Resetting firmware via factory reset?

Hi,
I have a late 2008 Macbook (the unibody with removable battery one). I want to roll back my firmware to an older version, because apparently I have this weird, discretely released version of the current firmware that doesn't allow third party batteries. However, apparently rolling back the firmware is not easy. I was told by an apple employee that if I do a factory reset I've got about 70-30 chance of this resetting the relevant things.
So basically, I want to back up my files, but I don't want to use an application that carries over everything (like time machine) since I want all the system stuff to be reset. Basically, I want to drag n' drop. But of course, I want to drag and drop so as many things stay working as possible. Any tips here? For example, can I just drag and drop the applications folder, or will I want to include the "Library" folder if I want thing to actually work? Or am I better off just reinstalling applications?
Thanks in advance!

Firmware only goes forward, if one bricks your machine Apple just replaces your logicboard or if they can't your out of luck.
However I've read stories/threads online it's possible to downgrade the firmware, but I don't know where I saw it.
This is the method to reinstall the firmware in case it gets lost out of NVRAM or botched update, but it won't downgrade it according to Apple.
Restoring firmware on Intel Mac's
So now you at least know how to reinstall the firmware, but I've read the downgrade can occur in place somehow.
Sorry I don't have any more information, you'll have to search the more geekier Mac hacking sites.
Ask on MacRumors.com, there are a lot of hackers there or can point you in the right direction if it exists.

  • What is defference between updating Firmware via P...

I'm N85 user and I want to know What is defference between updating Firmware via PC an Via Device manager on phone?

Firmware updates are usually released via one method or the other, rarely via both.
The NSU method downloads entire ROM images from Nokia's servers, resulting in downloads of more than 100MB in some cases.
The FOTA method only downloads what has changed from the version running on your phone to the latest version available. This means much less data to download, usually around 4-6 megabytes, which is important if you don't have access to a wireless network and have to use your operator's packet data service.
The FOTA method is safer (because it doesn't involve a computer running a notoriously flaky operating system) and faster (because there's less data to download).
Otherwise, the end result is the same.

Any idea then why cant we update the firmware via the NSU for the E62, as the NSU does not accept to update the E62???

there are phones listed that NSU supports if your phone is not listed there is no way you can update your phone's firmware/software unless you goto the nearest nokia care point

  • SPA devices - factory reset/upgrade firmware via HTTP?

I've a number of clients using SPA502G's, SPA504G's, and some of the older/Linksys SPA-922 devices with a hosted PBX.
Getting these devices to resync via http is really handy, e.g.
    http://192.168.1.12/admin/resync?http://prov.domainname.com/something
I also seem to be able to reboot them via http using:
    http://192.168.1.12/admin/reboot
I've just checked the provisioning guide to see if there's any documentation suggesting that I can perform other functions via http, namely:
    Firmware updates, or
    Factory reset
    Any clues?
Similarly, I understand that a sip notification can also force a resync/update, but I can't find any official documentation describing how the SIP message should be formatted, e.g. to specify a URL in the notification.
Can anybody provide pointers to documentation for these?
    Thanks in advance!

  • New firmware and factory reset

    Hi
I was wondering if an automatic update to the new firmware could have caused my phone to factory reset on its own?
    Anybody has the same experience?
    Thanks

Normally not,but in some cases that does occur. Why? I cannot say.It could be a malfunction of the update tool or some app acting up.

  • E75 fails to upgrade firmware via USB

    Hi,
My Ovi suit tells me that there is a firmware upgrade to my E75. From 202.12.01 to
    211.12.01.
I have now tried at least 10 times to upgrade via USB cable but all of them fails before they even start to copy the firmware to the Phone.
I have tried through OVSuite, PCSuit and also with Nokia SW updatear stand alone but all fails with slightly different error messages.
Ovi suite 2.5.8se only tells me it fail because of a disconection withthe phone
PC Suit tells me that I can't connect the phone through an USB hub (which I haven't ).
The strange thing is that I can see that they are comminucation becasue both sw are able to identify my phone and also what FW I am using.
    What could be wong.
All the SW is that latest versions and I have disabled firewals + antivirus.
Also both my laptop and phone have fully charged batteries
    /MrG
    Solved!

What exact version do you have *now* installed on your E75?
Do you know which product code you have?
    Have a look here:
    http://www.nokia.co.uk/support/product-support/device-software-update/can-i-update
Please note that the product code written on the paper label may not necessarily be the product code of your telephone. If you bought it from Nokia it probably is the same. In my case, I bought it from an online store in Germany and the internal product code was not the same as the one on the label.. which is suspicious, but anyway.

  • Updating Pioneer 111D firmware VIA external USB connection

    Hi all
I have a Pioneer 111D that I would like to update it's firmware from 1.16 to 1.29(?) but since
Pioneer doesn't do any firmware programs for Macs I would like to use my new MacBook (intel)
Bootcamp and do the update with a NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter (http://www.newertech.com/products/usb2_adapt.php) but I'm not sure if it can be done via USB or it
has to be an internal connection. Any help with this would be very welcomed!!!!
    Thanks!!!!

I don't think usb firmware update will work. you could pull the optical and take it to a small pc shop and have them flash it for you.
    or try here:

  • Updating 6085 firmware via a Mac

Apparently impossible as Nokia (are you listening ?)persist in turning a blind eye/deaf ear toward Mac users pleas for a Mac Suite. Feasibility of using iSync already noted though I'll need a plug in for my new 6085 - from www.media.de (whence directed on an Apple Discussion Forum t'other day)
So I assume none of us Nokia/Mac folk can ever update our Cell/Mobile phone firmware. I'll be eligble (thanks to my Vodafone contract) for a new phone in 18 months time... and if Nokia still leave me out in the cold I'll desert them.

I, too, hope that Nokia puts out a firmware updater for the Mac.
On the astronomy side of things, Meade Telescopes is known for its Windows software, but kindly provides for an Internet based Java application for updating. Perhaps there's a way for Nokia to do that... but it would be best handled via a dedicated Mac application.
It makes sense for them to develop such given the explosion in Mac users. Nokia phones make a lot of sense for those of us Mac users who find the iPhone wonderful but too steep!

  • How to upgrade e50 firmware via apple mac?

    I own an E50 (RM-170) which is currently running v 06.41.3.0.
How do I tell what the most up-to-date firmware is?
And how do I upgrade the firmware into the phone using an Apple Mac? (I saw the updater software for Windows but couldn't see a Mac version).
    Thanks
    Peter Crow, New Zealand

Check on the Nokia software update site for your specific model. Be aware that they release firmware for different regions at different times.
As for upgrading via a Mac, that isn't available as yet.
Don't bother trying through Parallels. I have and it doesn't work.

  • C887VA modem firmware via SNMP

The dutch isp KPN started to enroll VDSL vectoring, the problem is that several dsl-modem firmwares, embedded in the ios, don't support vectoring.
In the best case this means the line will train in on ADSL instead of VDSL but there are also a couple of firmware versions which are blacklisted and then the router will no longer establish a connection at all, so not via VDSL and not via ADSL.
I'm trying to use snmp to read-out the current firmware-version of the dsl-modem in the 700+ cisco 887va(g) routers we manage, but I can't find the oid.  Does anyone know if this oid exists and if so, what the oid is...?

I'd like to use my own script to do the upgrades. Which would be easy to do with SNMP if I new the right OIDs to set...

    3. How does the built-in RAID controller affect finding the boot block?

2 Here is a quote from the readme file for patch 123482-01
...not planning a Solaris upgrade or re-install, then there is no immediate need to downgrade your Sun System Firmware. You can wait for a scheduled maintenance cycle...
This statement is self explanatory, the firmware patches have an upgrade cycle.
3 Can you explain more about your issues? There are steps to be taken after initially creating a volume with raidctl so Solaris can use them, it is covered in a system Spectrum InfoDoc, did you login to Sunsolve?

  • How do I upgrade my hard drive with Firmware - via Macbook Pro 13.3"

What is the best way to update firmware for a 400GB Samsung HM400LI 5400 rpm
    hard drive?
The firmware file is a .exe file and since I am on my macbook pro I don't see
    how I can do that.
    Drew

Windows in Parallels and Windows under BootCamp are two totally different animals. When using BootCamp, you are booting directly into Windows. Windows has direct access to all hard ware. When you use Parallels, you are in a virtual Windows environment and all hardware access is done through OS X. However, having said that, I don't know how that SSD firmware updater works. There is a possibility that it may not like the way the EFI firmware talks to the drive. Most of those utilities are designed to work with machines that use a BIOS. It's probably best if you just confirm with the manufacturer if it will work or not.

  • Linksys srw2048 unable to update firmware via xmodem (using hyperterm)

I have three srw2048 series switches at my new job. One updated fine via the web interface the other two (after I found a windows machine to use the web interface) looked as though they were uploading the new file but after a reboot I was still on the old verison. So I broke out the console cable. What I have done is to Download Software to the switch (option 1) this kicks me over into xmodem. Once I am in xmodem I choose to send a file (the latest rom) using the 1K Xmodem protocol it immediately gives me retries and errors until it reaches a threshold that ends the session. During this whole process zero k is transferred.
    Boot Version 1.0.0.04
    Software Version 1.0.0.49
    Hardware Version 00.03.10
The only thing I can think is that I must need older files to upgrade to an intermediary version before loading the latest 1.22 rom file.

You might want to pose this question in the Linksys forums at http://homecommunity.cisco.com/
Also, try another terminal program like Teraterm Pro.  Maybe it needs "classic" xmodem?

  • Updating Marantz firmware via CISCO 1921 Router

I have a CISCO 1921 Router running IOS Version 15.0(1r)M15.  There are two Marantz 7701 pre/pro processors on the LAN side of this router.  Marantz makes firmware updates available through the internet.  All other network services seem to run without any issues on the 7701 except firmware updates.  We can stream Pandora audio, various internet radio stations, and receive notification of firmware updates available just fine.  However, if we try to actually update the firmware, the Marantz 7701 connects to the update server, then hangs trying to do the update and has to time out before I can try to do the update again. There is something in the way that Marantz uploads the firmware update that is getting blocked by the CISCO 1921.
If we put an HP ProCurve switch between the CISCO 1921 and the FIOS ONT and assign a routable IP address to the Marantz, the firmware update works just fine.  If we attach the Marantz to an Apple Airport Express that is NATted/routed to a COMCAST cable modem connection the firmware update works just fine.
This is a long shot, but does anyone happen to  have a Marantz 7701 attached to a CISCO router that successfully allows the Marantz firmware updates on the LAN side?  If so, did you have to change any of the "default" IOS settings so the update takes place?
I tried to get some info from Marantz on how they do the firmware update, but the folks that answer the phone didn't have access to any protocol or handshake information.
Thanks for any insight or help on this.
