Resets during movie rental playback

I've watched two rented movies using the Apple TV. In both cases the Apple TV seems to reset itself in the middle. For example, in the second movie I watched, at around 1 hour, and than 3 times after that, the Apple TV reset back to the home screen with no warning. It only takes a couple of seconds to reset and I can carry on from where it left off, but it's very annoying. Is anyone else experiencing this?
I think it's never happened when streaming material from my Macbook.

Hey CharlieBrown777,
Thanks for the question. iTunes Store Movie Rentals cannot be shared with Home Sharing:
iTunes: Setting up Home Sharing on your computer

- In addition, rentals from the iTunes Store can't be streamed or transferred to another computer using Home Sharing.
Instead, you can learn about moving the rental to another device:

  • Can I disable display of titles & blue bar during movie playlist playback?

During movie playback from a playlist, my AppleTV briefly displays the name of each movie it encounters in the bottom left corner of the screen. At the same time, the blue scroll bar briefly appears.
Most of the time I like this behavior, but is there some way to disable it for when I don't want to see it?
For example, I'd like to be able to set up my AppleTV for a movie party and simulate on old-time drive-in movie program. I want set up a playlist to show clips of coming attractions, homemade commercials, the feature presentation, etc., and not have the titles and blue scroll bar flashing on the bottom of the screen each time the AppleTV encounters the next clip during playback. The flashing titles & the blue scroll bar are very distracting in this case.
If there is no option to disable this behavior, then I hope it gets added to the feature wish-list for a future update.

i don't believe there is any way to turn it off.

  • ITunes Movie Rental Playback too dark

I have downloaded 100s of GBs of video podcasts, free TV programs, & other free video content from the iTunes Store since I obtained my Mac Mini (Early 2009 2.0GHz-4GB-320GB OSX.6.6, 'iTunes 10.2 (34)') in 11/2010, and they have all played admirably--no complaints--on my 14 year-old Samsung CRT SDTV (connected via Mini-DVI to VGA and this converter box [http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&pid=4724&seq=1&format=2]. In fact, ANY video (QT, Flash, Silverlight, etc.) I've played on it has displayed wonderfully...this is mainly what the Mini is used for.
(I should note that the Mini shipped with OS 10.6.3, but when I upgraded to 10.6.4, the overall display had a markedly richer, but darker quality to it--enhanced the desktop & apps' appearance, but (as many on these boards at the time decried) added darkness to all video. I went through convulsions re-calibrating the color using the provided system software, but could never quite get back to the as-purchased video luminance, and had to compromise with a "futzed" calibration. Subsequent OS updates have not changed this).
However, last night, for the very first time--and I've had an iTunes account practically since the iTunes Store opened--I decided to make a real purchase, and rent a movie while visiting some friends. I brought my Mini & cables over, plugged into their similar vintage Panasonic SDTV the same way as into mine: via RCA jacks; had done this before to show it off, and everything displayed fine without a hitch. We also both have FiOS broadband internet. Before renting, everything was great--I showed off photos using the OS screen saver, then played with Front Row, watched a Danish cooking show podcast (quality was near normal SDTV), so, everything was functioning properly.
I went into the iTunes Store and ordered the rental for "Inception" (no HD option, and I have iTunes configured to always play SD quality in prefs). Not five minutes after the download began (it said the 2GB+ file would d/l completely in 62 minutes), I double-clicked on the Inception icon to begin playing, and when the video window appeared, clicked the diagonal arrows to go into full screen. Boy, was this video dark! We might have thought it was intentionally produced that way, but one of my friends had seen the film in the theater, so I knew something was wrong. After half an hour of suffering (could not make out details at all--we were actually missing plot items), I paused the movie, and went into display prefs to try to lighten things up--didn't have time to do a full-blown re-calibration, but I unchecked "Show profiles for this display only" and picked a non-specific profile that was the brightest. It helped some, but at that point I figured I'd never rent from iTunes again...really a waste of $4 (beforehand, my friends were going to get the DVD from Redbox for $1, and told them the $3 savings would not be worth it).
After 90 minutes or so, I attempted to rewind a bit on the Apple Remote (old white version) as I had already done many times--but this time I supposed I held the "back" button too long, and the movie display disappeared completely. "WhaddidIdo?" So, I double-clicked the Inception icon in iTunes Rentals again, maximized to full screen, and was rather confused--the new movie window was SO BRIGHT AND FULL OF PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN DETAIL that I had trouble finding where I had originally intended to rewind to...the difference was so great, it seemed like a different film! "Don't touch anything else now!" my friends implored: "Leave it like that! That's how it looked in the theater."
    WHUHAPPEND?
After the film's end, I stopped it just as the credits began, and went back to watch the beginning again...watched for half an hour or so to get what we had missed in the darkness. Then, being late, stopped it and shut down, intending to watch more of it at home before the file expired this evening. Despite the late hour, I couldn't resist hooking up my Mini at home again and trying it out. BUMMER. I could watch it, but it was back to the "dark ages." All my other videos--podcasts, streaming flash, whatever--all still look great. Just not this paid movie rental.
Any ideas, folks? I sure am skeptical now of purchasing ANYTHING ELSE on iTunes again.

    Hi Epski
Let us know how you go as i'm having the same issue also. I upgraded to yosemite and itunes 12 at the same time and thought the OS upgrade was the issue. I downgraded back to Mavericks again (for lots of reasons i won't go in to here) thinking this would fix the problem but it didn't.
When i play any video content from itunes 12 in full screen goes dark once the controls fade away. QT, appletv or anything else plays them perfectly, as per itunes 11!
You don't have a Samsung TV by any chance do you?

  • Movie rental playback freezing and chopping

My movie rentals will stop with no audio and then fast forward, skipping parts of the movie and they all do this constantly.  I can't get through a single movie, not even a trailor.  Just started recently.

  • Itunes movie rental playback on TV

Now that the UK has finally caught up with the US with regard to itunes movies (or films over here!) I was wondering how people find the actual experience of downloading a rental to their touch and playing it back over a line out connection to a TV? Quality / Battery life etc... My previous experience with a 5th gen video iPod was an acceptable picture but not that I would say was any where near DVD quality (understand the heavy compression used).

    Hi musicvan
You are correct,it isn't DVD quality. I tried a couple of music videos from my ipod Touch before the UK introduced movie renting/buying. The quality was acceptable, however I don't think I'll be watching any movies through my Touch on my 32" LCD, especially now HD is getting more popular.
You also need to purchase the ipod Touch docking station. Any other third party ipod dock will only give you sound, no video (something to do with a security chip Apple installed on the Touch). The alternative is 'Apple Component AV Cable', which finally gave me what I was looking for.
    Hope this helps!

  • Error 5103 Answer Needed / Movie Rentals

It appears that many are running into the 5103 Error, related to issues which prevent iTunes Movie rental playback. Some have resolved the problem, simply by adjusting the system clock in the System Preferences pane. Some individuals have had success by simply reinstalling Quicktime. However for the most part, neither of these suggested fixes have worked.
It can be assumed that this is directly related to Apples recent efforts (post rental launch) to nix the attempts by some to circumvent the time limits set for viewing rentals. This is just a guess, and it may actually be an unrelated issue. For all the time benders, consider this a slap on the wrist from Apple.
Unfortunately this appears to be affecting individuals who have adjusted system clocks, unrelated to the above mentioned reason.
I have emailed Apple Support, as well as spoken via phone to Tech Support, and currently have only been redirected each time, back to the other. I assume that eventually Apple will remedy the issue, but for the time being, I will continue to mine Apple support for answers.
If anyone has resolved this issue, please post the solution.

    Problem Fixed....Great Job Apple.
I contacted customer support tonight, and spoke to a very pleasant technical support rep. I explained my problem with the 5103 error, and previous attempts via email, and phone support to remedy the issue. She felt the issue needed to be resolved quickly, and was in the process of getting me in touch with the appropriate technical representative. While on hold, I attempted again to playback my movie rentals, and bam!!!! Murphy's Law.....the movies played. When the representative came back on the phone, I explained that it was working. I guess I just needed some of those good positive vibes from one of Apples excellent staff.
Thanks Apple for fixing the issue, whatever you did! And thanks to the rep. who really wanted to resolve the problem.

You can move the rental between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period. However, the movie can only be played on one device at a time. If you rent a movie on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple TV, it is not transferable to any other device and you must watch it on that device.
This is a confusing statement. Can really move the rental between devices or not???

If you originally downloaded it to a computer, yes. If you originally downloaded it to an iOS device, probably not; if you want to try anyway, use the Transfer Purchases function in iTunes.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

i'm thinking of renting a movie. I would like to know if i rent it and enjoy it enough to buy the movie, will i get a discount during the rental period toward my movie purchase? Similiar to Complete my Album for the iTunes music store.

    Thanks.
Apple please add some form of this into your store! Like Complete my Album I'm sure it would increase sales.
I know you just lost 1 sale =/

  • Unwatched movie rental vanished during faulty internet connection

I recently purchased a rented film that I intended to watch in the evening. My internet connection has been erratic in the past week, and whilst it was downloading from the itunes store the connection timed-out. When it came back on I checked for available downloads and it resumed downloading as if nothing had gone wrong. Fine. No problem there.
But then I tried transferring it to my ipod so I could watch part of it there during my commute to work, but the connection timed out a second time. This has happened before when I was transferring over a rental, and the transfer simply stopped. It said film could not be transferred, and it remained in the rental library on the computer.
This time around, it looked on the film tab on the ipod menu as if it had transferred to the ipod, but hadn't been validated. I waited a couple of hours for the internet to come back on, and when I tried syncing with itunes again so the film could be validated, it vanished.
I looked in the ipod menu, I looked in the rental tab of the film library, and I even checked the recycling bin. The film just vanished. I never even clicked play. I'm furious. Thats my money wasted. I can't find it in the purchased playlist, because it was a rental, and there appears to be no option to redownload without paying twice. This is outrageous. I either want a refund or a new copy, but who am I trying to fool? I'm dealing with Apple here, after all...
I need to know if there is a process I can go through to get my copy of the rental back.
