Resetting launch services doesn't stop multiple apps in 'open with'

Well, I followed Dr. Smoke's advice on Resetting Launch Services but it made no difference. I still have the same multiple copies of a single application appearing in the Open With menu for a given document. What happens when what should work doesn't?

You could try Mark Douma's Applescript for using lsregister to rebuild the LaunchServices. I put a copy up here:

It evidently REALLY rebuilds things, and requires a restart.

Ability to add multiple apps to Open With file associations

It would be extremely helpful if Bridge's "file association" dialog allowed one to associate multiple applications with a file type, so the Open With function worked like Lightroom's Edit In function which allows the use of multiple external editors. As it is currently designed, only one new "default" association can be changed/added. A current list of other available "editors" also appears in the Open With context menu, but it is unclear (at least to me) where that list comes from because there are some pretty strange entries in the list for any specific file type.

Agreed -- I've always been curious as to what random generator Bridge uses to assign programs with file types.

Finder doesn't remember which app to open with

I'm working on a large text file which is used as a data file for an application. It always defaults to MPEG Streamclip when I go to open it, which I do not want to happen--I want it to open in a text editor. I can change the Open with: option in Get Info but if I alter the data and save it goes back to default MPEG Streamclip on reopening. Then I have to go through a lot of navigation again to get Get Info to open it in TextEdit. This may have to do with the fact that the extender for use with the particular application in not .txt or .doc but something else. Of course I can open it from TextEdit, but that's a bother too. Still it's a text file and I'm wondering if there's a way to make it always open with TextEdit.

I knew there is a way to set an application as standard to open a file everytime with it so I tryed around until I found it
Take the file you want to open -> right click or ctrl+click on it -> say open with.... -> other -> now here select the application you want to open the file everytime with -> now before you click on ok set a checkmark in "Always open with" -> now click open
Once this is done it should open everytime with the selected application.

It shows just 4 always as an option in the "open with" lsit. Also I haven't downloaded any apps for a while so why would it start now?

Add app to "Open with" in MAIL

Hello all,
in my mail app, when I receive some attached file, I can right clic it and select the app I want to open it with. The problem is, Photoshop is not among that apps list and I want to add it. There is the option "other" (otros) and I can choose it there but, I have to do it every single time I want to open something in photoshop.
How can I add photoshop to the "open with" context menu being INSIDE the Mail app?

You're welcome, sadly there's no fix by now. I will send some feedback directly to Apple, if you want, send it here (there's no direct link to Mail app) http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
The main problem is that mail handle attachments in it's own way, making everthing simple for the reader / viewer. You can add an image an resize it within the app, add an image without extension, etc.
Note: I don't know if your know this one, but if you click on the e-mail message and press Command + Y, it will show the Quick look of your e-mail attachments, once in the popup, right click on the Open Preview button and it will show directly the PS app to Open with, among others.

When I try to open a document with the 'open with' menu, multiple copies of a single application appear in the 'Open With menu'. I have reset the launch services using Cocktail, but days later, the same problem reoccurs. Any Idea what is causing the problem and how I can prevent this from reoccurring?

In Mountain Lion in the finder when I right click on a file and select Open With I see several listing of each suggested App. How can I get rid of the extras?

Your launch services database is corrupted. The only fix is to run an obscure OS X framework command from the terminal app. The following information has been run on my ML 10.8.1 system and fixed this issue.
Type Command + Shift + U. Now launch the Terminal app.
Change your directory location. The following long string needs to be typed on one command line. For legibility in this post, I have introduced a UNIX command line continuation character (\).
$ pushd /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A \
/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support
Now you want to run the utility to refresh the launch services database. This will be brief.
$ lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Now go back to your home directory:
$ popd
exit the Terminal.
Now check your "Open with" menus.

I've never used this feature to ask a question. Pardon not knowing etiquette and such. When I click on Creative Cloud logo/icon on my desktop, the indicator for time passing goes for a few seconds and stops, but CC app not opening.
CC app used to work on this same computer a few months ago. No changes to operating system. Photoshop is still working. Just wanted to download Lightroom and perhaps begin learning it, but to no avail.
Tried to look for a way to reinstall Adobe CC, but it says I already have it.
Any ideas?

How to clear and prevent multiple identical apps on "Open With"?

I understand why "Open With" includes both old and new versions of updated apps. Fine.
But how do I CLEAR the list and prevent this from continuing? (I'd expect it to offer a "Clear List" option at the bottom. It doesn't.)

Why doesn't the video app display libraries with filters?

Why doesn't the video app display my shared video library like the music app does music? ie. no genre, tv show title. Or how about how displaying them like when i.m using the remote app on my apple tv? Either one of these two interfaces is better than loading four hundred thumbnails. The video app is useless when I want to choose a move from my shared library. If apple wants me to buy movies and tv shows from the iTunes store they should give me a better way to choose them from my library,

You can also set the iPhone number by adding the Apple ID to the iPhone.
This links the iPhone Number to the Apple ID.
Soon afterwards a pop up messages will appear on the Mac saying the iPhone is using it's Number and the Apple ID (if it has not appeared in five minuted restart Messages)
Accepting add the phone number to Messages as a "Send From" and Receive option.
On both the iPhone and the Mac version of Messages you can then chose the "Send From " ID or iPhone number.

Changing list of apps for Open With

When I select Open With on a .jpg file, there are over 30 applications listed which is really annoying. I can't work out how to edit this list so that only the ones I want to appear do so without having to uninstall any software - it must be stored in the preferences or something but I just can't seem to work it out.
Any help appreciated.

Short of opening up the individual applications and changing a file therein (which I have done, but don't recommend) you cannot change the list. When you start your computer the system goes through the applications you have and queries them, by reading their Info.plist file, about the sorts files the application claims it can open. The system then includes the application in the launch services list for applications that handle those sorts of files. I'm afraid about half the applications in the universe are capable of opening a jpeg, and most say so. So they get listed in Open With, and, if you have a backup drive that includes copies of your applications, those will appear on the list too. I heard that the system isn't supposed to be that thorough, but I've had it list an old, forgotten, application that was buried 6 folders deep, none of the folders being an application folder, on a backup drive...

Apps showing up twice in suggested apps for open with

Brand new MacBook Pro with clean install of 10.8.2 (not restored from backup). Had this thing for two days and today is the first time that I'm trying to use it. Don't have a lot installed on it yet. In other words, we're about best case scenario for the computer...
But I'm seeing apps showing up doubled in the list of suggested apps when you right-click a file and "open with". See the screenshot, where both Photoshop CS6 and Safari are doubled up.
Ideas?

No... though I believe that the OS itself creates some form of restore partition*. Gotta think it's not looking at that though. And if it was, then every app would double, wouldn't they?
*I'm new to 10.8 and the whole "the computer doesn't come with OS disks, we have this fancy net boot thing (that totally doesn't work right)"
