Resetting SMC

Some friends and I the other day disagreed about how to reset the SMC on an Intel MBP with the "non user-replacable" batteries. On the Apple support page it says to "press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time." However, my friends were convinced that you reset the SMC by holding down the power button for about 5 seconds when the computer is off. When they did this the power light on the front of the computer flashed rapidly. I know this is how you reset it when you can take out the battery, but does it also work when you can't remove the battery?
Thanks for your input!

Your friend is incorrect and should CAREFULLY read the Apple Advice Letter Kappy referenced. Here is the correct process on a MacBook Pro:
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

should i reset SMC... would it help?

I'm doubtful it's a missing driver too, but I feel as though it's driver related. The first time XP was installed, after first boot without installing drivers, it was without sound etc, but fundamentally the system worked. Now after first boot, it's very buggy. Thanks for your suggestion Tonny. I ran the tool but it turns out the HDD is fine. Besides, everything runs fine in safe mode.
Does anyone know if (generally speaking) there is any firmware on the graphics card that would get updated via a Windows update? i.e. is it possible that Windows update downloaded a driver for the graphics card that installed new firmware that wasn't all that compatable with XP?

  • Ever since my update to Mavericks, my Mac mini won't connect to my wifi network. I reset SMC and still nothing. The error message reads that my WiFi network could not be joined, yet my iPad and Macbook can connect fine. Any help here would be great.

I recently upgraded to Mavericks on my macmini and suddenly it won't connect to my home wifi network.  It says I need to move closer to my router whioch is really close and it worked fine before so I doubt this is the issue.  Also, my IPad and Macbook connect just fine to the network, so it seems like its localized to my macmini and now funny enough my IPhone.  I tried reseting SMC and PRAM, but this didn't help at all.  Any helpful suggestions?

  • "No battery available", resetting SMC doesn't fix it

My early 2011 MacBook Pro can no longer recognize the battery. I've tried every single fix I can find online, including resetting SMC, resetting PRAM, a combination of the two. I've even bought a new battery (it's an Anker battery) and it still won't recognize the battery.
I'm in desperate help as I start school in a weeks time!
The battery is connected and no cables inside the MacBook Pro is damaged. The SIL blinks 5-6 times, but not every single time the laptop boots.
What can I do to fix this problem?
Any and all responds are highly appreciated!

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

  • IMac won't turn on after resetting SMC

Recently my 2011 iMac starts uttering strange noise even if the fan speed is low so I decided to reset SMC this morning. However, after unplugging for 15 sec and plug again. it just won't start! No matter how I pressed the power button, there is no reaction coming from my iMac. I tried to long press for 10 more seconds, re-unplug and plug in, and tried another socket on the wall but in vain. Do you have other ideas 'cause I have not backup my data and hope to grab something output before sending it to the APPLE store. Thanks.

If you get no video or audio at all and you have confirmed it's not the power source or power cord then that indicates your power supply may have failed.

  • HT3964 Finally got to the reset SMC step and this worked. Powered the Mac Book Pro A1150 on the following morning and again grey screen and this time the SMC reset refuses to work!

After following the Apple knowledge base support notes on resetting the SMC I finally got to the reset SMC step and this worked. Powered the Mac Book Pro A1150 back up on the following morning and again grey screen and this time the SMC reset refuses to work!
The battery still as before indicates not charging and no lights on the battery pack confirm this along with the system profiler which suggests the battery should be replaced. The charger itself actually works ok.
Any further advice would be useful.

    Replace the battery.

  • How to reset SMC

My MacBook Pro fan is running constantly and does not want to sleep. I saw a suggestion to reset SMC.  How do you do that?

    SMC reset:
    Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Cant reset smc

Hi, Im trying to follow the procedure to reset the smc, as since i installed Snow Leopard the battery only seems to last a couple of hours.
When I press the shift/ctrl/option on the left side of the keyboard with the power on button once, it just starts up straight away.
    Would anyone have any tips?

How did you guys finally do it?... I've been trying to reset my SMC on my Unibody 15" for quite some time. LED, does not go off or anything after holding the keys. Been on mac's for 25 years and reset SMC millions of times...
I've read the instructions over and over... Don't think it's working..
I've tried pressing the Shift - Control - Option & Power keys all at once and I've held the keys down for 5 seconds. I've tried the above while waiting 5 seconds after the press and pressing the power button...
    Nothing works...

I really appreciate the fast sent solution about my failure to burn DVDs with Lion, but I am 89 years old and think I know something about computers, but don't have a clue about ZAPPing PRAM nor RESET SMC.  I also can't find any evidence of a preserved earlier OS (Snow Leopard).  I also don't know how to partition further my drive after all this time…(I used to have Parallels partitioned) but as I said I cannot find any where on the HD SN.  Is it possible that it doesn't exist anymore?  Not too technical, please, unless that is the only possible answer to this whole delemna..

Blue colored text in these forums usually indicates a clickable link. The two I posted in https://discussions.apple.com/message/18789716#18789716 bring up Apple's articles on those subjects. For partitioning information, peruse Disk Utilities help files, especially

  • HT3964 I reset SMc but fan still running fast

I reset smc but fan still running fast.

First, you only need to post your question once ... you can update that post by responding to it.
If an SMC reset doesn't fix a fast fan, there are several things you can do. First, find the original gray-faced OS X disks that came with the mini and run the extended hardware test, to see if any sensors are failing.
Next, install istat pro from http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/ so you can monitor temps to see if something is running hot.
Finally, load the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) and see if any programs are consistenly running more than 30% to 50%+ of the CPU.
