Resetting SMC & EFI for MacBookPro8,3 (early 2011)

Hi, I'm experiencing a problem where sometimes on Start-Up the system just hangs on my MacBookPro8,3 (early 2011) with a grey screen and  the spinning fan symbol below it - when this happens the 'cooling fans' run very fast and noisy.
This issue happened a few times in the first year that I had the MacBook Pro, but I managed to cure the problem then (nearly 3 years ago) but can't remember what I did that fixed it. Since then the MacBook Pro has been impeccable with 100% reliability that almost defies belief, however the problem has only recently resurfaced after having some issues on Mavericks which I had recently installed but now have uninstalled and gone back to Mountain Lion.
At first all seem well on Mavericks but then started getting freezes/crashes where the graphics would go a bit strange with lines or something and then the whole system would freeze. Rebooting forcefully back into Mavericks on the main system boot did not always work, however if I booted into Windows in Bootcamp then all was 100% ok and sometimes this was necessary in order to boot back into Mavericks straight from Bootcamp (i,e, 'Bootcamp Control Panel > Restart in Mac OS X'). Equally I was able to boot from an external drive running OS X Mountain Lion.
Therefore after much frustration and not knowing what was causing the system freezes/crashes, I then got rid of Mavericks and even Bootcamp by doing a complete reformat of the internal SSD and then installed Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on it's own without Bootcamp just for the time being. This resulted in no-longer getting the graphical glitches nor the system freezes/crashes anymore which was a relief, however I'm now getting the odd seldom occasion where it gets perpetually stuck on power-up with the grey screen and spinning fan below. I've done Disk Utility disk Verify and Repair permissions, I've also run a full system check with Tech Tool Pro which showed no hardware issues to report at all for CPU, GPU, RAM, etc. Also before removing Bootcamp previously, I had run the SSD's manufacturers Utility and update checker to ensure SSD was both healthy and firmware was up to date in which all was well. DriveDX also reports the internal SSD to be very healthy.
I decided to again completely erase the drive and single partition on it, then reformatted the internal drive with a single partition - this time I did this from a bootable Mountain Lion 10.8.4 Install DVD and not booted from an external HDD (I kept the system at 10.8.4 and did not update to 10.8.5). The result is that the computer runs fine most of the time with apprx 12 second start-ups and 2 seconds at best shut-downs, however the 'stuck at grey screen on start-up' issue still crops up very seldom'ly which is perplexing.
One important thing to note is that the initial graphical glitch problem followed by the system freeze/crash I was experiencing in Maverick, had completely vanished after going back to Mountain Lion and has not happened since; instead it's now just the occasional stuck at grey screen on start-up issue (something I once experience a few years back).
I'm scratching my head on this one - therefore could I and should I do a complete factory 'reset' of the SMC and EFI if this is possible and what would be the procedure to do this on a MacBookPro8,3 (early 2011)?
Is there anything else it could be such as the external power supply adapter? I do have another unused newer external power supply, so I might swap them over but fail to see how it could be that and am clueless as to anything else it could be.
It hasn't done it for days now, but I know it will happen again.

Ok appologies. The problem is undoubtedly the GPU related design-manufacture flaw as experienced by the majority of other early 2011 17" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,3) owners as overwhelmingly reported in the following Apple Support post:-

  • Apple original battery for the Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro

The original battery is failing on an Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,3), 2.3GHz - it has lasted 43 months according to coconutBattery. Often refuses to charge at all, holds about 6750mAh as compared to the original 8450mAh it could hold upon delivery. The battery has gone through 848 "loadcycles", not so far off from Apple's suggested 1,000 cycles, which I assume they meant should have taken place during the AppleCare period which ended 3 years after purchase = April 2011 - April 2014. The battery began having charging problems in June-July 2014, after 3 years and 3 months.
Have looked for a replacement battery and found many. What they have in common is they are (with one exception) not Apple, and specs differ from the original (the original specs taken from the battery the MBP was delivered with as new are 31CP90/44/89-2  Li-ion Polymer 10.95V 95.0Wh Model No. A1383).
An Apple certified service center in Stockholm Sweden offers an original Apple A1383 battery with identical specs, but: they only offer a 3-month guarantee! Even worse, they claim that they cannot discern the manufacturing date (or will not provide it).
I contacted OWC (macsales), have always been happy with their products and service and knowledge. They hold that they cannot offer this battery at all but that it should be available in the Apple Store, ie online. But we cannot find it there, one of the few models missing.
Probably a lot of people with an Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro 2.3GHz will be having this problem right around now. Has anyone found a great solution?

  • Apple care protection for MBP early 2011

Apple care came with TechTool Deluxe but my early 2011 MBP came with Snow Leopard. Now that I have Lion, Tech Tool states that it has not been fully tested with Lion. Short of buying a new copy, is there a way to get Tech Tool for Lion?
    Thanks

  • Is there any way to use a late 2009 21.5 inch iMac as an external screen for an early 2011 MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
I'm trying to work out if there is any way that I can use my late 2009 21.5 inch iMac (running OS X 10.6.8; mindisplay port) as an external or second monitor when connected to my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8; thunderbolt).
From what I've read online, I gather that I cannot simply connect the two with a minidisplay port to thunderbolt cable, as the iMac does not support target display mode. I know I can 'share screens', but this doesn't give me much of an improvement on size compared to just using my MacBook.
Are there any other potential work arounds I might have missed? Any suggestions (or even conclusive answers to suggest I'm wasting my time by continuing to think about it!) would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks!

Sorry but no, you are asking about Target Display Mode and the 2009/2010 21.5" iMacs did not support that, only the 27" iMacs did. You can read up on TDM in Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • HT4904 went to install the proper version of the firmware for the early 2011 macbook pro and it came up stating that it wouldn't work on my computer??? is this because like a fool I upgraded my macbook to Mavericks?

with mavericks installed does that mean I already have the ability of runing the recovery function from the internest or what do I need to do to get the latest firmware on my system. thanks for your time and asistance

All Macs running OS X Lion or newer have got Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 However, Mid 2010 and newer MacBooks Pro support Internet Recovery through a firmware update.
If you have got a Mid 2010 or newer MacBook Pro, you need to install a EFI update to install Internet Recovery, so open  > Software Update, and install all updates. If you do not see any EFI update, you already have got Internet Recovery. You can start up in Internet Recovery by holding down Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting up.
If you have got an older MacBook Pro, you cannot use Internet Recovery, but you have got the Recovery partition to reinstall Mac OS X. To start up into OS X Recovery, hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting up.

  • Can I use a 45 Magsafe charger for a Early 2011 i7 MBP regularly?

    Hello,
A few weeks ago the 60w charger that came with my MBP started to fail and ended up shutting the mac down unexpectedly and preventing it to boot. Therefore, I had to take it to a tech to reinstall OS with all the inconveniences this caused me. Now the computer is fine.
A friend of mine lent me a spare charger he had and told me to use it, seems pretty new and fine, but I just got home and realized it is not 60w as the default MBP but 45 Magsafe charger.
I have been reading Q&As along the forum and I found different opinions, some say yes I can some strongly oppose to it.
I am planning to use it regularly for an average of 5-6 hours of daily basic use ( internet, browsing and downloading music ) can I be safe keeping it for a few months?
Thanks for your help in advance

The general rule is that a lesser charger than was intended for the computer will charge the battery (more slowly) or run the computer, but not both at the same time. While doing heavy tasks, it will be possible that the battery will drain somewhat even while the computer is on A/C power. Shouldn't be a major problem but you should try to get a proper charger to avoid any potential issues.

  • Will this RAM work for my early 2011?

I found this on apple's web site:
    - 67.6mm x 30mm (1.18 inch)
    - 2 GB or 4 GB
    - 204-pin
    - PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 MHz type RAM
    Can I use this one:
    Corsair DDR3 SO-DIMM 1333MHz 8GB KIT MAC
Kit w/2x 4GB, CL9, 204pin, Apple iMac, MacBook and MacBook Pro
    with the following spec:
    Type
    DRAM
    Teknologi
    DDR3 SDRAM
    Produktformfaktor
    SO DIMM 204-pins
    Hastighet
    1333 MHz ( PC3-10666 )
    Ventetidstiming
    CL9 ( 9-9-9-24 )
    Dataintegritetskontroll
    Non-ECC
    Egenskaper
    Non-buffer
    Voltage
    1.5 V
    (sorry for the norwegian)
Only difference I can see is that the one specified by apple has "PC3-10600" and the one this shop is selling is "PC3-16666"...
I don't know if that will cause problems...
    Thanx,
    K.

    That macbookpro needs:
    204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
so that Corsair set is correct.
But in this forum it is said always that a mac is very sensitive of the quality of new ram. And then most of the time Crucial or OWC are recommended.
In older Macs like yours (haha) I have used Corsair also once and did not have any problems.

  • Early 2011 MBP 17 Random Shutdown and Battery Behavior

Hi all, new to the forums here.
I recently purchased a refurbished early 2011 MBP 17' 2.2 Ghz i7 with 8gb and 10.7.5. Out of the box, machine looked great, but I noticed that the power cable was different than the one I had for my early 2011 MBP 15' I have for work. This raised an immediate redflag (buying from a refurb site outside of apple is always a cause for concern IMO) so I abstained from using that charger until I knew a little more. I plugged in the machine and booted it up and everything worked great. The batter was close to 100%, so after charging for approximately 20 min, I unplugged it, and the laptop immediately died. I powered it back on, and the harddrive began to spin for a few seconds, then the same result, total loss of power. Started up again, and I was able to boot into OS X and play around for a bit for a period of time before again, shut down.
For the next few days, same story. I was able to at one point, drain the battery completely and do a full cycle charge. The first time I did this, no change in behavior. Again, a few days later, I was able to drain the battery and perform a full cycle charge, but this time, a major change in behvior. Since the second full cycle charge, I have had absolutely no power problems. I haven't really "pushed" my MBP to see if fully utilizing the CPU/RAM/GPU will produce the similar results I had early, but it appears that everything is working great.
Here a few interesting notes to my situation.
When I was first operating the system (when plugged in, there were no shutdowns, only while on the battery) I pulled up my system report, and noticed that my battery cycle was very low (~5). This seemed odd, because I had opted for a used battery instead of a new one.
Prior to reinstalling Mountain Lion, my volume up key would trigger a few strange events. The screen for briefly get quite bright, then all open applications + the doc and widgets would restart (similar to killing explorer.exe in the windows task manager).
Since performing the fresh install, I have had abslutely no issue with my MBP and I love it, its a beautiful machine. However, as I purchased refurb, I'm hesitant to proceed (I will exceed my return period in ~2 weeks) without knowing my machine is in prime working condition. I have read issues about early 2011 models having issues with batteries and GPUs, but my symptoms were dissimilar to those described by others with those particular issues.
    Any thoughts?
I have a genius appointment tomorrow evening for a general diagnostics check, but if others have experienced these issues, I would appreciate some input.

    Do a SMC reset:

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

  • You can't upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive in the Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. It is not supported. Period.

I tried unsuccesfully to upgrade the hard drive in my Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro to a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive. After several attempts with different hard drives I realized that the kernel panic that showed up was due to the lack of compatibility with the drives to the MacBook Pro. I had a Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro that I did not have any issues with whatsoever. I sold that MacBook Pro and was able to upgrade to the brand new base model without any out of pocket cost. Upon purchase of the new 13" MBP I maxed out the RAM to the full 8GB. After 2 months of freezing, lockups, spinning rainbow wheels and having to force shutdown I tried one last ditch effort to see if a faster drive would help. After speaking with the Apple telephone reps and the Apple Store Genius Bar we discovered that Apple doesn't even offer the option of a 7200RPM drive on their website - a fact that I found quite disturbing. The concensus is that it is a power management issue that causes the incompatibility and the reason the drives are not offered on the 13" models. The problems I had were the end of the line for me. I just switched out that train wreck for the Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro base model. I got home and immediately installed the 750 GB 7200RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black hard drive and it was recognized within seconds. I'm back in business with gleeful abandon.

Sadly... they don't have all the answers. As someone who use to serve in the capacity (Mac Genius) it can definitely be a challenging position. You're "the voice" of Apple's service policy & procedures. Sounds like the person you spoke with got it wrong this time. It's definitely worth a follow up, because like I said, I've got a machine in my household that's living proof of compatibility between a 7200 RPM drive and 13" MBP (Early 2011).
Apple is very good about support documentation when there's incompatibility or unsupported configurations, the fact that there isn't one for 7200 RPM drives would tell me that the people/person you spoke with was misinformed.
I know I always appreciated when a customer made it known to me that I was wrong on something and supplied the right answer. I sure as heck don't have all the answers and if I can lead from my mistakes, well, I won't make them anymore.

  • Is replacing the logic board going to make my early 2011 Macbook Pro as good as before

I have an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro that just crashed completely days ago. I sent it to the genius bar and was told that I need to replace the logic board and it costs amost $1000. I'm thinking whether changing the logic board actually means that my macbook would be as good as before. I mean I'm not having high expectations but I hope that it would at least lasts for another few years. I've only had this Mac for three years and I'm not sure if its a consistent problem for the early 2011 models regarding the logic board but I sure had mine replaced for at least three times in the first year when I got it. I'm not sure if I should just use that same money to get a brand new laptop, problem is, I'm quite unwilling to switching to a windows system if you understand how it feels.

The first thing I'd look at is your hard drive ... is your free space 10% to 15% or more of the total capacity? If not, that would account for what you're seeing.
See this for other considerations: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html

  • How much memory can use my early 2011 15 inch MBP ?

I'm looking to buy new memory for my early 2011 15 inch MBP because it's running way to slow ( i have 4GB memory). I want to put 16 GB on it. Will it support it?

I too want to add memory to my 15" MacBook Pro, early 2011.
It has: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7. Currently I have 8GB installed. I saw this post and thought yahoo! HOWEVER, when I look on Apple's site it says no. That the memory is tapped at 8GB. I really hope to go to 16 GB.
Here is the link I found:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1270
So, since this post says the laptop will support 16 GB and the above says only 8 GB. Please help.
    Thanks,
