Resetting Address Book's template

Hi, is there any way to restore the template file in Address Book to its original configuration? My pop up list of fields has become out of control with fields I'd like to permanetly detele.
Thanks.

As Eric said it's all here:
Haven't messed around with mine much so that might be the default setting

  • Trying to import address books and templates from old Netscape Communicator 4.8 to Thunderbird. What old version of Thunderbird to use ( new version wont do

Been using Communicator 4.8 for years. Working fine had no reason to change. But now security settings wont work with yahoo pop server.
Want to import my address books and templates to thunderbird.
New version of Thunderbird 31.0 doesn't have import for communicator that old. Earlier versions do.
Figured I'd use old version of thunderbird to import and then update thunderbird to 31.00
Tried thunderbird 3.0 which has importer for 4.73 but getting error message that it is having trouble. Anyone know last version of thunderbird that had netscape 4.8 importer ? Thought maybe a later version would be able to import and then update to newest thunderbird.
    Thanks

1 - there is no importing involved - you NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library
2 - you have to run programs after you download them - go to your applications folder ==> utilities and launch the library upgrader  --  Then launch iPhoto to complete the upgrade

Follow the instructions below, ignoring the calendar information.
If you wish to delete the entire Calendar (or Address Book) database on your BlackBerry, follow the directions below. • Address Book template-to-display oddity..

(Hi! I first posted this query in the Leopard>Mail and Address Book Discussions, but there's been no response there, so I thought that there might be a greater chance of a response from those with Tiger experience and expertise..)
I've spent three-quarters-of-an-hour searching through previous posts to see if this has appeared as a problem before, but can't find any mention here in Leopard nor Tiger Discussions..
I'm asking on behalf of my beloved, who's tearing her hair..
She's created an Address Book Template (Address Book>Preferences>Template) and has successfully imported records from Filemaker (by using 'Address Book Importer').
HOWEVER, although she's created (or renamed) fields in the Address Book template, such as
    home page
    birthday
    last changed
    Data in/change
    C1
    C2
    work done
    practitioner
    etcetera (..those C1 and C2 are Comment fields..) nevertheless when data's been imported (and it does all import OK!) some of the fields shown in her Address Book cards are displayed in a different order.. e.g;
    home page
    birthday
    last changed
    Data in/change
    C1
    work done
    Admin info
    category
    flat
    C2
..etcetera. In other words, the C2 field, for instance, is displayed far further down the fields list than it is in her template, where it sits just beneath C1!
This doesn't seem to be based on some peculiar alphabetical or alphanumeric sorting of the fields or the data within them, and when all fields have data in them then that re-ordering is consistent ..e.g; C2 is always separated from C1 by having 'work done', 'Admin info', 'category' and 'flat' between them. ("Flat" is an address field; in the UK "flat" means "apartment".)
We don't seem to be able to find any re-ordering facility which would bring back the display into the same order as the template.
Is there such a facility to re-order the display, apart from re-ordering the template on a kind of hit-&-miss basis until it sticks properly in the cards display? ..And has anyone else come across - and solved? - this problem of fields being arbitrarily(?) re-ordered in the display?
    Many thanks in advance..!

The template preference should work for you. If you hit the green + button you can add fields with all kinds of different default names. If those field names don't match your needs you just select the field name (the bold typeface one) and scroll down in the resulting box and use the "custom" field to add any title you wish. It should change the name of that field to the name you wish to use and that will match the named fields you all area already used to using. You can do this with any field so you should be able to match any fields you wish.
I hope I understand your question correctly. If not...sorry.

  • Add another dept. to Address Book?

The top of the listings in Address Book don't have enough lines available.  I want to enter a sub-department under the listing for "Department," and I can't.  I have gone to Address Book's Template, but it won't let me add another "department."  Is this part of the address modifiable?

    Hi Christian,
Interestingly, I found a pointer that might address the first problem you cited. There's a method that might get your secondary user's shared contacts into your addressbook after all...
    http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/contacts/display-other-contacts-in-address-book
Check the instructions out, maybe you can make that work for your scenario.
If you want to go the Public Folders route, the intermediary step (after you create the folder) is to add the folder to your Public Folder Favorites.  Browse, find the folder, right click the contacts folder and choose Add To Favorites.  Once you
add to your favorites you should see the option to show the folder as an email addressbook.
    Good luck,

  • Address Book can't sync with Google

    Hi,
I've been trying to sync my contacts with Google Contacts for the past two days, but I can't seem to make it work. It keeps saying "Incorrect Account or Password", but it actually doesn't even connect to Google (I used Cocoa Packet Analyzer to sniff the traffic and no packet was sent).
If I login with a different user, however, it just works.
I've already tried deleting my Address Book preferences and application support folder, it doesn't fix it.
And BTW, when I reset Address Book and launch it, at first it's empty, but after a few seconds it automagically (don't ask me how) recover my contacts. I've got an Address Book archive on my desktop, but I presume it shouldn't be loading it without asking me, right?
Any help would be much appreciated as I'd rather not move everything to a new user account just to make syncing work. Thanks!

Upgraded to Snow Leopard and I was experiencing this problem. Checking with Gmail help @ http://www.google.com/support/contactsync/, it says "If you enter your email address and password correctly, but the password isn't being accepted, try repairing your keychain". I tried to repairing my keychain twice, no problem found and the error message remains. I turned back maybe 15 mins later, guess what, it talks to google and the password accepted, now I am able to sync Address Book with Google. Hope this helpful to you!

  • Address Book & iPhone rearranging contact fields by themselves

I've been searching for a solution to my issues but haven't been able to do so, neither on any forums or anywhere in the internet.
    I've got iPhone 4 iOs 5.0.1, Mac OS 10.5.8 and Address 4.1.2 and I have 2 problems;
    1) Whenever I try to rearrange the fields of one my contacts in the Address Book, I can do so during "Edit card" mode. As soon as I hit "Save", everything is back to square one.
I mingled with Address Book/Preferences/Template but no solution. Still, almost each of my contacts have different fields and different sortings which are not in line with my templates.
    2) When I sync my phone via iTunes, things get even more complicated. My phone rearranges the fields with different templates and they vary from contact to contact.
I must say that the main problem is with phone numbers as I only have Work & Home for the address fields and they just work fine.
    However, with the contact numbers, instead of the mixture described above, I'd like to have a standard template in the same following order such as;
    Work
    Home
    mobile
    mobile 2
    etc...
and be able to use that very template all over.
Can anyone give a hand please?

I actually just posted this issue as a question before I saw yours, the thread is titled "GLITCH ALERT! iPhone 5 contacts syncing"
I experienced the same thing on my iPhone 5, black 32 GB.
I synced my contacts today and the order the information was displayed was randomized, in that it was not the order I chose, this affected the contacts app on both the iPhone and my laptop.  For example, I have my phone number fields in this order: home, mobile, work; my e-mail address fields as: home, mobile (for text), mobile (for pics), work; I have a similar orders for URL fields as well.
On any given syncing session, for each contact, either all the fields within all categories will be in a totally different order, or some of the categories and their fields will be intact while one or two will be randomized. For example the order for my phone numbers might be randomized as work, home, mobile, NOT as I indicated above.
I spoke with Apple Tech Support and the particular tech said this is the first he’s heard of this problem, and that in syncing, the display of entries on the laptop app and on the phone should match.  He suggested as a solution to back up the iPhone and restore the phone to the factory settings then restore the backed up files.  They also advised they would alert the tech engineers.

  • Problem Adding Custom Labels to Address Book

I add custom labels to the Template in Address Book Preferences. There's no problem at this stage, the custom labels appear along with the preset labels in the Template. But when I leave Preferences, go back to Address Book and add a new card, the custom labels disappear.
    What am I doing wrong?
Any help would be appreciated. And thank you in advance.

Barney-15E: Thanks for your previous reply!
Would you check this work-around for me? I think I found a way to compose a master list of custom labels and have them available for multiple cards (new and old) in Address Book on a MacBookPro and in the Contacts directory on an iPhone. I have tried compiling a master list of custom labels using Address Book Preferences/Template and I find there's a limit to the number of custom labels I can add as a label for each field.
    Here's my workaround.
    1) Go to the iPhone Contacts directory.
    2) Add a new card.
    2) Enter data in these fields: address, date, email, and phone. The standard label will appear on the screen below the data.
    3) Tap the standard label and you will go to a screen with 2 windows. The top window has the standard or preset labels for that field but below it in a second window is a button "Add Custom Label". Tap on this button and you will be able to add the text for a Custom Label for each of these fields. This will then become a master list of Custom Labels that can be used in most labels in the iPhone Contacts Directory.
    4) If you have your IPhone set up to synch with your MacBookPro or iMac, the entry in the iPhone Contacts directory will be transferred to your other Mac, with the Custom Labels.
Barney - 15E: Can you find a glitch??? To me it seems to make a master list of custom labels available for all card, new and old. The only problem is that the input has to be done on the iPhone.

  • Using Address Book with 2 mobile phones

Since a few weeks I have a second mobile phone that I also use with iSync for contact and calendar synchronisation. The problem was that Address Book could only pair with / connect to the newly added phone, not the 'old phone' anymore.
I found some old threads with the same problem stated, but no answers were given. I did find a fix for it though. I used the application Pref Setter to clear the preferences of Address Book (you can also delete the file located at: /library/preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist). Restart Address Book and the bleutooth mobile phone entry is now empty again. You will be able to choose a phone to pair with.
However, if anyone knows how to use 2 phones simultaniously, please tell me!
    Powerbook 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You can't use Address Book with more than one phone at the same time unfortunately, it simply does not have this functionality.
I developed a little application called "Reset Address Book Pairing" which does exactly that without deleting (and therefore losing) your Address Book preferences. Just one setting in the prefs actually needs changing.
It's included with the Sony Ericsson Address Book Enabler, which adds Call & SMS support for over 40 new Sony Ericsson phones to the Mac Address Book.

  • Address Book - Cannot update to 4.1.1

Hello all, I seem to be unable to update my address book to the latest version 4.1.1 (699), I am stuck on 4.1 (687). I am on the new Unibody MBP, I transferred everything over from my old Macbook when I got this computer, my system is upto date, nothing available in Software Update.
Any ideas on how to either reset Address Book, or to force an update? I cannot find any downloads or links to help me with this issue, so ANY help would be appreciated.

Did you also transfer all your old applications? Did you update to 10.5.6 using the Combo Updater? Did you repair permissions and the hard drive before updating?
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Address book: inputting spouses

What is the best way to list a spouse? I want the name to appear when printing labels. such as:
    John Smith
    Jane Robinson
    2 Something street
What i do now is this:
For first name I input John
For last name I input "Smith and Jane Robinson"
i'd prefer a separate line, because when I synch with anything (like blackberry) I have to see her name anytime i call up John Smith. I've tried putting the spouse under company, but i can't get it to print in labels.
    Any advice?

There is an alternative that will give you another field to input names etc. open the address book, then go into Address Book/preferences.Template Tab, then go to add field, and if you were to choose nickname for example, you will be able to input another line.
    Hope this helps.

  • Where do you enter birthdays in Address Book?

Title says it all...where do you enter the birthdays in the Address book so they appear in iCal??

  • I have an iphone4 and i can only hear calls when i use speakerphone.  I'm trying a master reset but how do i back up my contacts from my address book??

I have an iphone4 and I can only hear calls when I put them on speakerphone.  The people I'm on the phone with can hear me I just cant hear them.  I am about to try a master reset but how do i backup my contacts from my address book? Does itunes do that when i backed up the rest of the stuff on my phone?

Back it up in iTunes! Just make a backup of the entire device but make sure you check sync contacts and the option to add contacts from phone to address book on computer.

  • In Address Book, why does Apple let you create custom fields in the Template cards but not have them available for importing?

I open Address Book, go into Preferences, select Template and under the Names field (friend, assistant, father, etc) I add a custom field called "Principal".
I also add two more custom fields in the Email area.
Quit Address Book then relaunch. Add a new contact and the new custom fields, Principal, etc. are there. All good so far.
I have a Now Contact file with about 200 contacts in it. I export all fields as a Text file, Tab delimited. No problems there. With Address Book launched, select Import, pick the text file, leave Text Encoding on Automatic and click Open.
The window that shows the fields for Address Book and fields for the text file side by side opens. This is where you match up the correct fields for importing. If I go to one of the fields from the text file that I created a custom field for, click under the Address Book heading on the Do not import, scroll thru the Apple choices of fields, none of the custom fields show up. Only the original Apple ones are there. Why does Apple let you create them in the Template area but not have them available for importing? Does anyone have suggestions on getting around this?

While most likely not of interest to you, Spotlight can also tell you where the files it finds are located
Hover the mouse pointer over the name, and press Command-Option and the path to the file will be displayed.
As for opening a terminal session in the directory where a file is located, there is Applescripts that do just that as well as specific features in Lion/Mountain Lion terminal:

  • How to delete a custom field created in Address Book template?

It is possible to create a new custom field name in any of the pop-up field categories in the preferences template for Address Book.
But, once created, there does not seem to be a way to delete or edit the newly created custom field name. That doesn't make sense.
Tell me that I am wrong, and then tell me how to delete or edit a custom field name. Thanks!!

Thanks Pascal, I can change the viewed template field areas as you have described. My problem was with modification of the pop-up list entries: adding, deleting, and renaming user created custom field entries. I have since figured out how Address Book allows these functions; unfortunately, that specific information is not present in the Address Book help file.
