Resetting mail

Is there anyway I can reset mail to default settings and reconfigure my IMAP email setup from scratch? I accidently deleted my mail account and when i re-added it, it added a seperate account and the default mailboxes are empty.
If anyone can tell me how to restore mail like this, I'd appreciate it.

I hope I don't miss anything, but you can:
-Shut down Mail.
-move the ~/Library/Mail folder to the desktop.
-move the ~/Library/Mail Downloads folder to the desktop.
-delete ~/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist.
After you reconfigure your account in mail, you can use its import function to browse to the old Mail folder on your desktop and import the old mail if you like. If you don't need to, just delete it. Likewise for the Mail Downloads folder on your desktop - just delete it if you don't need whatever is in it.

  • After reset Mail hangs w/spinning ball on "Reading table of contents"

This problem is on a 17" monitor Power PC G4, 256mb DDR SDRAM.iMac, half ball bottom, with Mail, with Systems 10.3.9
After Reset, Mail is hanging with the spinning beach ball on "Reading table of contents." Quite a few emails are being retrieved and placed in the Dock before the hang, and Mail responds to mouse commands up to the "hang." Then a Force Quit is the only way to proceed. Other programs run OK, with Mail "hung."
The reason for the Reset is that my daughter reads "fan fiction," and can go through a hundred pages in an hour, and the computer gets so plugged up that it takes FIVE MINUTES to retrieve, then display another Safari window. Empty Cache does not help. So, to get things back to normal, a reset is required. Something went wrong on this reset.
This happened once before, possibly with OS-X 10.2, and I was advised to delete a file somewhere deep in Systems, and Mail apparently made a "new" file and all was fine from then on. My "guess" is that Mail then makes a new "table of contents."
Anybody know what file to delete? Or any other advice? At the moment, I am getting Mail with another IMac, with System 10.2

    Hello Jean.
When you use the term "reset", are you referring to a
    computer restart?
On this PowerPC with 10.3.9, what is the hard drive
    capacity and available free space?
If the problem Inbox mailbox is for a POP type
account, with the Mail.app quit and using the Finder
go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named
folder (named by the user name and incoming mail
server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and if successful, a new (and empty)
INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail
within this account named folder when receiving the
    next message with this account.
This should allow the Mail.app to function properly
again while working on the old INBOX.mbox move to the
Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the
Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select
    Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of
    each here.
I have had the same problem as Jean - did what you advised and now find mail runs find but need to rescue the old mail.
This is the package content of my old inbox:
    content index 36 kb
    content_index-computername.local-372 10.9 MB
    info.plist 4 kb
    mbox 939.1 MB
    tableofcontents 1.5 MB
    hope you can help me...

I forgot the Security Question's Answer and My reset mail doesn't received a confirmation

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • Reset Mail?

My Mail is so messed up, it wont work at all with my hotmail account anymore and freezes all the time. Is it possible to reset mail? to default settings or something ? so that i could use my hotmail in it again?

    Hi TBox17,
Try deleting your *.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
You will need to recreate your accounts (I think, haven't done this in a while), but mail when you restart mail you can re-import all your already downloaded files.
Another option might be to go to ~/Library/Mail and have a look for the most recently modified emails and delete them, this could get rid of your buggy mail.

It will time out, if it hasn't already. Delete the message from the Outbox.

  • Suddenly unable las 36 hrs to access yahoo mail server on iPad and iPhone. What is going on, how to fix?  Have tried resetting mail accounts to no avail.

Unable to access yahoo mail server on iPad suddenly last 36 hrs.  Can anyone assist?

Hold off on purchasing stuff. I got my problem solved going through Apple Support for free. I'll try to walk you through this but bear in mind I've only done it once with an Apple Tech Support manager on line.
Basically you have to clear your keychain. Go to Finder Menu, Select Go, select utilities, select Keychain Access
Once you are in keychain access you may have to enter a password to unlock the keychain
Once unlocked, select preferences and then reset my keychain.
This is where I am fuzzy on what we did but as I recall that was all that was necessary with respect to the keychain access.
    Save the changes
Go to the mail program, delete your existing account
    Add a new account
De-select the option to automatically set up your account (VERY IMPORTANT)
Enter your email account info for @me.com
On the incoming mail server page
Enter the account type as IMAP
Enter the account description as iCloud
Enter the incoming mail server to imap.mail.me.com
on the outgoing mail server page
Enter the account description as iCloud
Enter the outgoing mail server to smtp.mail.me.com
    Check use only this server
And your problems SHOULD be solved
If I were you, before messing with the Keychain stuff I'd try editing the incoming and outgoing server address in the mail program first to see if that's a shortcut.
    Good luck!

  • Reset Mail & Address Book prefs back after Archive & Install

Please let me know what files I need to move around to get back my old mail files & address book. Also some of my programs won't start. They say they are missing files. What do I do?

Okay, here is the whole story with this:
I left on vacation & came back 7 days later. As I booted & began to try to download my vacation pics from my camera, it seemed really slow, so I had to force shut down. When I tried to reboot, it doesn't get past the gray screen with the apple & progress indicator. It just spins & spins but goes nowhere. I have seen where people have posted that they came back after a couple hours & their computer was working. No luck here, I left it on all day while I was at a work, & it was still stalled at the same spot when I came home. Below are the things I have tried:
    1. DiskWarrior. (I can get it to boot from the CD using the C command on startup.) It ran through replacing the directory. Found a bunch of errors but fixed them. Shows the hard drive is fine. After rebooting & the computer still stalling, I tried DiskWarrior again but it showed nothing wrong.
    2. Tried zapping PRAM & NVRAM. No luck.
    3. Disk Utility. I ran disk utility. It found no disk errors. Tried again, still stalls.
    4. Tried holding down shift key to start in safe mode, but it does nothing at all.
    5. I did a search on Apple.com & found where it said to find the file BaseSystem.pkg & get it into /Library/Receipts. Replaed the file with the one from the Tiger install CD. Still stalls.
    6. Decided to just go do an Archive & Install to replace the old system, but it won't let me. Says I have a newer version & have to do a clean install. This would cause me to loose a bunch of important files that I haven't backed up lately (I know! I know! I'm bad!!!). Freaked a bit.... It would take me forever to burn cds of all my files...
    7. OS 9. So I thought I would try to startup in OS 9.2, & that works. So I am assuming that it is an issue with OS X Tiger.
    8. I also tried to boot up without anything plugged in but the keyboard & mouse. Still stalled.
    9. I also tried repairing the permissions using Disk Utility from the Tiger CD, but it gave me an error "No Valid Packages".
    10. Also, I also held down Command V & this is the jabberwacky that come up:

Kept trying and trying & got it to let me verify/repair the permissions. Then I verify/repair the disk. Everything was fine. I was able to back up all my document files in OS9. But I still had them because the I did the archive & install. But the inbox for my mail, along with my address book (& some other stuff I am sure I will miss soon) I would like to get back to normal. Please let me know if this is possible.
    Thanks,

  • How to reset mail?

My MBP wedged so tight I had to power cycle it. Since then, mail fetches e-mail from my two accounts but never terminates. Mail hangs forever "receiving" after having received the last e-mail. I suspect I need to delete/reset something but don't know what and don't want to lose my several thousand saved emails. What do I do to accomplish this?
    Carl

Sending is fine. It is receiving that is the problem. Mail never finishes. It will gather 10 of 10 (or 2 of 2 etc) and hang. Eventually the server times out and sends an "err - timeout" message (it was expecting "quit" from mail) but mail ignores that and continues to appear to be receiving the 10th message (which it has, in fact, already has received). If I click the stop sign on the activity window, it mail says it is stopping and the stop sign goes gray, but I have to force quit mail to really stop receiving. While this is happening, I can still send.
I have confirmed that mail does in fact receive the 10th message by watching the transfer on the ethernet and knowing what the last message on the server was.

  • Resetting Mail accounts after drive crashed. Can't send...

My drive crashed. I was able to save my data with Disk Warrior. Installed Tiger on one of two external drives, and I'm setting everything back up on it from backed up and saved files.
Mail refuses to let me send. (Receives fine) My ISP (Cable) incoming and outgoing server settings have not changed. Web mail works fine. So I know my user name/passwords are correct. Also trying to reset up my business e-mail account with server settings from our hosting service. I've triple checked user name/password/incoming and outgoing settings. Webmail works fine on this account too. Mac Mail will not receive OR send on this account. I've tried ditching the Plist file from preferences and starting fresh several times. WHAT AM I MISSING HERE? It all worked fine for years before, with the same settings. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Ernie, The first part seemed to work. I removed the authentication on the ISP provided account, and I can now send and receive from this account. (With the modem authenticating, I don't need further security measures do I?)
However, the Hosted account still refuses to allow mail coming or going through Mac Mail/Cable ISP. It says that "The POP server has rejected the password for user " ". I have tried it with the hosted smtp outgoing server selected, as well as with the ISP provided outgoing server selected. No dice. (This used to occasionally happen before my drive rebuild and switching between these outgoing servers worked. Dunno why.)
Any further light you can shed on this is truely appreciated!

  • Completely Reset Mail.app

MobileMe keeps asking for the server and stuff I just want to do a full reset of mail with no email accounts and reset up.

    Follow these steps:
Open the Go menu with the Option key pressed - Open Library - Containers - com.apple.mail - Data - Library - Preferences.
Locate the file com.apple.mail.plist and move it your desktop. Restart your mac and check whether everything works fine.
If this does not help, follow these steps:
    - Shut down your Mac
    - Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button
    - Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key
    - Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign
    - Once you see Desktop, start a Disc Utility scan to detect and repair file system errors (don't forget to choose your main hard drive)
    - Click on Verify Disc and then, if asked to fix problems, on Repair Disk
    - After this, click on Verify Disc Permissions and then on Repair Disc Permissions
    - After the process is finished, shut down your Mac and turn it back on after about 30 seconds
    Hope this helps!
