Resetting my iMac OS X 10.4.11

Hello,
I haven't used my iMac OS X 10.4.11 for a long time and want use it again, but it's very slow.
I was wondering if I could reset it on any way, I'm not sure if I still have the installation CD so is there any other way?
Is it also solving the issue, I mean is it making my iMac fast as before again?

Before going off on a Windows solution to solving any problem ... Try to pin down the problem.
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive. You should have a several gigs free.
2) You should run disk utility
      Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
      a) verify the disk
      b) update your permissions.
3) Try a safe boot.
     Shutdown your machine. Hold down the shift key. Poweron. Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
     is being checked.

Some semi-random thoughts on addressing performance problems.
Activity Monitor
Look at what is happening with your Mac when you run Activity Monitor.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
Look at my activity monitor image below.
Make sure you are looking at all processes.
Make sure that you have clicked on the cpu tab. make sure the triangle is down.
You can gain some understanding of Activity Monitor by looking at it every once in a while. Look at the small graph below to see the total cpu time used. See what processes are listed on top.
Here is how I have my cpu display set up:

Console
You can use the console application to examine Mac OS log files. The logs will contain information on various system processes.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Console
File > open console log
this will display the startup messages
and
file > open system log
once the system is started, messages will go into the system log

Choose Zero Out Data. Do not select 7 or 35 pass. A one pass zero is sufficient. Anything else will be overkill and may leave you twiddling your thumbs for days.

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, or are running 10.7+, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to erase & re-install the OS.

This solved my problem! Great advice thanks! You have saved me from doing an unnecessary backup restore and re-upgrade which is what I was being advised to do elsewhere. Your fix took a matter of minutes! I cant thank you enough.
I still dont know how my 10 year old son and friends managed to do this in the first place as his account has parental controls and is restricted. I suppose they must have held a key on the keyboard during start-up and selected the wrong options!
Anyway, a lesson learned by all.

Resetting my iMac with an awkward situation at hand.

This is going to be a little peculiar as to what exactly is happening but I do hope someone out there can help me out.
Here's an in-depth explanation as to how I've obtained this iMac:
My grandmother is a truck driver, and she has picked up the habit of being a 'dumpster diver', and so just the other day she came across a pile of stuff while she was out and she managed to find this iMac along with a couple of other things that she grabbed. She brought it to me, seeing as she had no real use for it and said I could have it. So, after booting it up and celebrating that there was no damage done to it and it worked properly, I came to the realization that it was used, obviously. So, I am here asking all of you if you know of a way for me to completely restore this iMac to it's original factory settings. I do know the steps that I can take in order to reset it, but I've come in to a problem. Due to the fact that this computer was used, there is already an administrator account created and a password set to it, I've looked around to try and find out how to reset the password and managed to find a way; starting the iMac up through an Mac OS X install disc (which also happen to be with the computer). I've tried this and it never completely loads, it just sits at a gray-ish screen with the loading icon. So, I've done all I can do to attempt to reset it, and now I am here asking all of you if you know what exactly I can do to reset this iMac.
Just incase it's needed, here is the 'About this Mac' information:
Version: 10.3.9
Processor: 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5
Memory: 256 MB DDR SDRAM
Also here is the information on the CD/DVD that was also in the iMac:

Will a hard reboot reset the IMAC after a potential power incident

I have had a lighting incident and 2 items on the surge protector did not repower up. One is the cable modem which had to be replaced. The IMAC will not start up. Is there a way to reset the IMAC so that it powers up?

I concur with Rudegar. If you took enough of a lightning strike to permanently knock out the cable mondem, it was probably enough to permently knock out the iMac also.

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
      left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
        the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
      the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.

Yes it will, unless you install the original OS onto an external drive or newly created partition. The Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.5 can repartition a drive without erasing its content.

hi, i am trying to factory reset my iMac to sell (as i've bought a MacBook) and from what i've see on the internet you need to hold cmd as it boots to go into the recovery partition so you can wipe the wipe drive and make it set up as a new Mac. You have to press the keys after hearing the startup chime until you see an Apple logo. The Apple Wireless Keyboard can be used during startup, but you have to press the keys after the startup chime.
After starting in Recovery, open Disk Utility and select Macintosh HD in the sidebar. Then, go to Erase tab and erase the drive. If you want that your files aren't recoverable, choose one of the secure erase options to erase the hard disk.
Finally, close Disk Utility and install OS X. When the installation finishes, turn off the computer. If you can't start up with the keyboard, buy a USB keyboard. The new owner will have to purchase the iLife apps if he/she wants to use them

I just bought an used Imac, and it appears that even though the previous removed any personal identification, he left a whole bunch of apps and music. I want to completely clean this computer and start over fresh. The owner gave me a DVD that has the Snow Leopard operating system. Therefore, I presume that if I reset the computer, load the operating system, download Mavericks, that I will then be set to go. Am I missing something? This is my first Mac

Restart the machien with the Snow Leopard dvd, use Disk Utility to do an erase to wipe the HD clean and then use the same DVD to install SL. After installing SL, download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.Then run Software Update and download any updates Apple suggests. Then use Time Machine to completely backup your computer and then download and install Mavericks from the App Store. Please ensure your iMac can easily run Mavericks, if it has less than 4GB of RAM it is STRONGLY suggested you upgrade to 6 or more GB.

No, Apple do not want you to distribute your family videos via DVDs, so iDVD has been withdrawn and is no longer available from Apple.
The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:

Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.

Insert the computer's original disk and restart with the C key held down. The Command and R shortcut is only for computers with 10.7 or newer installed, and in the case of a factory restore, for Macs which originally shipped with those OS versions.

Im eligible to download Moutain Lion from the Apple Apps store but I dont know when to do it? Before or After the Factory Reset
What do you I need before I get Started? Will it just erase everything and start brand new? (what im looking for)

Did the selller tell you what version of OS X was installed when the machine originally purchased. If it had Snow Leopard on it you have an illegal verison of OS X, as the license for Lion and ML upgrades are not trasferable, they're also pretty useless to you because they're tied to the old owner's AppleID. If you are not sure or cannot find out then call AppleCare.
However if the machine originally shipped with Lion on it, the simply restart in the Restore Partion, do and erase and install and you're set. You can start in the Restore Partition by holding down the Command + R keys when you hear the startup tone and then choosing the Restore Partition and open Disk Utility.
