Al the details are in the question: I want all new windows to open in tabs but they dont, even after I have selected the option " Open new windows in new tab instead"

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • If I reset Firefox due to opening new windows when I use browser or logout of e-mail, will I lose my bookmarks?

When I logout of e-mail whether it is g-mail or yahoo, Firefox closing e-mail in a new window and not the current window. The current window looks like I have not logged out.

No, a reset won't lose your bookmarks, history, passwords, etc. Also, update to Firefox 18.

  • Why doesn't the option "open new windows in a new tab instead" work in the newest version of Firefox when it worked fine in previous versions?

In previous versions when using Google search and clicking on a link it would open in a new tab. Now it opens on top of the Google search preventing a comparison of two links by switching from one tab to another.

    Hello,
    I found this useful extension:

not sure if it solves your issue

  • Under options/tabs: open new windows in a new tab instead does not work. many sites open their popups or new windows NOT in a tab as it should. How to solve this, has been a problem in the last versions incl. the latest.

i would like the option ´open new window in new tab instead´ working properly so no new windows will be opened except when I command them to..
as said, many websites have popups (most are blocked, still some come through) who open in a new window.

Type '''about:config''' in the Location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key. When you see a warning, click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''' button.
    * Preferences that have been modified are shown as '''bold (user set)'''.
    * Preferences can be '''Reset to the default''' or changed via the right-click context menu.
-> In the '''Filter bar''' type '''browser.link.open_newwindow'''
    * Right click the preference '''browser.link.open_newwindow''' and click '''Modify'''
    * change the value to '''3'''
    * click OK
-> In the '''Filter bar''' type '''browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction'''
    * Right click the preference '''browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction''' and click '''Modify'''
    * change the value to '''0''' (zero)
    * click OK
-> Close the '''about:config''' tab and then Restart Firefox.
Check and tell if its working.

  • How to set linked FM hyperlink parameters to open in new window?

I have a URL hyperlink style that is being pulled over correctly from FM without even any mapping to a new character style. However, the link opens within the Help window, and I want it to open in a new window.
I'm aware that you can click double click the link to bring up the Hyperlink dialogue box, then choose the "Display In" radial button option of "New Window." to get it to work how I want.
However, that would require a manual intervention for every link, and even if I did it, I don't think it would retain the tweak once I update the linked files.
The original FM style is a character one, not sure if that might impact the solution here. It can't easily be modified to another style is why I mention it, it's a default style in thousands of pages of documentation.
I see that there are some default  "Hyperlink Styles" in the "Styles and Formatting" Pod. I tried to edit them and reverse engineer to get some ideas for a solution, but no such luck. I can't get any of these to apply as a style either, nothing happens when I try. I think I'm missing some part of how these work.
If anyone could point me in the right direction here, it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    FredMcD,
I had already reset my Firefox which fixed my problem, but your reply was spot-on. I set the newtab value to about:blank, but the actual value that appears now in the address bar of the (blank) new page is "Search or enter address".
Another user told me to check for possibly suspicious programs that had been recently installed - but I found nothing. And nothing that mentioned Conduit
So I think all is well at this point. Thanks for your help.

  • If Firefox is set as the default browser, and any application attempts to open a new window, this fails and I get the error "Firefox is already running..."

Here is what I am running:
Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1, Fully updated to 4/10/2012
Fresh Install of Firefox 11. No add-ons enabled as a result of troubleshooting.
I am a user with administrator rights
    UAS is disabled.
To begin, this has been going on Since Firefox 10 or so. A few months now.
I am able to open Firefox. My add-ons worked (ABP, Flashblock, ABP Element Hiding Helper, IETAB2, Downthemall, Greasemonkey, 4chan extension) had no problems. Firefox is set and has been set for the last two years as my default web browser.
However Since approximately Firefox 10 or so, maybe before that, If I have a Firefox session open, and any other application attempts to open a session in a new window, I get the Firefox is already running, but not responding error."
I attempted to follow troubleshooting advice already posted (look for parent.lock files left behind [none present], multiple sessionstore.js files [none present], create a new user profile, attempted to clear out the "read-only" permission in windows 7, however as soon as it is cleared, the read only permission returns.)
As a last resort, I deleted the Firefox folder, the %APPDATA%/Mozilla directory in its entirety, then utilized CCleaner to remove any and all references to Firefox in the windows registry, then did a full re-install, no extensions installed right now.
I checked preferences and have the option "open new windows in a new tab" checked off. The problem persists regardless if this option is checked on or off. This problem persists in or out of safe mode, even with the brand new install.
    Test Cases:
    All cases:
Firefox is selected as the default browser for windows 7
Case 1: Open a firefox session. Utilize any other program that attempts to open a link to their website in a new browser window or new browser session. Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 2: Open a firefox session. Right click on Firefox on the task bar. Select "open in new window". Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 3: Open a firefox session. Select the Firefox Menu > New tab > New Window. A new window will actually open.
This is the only method of opening a new window in the same browser session or profile that actually works on my system. Attempting to open a browser session from the task bar "open new window dialog" or opening a new window while a current window/session is running will not open firefox in a new window or a new tab in the current session. The "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error will occur every time.

Cor-el's suggestion resolved my problem. Apparently the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable was set to 1 on my system variables. I never made it, and really have no idea how it got there, but deleting this variable and restarting firefox has resolved the issue. Thanks Cor-el!
    Marking case: Solved
Solution: Verify the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable is NOT set to 1. This can be achieved by simply deleting this variable.

  • Firefox will not open new window, Why?

I have Vista home base premium operating system. I am a regular user of Mozilla firefox after had lots of positive feedback as one of the best browser. I had no problem for a good while, until recently I found out my add-on firebug stop working. Then I noticed that firefox stopped working properly, ie; it will no more open new window/s. One window will open after rebooting and i can have a number of tabs opened. When I right click on a web link and take the option to open it in a new window it will not open. When I take the option to open it in a new tab then that would be ok. When I go to the toolbar and click on File and chose option "open new window" again it will not open. I have on many accasions completely installed Firefox using the IObit software and use the advance system care to clean the registry and completely scan the system. I then reinstalled the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. I did that twice. The problem is still there. About the ad-on firebug, when I go to the toolbar and click on Tools, i can see Firebug with the extended arrow, but when I click on the arrow to the extended options, it simply would not respond.
There must something going on, please help.

  • PDF in browser: launch web page in new window/tab

    Good morning all,
Our forms use the hyperlink functionality and the desired result is to have the web page launch in a new browser window, or tab, when viewing the PDF in a browser. When the web page opens in the same window, the form data is lost after hitting the back button to return to the form content.
The current alternative is to use xfa.host.launchURL() function however we're wondering if there is a Preference setting in Reader we could enable/disable instead. Most of the links are text embedded in paragraph so hyperlinks work and look really good.
Changing the internet options of the browser is not an option for us.
Also looked at Reader's Edit | Preferences | Documents | Open Cross-document Links in Same Window which appears quite promising based on the Help's description:
Open Cross-document Links In Same Window
Closes the current document and opens the document being linked to in the same window, minimizing the number of windows open. If the document being linked to is already open in another window, the current document is not closed when you click a link to the open document. If you do not select this option, a new window opens each time you click a link to a different document.
But for some reason I can't explain, the web page still opens in the same window after disabling the cross-document option. So maybe I should rephrase my question and ask if someone knows any reason why option doesn't work?
    Thanks much!
    Hélène

    Hi Hélène,
I don't know of any option to force hyperlink behaviour when the form is opened in a browser.
Have a look at George's suggestion to use a button without fill or border over the text: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1342426#1342426
It is a bit of double handling and you need to maintain the button in the correct position. However it does give you greater control in forcing a new browser window/tab.
The open cross-documents preference didn't work for us either.
When testing forms here we see a big difference in behaviour between different browsers and OS. So while you may get a hyperlink working in IE, the same solution may not work in other browsers. On balance I think overlaying a button would be the most robust.
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • Some programs open new window instead of new tab in open window

Firefox 17.0.1. I have the option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" set, I use the Tree Style Tab 0.14.2012111201 addon (and others unrelated to tabs or windows), and I have multiple profiles. It seems that since I started using multiple profiles some programs (MediaMonkey's help, for example) insist on opening a new Firefox window. If I select any of the one or more currently open profiles it says "Profile in use". Some programs that want to open an internet site to show their help files do open a tab in the current browser window, as expected and desired. But more programs cause the Choose a profile box to display.

Make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).
If you need to have more than one profile open at the same time then start subsequent instances with the -no-remote command line switch.<br />
You can not send links from other programs to a Firefox instance that is started with the -no-remote switch.
In such a case you need to drag links in a Firefox window or paste the link in the location bar.

  • Why is 'Open link in new tab' suddenly opening a new window?

When I right click, and choose 'Open link in new tab', it instead opens the link in a new window. This happened suddenly with seemingly no cause. I have checked and double checked the option "Open new windows in new tabs instead" but it was checked. How can I fix it?

  • Links in other applications opening in new windows now instead of tabs randomly

Randomly today after booting up my PC and opening firefox links I receive from other people on like AIM or Steam chat open a whole new window where as before they would just open a new tab. It's veryyyy annoying and I have the option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" on. I'm using aurora build by the way, if that matters.

Try to ask in the daily thread or create a new thread on the MozillaZine Builds forum, maybe someone there knows an answer.

I cannot open a new window even when i have the option "Open new window in tab" checked.

  • New tabs always appear in new window--how to change back?

Just upgraded to FF4. Now, when I try to open links in a new tab (by Ctrl-clicking), they always open in a new window. Subsequent links also open in the new window, so I'm forced to have two open windows, rather than just have all tabs in one window.
SOLVED after reboot. I couldn't mark my own reply as a solution, for whatever reason.

    # Press Alt+T
    # Click Options
    # Click Tabs category
    # Check the option "Open new windows in new tabs instead"

  • Click on a new website and it opens in a new window?

For some time now when I click a link to something from a different web page it opens in a new window.
Or if I select the option "open new windows in a new tab instead" then any links to a different website open in a new tab.
For example If I search for something in Google, then click any of the search results. The result opens in a new website.
However If I click something else from the Google website e.g. "Shopping" Then this opens in the same page.
The results is very irritating as I end up with hundreds of windows (or tabs) open.
I suspect this is a setting rather than a bug as it is 100% of the time.
Any ideas guys? I would love to go back to normal browsing

its according to the website your viewing.
Some website code is wriiten to open the link in same page/tab or new page/tab.
if it opens more than one page per click, then check out for malware/thread.
