Reset safari vs empty cache

In Safari 7.1.4, how is "reset safari" different from enabling the develop menu and "empty caches." I thought reseting safari did that.

Well, after thinking about it, I looked here. But it tells me a little more of what that does. I'm wondering, based on this, if resetting safari does not do the same.

  • Safari Reset and Empty Cache - What and When?

    Hi all,
An easy question for most of you i'm sure.
What do Reset Safari and Empty Cache actually do and when should I consider doing it?
    If ever?
    Thanks
    Fragglerock

you really only need to reset safari if you are having issues with it.
Clearing the caches is something you should do every once in a while though, the caches folder will hold some temporary files that will build up and can just take up space on your computer.

  • I have a macbook pro (OSX Lion) and just updated to 10.7.5. There is no longer the option to empty cache in safari. Is this a glitch or a feature of the update?

I recently updated my macbook pro to 10.7.5 and the option in Safari to empty cache is gone. Is this a glitch or is there some other way to empty cache?

    Uninstall Genieo:

See if that makes a difference.
    Ciao.

Yes, it will do no harm, but it is meant for trouble shooting and you should not have to use it all the time.

  • Empty Cache doesn't remove all files

can't quite find the answer i'm looking for with a google or forum search - perhaps someone can help.
I want to get rid of my entire internet browsing history. I've reset Safari and emptied the cache numerous times, but files relating to old searches keep appearing, but in strange places.
For example, I was doing research for "company X" a while back. After the project completed, I emptied the cache, etc. Doing a mac search (cmd F) for anything related returns no files. However, when I'm using another, unrelated application, say, Photoshop, I'll go to import a file. In the import dialogue box there, if i type anything related to that previous "company X" search, it will appear as a Safari file (along with other files), though it is grayed out and unable to be selected.
So, because these files show up in that import dialogue box, they have to be somewhere on my system, correct? But because i can't find them using Cmd F, and i've already emptied Safari caches, etc, I'm at a loss as to where to find these files and how to get rid of them.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
You can activate Private Browsing from the Safari menu. Safari won't remember pages you visit, search history, or autofill.

Safari 5.0.6 repeatedly crashes.  MacBook Pro 10.5.8  I've emptied cache and reset to no avail.  I've tried solutions found in other threads but the more advanced don't seem to apply to me. Help, please.

Not sure what other tests they could run for me. I've pretty much run all the tests I can using Drive Genius and Tech Tool Pro 5. Is there anything they use that I don't know about??

Right. If you are using delegated privs and sudo, make sure that sudo is configured to pass on the PERL5LIB and ORACLE_HOME environment variables at least.

  • Safari 6.0 empty cache

Does anybody know how to empty the cache in Safari 6.0, within the new OS. Used to be empty cache was a click under the Safari pull down menu. Now the 'empty cache' is gone. They have the 'reset Safari' click, but that is not what I want to do. Just empty the cache, if that is still possible. I can't think of a good reason why Apple will take this option away. Thanks.

Enable the Develop menu in Safari Preferences > Advanced. The Empty Cache option will be there.

  • Safari: 'empty cache' is gone !!??

When I click on the heading 'Safari' I can not choose 'empty cache' from the pull down menu because the sentence is gone!? How can I get it back? I don't know how the sentence disappeared from the menu... but it is gone !

    Accoring to the Safari Help:
    Clear the entire history list
Open Safari if it is not already open
Choose History > Clear History, and then click Clear.
To clear Top Sites as well as your history list, select “Also reset Top Sites.” The Top Sites page is based on your browsing history.
Clearing your history also empties caches, removes website icons, and clears the list of recent searches. Website icons are small graphics that help identify sites on the Internet. You see them in the address and search field, the bookmarks list, and other places. You can see your recent searches by clicking the magnifying glass at the left end of the address and search field when it’s empty.

  • When I downloaded 6 I lost the "Empty Cache" function. The "Reset" function is still the same, though. How do I get the empty cache back?

When I downloaded Safari 6 I lost the "Empty Cache" function. The Reset function is still the same as 5.7. How do I get the empty cache back?

    Empty Caches
    Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
    Best.

  • I accidentally deleted "empty cache" from safari drop down, what are the keystokes for doing it manually?

What are the keystokes for doing it manually? or how do you reload it to the drop down menu?

"Empty cache"  is not available in Safari 6.  (It's not possilble to delete that option from the Safari menu).
    Several workarounds.
One. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar.
Now from the Safari menu bar click Develop > Empty Caches
Or, from the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari.
Select:  Clear History  (that empties the cache as well as deleting history. Deselect all the other boxes, then click Reset.
Unfortunately, Safar 6 omitted the empty cache keyboard shortcut.

  • Can I reset my search engine to Wikipedia? I don't want any of those default Search Engines anymore they are too intrusive. And I can not Empty Cache any more and Google has taken over the address bar?

Can someone please explain how this now works? And am I obligated to load Mountain Lion. It's a very expensive price to pay for online privacy that isn't even Private anymore. I am old enough that I don't have to pay ransome. I can just quit.
I didn't say and was never asked If I wanted Mountain Lion. I can no longer 'Empty Cache' at the end of a session online and when I do a search now (and this has all changed overnight) the query is typed into what used to be the address bar and when the search results appear, after reading the first result and I want to read the second or fifth or Any of the other results of the query I am forced to resubmit the search in the address bar because the 'Page Back' button has been removed and the Little Red Dot closes the Search Results Page altogether.
What else am I in for with Mountain Lion? I already know that I do NOT want anything to do with iCloud. I am willing to bet a lot of money that a pharmaceutical company one day is going to be holding me for ransome with a new drug that was created out of the symptoms of a once - upon - a - time naturally occuring symptom of aging. At least I can turn my Macbook off and leave it that way and the world will not cease to exist. (Or will it?)

    Computer operation 101.
Get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall or reset anything. See these for details:

    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/backuprecovery.html
If you only have a Time Machine backup, ensure that you can reliably restore it to another disk/volume/partition before updating/upgrading.

In Safari 6, the "empty cache" command is missing from the Safari menu. Does anyone know how to empty the cache in Safari 6?
