Resetting keychain in OS X

Followed the directions on the help page for resetting keychain. On third step, in General Preferences, clicked Reset My Default Keychain. Got a pop-up message: "The specified keychain could not be found." So now what? Keep getting all kinds of keychain messages, no passwords work, have to cancel each one in order to progress.  Messages include login keychain not found, no keychain to store Safari, etc. Such a pain! There's got to be an easy fix to this, but have no idea what to do next. Help!

Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
  1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
  2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
  3. Click the "First Aid" tab
  4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
  5. Close the Preferences window
  6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
  7. Enter your username and password
  8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
  1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
  2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
  3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
  4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
  5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
  6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
      "New Keychain"
  7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
  1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
  2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
  3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
  4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.

  • How Do I Reset Keychain and Get Rid of All the Password Popups?

I was away four a few weeks and just before doing so I had reset my user password? When I returned I couldn't remember it, so I had to reset it in recovery mode. After doing this and booting up I'm getting oodles of prompts to enter my Keychain Login which I do not know, so I do reset which doesn't take. Mail also asks for all my mail accounts passwords which I enter and do not take either.
How can I clear all the Keychain info and start from scratch before I pull all my hair out?
Lastly, I do not backup Keychain to iCloud.
    OS 10.9.4

I talked to Apple Technical Support last night about it.  What caused mine to start popping up was that I changed my settings and created a login password for my computer.  It must not have been the same password as my keychain password so keychain password popups started.  Technical support had me reset keychain with the login required for my computer and now I don't have popups anymore.
If you have AppleCare on your computer that is current, you can call technical support with any issues and they'll gladly walk you through your Mac troubles.

  • MB Air won't let me sign in to iCloud from System Preferences. I reset Keychain Access and deleted Accounts plist. No problem signing in via web and on other Mac.

    Hi all.
I've just been given an Air. I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything (which didn't work very well: no Contacts transferred and the Air Contacts application can't even open manually transferred Contacts Archive .vcf).
Trying to transfer contacts led me to iCloud - I thought I could copy them from there. Then I discovered that I can't sign in to iCloud via System Preferences. I get two error messages. The most common one is 'you cannot sign in at this time'. I've tried every solution on the web: I reinstalled Yosemite. I reset Keychain Access. I deleted Accounts plist.
The other message I occasionally get is 'This is a valid Apple ID but not an iCloud account'. It is: I'm logged on fine on my MBP, iPhone and iPad.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance,
    Aida

So - I have been having this same issue, and while it's not totally resolved for me, I have figured out what's causing it.  I am running a machine with two hard drives and to keep my documents on a separate drive from the OS/Applications, I used the Advanced Option to specify the location of my home drive for my user account under "Users & Groups".  I've found that if I reset this to the default path of /Macintosh HD/Users/{username}, that it works fine.  However Apple has a bug in that this functionality breaks when you specify your own home directory.  Hopefully, this will be addressed in an update.

  • After password has been reset how do I reset keychain?

After password has been reset how do I reset keychain?

That article is a great help if you remember your OLD login password.
If not, the bad news is in this article:
OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password
read it carefully, It explains how to change your keychain by using the OLD password.
If you don't remember your original (former) account password
If you don't remember your original password, you'll need to delete the keychain. Deleting a keychain also deletes all the password data saved in that keychain.
If this applies, it means is that your old saved passwords are lost.
You will have to start collecting them anew and adding them to the new keychain. Use Web mail and log in to your email with a Browser. Get them to send you your old password or reset it, then record the new one in Mail Preferences, and it will be saved in the current login keychain.
You will have to do a similar exercise with your other saved passwords.

  • Should I Reset Keychain to Defaults When I'm Logged on Guest User?

Hi, advanced Merry Christmas. As guest and relatives are arriving for Christmas eve, I've logged on to Guest User but should I reset keychain (it appears on Safari) to default or should I cancel? If I reset, will it actually reset my admin account's keychain?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless. Rev. 21:4

Can you provide more details? You have formulated a question which appears to assume some behavior you see is normal and everyone would understand.
I'm not sure how you would reset the keychain in the guest user, or why up you'd want to. When you log out of Guest, it completely erases the user information, including the keychain, if that is even used.
If it is asking you to do that, can you post a screenshot of the dialog box?
there was another post recently about Guest requesting a keychain password, so there may be some obscure problem with the Guest account.

    Hi Donald, first do this...
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Any change on reboot?

  • Can't repair or reset Keychain in OSX 10.10? What to do?

I'm having a problem with a user who just migrated to a new MacBook Air with OSX 10.10 installed, but something went wrong with his keychain during the migration.  It now won't store any new passwords, even passwords for WI-FI networks, so he has to enter them every time.
When I use Keychain Access to verify or repair his keychain it says that the keychain doesn't need to be repaired.  If I 'repair' it anyway, nothing gets changed.
When I try to store a new password, the machine reports that it can't store a new password and then asks if I want to reset the keychain.  I say 'yes', and then it gives me a dialog box where you have to enter the user's login password before it will reset the keychain.  Unfortunately, you can't type in the dialog box; if you put the cursor in the dialog box, and click there, it highlights, but then it won't accept any characters, it just beeps at you if you try to type.  Thus, I can't enter the password so I can't reset the keychain.
    What do I do?

Update to 10.8.3, perhaps that does it.

  • Starting my macbook resets keychain on all other devices

I had activated the icloud keychain on my MacBook (mid 2010). Now every time I boot up my MacBook the icloud keychain on my iMac and iPhone is reset and I have to reactivate it doing the whole process entering the apple ID and safety codes, and so on.
All devices have the latest OS and are up to date. I have the same user set up on my MacBook and iMac.
For me it is not that important to have the keychain on the MacBook but if there is a way to fix that I prefer to use it here, too.

    Quit Mail.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. If you get a warning that the file is in use when you try to empty the Trash, log out and log back in.

  • I reset keychain access and my items disappeared?

I reset my Keychain because it kept denying access to my items and upon restart ( as per instructions from Apple) none of my passwords and secure notes were there. Any thoughts?

Thats exactly what resetting your keychain is supposed to do. It restores it to as it was on day 1, now you need to re-enter all your passwords.

  • Issues no acces to my files and I cannot reset keychain. I look at my backup and all the files are locked.

  • How to reset Keychain

Like I said in an earlier post, i just got my computer back from Apple, where they replaced the logic board, and HD. Tiger was on the new drive when i started up, so i went on to sync all my info up with my .mac account, including keychains, which is also sync with my powerbook.
Now everytime i open my mail.app it asks for my login password for 2 different accounts even when i check the option to remember password in keychain. I have a feeling syncing keychains has cause it to do this...how can i go about resetting my keychains so its on a clean slate.
Also as i side note...when i got my computer back from apple i no longer have imovie, idvd, and iphoto.....whats the deal with that??

IIRC, Apple only guarantees to restore your machine to its shipping state WRT to the OS, not the bundled software that was originally installed. You'll have to reinstall the iLife series from your original install/restore disks.
