Resetting Safari not clearing everything like it used to.

I am using safari 4 and resetting it doesn't clear all logins all the time. Sometimes I have to reset twice. Why?

Despite ticking the box "remove all website data", when I reset Safari not  all stored cookies are eliminated. How can I overcome the problem? Or is it a bug?

I have done a little experimenting: 1-close all open windows (I found that I had to do this step in order to keep Safari from hanging-will be explained later). 2: Remove all data in Prefs. 3: Immediately close the prefs window (no window should be open at this point) and quit Safari. Try to complete step 3 fast as possible; I have it down to a few seconds. The reason I urge you to close all windows is that Safari hangs until forced to quit upon immediately quitting after removing cookies. I think the auto page reload in Lion is the cause of these hiccups but I can't be sure about that. The hasty quit I found is crucial to success. Don't know why that is but it could prevent the data from re-populating. A quick flush, if you will.  Hit me back if you need any of my suggestions clarified; a bit wordy, I know

  • Safari 5.0.4 - 'Reset Safari' not working properly?

I've been noticing recently that resetting Safari doesn't seem to work properly. I will reset Safari at least once a day, usually more. Then I will go on a website I haven't been on for days and I'll still be logged in, or I'll go another website that I haven't been on for a week and it will show a previous search I've done, and so on. I don't understand why as this never used to happen, I don't have any sites added to a safe 'don't clear history' list or anything like that. I have all boxes on the reset screen checked and always have done. I haven't updated anything recently so can't imagine what may have caused this. Also I have a new IP address every day so it shouldn't be that sites are recognising me from that. Any ideas what I can do about this?

I have 5.0.3 installed; my reason for coming to Discussions today is to check whether folks are having any issues with 5.0.4 before I install it.
I've noticed that storage of Cookies acts strangely in 5.0.3. You can't clear Cookies permanently (via Safari/Preferences/Show Cookies). They come back from the dead. Even with 'Never accept cookies' checked a Google Cookie is installed in next to no time. This never used to happen with 3.2.1 (I routinely cleared Cookies in this way and they stayed dead).
There was discussion about this in the thread, "Safari removed cookies reappear"
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13054062#13054062
After reading this page "Create Safari cookies that expire after each session" http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20031026012426123, I posted this comment in that thread:
I decided to remove all Cookies out of Cookies.plist via Reset Safari.
I ticked only 'Remove all cookies' in the Reset Safari pane then clicked 'Reset'.
The Cookie.plist 'Date Modified' changed to the time of this operation, so I presume Cookies were removed. (I should have checked file size before and after, but didn't think of this until after, currently it is 4KB.)
I returned to Cookies.plist 'Get Info' and locked the file.
    This technique has worked well.
No Cookies are stored permanently in Cookies.plist
I just checked and Cookies.plist Date Modified is 08/02/2011 with 4KB File Size, so the File hasn't changed since I posted that comment on the other thread.
So Cookies are installed only for the duration of the Safari session. I often quit Safari on purpose during a session just to clear all Cookies before I, say, login to email.
I'm not tech savvy, so not sure if you could consider locking the .plist file for History or some other file as a way to work around Safari's latest quirk.
I don't like losing History and Cache (I find the different coloured icons of websites useful when selecting in Bookmarks lists; the icons all go with Reset Cache).
For login details, I have deselected the AutoFill option in Safari Preferences pane so no passwords are stored in the Keychain. This prevents Safari from remembering any login details, so I suspect that would overcome your problem with subsequent unwanted login to sites, but you lose the convenience of having details autofilled when you want to login somewhere. I don't mind, it helps to keep my brain cells working (remembering).

  • Phone reset does not clear status screen

we have a couple of applications that reset the phones. we have noticed that a reset on a 7941 does not clear the display (that is, the old message "Resetting, please wait ..." remains on the screen). The 7940s and 7960s are fine. does anyone know why this is?

    Marc,
The Factory reset or Restore to Factory defaults is geared towards the "Configuration" of the DMP.  The contents within flash are not removed as you have seen.  The FAQ that you reference is a good way to remove the files if so desired.  So the DMP is working as designed.

  • Reset safari - not sure its working

I accidently moved safari to my desktop, and while in the process of checking I wasn't going to uninstall it by accident I noticed something strange. I used the search bar in mountain lion, I typed "safa" and a list of previously viewed web pages and email pages came up in the results. I use this laptop for Logic/Protools work so I rarely use the laptop for internet access, emptying cache and reseting safari after every use. What are these files?

anytime I try open or do anything to them I get..
"The alias “WeTransfer” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."

  • TS1717 iTunes will not auto-launch like it used to on Win7. Also cannot start in SAFE mode

I've had this computer & this installation of iTunes for a very long time. It has always worked perfectly, and will auto-start every time I connect the iPhone. (my iPhone would light up and display the "Sync in Progress" message on its screen)
The last few times I've connected it (same phone, same cord, same USB port, same comp., same install of Win7, no Library changes, no new components, no AntiVirus changes - nothing different) iTunes will NOT launch, and the Sync wil not take place.
    But...
If -- after connecting the iPhone -- I manually launch iTunes, it proceeds normally thru the various steps except that the iPhone does NOT display any messages on its screen.  I've tried several times, and re-booted the comp several times.  I've also followed the Apple T/S steps and deleted the two config files & re-booted.  No difference.
Yes - the preferences are set to allow the Sync when I plug in the iPhone.
Yes - I am the only user.
    Yes - I am using a working cable...into a working USB port.
No - I have no third party add-ons or extensions.
    One odd thing:
On the many, many previous occasions that I've opened the list of Running Applications...iTunesHelper.exe has been opne of the various apps running on the computer.  Lately that app has vanished from the list, and...
No - I have not un-checked it in the STARTUP list.

    Well...I was partially-blind.
I had a second look at my MSCONFIG list...and 'waay down at the bottom was iTunesHelper...with its checkbox clear.  oops.
I ticked it of course, and then manually launched iTunesHelper.exe and re-connected the iPhone.  iTunes auto-launched, and (as usual) it stepped thru the various stages like it's supposed to, but still no pop-up message on the iPhone screen.
Now I'm wondering if that came to an end when I made the jump to the iPhone5 from iPhone4(?) because it certainly seems to be syncing alright...just no pop-up on the iPhone's screen.

  • Can not organise favourites like I used to?

    Hi
So, I'm bust finally making the switch to Win 8.1 from XP Home across my household, all fine apart from the fact that I don't seem to be able to organise non html based favourites on IE's favourites bar.
    Example:
I always have my Hotmail email address passcard from RoboForm as my first icon on my favourites bar but since moving to IE11 its been placed right at the end of all my favourites, after all the HTML favourites.  I move it but it goes back to the end
    following a restart of IE.
I never had this problem before, Ive used RoboForm with IE6, 7 and 8 with no problems.
    Please help :-)

    Hello Matt.
I see what you mean.  It's an interesting challenge.
The favorites bar folder can be seen in File Explorer (formerly Windows Explorer) as:
    ThisPC ▸ Windows 8 (C:) ▸ Users ▸ JohnDoe ▸ Favorites ▸ Favorites Bar
Through magic of the desktop.ini file in there, the folder name is localized to "Favorites Bar".  Its actual name is "Links".  Here's what you'll see in Command Prompt, or if you click the File Explorer address bar:
    C:\Users\JohnDoe\Favorites\Links
As an experiment.  I dropped a plaintext file "hello.txt" into it, and adjusted its position on the IE Favorites Bar.  Upon restarting IE11, its position reverted to the end of the group, just as you explained.  That's frustrating,
isn't it.  Shown in picture linked below.
I found a way to permanently reposition it, though.  It worked for this simple txt file at least.  The trick is to reuse any bookmark in the Favorites Bar, as follows.  Begin by making a bookmark to
anywhere as a temporary template, and put it into the Favorites Bar.  Rename it
test.  Next, right-click it and select its Properties.  Within its Properties, find the URL field.  Edit that URL to point to the complete file path of your desired file.  You know, like C:\Users\JohnDoe\blahblah.  In your
case, it would be the full path to that RoboForm link I guess.  Then click Apply.  When you click Apply, you'll see the file path you supplied will be transformed into URL format (backslashes change to forward slashes, and protocol prefix File://).
In the picture linked below, you'll see that's what I did.  That "test" bookmark is pointing to the hello.txt file.  It keeps whatever position I assign it on the Favorites Bar.  Mission accomplished.   ...Oh, wait.
Not done yet.  Now that "hello.txt" file is redundant there at the end.  But that's ok.  I could now cut-n-paste it to somewhere else, so it doesn't appear there in the Favorites Bar.  Then adjust the "test" bookmark's
URL field accordingly.  I should've done that in the first place.  dumb.  Next time I'll know.

  • When I do a search, with MSN as my homepage, it pops up in a new window not a tab like it used to. MSN says it is Firefox related. How do I fix this? I have the option selected to open new windows in tabs instead and it still won't work.

    <blockquote>Locking duplicate thread.<br>
    Please continue here: [/questions/832115]</blockquote><br>
I use Firefox 4.0.1 and have MSN set as my homepage. Recently, even with the option set to make windows open in tabs instead, if I do searches on the MSN page, the results pop up in a new window. I contacted MSN and they said it is something to do with Firefox. It didn't use to do this, even after initially upgraded to 4.0.1, but started about a week ago and even with me doing nothing to my computer. How do I get this to stop and go back to new tabs instead?
It does not do this using Google, AOL, Yahoo, or another other search, just MSN/Bing.

That's strange. It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is changing your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal? Also have you tried uninstalling & re-installing flash? If you need help un-installing Flash see http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html. You also could try safe mode. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Safe+Mode .

  • Help, every video files i make is not clear enough,i have use HD format, but still unclear,is something wrong with my mbp???

how can i converting formats into ASF?

Go to Apple System Profiler then Power. Tell us the stats that it says and what the condition is.
Have you calibrated? Charge and keep charged for 2 hours. Unplug from magsafe and run until it goes into deep sleep on its own. Leave in deep sleep for at least 5 hours. Plug in and charge fully and keep it there for two hours. That should give you better indications of time remaining. Your capacity honestly isn't that bad but my other suggestion is to turn off bluetooth and IR (security pref) if you aren't using them.
Also, install http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/ iStat Pro to see what kind of CPU, RAM, and battery use you are getting. You can also check what is taking up your CPU by going to activity monitor and clicking %CPU to sort by CPU use.
Last, if it is still being screwy reset the SMC by unplugging the magsafe, taking out the battery, and holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

  • Thunderbolt Display : not going bright like it use too.

Yesterday when I was dimming the Thunderbold display for the evening it didn't dim but rather went straight to pure black like it lost power. I couldn't get it to come back on until I shut down my MBP and unplugged the display. Before finally unplugging it I did the normal testing and I did notice that my USB's were still powered and also my MBP was in dual screen mode, so obviously the display didn't lose all it's power but rather the LED just went out.
After unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in it works normally other than I feel it's missing a few levels of brightness.
I've had this monitor for about 4 years but do not plan on getting a new one until a Retina one comes out... fingers have been crossed for the past 2 years for one.
    Any ideas are welcomed. Thanks

Ok, so I feel pretty stupid and blessed.
Even after all the shutdown and unplugging from the wall for hours and testing all it took was for the power at my house to shut off and then come back on.
The monitor is bright once again and I can get back to work.
I was in the process of ordering the 27in because I was wasting too much time trying to resolve the issue rather than working.
    Thank you Apple :-)
