Resetting AirPort Express

After resetting the AirPort Express the name of the router changed to default but to access the router I still need a password. How is this possible? Can any one explain this phenomenon to me? How can I by-pass this as I do not remember the password.

Hello SuhailK. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you need to reset the base station Administrator's password back to it's default, you just need to perform a "soft" reset; To reset the wireless password, you would need to either perform a "hard" or "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

  • Have to reset Airport Express

    Hi,
My home wifi network using an Airport Express and MBP has been flawless; then I introduced an iPhone. Now I need to reset (unplug) the Express after my MBP leaves the network to get either my MBP or iPhone online. i.e. the MBP will recognize the network but can't connect, same with the iPhone. After resetting the Express, both connect fine. Any ideas on how to rectify this?

hi JMA8 and welcome to Discussions,
by unplugging the Airport Express is not really resetting the unit. Its considered a Power Cycle.
you might have to try this:

  • Problem with factory resetting Airport Express

I am trying to do a hard factory reset my airport express. I want to reset it to the factory default so that I can change the settings so that it connects to my comcast wirless modem. I followed the instructions on the apple support site. I held the reset button will the device was unplugged and then plugged it in while still holding the reset button. I held it until the green light flashed four times. But the stupid thing will not reset at all. Just the same blinking orange light. No green light. And of course, non identifiable on airport admin utility. This is really frustrating. Anyone know how to solve this problem.
    Thanks

I have the exact problem described by AKAPLG. I've tried EVERYTHING with no good result.
    - My network does NOT show up in AirPort Utility (and even the old Airport Admin Utility)
    - Even after hard reset I can still see the old name of my network but am still unable to join it.
    - I've tried connecting directly with Ethernet to my MacBook Pro, but it is unclear what I'm supposed to do next, the manual doesn't mention this at all. When it's connected I do not see my AX in the AirPort Utility menu when I rescan.
    - The "Factory Reset" described by the booklet that came with the 802.11n device is inconsistent with what I see when I try it. I get a single green blink followed by a long solid yellow (sorry Amber) followed by blinking amber. I never see 4 green blinks, as described.
This is the worst Apple experience I've ever had. Period. Any more advice please before I take this POS back to the store and trade it for a punch in the ribs or a hot stick shoved in my eye?

  • Reset airport express for each use.

I use the AE both for home to stream music, at the office to extend a network and while traveling to create wireless network in hotel rooms. Each time I have to reset the base station and basically start over. I use Leopard at home and Vista at work and travel. Is there something I can do to not have to go through the whole setup process each time? Thanks.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by you "have to reset the base station and basically start over", but you may find useful the ability to your AirPort Express to hold multiple "profiles". In AirPort Utility initiate a manual setup, then pull down the "Base Station" menu and select "Manage Profiles". You can then define a profile for each environment. You'll still have to restart your AirPort Express unit each time you need to switch profiles, but you won't have to re-enter any configuration settings.

  • Why do I need to reset Airport Express each time?

    Hi all,
I am using Airport Express for streaming music. I am using BT wireless hub for internet without any problem. AE is connected to the BT Hub. Point is, each time I start my MacBook Pro or iMac, iTunes doesn't find the AE, nor does the Airport Utility. When I do a soft reset of my AE, the problem is resolved, I can stream music, until I shut down the computer, then next time I am facing the same problem. Using latest OS versions on iMac and MacBook Pro. Any ideas? Thanks.

The AirPort Express has no capability to remember multiple networks, so it must be reset whenever you change locations.

  • Need to reset Airport Express

I just got speakers to connect to A express. I am now trying to play music wirelessly from laptop. Not Working!!! Looks like I need to reset airport etc... Unfortunatley my password is not working and I cannot change any settings. Any advice??? Thnx

Push the reset button down for about 5-7 seconds until the led blinks rapidly. This is a hard rest and the PW should be back to default....public.

  • When trying to reset airport express password, I've got an error code -16.

A friend of mine gives me an AirPort Express which I intend to use at home to connect it to an audio device in my living-room. I’ve already have a wireless network based on a Linksys router, so the idea is to extend my actual network.
As the Airport was used, it has already a password, which my friend does not remember.
After reading the user manual, I’ve achieve to get into the configuration window, after I’ve made all the modifications (including the device password), but when saving I’ve get an error code -16.
    Any help or advice?
PS: BTW, sorry for my English, it still needs improvement ;-)

First you cannot extend your linksys network with the apple expess. at least not in the typical definition of extending a network. you should first do a factory reset of the express to wipe out all prior settings.
you do this by unplugging the unit and holding down the reset button while you plug it back in. wait 10 to 15 seconds before releasing the reset button.
you'll then want to configure the airport express

  • Resetting Airport Express 802.11n Wi-fi

Hi. I'm having problems with my new AirPort Express 802.11n.
I am attempting a factory reset, but am reading conflicting instructions. Please confirm the correct (sequence) of steps: (a) hold down reset button (b) plug into power while holding down the button (c) wait until light flashes. This is where I get confused: in the manual, it says wait until it's flashing amber and on the Apple website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1450?viewlocale=en_US it says wait until it flashes green 4 times. Which is the correct way? And, do I have the DSL model connected to the Airport Express while I'm resetting, or just the Airport Express by itself?
And, any tips on getting the Airport Utility to recognize the AirPort Express so that it can be configured?
Any type of advice / help would be appreciated.

The support link is correct. You should see four green flashes.
And, do I have the DSL model connected to the Airport Express while I'm resetting, or just the Airport Express by itself?
Although it is not required, I would disconnect the DSL modem when performing a reset.

If you attempting to access it wirelessly with the AirPort Utility, be sure that you first connect to the AXn's wireless network. If that still doesn't work, try (temporarily) connecting you computer directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port on the AXn ... and then, try accessing it with the AirPort Utility.

  • Can't reset Airport Express

I have two Airport Express units along with my Airport Extreme. Because of changes in my system, it has been necesssary to reset the Airport Express units in order to clear information. One Express resets fine, the other one won't reset. I have tried holding in that reset button every which way, plugged and unplugged and it still retains the settings it had before (including a password that it won't let me change).
I have to assume something's wrong with the rest button but I don't know what to do at this point.

I'm having the same problem. I've tried resetting the Airport Express every way I can think of, soft, hard and factory but the button doesn't give that "click" feeling they talked about and it definitely doesn't reset. I'm calling Support now, hopefully they'll send me a new one - it's annoying though this is the first time that I've had Apple Hardware fail out of the box...

  • Reset airport express

I reset my airport express, but then it said researching homestation
and then it gave an error, I already reset a couple times, but can't find a solution!
    What to do

You can reset the AE to factory settings, and then set it up as you first installed it:
To return AirPort Express to the factory settings:
Use the end of a straightened paper clip to press and hold down the reset button for ten seconds.
AirPort Express restarts with the following settings: Â AirPort Express receives its IP address using DHCP.

  • Reset airport express flashing orange

I've reset my airport express and reconnected it to my reciever however the orange light keeps blinking. My airport utility says it's green; however when I play via iTunes, I get an error saying the airport express is not connected to any speakers. I have it going into my CD port on my denon reciever, Please help.

I would suggest that you perform a "factory default" reset on your AirPort Express Base Station (AX), and then, use the AirPort Utility again to reconfigure it for streaming. If this still doesn't remedy the situation, please post back with some additional details about your current network configuration with the AX; also include which version of the AirPort Utility that you are using.

  • Resetting Airport Express - disaster

I have an Airport Extreme hooked up to a DSL modem. For many months, I have been using an Airport Express as a WDS remote base (the wireless network requires a password), hooked up to a printer in another room.
I recently took the Express with me on a trip. When I got back home and plugged it back into the printer, I could not get it to work. All the settings seemed either messed up or lost. I could not get the Airport Admin Utility to see both the Extreme and the Express at the same time. It was either one or the other.
I tried a factory reset, then I tried running the Airport Setup Assistant. It seemed to recognize the Express okay. When I uploaded the new configuration to get the Express to join the Extreme's wireless network, the only result I get is a slowly blinking red light on the Express. I tried opening the Express in the Airport Admin Utility, and the Utility took forever to get over a spinning beachball before asking me the Express' password. I supplied the password, waited a while longer, and the Utility told me it "could not read" the Express' configuration. I tried accessing the Express using the Airport Setup Assistant, and it says there was "an error communicating with" the Express.
Looks like I'm stuck in neutral.
    What's a body to do?

When I uploaded the new configuration to get the Express to join the Extreme's wireless network, the only result I get is a slowly blinking red light on the Express.
Hmmm, I'm not aware that the status light on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) could display red, only amber or green. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108045).
Although, I know you have already tried a "factory default" reset, I suggest that you try it again...and then use the AirPort Admin Utility to set up a WDS between the AX & the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), instead of the AirPort Setup Assistant.

  • Unplugging to reset airport express

To frequently I have to unplug and replug my Airport Express to get the internet. My ISP is Shaw Cable who supplied the Modem which is connected to the Airport. Can someone tell me is the problem with ISP, the Modem or the Airport?

I have been having the same issues for about 3 months now.  Both the Ethernet and the wireless require a complete reset about 2-3x per day to get things up and running.  Comcast says it's not them.  Rather annoying and any help greatly appreciated.  Airport Extreme on iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo running OS X 10.5.8.  (Airport Extreme Utility v 5.5.3)

  • Do i have to reset airport express each time I move

I am really pleased with the functionality of the airport express, with one exception.  I have set it up at my house to extend my wifi network and it works as it should, but I also take it to another venue to do the same thing and each time I move from one place to the other I have to reset the unit, it does not recognise or remember the different environments and automatically adjust,
Am I doing something wrong, or this just the way it is

The AirPort Express has no capability to remember multiple networks, so it must be reset whenever you change locations.

  • Can only print ONE document then have to reset Airport Express to print aga

    The title says it all.
Everything used to work fine until I installed Leopard. Now I can only print one document; subsequent documents will hang at 16% or 28%, etc.
    Anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks,
    Mark

No, you are not the only person with the problem. I have tried it with both a "g" and an "n" Express (I bought the "n" hoping it might work better; nope). I have a Samsung CLP-510 plugged in to it. It prints one document, then I have to reset the Express before it will print again. When it tries to print the next document, it flashes "Unable to open device (read failure)!" briefly, then pauses the printer.
It's been driving me crazy since I installed Leopard, so I basically gave up on the Express as a print server as there seems to be no cure, and Apple seems to have no interest in fixing it. (I have been through several firmware updates since the problem started, and none have made any difference).
+Oddly, though, just now after the seventh reset, it accepted 6 of the documents in my queue (I had 22 in the queue, and I've just been waiting for it to pause, then resetting the router for each document) before it failed.+
