Resetting of my PRAM

Am i being a bit thick?
I can't perform a reset of my PRAM, I have a need to do so. I press "command + option + p + r" after switching on, before the screen goes grey. But nothing happens i only get one chime and then macbook boots. The last time i needed to, it worked.
Have i forgotten a mystical technique?
Steve

OK...
Anyone out there still having problems with this?
I've done just about everything I could think of. I have an iMac G5 and I need to reset the PRAM desprately.
I reset the SMU (which involves unplugging the machine, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging it back in while simultaniously pressing the power button) Still no action on the cmd-option-p-r.
Another interesting symptom is that I can't reboot to the Original Install Disk. I press the C key and it still goes into regular boot. I also can't go into Single User Mode by pressing the S or V keys. It just goes into regular boot.
I got around the booting from the Install disk by pressing the Option key and was met with a big lock on the screen asking me to put in a password before it allowed to boot from different devices. I put in my system password and was able to perform a full Hardware Diagnostic but all tests passed.
Now that has me wondering if the disk is in some state that pushes it directly into regular boot.
Then only other thing I can think of is to take the logic board battery out for a few minutes...
This is driving me CRAZY.

I had to restart by resetting the NVRAM/PRAM.  Now I have a window showing OS X Utilities.  My options are restore from Time Machine Backup (which I could do), Disk Utility to repair or erase, get help online or reinstall OS X.  What should I do?  The problem began when I tried to restart my computer and the only thing I saw was the grey screen, Apple logo, and the timer; the computer wouldn't restart from there.

I searched through trouble shooting options on the Apple Support page and was able to make it this far.

  • Hello!  I have an iMac that I lose the audio output for certain profiles.  The audio output will work on one profile, but when switching to another profile, I lose the audio output.  I've reset the NVRAM/PRAM and that hasn't solved the problem.  Help!

    Hello!
I have an iMac (running iOS 10.6.8, not upgraded to Lion) that I'm having audio issues with.  I have 5 profiles on this machine.  The audio output will work fine out of one profile, then when switched to another, the profile will not have any audio output at all.  Rebooting the machine will occasionally solve the problem.  Administrator permissions are not the issue since this has also manifested itself on the administrator profile. I've also reset the NVRAM/PRAM and that hasn't helped.  All my software is up to date and I recently upgraded the RAM to 2x2GB sticks.  This problem was existing prior to the RAM upgrade.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Tony,
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

    Reset SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Reset PRAM:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • PPC G5 quad will not start up after resetting SMU AND PRAM

    Hi folks
I been having issues with my G5,  where it would freeze up unexpectedly and then the fans would come on full tilt.
I received some advice about resetting the SMU and the PRAM.
Now my mac dose not get past the grey screen.  I have to hard drives attaches one has OS 10.4.11 the other has Leopard.
Odd thing about the Pram is I never got the mac to re-chime.
Also I was advised at the apple store to disconnect power for 30 sec and then hold the power button on for 20 sec after the restarting. I heard an odd tone and then the fans came on.
Btw this model does have the SMU button which I pressed when the power was off.
As the unit will not run with the fans removed.
    Any suggestions?
    Much appreciated
12 gig of ram in the 8 slots.  All FireWire , Ethernet  and USB disconnected

There is a battery that makes the PRAM work.  You may need to replace the battery.
You may also need to limit your RAM to two 1 GB modules, making sure they are made for the PowerMac G5 of your machine's age.  Not all 533 MHz PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM. will work with the machine, it has to be specifically made by the age of the Mac model, and Mac model name according to the vendor.  Thus if you have a Quad Core Mac from 2005, that's what you need to buy RAM for.  Do not buy 533 Mhz PC2-4200 RAM just because it says it is that.
http://www.crucial.com/ and http://www.macsales.com/ specify the model and age of Mac in their store.
Others may too, but do not have ValueRAM or non-lifetime warranty RAM.
Lastly, your model may have liquid coolent that has run out or gotten old, making it not boot.  If unsure where it is, ask an authorized service center.  Some have leaks and won't boot at all.

  • Failure to reset Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

I wish to re-set my Mac's PRAM and NVRAM. But when I hold down Command-Option-P-R, it doesn't allow my computer to start up.
It turns on the grey screen, makes the start up noise, but then drops back out again, and it keeps on doing this in a loop.
    How do I resolve this?
Can you not rest your PRAM / NVRAM if you operate on split platforms os x / win.?
    Many Thanks

That's exactly how it works.  See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.

    Hello there, tcpipv6.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up a good number of steps to try for troubleshooting issues with your MacBook not turning on:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. • Mac still frezzes after reseting SMC and PRAM

    hi everyone!
I'm kind of noob here but my story is...
My macbook pro is a mid 2012 and i am having a strange problem. My mac started to became slow and constantly showing the spinning pinwheel in every move. So i've changed the hd (that originally is a 500gb 5200rpm) for a 160gb that i've found in my home.
I've changed it and re-installed the OS X Mavericks and the spinning pinwheel still show up. So I've decide to reset the SMC ( with the original hd) and no sign of change, reset the PRAM and still the same, then I've re-installed in the 500gb hd the OS X and get back to normal, but that was yesterday.
Today the pinwheel show it up again...
I am going to buy a new hd but I'm afraid that nothing changes.
If anyone have a idea, i'll thx a lot!

    Sup guys!
Well, i've bought the hd and that resolved the issue, so that was the solution for this one!
    bye!

  • Gray Screen After Erasing Harddrive & Resetting NVRAM/PRAM (Clean Install)

I have a mid-2011 iMac (with Mavericks OS), and am doing a clean install before giving my computer to a relative. I performed a secure erase of my entire harddrive (using disk utility), reset the NVRAM / PRAM (but it only chimes once even after I tried several times), and now I get the grey screen even when I try to boot from CD, safe boot, or any other commands. I can't even get back into the disk utility. Can someone please help?
On a side note, I have the install DVD in the DVD drive and I can't get that out.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I am trying to install from the original DVD (which is the DVD that is currently in the drive), but I am not able to boot from it even if I hold down "C" when rebooting the computer. Instead, when I hold down "C" it just shows the gray screen with the "Apple" icon. When I let go of the "C" key, it goes shows the "No" Symbol and doesn't do anything.

  • Brightness setting missing after ML upgrade - SMC & PRAM resets don't fix

I've seen a few posts on this issue but none of the solutions have worked for me. PRAM reset definitely worked but did not bring back the brightness settings, and I've tried both SMC resets for portable macs (easily removable battery and non-easy) - but I don't know what to look for to know these worked right... doing ctrl + option + shift + power button when off resulted in a long tone noise, so I assumed I did this correctly to reset SMC?
Anyways, they didn't work, and I'm stuck with an unadjustable screen brightness that burns my eyes out at night time. It was previously adjustable before the mountain lion upgrade from snow leopard.
    My specs:

  • I do not arrive has to reset the pram of my Emac

Restart holding down command-option-p-r does no go for me on my emac 700
The only way I found : remove the battery
    Any idea ?
    Thank

    Go Here:
    http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repair/#imac
On the left hand side of the page is an emac link or just scroll down to about three quarters down on the page and look for a link called "emac.pdf" NOT "eMacatigraphics.pdf". Download the PDF and search in the document for PMU or PRAM it has instructions for reseting the PMU (PRAM). Basically there is a little button next to the battery under the access door (where the RAM and stuff is) to reset everything. Just follow the directions precisely and you should be fine.
    Hope that helps.

  • Mac Mini won't reset PRAM

My 2009 Mac Mini stopped updating it's PRAM: restart, hold down Command, Option, P and R yields no special action from the computer... it starts as if no keyboard keys are being held down.
I reset the PMU successfully. No change in the PRAM reset. The PRAM was successfully reset last week - since then, no hardware or software changes.
Are there any other ways to force a PRAM reset?

    [Apple's PRAM reset directions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238]
If you are really positive the above method is not resetting your PRAM you could try removing the PRAM battery. I think this needs to be out for a couple of minutes - not sure exactly.
Why do you need to reset your PRAM? I think the last time I did that on a computer was 5 years ago when I was testing a bunch of monitors on a computer with a bad PRAM battery.
