Resetting PRAM around bluetooth

I thought I would not have to do this anymore with the new Mac software - but lo and behold, my bluetooth disappeared and I had to do a PRAM reset. Am I the only one?

Most likely an issue with the system management controller interacting with the bluetooth host controller, it can be reset by doing 1 of these three depending on your situation:
If you have a desktop computer: Unplug it from the outlet and anything plugged into the firewire/usb ports, leave it that way for 45 seconds minimum check it again and see if it mounts in disk utility
If you have a laptop do one of these two steps and post back if it mounts:
Removable battery: Remove battery, disconnect charger(power adapter), hold down power button for 5 seconds, put back in battery should resolve
Embedded (non removable) battery: plug in the power adapter/charger, turn off computer, hold down on the LEFT side of the keyboard Shift-Control-Option. While your holding all of these press the power button once, let go of just the power button. Two seconds or so later let go of the rest of the buttons, you'll know this step was successful if it didn't turn on.

Bought a wireless Magic Mouse today, was real pumped to go home and use it. When I turned my computer on, there was no bluetooth whatsoever to connect to. I read the forums for solutions, tried resetting PRAM and SMC. Neither worked. Let me know what I can do.

If the HDD will boot your MBP externally but not when installed in the MBP, that usually indicates a bad connection.. Either the connecting plug is not seated properly, ot the connecting cable is loose or faulty. Open the MBP and check very carefully for those conditions. To repair or replace connecting cable is not an expensive repair, even at an Apple store.

Hi, my bluetooth on mbpro is not working now, i've tried resetting pram and smc but it is still the same ! could it be a hardware problem?

Try doing a Safe Boot and then reboot normally...

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM bring Bluetooth back

My MBP Bluetooth menu lost somehow and could not connect to
"Apple Wireless Keyboard" and "Microsoft Bluetooth mouse",
the following steps seemed working:
1. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM:

Help with BBOD! Can't seem to get to the bottom of it. Have tried SMC reset, PRAM reset, reinstall of Mavericks, Carbon copy clone, checked my CPU, Memory is 500GB and I'm only using 250GB thereabouts.

Here's what I've tried;
SMC reset
Pram reset
Looked at activity monitor - mostly seems OK aside from a kernel task taking up memory (approx 460MB) but CPU is around 96% idle.
Fan seems to be running constantly - heats up noticeably when I close the MBP
Despite a re-install of Mavericks, MBP is running frustratingly slow. Just typing is enough to bring on the beach ball.
Have backed up everything, reinstalled from a clone, checked through Apple Hardware test and carried out a Verify Disk Permission - nothing was reported, erased the drive and set up again - problem still stands.
Memory is running at 3.43 GB without anything really running bar Safari.
A little loath to install SMC fan control without knowing what's wrong.
Checked software updates.
Can anyone tell me what the matter is? Does this have a fix?
Have been reading up various posts but to no avail so have resorted to posting myself.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I was having a weird graphics issue and one step I took in troubleshooting, as told to do by Apple over the phone, was reset the PRAM. Now every time I boot the Mac Pro, the white and grey apple screen is stretched and looks to be around 800x600 while my monitor resolution is 1920x1200. Once it reaches the login screen, everything looks fine again, it's just the main boot screen with the apple log and little spinner icon. I know it was resetting the PRAM that caused this but how I can get my resolution back to normal? The resolution looked fine before resetting PRAM. Thanks.

Just a wild shot but reset PRAM again and then reset nv-ram.

Reset PRAM, now monitor shows just a circle with a slash through it

Big problem. My iBook clamshell has a battery that just started sometimes charging and sometimes uncharging while computer was plugged into power adapter. Then the computer just "blacked out" a few times while plugged into power adapter.
I bought a new power adapter, but still had the problem with the uncharging battery. One time the percentage amount of a charge would go down when it was being used while plugged into power adapter, the next time I used it the percentage amount might go back up to 100%. Money's really tight (I'm working part time & paying for emergency medical expenses) so instead of buying a new battery I dug out some instructions that helped my other clamshell that started "blacking out" a couple of years ago. At that time I was given a link to an article on resetting PRAM, and I'd printed out and kept the article.
While the iBook was starting up I held down the keys: Command, Option, P and R. You're supposed to hold down the keys until you heard the start up sound a 2nd time. Well, I messed up and held them down until I heard the start up sound 3 times. Maybe that was a fatal error - something screwed things up.
The monitor went from black to pale blue, but instead of getting the Apple icon as start up began I got a circle with a slash line through it. Nothing else happened. I had that circle mark for about 15 minutes - the computer never went into sleep mood and finally I improperly turned it off by using the power button.
I turned the computer on again, hoping the problem had gone away. I got the pale blue screen showing the circle with a slash mark. I waited awhile, thinking something might start happening after a delay. And once again I improperly turned the computer off using the power key. I won't turn it on again unless I'm given a possible solution.
I bought this 2nd iBook because it had an Airport card, and I take it to the library to use free WiFi. I've been entering an important manuscript that I don't want to use.
Is this fixable? This has me big-time frightened.

If your computer is back from the dead, then possibly your kernel panic issue has been resolved. Maybe there were software or directory issues that are now fixed.
It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and open Disk Utility and repair permissions. Disk Utility should be in the Utilities folder in your applications folder.
Repairing permissions is something you should do after every software download because permissions are changed for the download process. You repair permissions on the First Aid tab, and you want to repair them several times until there is nothing left to repair. While in Disk utility, you can also verify your hard drive and check the SMART status and make sure it doesn't have any problems. I would recommend you leave Disk Utility in the Dock so it will be handy next time you need it.
As long as your hard drive is in good shape, it won't have hurt anything to have skipped the step of verifying the drive. However, it is prudent to check on the hard drive before downloading software, because if the hard drive is failing or something, your priority will be to save the data off of it. A failing drive is unpredictable, and puts you at risk of losing everything. If you elect to keep Disk Utility in your Dock, you can check your drive anytime you like.

It sounds like maybe you reinstalled the OS by doing an Archive and Install, which would have installed a fresh copy of the OS while preserving all your settings and data.
Not sure why you can't connect to the internet. First check to be sure your airport card is plugged in and recognized. If it is, you should be able to go to System Preferences>Network and use the assistant to help you to reconnect. It may be you'd have to set up a new location or something like that.
One thing you should do is to put in place a backup strategy. If an external hard drive is beyond your means right now, at least try to find a USB flash drive. Office depot has 4 GB drives on sale for around $10 every so often, and you can find even better deals on line. You can store a lot of documents in 4 GB flash drive, and you would not have the worry of potentially losing everything if your computer dies. I am really glad you got your document back after all the hundreds of hours it took to create it, but there was a real danger that you could have lost it and all your other data.
Once you get your flash drive, use Disk Utility to format it (they usually come pre-formatted for Windows). You want to do this on the Partition tab--select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) for the format and "Apple Partition Map" for the partition map scheme. You can also give your flash drive a name. Once you have it set up, you can mount it on your desktop and copy your documents etc. by dragging and dropping.

Can I reset PRAM or NVRAM in a MacPro?

Hi all,
I'm on my second MacPro - Apple changed out the last one because of fan & bluetooth issues - and since the latest 10.4.8 update my fan is a bit louder than before so I thought I'd try the above as it worked on G5 machines. I know this has EFI or something wich is different to the G5s so any ideas?
Also, where is the SMU reset button; is it the one in the RAM bay above the higher board or is there another?
I'd like to add, this machine is giving a constant Airport connection of 3mb - 4mb + [on a 4.5mb link] whereas my previous one was lucky to give me 500k so it looks like the wires are being connected properly now?

Some suggested that resetting PRAM is the solution, so following the apple support instructions http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 I tried to hold cmd-option-P-R keys while starting my iMac. This should just reset the PRAM and restart the computer. Instead, it opens Mac OSX Utilities, so I have to say that promblem(s) not solved....

As X423424X said you need to hold them down during/after the boot chime/startup sound. Chances are you've got a wireless keyboard, the Bluetooth module on the iMac activates only after/during the chime.

External Display resolution problem after resetting PRAM

Gello, I've got Fujitsu-Siemens P19-2 monitor hooked up to my MbookPro and after resetting PRAM the correct display resolution disappeared from the "Displays" menu in System PReferences.
So did the refresh rate option...
What do I do?
I really need to change the refresh rate and the resolution, but the refresh rate button is grey and unclickable, and the resolution simply isn't there (I need 1280x1024).
REsetting PRAM and SMC didn't help.

How to reset PRAM of a remote Mac

How do I reset PRAM of a remote Mac? (It's a Mac Mini 1,1 running 10.5.8)
I can connect to that remote Mac via VNC and SSH.
And of course, right after reset, I need it to automatically reboot and allow VNC and SSH access.

Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.
Your post is very vague on what occured, and there are many types of "crashes" it really depends upon what see on the screen and what the hardware does, we can't see it to tell you, so you have to tell us.
I suggest you run through these user tips and provide more information about your hardware.

If this is going way over your head, there are local PC/Mac techs that will assist you for a fee, Apple only does hardware repairs and is advised to use them if you discover it is, especially if under warranty/AppleCare.

Files/Folders Sticking to Mouse Pointer - Not Releasing (Reset PRAM & Apple Hardware Test Fail to Run)

I've been having two issues with my Late 2008 MacBook Pro 15-inch - Running OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion). Unable to Reset the PRAM and Run Apple Hardware Test (AHT).
On a random basis - File/Folder icons are Sticking to the Mouse Pointer - Not Releasing. I've done everything from trashing finder preferences, making sure Universal Access preferences are off, Restoring Defaults in the Energy Saver System Preferences, Resetting the System SMC. Another post mentioned that this is being caused by the Graphics Driver not working correctly - and mentioned to put the MBP to sleep, then wake it up, and the files/folders are no longer sticking to the mouse pointer. This works for me and released the sticking items in the Finder.
OK, Good this is a simple fix, BUT, what is really causing this issue, and how may it be fixed or repaired?
I also tried to Reset the PRAM and Run the Apple Hardware test (AHT), and these both fail to run on my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.5.
1) Resetting the PRAM:
Shut down the MBP, press the power button, and hold down at the same time <option><command>-P-R. The Reset PRAM process never starts up, but rather I receive the Padlock/Password Login which logs me into the Restore System Utilities. I'm unable to Reset the PRAM.
2) Apple Hardware Test (AHT):
Shut down the MBP, press the power button, and hold down the "D" key, the system boots up as normal and does not enter the AHT.
The File/Folder Finder sticking to the mouse pointer issue is very annoying. Does anyone have a solution to resolve this issue?

It sounds like the hard drive is failing or has failed. Boot from your Mac install disc and if you can run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairs.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode

Resetting PRAM Messed Up My Mac!! :(

Noticed a couple of problem's after resetting mu PRAM. After I reset my PRAM my subwoofer no longer works as it did before I reset my PRAM and when I power up my Mac Pro Tower it stars and then when it's starting it chimes and does another "restart".
Before I reset my PRAM it would just start up once and not restart. What's going On? And what is NVAM? Do I need to reset that too?
Please help.

Ok, so resetting PRAM and NVRAM are done at the same time, so in that case I did it and that's when this problem started. Loss of Subwoofer and Computer chime and restart after powering upp the computer.
Anyone got any idea what's going on here? This is getting frustrating!
