Resetting NVRAM

hi,
I've been trying to reset my NVRAM, but I'm not sure how to do it, I've tried looking on the apple site but it's not that helpful. It says to go into the Open Firmware and type "reset-nvr" but I can't even get into the Open Firmware prompt and I have no idea how to. If anyone could let me know how to do this then I would be very greatful.
I was having trouble turning my mac on, i have to hold down the PRAM reset buttons (and it only chimes once when I do, and then turns on after I take my fingers off the keys). I did a disk utility check and first aid, but that didn't help, I tried re-installing OS X and still no luck, so my next option is the NVRAM, and if that doesn't work it's off to an apple store I guess to watch money I don't have dissapear.
I hope someone can help.
Thanks
Martin.

I just tried that, I held down the cmd-opt-O-F after the chime, I kept holding them down waiting for the prompt but nothing came up, so eventually I let go of the keys and the white apple screen came up and continued to load up OS X with out giving me a prompt screen. Any further suggestions as to how I can get to the Open Firmware prompt?

My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).
I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, & tested all other keys with "keyboard viewer" (all other keys work except for the arrow).
In addition, I have gone thru all the recommended checks with universal access and have booted from snow leopard dvd and the left arrow still does not work.
I have tried using the left arrow key in all of applications I use such as: excel, ms word, address book, calendar, iphoto, terminal, & highlighting an icon and using the arrows to move to another selected icon.
Here is the kicker!  In addition, I purchased a logitech solar bluetooth keyboard and the arrows work fine with my ipad but do not work when paired with the macbook pro. All other keys work fine on the macbook pro using the bluetooth keyboard.
I believe this says that the problem is not in my macbook pro keyboard. So where can it be?
Can anyone think of any other rabbit holes I can search?
    thanks and regards

I would also like to add that I've reverted the two cd drive and hard drive mods I did and the laptop is back to factory hardware and there is 0 corrosion or mold visible.

  • Cannot reset NVRAM, Powermac will not boot

This happened just after I edited the NVRAM content using the 'nvram' command. I have a Universal binary plugin that won't run on PowerPC, figured it might have something to do with endianness, so I tried changing the boolean value for "little-endian?" in NVRAM from false to true.
At the time I though, no matter what, I'd be able to revert back to the original state by resetting NVRAM. But no!
I get the startup chime, but the display is blank. I've tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM (cmd-alt-p-r/-n-v), but holding down those keys after the first startup chime, the computer doesn't seem to reboot (i.e. no second chime).
Is there any other way of resetting the NVRAM? I can't access open firmware either.
    Thanks in advance.

So, now I have read the manual, and resetting PMU (note that the manual claims the PRAM-battery should remain in its socket for the procedure) should reset the PRAM.
I am suspecting my PRAM battery has lost so much charge it can no longer provide the required voltage of 3.3 - 3.7 Volts. Thus, there's not enough juice in there to do the actual reset.
I'll try replacing the battery and see what happens.

  • G5 Dead? Zpping PRAM, resetting NVRAM and PMU don't work...

First of all sorry, I'm new to this forum and unfamiliar with your etiquette so sorry again if this has been taken care of before.
I own a Power Mac G5 (the first model on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP96 ). It's been running pretty smoothly up with the occasional hang ups, but nothing I wasn't able to take care of myself). Today, after two or three attempts to work on it, the whole system froze and I was forced to shut it down manually. Since then, I haven't been able to get into the OS. Here's what happens:
-The opening chime and fan work as usual, the first couple of times, the computer would sound as if loading, but it would not show anything but a black screen and I am forced to shut down manually, again.
-After resetting PRAM, every time I open it up, it reaches the grey screen with the Apple logo, but after a few seconds of the spinning gear, everything freezes and again, force shut down.
-Looked around all the forums, tried zapping again, tried resetting NVRAM, resetting PMU, did a fsck -fy check up tried to start in Safe mode (nada), tried to boot from disc, can't even reach it. Tried using the option key while loading to get the choices, still nothing.
-I've tried leaving it alone for extended periods of time, nothing...
I'm out of ideas and have a very bad feeling about what this all means... What could the problem be? I haven't installed anything new on the computer which I mostly use for ripping my LPs and to record some of my own music using Ableton Live.
Any hints, clues or help would be greatly appreciated.
PS: I forgot to mention that even though the screen freezes, the computer seems to still sound as if it's working or booting, but nothing else happens and every time I'm forced to quit manually.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. My PowerMac doesn't seem to want to boot from the DVD. Tried it twice and although I'm pressing the right combination of keys, the load keeps going to the grey screen and freezing a few seconds into the radian wheel. The only things I see to be able to do is get into single user mode or open firmware. I tried rebooting from Single User and am getting the following messages (don't know if this will help):
USBF: 20. 99 OHCI driver: OHCIRootHubPortPower bit not sticking (0). Retrying.
and this messages repeats about 30-40 times and then everything freezes.
Once I tried to reboot after doing an fsck -fy and I got a different message before it froze. Can't seem to get it back, but there was something about PACEfamily in my library ("no such file or directory) and another line about a keychain with the wrong username password...
    Any idea!?

  • Reseting NVRAM turns computer off

    Power Macintosh G4 (Quicksilver 2002)
    Dual 800 processors
    128MB Memory
    Boot ROM: 4.33f2
    OS: 10.1.3
The previous logic board had the dual processors blown, for whatever reason. I replaced the logic board, tested the memory and other components, all seem fine.
The Apple Hardware Test CD tests everything fine.
It boots up and runs into the OS fine .. sometimes.
Sometimes the computer will begin to power on, then immediatly turn off. This happens about three times before I can get it going, then it works fine.
If I try to reset the PRAM, it begins to turn on, then it turns off.
I can get into the Open Firmware prompt, do the reset-nvram, I get an OK. When I type reset-all, it gets to the second line (I think it says Flashing ...) and then it immediately turns off.
I can duplicate the computer turning off when I try to reset the PRAM and reset-all every time.
Is there a way to perhaps re-flash the firmware?
Where is the PRAM actually located--mainboard, correct?
    Any help would be great!

I tried a different battery, and I also tried the software tools to zap the PRAM; however, the same problem persists. I even tried the little button on the mainboard.
I also get a notice in OS X that:
Speaker Connection: The device plugged into the speaker port is not recognized. Please unplug the device and plug it back in again.
I tried with and without the speaker plugged into the mainboard and I get the same error on every boot.
No sound either on boot. Never have, forgot to mention that one.
I'm beginning to be afraid that the mainboard is shot....

  • Reset-nvram, reset-all necessary with RAM upgrade/EFI?

When you upgraded or downgraded ram with the ppc architecture it was always best practice to reset-nvram, reset-all within open firmware. I've gone through apple's documentation and done a little research on the internets and can't find out if this is still necessary.
Since intel macs are using EFI instead of Openfirmware, is this no longer necessary?

Thanks for the reply. Just installed 2gb (2x 1gb transcend sticks)
    So far so good:
1.83ghz, wifi, bt, dashboard widgets off, no apps running
    Xbench @ 512mb = 48.31 on batt, 'normal'
    Xbench @ 512mb = 45.18 on AC, 'best performance'
    Xbench @ 512mb = 60.29 on batt, 'normal'
    Xbench @ 2gb = 59.09 on AC, 'best performance'
Apple System Profiler reports that both transcend sticks are running @667mhz, which was a problem with patriot mem.
The 2x256mb sticks I pulled out were hynix mem: HYMP532S64BP6-Y5 AB, I was surprised. I thought apple used samsung for these macbooks.

  • Reset NVRAM while EFI Password enabled

    I have a macbook pro (late 2011).
And, I need to reset the NVRAM / SMC.
However, I have my EFI Password enabled.
And, I DO remember my EFI Password (a lot of people in Google is searching how to reset it, anyway) !!!
When I do the following -
         1. Restart
         2. Press & hold CMD+ALT+P+R while booting, it prompts the EFI Pawword
         3. I provide the password
         4. Immediately after entering EFI Password, I press & hold CMD+ALT+P+R
         5. It loads OS X Utilities, does not restart (as explained in Apple's page, the system should restart)
I have reasons to believe that the NVRAM is not reset
By the way I do not want to get rid of EFI password.
    Any luck ?

    Thanks DS Store.
I meant to say NVRAM (of Intel Macs), not PRAM (PPC Macs).
The first article is good, however, I am able to find little help for my problem.
It covers PRAM, and till OS X 10.5.X. Mine is 10.8.X.
I have browsed Google, and found that I need to visit Apple Care for EFI Password reset (or, use the logic board reset).
Any alternative ? This is bad to forbod someone from resetting NVRAM / SMC if EFI Password is enabled :-(

  • How to get to reset nvram screen manually

Sorry, I couldnt find the G4 forum. How do I get to the white cursor screen to reset the nvram on a G4 powermac. I've done it before and have the inputs written down but dont know how to get to the screen. Any help???

Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
    Your Mac will reboot.

  • MacBook Pro (late 2012 15") does not turn on unless I reset NVRAM

Since upgrading to Mavericks, when I power-on my MacBook Pro (non-retina, late 2012, 15"), I get a chime and the power light (right of front bezel of unit) comes on for a moment, then nothing. Screen stays black never comes on. If I power on with resetting NVRAM (hold down Option-Command-P-R), I get the expected double-chime, and the MacBook will come on as normal. I have a Samsung 256gb SSD and 16gb of Crucial RAM.
Is this Mavericks related? I never once had this issue in Mountain Lion. Any suggestions on what I can do to prevent it in the future?

  • Powermac G5 single 1.8ghz, reset NVRAM and now mac runs from wrong drive

    Hi everyone -
I'd really appreciate some help with this. Recently, I had a second hard drive added (at a Tekserve repair shop) to my PowerMac G5 1.8gHz tower in the second slot, since the first drive seemed like it was starting to fail. They had set up the computer so that it ran off of the new hard drive, and the old one was accessed only from the new one. Since then, my computer had been working extremely well, until a few days ago, when it refused to boot up (no chime, no keyboard response, black or gray screen with apple logo, fans running on high). Upon reading some of the posts on this web site, it was suggest I reset my NVRAM, which is exactly what I proceeded to do in Open Firmware. It worked like a charm, thankfully, and my computer booted up. The only problem: it's running off of the old, slow hard drive again! Why? I don't know - I can only assume that the NVRAM reset also reset the route to the old hard drive. Does anyone have any step-by-step suggestions on getting my computer to run from the new hard drive again? And other suggestions to keep my computer from refusing to start up again? Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thank you thank you thank you!

    Hi!
    Welcome to Apple discussions forum.
When you reset NVRAM in Open Firmware all parameters are reset to factory settings: to make short screen resolution and boot drive. So this is normal. Since you have a valid system on it. If you want the machine to boot from your newly installed drive even after a reset, invert the drives in the hard drive bay slots. Put the new drive in A slot and the old one in B slot.
An alternative is to press on the option(alt) key immediately after boot chime and to select the drive you want to boot from in the system picker.
    ;+)

  • Ram not showing up after resetting nvram

I have a 3rd party battery that was not working properly. The company told me to reset my nvram. Since doing that, one of my memory chips is not showing up. It says "slot empty" and there is no memory there.
I read another post on here that said after updating to 10.4.9, there 3rd party memory disappeared as well. I updated around the same time that I reset the nvram.
I also tried resetting the pram.
    I have a 15" aluminum powerbook G4 with os 10.4.9
    Thanks for the advice.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Sorry to hear your memory disappeared. There's no such thing as third party memory - Apple does not manufacture it's own memory, rather it uses memory from company's like Samsung and others.
If it's the lower slot, it could be coincidental, however, there have been issues with the lower slot failing, and Apple has an extended warranty repair program to address it in a narrow range of Powerbooks. Info at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303173

  • Gray Screen After Erasing Harddrive & Resetting NVRAM/PRAM (Clean Install)

I have a mid-2011 iMac (with Mavericks OS), and am doing a clean install before giving my computer to a relative. I performed a secure erase of my entire harddrive (using disk utility), reset the NVRAM / PRAM (but it only chimes once even after I tried several times), and now I get the grey screen even when I try to boot from CD, safe boot, or any other commands. I can't even get back into the disk utility. Can someone please help?
On a side note, I have the install DVD in the DVD drive and I can't get that out.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I am trying to install from the original DVD (which is the DVD that is currently in the drive), but I am not able to boot from it even if I hold down "C" when rebooting the computer. Instead, when I hold down "C" it just shows the gray screen with the "Apple" icon. When I let go of the "C" key, it goes shows the "No" Symbol and doesn't do anything.

  • Need to reset NVRAM everytime to boot.

Pushing the power button doesn't work. I could hear the chime
but all I got is the dark screen, no grey screen, let alone
    seeing the Apple logo.
Tried reset PRAM, and ran the hardware test showed everything
is noraml (At least that is what the test said.)
Reset the NVRAM (command->option->p>r) boot successfully but
really it is annoying and indicating something is not right.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
    Week 21 build.
Oh, the it happened right after I upgrade with the 10.4.7
    combo.

    Could I repair the
startup disk by running the Disk Utility already
    installed in
    the machine?
No, you would have to be booted from it. You could try running fsck to check/repair your hard drive.
    1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
    2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit should bootup normally.
