Resetting master password at login?

Lately I've been noticing that when logging into our SnowLeopard miniserve after "fat-fingering" the password once, I am prompted to reset the Master Password. When doing this you are also informed that the keychain will be updated. Is there a system level setting that is causing this? It doesn't seem like you should have to reset the Master Password/keychain after one failed attempt to log into the system...? Your thoughts would be much appreciated, thanks.

So, you're essentially resetting the "ServerAdmin" password but why? After only one failed attempt? Also, here are the FileVault settings:

Hi Experts,
I have installed NW CE 7.1 and NWDS 7.1. It got installed successfully. During installation it asked me for the master password that will be used for all users. I have provided the password as "password1". But now it is not working for any of the users when I try to login. I tried with users "j2ee_admin" and "SAP*".
Please help me to figure out what could be the problem. Or how to reset the password.

How do I reset master password in OS X 10.7 Lion?

I have recently found out that my master password is not what I thought it was!
I am currently running OS X 10.7 Lion and would like to reset my master password.
There are two user accounts on the Mac - one being mine (administrator) and the other my sons (managed).
I know both account passwords but not the master password.
How can I reset it???

You are looking in your user's library - you need to be in the system library as follows.
Open a new finder window and hit Shift-Command-C. (This takes you straight to the hard disk)
Then select: Macintosh HD > Library > Keychains.
There should be a file called 'FileVaultMaster.keychain'.
Delete this file.
Then open: System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Click the padlock in the bottom-left of the window and type in your user password.
Then click the cog icon at the bottom-right of the list of users.
Now click 'Set Master Password' and create your new master password.

Master Password is a Filevault PW, & that's impossible unless you know the old one.
Another PW is used for Firmware Protection.
The other would be you Admin logion PW...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Utilities from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access the Menubar at top.

Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... give the new User a different name than an existing one.

A few years ago I set a master password. I know the master password but would like to change it.
I've read a few articles and it says to do this via System Preferences/Security/File Vault; however, when I get to File Vault, the master password info/screen/area is not there.
I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
Can anyone help me do this? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I have tried a number of these topics to the left prior to posting the question. I think the problem is that while I can change my administrator's password via Accounts, I can't seem to access/find the area for a Master Password as it is not in the FileVault area. I'm just wondering if there is another area to access where the Master Password is set.

If you used special (accented, not ASCII) characters in the master password then try to change the MP.

The master password protects saved passwords in Thunderbird and has nothing to do with connecting to your providers server. You need to work with your email provider if you have forgotten your email password. Go to their email help site and look for a link to reset your password.

Thanks. I wish I had that info earlier. Unfortunately I got a set of OS emac installation disks and tried to install and start over which basically erased everything. There were 16 disks and when I got to disk twelve it "failed" and asked to try again. I went through the whole process again and same message again.
Now I am stuck with the installer which wants me to install disc 2 to continue installation. It won't let me do anything else.
I know there must be a way to erase and start over but I'm not sure where to start. Any ideas?

A filevault was setup with a master password on OS X 10.4.11 and i upgraded to OS X 10.6 and i cannot login into my computer although it accept my user account password, it will also pop-up another window demanding filevault master password before login inn. What should i do because all my contracts documents are in there. It will not accept the master password that i have used to set it up on OS X 10.4.11

I read about the scanning troubles you are running into with your Officejet 8500 Wireless, on 10.6.8. I have some ideas that could help.
In order, try this:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
Repair disk permissions
Restart the Mac
Re-add the printer, this is the direct link for you: HP Officejet Pro Full feature Software and Drivers - Mac OS X v10.6
Try scanning again now.

When I go to a website requiring login, and am logged in automatically, I still get prompted by Software Security Defice for master password. New w/Firefox 24.

If I go to a website that requires a login & password, and I have it set up to automatically log me in, I get automatically logged in (it remembers by userid & password for that site), but the prompt from the Software Security Device for my master password appears as well. I can cancel the prompt and it goes away, but it shouldn't show up because I'm already logged in. This problem started happening after I downloaded Firefox 24 yesterday.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
