Resetting computer to earlier time (i.e., PC's version of "Go Back")

I downloaded a software update from Roxio. Stupid me! Unfortunately, I don't have my key codes, and Roxio knows me by another email. I'm jammed at the the moment and need to "go back" in time with my computer -- like a few hours. Since I am new to MAC (a previous PC user) is there a way to reset the computer to an earlier time (i.e., prior to the download). Help!
Thanks.
Addison

With all due respect, PC had (and still has) a great "Go Back" or a "Restore System to a Previous Date" function (i.e., return the hard drive and operating system to an earlier date). This was to help the user in such an event as I described, or if some other malady affected the computer (i.e., operator error). It's a software-based program and does not require a constant backup of the system or individual files as your answer suggests. For example, I could reset my system to this morning, and voila, no mess because of an unintentional install of an update. Unfortunately, it appears MAC needs to catch up and help us now-former PC users. We are constantly making mistakes.
Thanks for your time and effort.

  • Reset to an earlier time to regain deleted photos

I deleted files and photos by mistake to create space so I could download and install Yosemite OS X. Can I retrieve the photos by resetting to an earlier time and how do I do that?

If you have your Photo data backup on the Time machine drive than definitely you will be able to retrieve the photos by restoring them from the time machine onto your macbook air.
If you don’t have the Time machine backup then you will have to do a data recovery by running data recovery software like Data Rescue 4.
                                                                                                 " Important "
Unless you don’t recover your files from the trash, don’t trash any other items. If you trash any other items then the deleted files will be overwritten by the recent deleted files. The more you delete later, tougher it will get to recover your photo data with the recovery software.
    Hope this helps......

  • Lost files. How to reset to an earlier time or date.

Dont have time machine and really need to set the mac to an earlier time of the day/date/the last time it was turned on. Lost very important files:(

Maybe a long shot, but you could download the demo of a data rescue utility such as data Rescue III and see if it can see the missing files. If so, and they have not yet been overwritten, you may be able to retrieve them.
    Good luck!

  • HT1752 Can I go back to conditions on my computer to earlier time?

Something went wrong with a program that has schedules for tasks we do each week.
Is it possible to set computer to go back in time and start up from then?
This is a IMac blueberry 233MHz machine running on OS 9

This may or may not help.
If the iMac running OS 9 is working, but the specific program that was doing it's scheduled task is not:
Make sure you have quit that program.  Open your System folder for OS 9.  Open the Preferences folder.  Locate the Preference folder or document for that specific program.  Remove it from the Preferences and System folder, but do not trash it.
Try opening the program, it should regenerate a new Preferences file.
It's been a long time since I used OS 9.  I can remember having a program quit running because the preferences file for that program got corrupted.
If it doesn't help, return the old Preferences file for that program back to it's original place.
    Good luck.

  • I had 10.6.8 then I decided to migrate to Maverick and after the reebot it is taking longer for the system to start up. Today I had to reset my Imac 3 times. Is there a way to go back from Maverick to 10.6.8?

I just downloaded Maverick and now my Imac is not workgin well. I have to turn off and restart it many times. Can I go back to my previos operating system? is there anything I should do or maybe Maverick is not supported by Imac 2007.1 Intel?

Yours is the earliest that will run it.  Make sure you have more than 15% of your hard disk free, and at least 2 GB of RAM.   And short of recovering your Backup, there is no way back.  Unless you want to lose all the data on it.

Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.
Your post is very vague on what occured, and there are many types of "crashes" it really depends upon what see on the screen and what the hardware does, we can't see it to tell you, so you have to tell us.
I suggest you run through these user tips and provide more information about your hardware.

If this is going way over your head, there are local PC/Mac techs that will assist you for a fee, Apple only does hardware repairs and is advised to use them if you discover it is, especially if under warranty/AppleCare.
Hard drive and RAM upgrades can be handled yourself or by a outside tech in many older models of Mac, but don't expect Apple to cover the new parts.

Can someone please help with my issue listed - My ipod 4G wont go past the apple logo when I turn it on - it will stay on the apple logo for few min, then blanks out and back to the apple logo.  Tried reset option/troubleshoot several times.  Also wont show up on computer at all when I plug in to USB.
Any tips are very much appreciated.

Place the iPod Touch into DFU mode.  This will be similar to what the factory would do to install the iOS onto new iOS devices.
Placing it into DFU mode will allow you to "format" and install the current iOS for that device.
To place your iOS device into DFU mode.
First connect you iOS device to you computer.
Open iTunes if not already open
Now turn off your iOS device using the power swipe.
Press the home and sleep button on your iOS device for 10 seconds.
Release the sleep button but carry on holding down the home button.  For another 10 seconds.
Your iOS device should now be on DFU.  Click on restore and iTunes will download the latest iOS for your device.
Hopefully that sorts it if not, you will have to go to a service centre or call Apple Care up and get them to collect it and repair it. (replace it)  Or go into an Apple Store.

  • I have yosemite on my iMac.Can i restore to an earlier time from my external hard drive when i had Mavericks installed?

Hi all. I have Yosemite on my iMac. Can i restore via my external hard drive to an earlier time when i had Mavericks on my iMac? If i can which operating system will i end up with? I would like to do this because i prefer Mavericks to Yosemite. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've never seen that problem, but others have reported it. Maybe you should search for those other topics. You might try the following:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Then download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite.
Then download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • For some reason I have a full page opening screen and cannot get it to go back to normal without restoring it to an earlier time. Is there a fix for this?

My computer would not start this morning, when it did start after repairs, I had a full screen and cannot get it to go back to normal. The toolbars don't show up, nor does the Firefox. I cannot get it straightened up without restoring it to an earlier time.

  • Why does the iTunes AppleID system refuse to work properly without the need to reset the password every time I open iTunes for use?

Alright so here is the issue. When I first started using iTunes I created my AppleID. I locked it in to remember my password and authorize my computer so that I would NEVER HAVE TO ENTER IT AGAIN. So years pass, no problem. Then "ITUNES 11" come on everyone lets upgrade or you can't proper use the iTunes Store. Seriously it wouldn't let me access the store. Go Figure. So I upgrade simple right? No. It really isn't when iTunes 11 rolled out it was riddled with minor bugs that made the experience annoying so I did a rollback and live without the store for awhile.
About a year passes and I try again this time upgrading iTunes through a COMPLETE fresh install, again I did what had done the first time I logged my AppleID and reauthorized my computer. Hurrah other than getting use to the new UI it ran perfectly. Yes Finally! Right? Again.... No. No more than 2 or 3 software updates later suddenly my password for my AppleID is incorrect I was like "Okay?" and re-entered it thinking the big update cleared my settings.
Wrong Password please reset password to continue using the iTunes store.
I was like okay maybe the user agreement change and we all need to reset passwords and re-accept the EUA. So I go through the process to create a new password successfully and reset my AppleID in iTunes with the new password. Come back a few weeks later it happens again this time I enter my new password and what do I get?
Wrong Password please reset password to continue using the iTunes store.
So I first do a repair install to my iTunes than reset my password this time NOT setting it to remember password. Great everything works fine again password even matched my Home CompID so that I could NEVER lose it well come a few days later I try to use the store and what happens?
Wrong Password please reset password to continue using the iTunes store.
to try to make my Long story a little shorter....
This has been going on for the better part of 3 years I have almost completely dropped iTunes which has the better store library for Goggle Play Music who's store library isn't even a third the size iTunes has because their system works and my log-in is my e-mail. I repeatedly completely uninstalled iTunes and wiped it from my registry in hope a clean install would fix the problem but it never does.
My OS is Vista Home Premium Edition 32-bit and no picking on my OS I been working to get a new computer but that isn't happening anytime soon so I work with what I got.

Even removing the .xml files doesn't make a difference. Also, I now installed another update of iTunes, but still having the same problem, and this time there are no .xml files or preference files whatsoever in the Application Data and Local Settings\Application Data iTunes folders. It seems like for some reason iTunes is unable to create these. What should I do?

  • Only able to connect to internet through Broadband DSL one computer at a time.

    Hi,
I am using Verizon Broadband DSL, and have used it for a few years.
    Equipment:
    Westell Versalink Model 327W
Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router Model WRT54G
I have a desktop (running Windows XP), and 2 laptops (1 XP, 1 Vista) that are connected wirelessly. Until recently all 3 computers have been working fine, connecting to the internet on the wireless network.
The problem is this: When any one of the computers is connected to the internet through the DSL none of the others computers is able to connect – I see the message “Connecting through WAN miniport (PPOE)…”, i.e. I am only able to connect to the internet 1 computer at a time.
As soon as I disconnect from the ‘connected’ computer (desktop or laptop) I am immediately able to successfully connect to the internet on either of the other 2 computers.
I’ve tried resetting everything – no luck.
I don’t recall having changed any of the settings and am baffled.
Any thoughts as to the problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Charlie
PS. I haven't called the Verizon DSL Tech Support team yet...but I will soon. I figured on asking here first.

    Ok.
#1 You must get to the network control panel on your computer.
One of the ways, for Windows XP is:
    a) Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections
    b) The screen will look like steps 5 and 6, on http://portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm
    For Windows Vista:
    a) Go to the globe icon (start button) -> Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Manage Network Connections.
    b) The screen will look like steps 5, 6, and 7, on
    http://portforward.com/networking/static-vista.htm
#2 Right click on the WAN miniport (PPPOE), and remove the check mark that says Set as Default Connection.

    This sorted it for me:
Backup your iPhone to iCloud (I believe backing up to iTunes will work too). Now go to "Settings --> General --> Reset --> Erase All Content and Settings" to completely restore your iPhone to factory settings. Assuming you've backed up to iCloud, you'll be asked when setting up your iPhone if you want to restore from an iCloud backup. Choose that option and once your iPhone has restored itself from your backup, this annoying problem will finally be gone! (was for me anyway).
To restore from an iTunes backup, connect your iPhone to your computer, load iTunes. Click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up.
