    root::6445::::::
    10) Press the Escape key, then enter the following to save the file and exit vi:
    :wq!
    11) Use the VI text editor to edit the /etc/system file andremove the "rootdev" line shown below:
    # vi /a/etc/system
    *rootdev:/pseudo/md@0:0,0,blk
Don't comment out the "rootdev" line. Actually remove it.
    12) In the /a/etc/vfstab file, replace the lines for the system filesystem meta-devices with their underlying partitions. For example, change lines from
    /dev/md/dsk/d0 /dev/md/rdsk/d0 / ufs 1 no -
    to
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0 / ufs 1 no -
ONLY change the lines for root (/) and the filesystems that were affected by the actions you took in step 1 of this procedure. All other metadevices may stay as is in this file.
    13) Unmount root, check the root filesystem, and then stop the system:
    # cd /
    # umount /a
    # fsck /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0
    # stop-a
    14) Boot to single-user mode:
ok boot -swTHIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT; YOU MUST BOOT TO SINGLE-USER MODE TO AVOID FILESYSTEM CORRUPTION.
If the system does not boot to single user mode, you might have made a mistake in the previous steps.
    15) Because the root password was cleared in an earlier step, press Return when prompted for the the root password. Once you are in single-user mode, you must clear the metamirrors and all the sub-mirrors for the root filesystem. For example, if root (/) is d0, run the following command:
    # metaclear -f -r d0
Running the metaclear command not only clears the metamirror but also clears the submirrors that are part of this mirror.
    16) When the metamirror is cleared, continue the boot up to multiuser mode by either pressing CTRL-D or by entering the following:
    # exit
Now everything should be as it was, except that the system partition is on the underlying partition and isn't mirrored. You will simply need to re-create the metadevices for the root mirror as you had originally.
    many thanks

    Hi,
    Halt your machine.
    Boot with fail-safe mode.
format and list out the disks. (You can get the root & mirror disk (c#t#d#) details from /etc/lvm/md.tab of your root or mirror disk. Earlier explorer output may help)
Mount the root disk and remove the password entry in /etc/shadow
    umount it.
Mount the mirror disk and remove the password entry in /etc/shadow
    umount it.
    reboot the server.
    Hope this helps!
