Resetting default application to "Pages"

When I open a downloaded document (usually originally a Windows document), and click on it, somehow it is always opened in "Open Office" a slow and cumbersome word processing app that translates MS documents and spreadsheets well but is too sophisticated most of the time, so I only want to use it in rare cases when all else fails.
Instead, I want "Pages" to be my automatic default app for such things. How do I reset default applications, in this case to "Pages"?

Select it in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, click on Open With, and change it.

  • Change default application to Pages for .doc files?

When I double-click on a .doc file, TextEdit is the application that opens the file. Is there a way to change it, so that Pages '08 is the default application for .doc files?
    Thanks!

Select the file (in Finder)>File>Get Info, then under "Open With", select Pages and click "Change All".

  • Resetting Default Applications

Just got a new Quad. While I was setting up Tiger, I mistakenly told OSX to use Microsoft Word as the default application to handle .sit files. Of course, I meant to use Stuffit Expander. Does anyone know how to change this?

I just found the answer to my own question. If anyone else is having similar issues, go here (http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/), download this (RCDefaultApp), and all your problems will be solved.

  • Changing default application for Pages and Word docs?

I wasn't sure if this was the right place to ask this...
I just got a new computer, running Tiger. I own older copies of Word (which I hate) and iWork (which I love). When I copied my data to my new computer, all my documents defaulted to opening in the new versions of those programs. Furthermore, it won't let me change the program that opens those type of documents.
I open the information on a document, tell it to open in Pages 1.0, and that works fine. But if I try to tell it to "Change All", it just reverts to Pages 2.0. The exact same thing happens when I try to tell Word docs to open in my old version of Word, or with Keynote. I can open my files just fine within the program, but it's getting really, really irritating not to be able to open documents by double clicking.
Any advice? I can't afford to buy the new programs, even if I wanted them (which I don't, in the case of Word).

  • Reset Default applications for file types

    Hi:
How do I change which applications open when I double-click a particular file type? For example if I want Pages to open up .docx files instead of MS Word. How do I set that up?
    Thanks
    Janet

Highlight any .docx file by clicking on it once and then press Command+I. Under the Open with section, click on the drop down menu and select Pages. If Pages isn't a choice, then select Other at the bottom, navigate to the Pages app and select it. Then click on the Change All button.

  • Default application conflict / bug (Pages + TextEdit)

TextEdit is stuck as the default application for for .pages documents. It stays on the default application place above the separator, but Pages (or whatever else I try to set as the actual default application) gets the (default) parenthesis. It's possible to change single documents to actually open in Pages, but not all.
TextEdit gives this error when trying to open .pages documents (for google and stuff):
The document “---“ could not be opened. The file isn’t in the correct format.
The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format.

Nah, I've tried that and every variation.
Deleting default applications from TextEdit's info.plist (or even the whole info.plist file) didn't work either. Deleting TextEdit did though. Are the default applications also kept somewhere else?

  • My default applications keep resetting

For a little while now (but crucially not since I first purchased my MacBook) my default application settings are resetting themselves. I use Adobe for PDFs, Adium for chat and BonEcho (Intel Mac Firefox build) for the web, but I am constantly being asked if I want to set these applications as default when I start them up.
Does anyone know why my system isn't retaining my default application change? More importantly, can anyone think of a way I could fix this once and for all?
I'm reluctant to delete Safari, iChat and Preview as a fix, so if this could be avoided, then all the better.

  • How to set Pages and Numbers to become default applications for attachment?

I installed Leopard and have just installed iWork.
I started noticing that the applications of .doc and .xls that come in file attachments in my mail do not use Pages and Numbers as their default application.
    .doc uses TextEdit
I copied the file to the desktop, changed the default app to Pages, but it still doesn't work. All new mails with .doc still uses TextEdit as default app.
    How to change this?

  • Pages somehow vanished off my computer. When trying to open a Pages document it says, "no default application" Any ideas where it went and how can I get it back?

The Pages program seems to have vanished off my computer. I can't open any of my Pages documents. It says " no default application" I've tried to search ffor it and there's nothing. Is there an advanced search I could try or some other thing I can do to find it? Thanks for any help.

    Hi msmuffy,
You can re-download it from the App Store: Open the App Store and make sure you are signed on with the Apple ID you used to purchase Pages originally. Click on the Purchases tab at the top of the screen. You should see Pages listed. If it says "Download" next to it, then you can re-download it. If it says "Installed" it means that it is somewhere on the Mac, so go to the Finder and do a Search from there.

  • Reset Defaults

Hi, I'm new to DreamWeaver and web design but am currently
taking 3 web design classes. I have had lots of computer support
and programming classes and lots of hardware and software
experience so far so I am not a complete novice. With that said, in
one of my DreamWeaver MX2004 Design and Application book lessons,
it had me tangle up all of my panels, (put some on the right, float
one in the middle, move tabs out of one and rename one or two. I
have looked through every button and menu item in DreamWeaver MX
2004 and don't seem to be able to find a "Reset Defaults" button
anywhere. Is it true that there is no reset defaults button, or is
there some other way for us novices to reset things? I did go to
the DreamWeaver update page and found a link that works similar to
"windows update" and reset everything as well as getting some bugs
    fixed.
My question is, is there a reset defaults button anywhere in
    DWMX2004?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

Look under Window from the tool bar.

  • How can i specify the default application to save a read later doc in Instapaper

I have an Instapaper account, so that I can mark some online web pages to 'read later' if I wish to do this. I have successfully put the Instapaper 'Read Later' borkmarklet on the dock of my iMAC.
However, whenever, I come across a web page or blog that I wish to read later, and click the 'Read Later' bookmarklet on my dock, it throws up an error message that reads ' There is no default application specified to open the URL' and so I am now at a dead end.
Can someone explain to me where and how I can find the default application to get round this problem. By the way, I did not find this problem with Instapaper's 'read later' bookmarklet on my old Windows PC, where I was able to store pages for reading later with this app, and also to transfer them automatically to my kindle through the wifi connection at home.
I hope someone can assist... Or is there another way - (apart from Instapaper which worked okay with Windows)- to save web pages for reading later with MAC -
    Thanks

This is pretty simple in Safari, in the upper left of Safari you will see an icon that looks like pair of glasses, this is where you collect webpages for you to read later. The feature is called Reading List and looks like:

  • How do I change the default color in pages.

How do I change the default color in pages.  Everytime I try to copy and paste a passage, I am unable to do so because it seems that the ink is always white on white.  Sometimes I am lucky and can change it using the color box in the format bar, but it's a rarity when I'm able to do it.

What version of Pages & what version of OS X are you using?
A problem with an early Software Update for Snow Leopard caused a lot of problems. The problem is not whether or not your system is the current version but how it got there. You must use the combo updater, not the one from Software Update unless it specifically states it is the combo. Software Update will only offer the combo if your system is two or more versions behind.
If you're not running the latest versions of the iWork apps & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. If you installed from the downloaded trial or the retail box, they must be in the iWork '09 (or '08 if that's what you're using) folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • No default applications to open items with varied extentsions

Not being the most technologicaly advanced human here...I repeeatedly am unable to open downloaded files with any extensions other than the basic ones. Right now there are desktop files with .asf, .exe,.wmv extensions that when I try to open them I get the message that "there is no default application specified to open the document "hurl.exe". Is quicktime supposed to handle these files?
Also, when using Safari, I am unable to import graphics into my clip art gallery in Word AND and PDF download from Safari opens just the first page (Still seemingly in HTML) of the doc with no scroll bar or means tonavigate to any other part of the doc.
    any thoughts out there?
    Thanks!

I can give some partial answers. Perhaps someone who is more knowledgeable can do a better job.
I believe that the .exe files are executable files under a Windows operating system. I don't think that you can normally open these in Mac OS X. Perhaps if you had a PC emulator on your computer, you could do that.
There is some info on .asf files here. It looks like you can open these with Windows Media Player and there is a download site listed for them. Likewise, Windows Media Player evidently will open .wmv files, as discussed here. I have not personally used these types of files or WMP.
I am confused by your questions regarding Safari. Let's take the case of a PDF file. After it is downloaded, I would expect it to open in Preview unless you have changed something in your preferences. Does that happen? What happens if you double click on the PDF file on your desktop. Does it open normally>

  • PDF opens in browser and not default application

When i click on a pdf file in a document library, it opens in the same web page instead of Adobe reader. I've set the feature of open documents in default application but in vain.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks a lot in advance

    Hi,
From your description, I know you want to open SharePoint 2013 PDF files with default application.
You could re-install your Adobe Reader, and then test this issue. Also, you can have test in another computer with Adobe Reader.
If this issue is still exist, please refer to this article:
