Resetting System Preferences to Defaults
Is there anyway to reset the system preferences to defaults, w/o completely restoring the computer? I just installed the 7.5 update for iTunes, and also changed some settings in system preferences, and now the sound out of my speakers sounds completely different, as if there is a blanket over them. To my knowledge, none of the changes I made affected this, as I went back to change them all. If its not iTunes, then is there any way I can just wipe clean the changes I've made to system preferences and just return to the original ones, even if they're the ones the computer came with?
hmm, that's not it. thanks for your reply though.
i've switched to other programs (using command tab) and it doesn't work.
for example, right now, i have 'terminal', firefox, safari (and finder) running. i've switched to each of these programs and command q doesn't quit any of them. something is definitely hosed up.

I think, or rather know, this is pretty simple. I know because I was told how to replace or get rid of system preferences by an Apple tech when I first bought this Mac Pro (09 Quad). Alas, I didn't write it down at the time as I was in panic mode in general confronted with a new Mac and as a new Mac user.
Specifically, the locks won't stick in any of the system preferences, which was the problem before. When I lock preferences they don't stay that way. Next time I check them they're all unlocked.
The tech had me go in and delete a file or folder I seem to recall is located somewhere in the System Library and then restart, at which point I seem to recall the system created a new System Preferences file or folder that then worked properly. I might be leaving out a couple details I can't recall. I just can't recall specifically enough and don't want to make a mess experimenting based on faulty memory.
Can anyone help with this? Thanks very much,I have the opposite problem, and it's driving me crazy.
I +do not+ have the "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" preference checked, and +do not+ want to have to unlock System Preference panes to use them. Yet after each restart, the panes are locked (whether I left them locked or unlocked)!
I am an administrator. The computers are running Snow Leopard (latest version). I have four computers, two exhibit this behavior, two do not (they work as expected, leaving panes unlocked according to the Security: General preference setting).
I have upgraded, or migrated these computers from Leopard, and I suspect there is some sort of remanent from the previous OS that is causing this beharior, but resetting permissions has not solved the problem. Nor has replacing System Preferences preference files. This security setting must be buried deep, as I expect it would be, and I cannot find the stubborn file where it is stored that seems to defy and ignore the "Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane" setting.

Why can't I reset System Preferences?
I want to change my screensaver and I can't open "System Preferences" -- I get the error message that System Preferences isn't available on this Mac?
Reinstall the unmentioned OS and try again.

Any way to reset system preferences without being able to see the screen?
I did something really stupid -- I'm running 10.5.8 on Mac mini with a 720p television as a monitor. The system rez seemed a bit too low so I wanted to change it. I went to System Prefs, Display and before I even picked a rez, a window popped up and read (paraphrasing) that a low system rez, (it gave a number, I think it was 640x480, could have been 800x600), might not be compatible with the software (OS?) -- so I clicked "Okay" unwittingly, thinking it telling me for my info and not that it was on the verge of applying that rez when I clicked "Okay". I got one brief glimpse of the screen as the rez changed -- then it went to black.
I tried booting from the install disc but without re-installing the OS I couldn't get to the System Prefs.Yes, the screen was visible when booted from the Install Disc. Safe Boot would have been my next try but I couldn't remember what key to hold. Thanks for the reminder. My impatience, however, led me to take the easy, but sure, way out by re-installing the OS.
Of course, being on a hot streak, I reinstalled from the original discs (Tiger, but there was no designation as such on the actual disc), forgetting that I had upgraded to Leopard, so I moved backwards in the OS category and in doing so found that Tiger takes up about 9 more gb then Leopard which I really need. And the app for the project to which I was dedicating that mini -- VHS to .mov copying -- informed me that it didn't work with "the current OS", despite the mfgr (Roxio) listing 10.4 as a useable OS.
I'm going to re-reinstall the OS -- this time with Snow Leopard with a complete hd wipe (hoping to get back a lot of disc space) and be extra, extra careful the next time I attempt to change the screen rez. I kinda wish I had been patient enough to strive for a solution to my original problem, especially since haven't actually saved any time by reinstalling. I think I'll attempt to recreate the problem if I can since I'm going to reinstall again anyway and try the Safe Boot. If it works it would certainly be worth knowing. -
Hi,
I am having a problem with System Preferences freezing up when selecting Desktop & Screen Saver. Everything else on the system works fine.
I loaded a picture on the Macintosh HD Device (all other pictures are under a specific user account) to access it as a desktop background. The correct picture appears as the desktop background, but I want to change the picture. As soon as I select Desktop & Screen Saver under System Preferences the window freezes.
The only way to unfreeze is to select something else on the Dock (which doesn't magnify as it normally does), then close that and go to back to System Preference and then close it. Or select something else from the dock and then Force Quit the Systems Preferences.
I will get an error message and the problem details (which I know VERY little about) show an Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV) and
Exception Code: KERNINVALIDADDRESS
If that helps.
I tried sending the picture to the trash and then reloading it, but that didn't help either.
Any ideas on how to get back the the default or fix this problem are greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Message was edited by: PGmeyerHere is the fix that was suggested on another board and fixed the problem.
remove the followinf files and restart you mac
Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
That should at least reset the system preferences to default
For the desktop/screensaver remove
Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
After a restart all should be back to default settings. -

Why have my system preferences suddenly started to reset back to default every time I reboot At first I thought it was happening because I disconnected my Google account, but now I've disable that account and switched to Firefox. I wasn't sure how my browser setting could have anything to do with my system preferences and now I think it's some glitch or missed setting that is causing the problem. Oh & I locked my preference panel and that did not help.
In addition to what I say above, not only are all my system preferences being reset to default, but also the preferences for word and Excel. I'm sure it's affecting other programs, but Word & Excel are the main ones that I have a lot of custom setting for. Especially annoying is the fact that my ribbon commands are reset. All this started happening when I signed up for a Google Drive account. The only system updates have been the usual security updates. I deleted my Google account but haven't uninstalled it. I'll try this, but I can't figure out how that would result in all OS preferences being reset. Here are a few more:

System Preferences settings reset on reboot.
I have a Mac Pro that keeps loosing is System Preferences. I change the mouse settings and as soon as the machine is rebooted, settings go back to default. I've seen other posts similar to this but no one has had a solution.
Hello afloc,
You will have to reset your System Preferences to do this but it might help.
Locate this file: com.apple.systempreferences.plist It's here: /Home/Library/Preferences
Open the Preferences folder, locate that file, drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
Now try your mouse...

If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
My System preference are resetting to base everytime I restart.
Not all, but many of my system preferences are resetting to the defaults every time I quit.
Most specifically,
1. in Keyboard I turn off all the system function key settings, then restart and they are back
2. in Sound I adjust the right left balance and it resets to center. But it does keep my output choice
3. in Mouse it keeps rechecking natural scroll.
It's almost as if I want my mac the way if was pre mountain lion but it thinks it know better.
Is there a corrupt prefferences file I can get rid of? Something I can reset?
It's driving me crazy, and I was only barely sane before this happened.
Thanks,
TomBack up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.

Hi all.
I've just been given an Air. I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything (which didn't work very well: no Contacts transferred and the Air Contacts application can't even open manually transferred Contacts Archive .vcf).
Trying to transfer contacts led me to iCloud - I thought I could copy them from there. Then I discovered that I can't sign in to iCloud via System Preferences. I get two error messages. The most common one is 'you cannot sign in at this time'. I've tried every solution on the web: I reinstalled Yosemite. I reset Keychain Access. I deleted Accounts plist.
The other message I occasionally get is 'This is a valid Apple ID but not an iCloud account'. It is: I'm logged on fine on my MBP, iPhone and iPad.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance,
AidaSo - I have been having this same issue, and while it's not totally resolved for me, I have figured out what's causing it. I am running a machine with two hard drives and to keep my documents on a separate drive from the OS/Applications, I used the Advanced Option to specify the location of my home drive for my user account under "Users & Groups". I've found that if I reset this to the default path of /Macintosh HD/Users/{username}, that it works fine. However Apple has a bug in that this functionality breaks when you specify your own home directory. Hopefully, this will be addressed in an update.

System Preferences resetting?
Hello All,
Is anyone else experiencing an issue in Leopard where your System Preferences are resetting/aren't sticking?
On several different occasions, I've noticed that my Preferences for Little Snitch seem to change back to the default settings. I just assumed that it was a bug in the software.
Today, I noticed (by accident) that some of my .Mac preferences had been reset; all of my Sync items (Bookmarks, etc.) were unchecked (and I KNOW I set them), and +Back to My Mac+ was turned on, and I know that I never would have done that (I only have 1 Mac with Leopard installed).
I use an app called +Preferential Treatment+ to check the integrity of my System Preferences, and it appears that everything is OK; no corrupt files.
What gives? Am I going crazy???
Please help. My concern is that one of my important preferences, like Security (Firewall), will turn off, and I won't know.
Thanks! This happens to me, if I change the ? option in the Desktop preferences or the key combos in the Expose preferences they tend to reset. The only way I can get them to stick is by editing the .plist file directly. When I do this I can see that System Preferences doesn't seem to be saving the changes I made.

Keyboard system preferences resetting after restart
Greetings,
I began with 2 similar problems. My menu bar and keyboard system preferences would reset after each startup. I fixed the former with https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6028346?tstart=0
Still, every time I restart or logout my keyboard system preferences reset to the default. These defaults interfere with the software I run- Logic & Pro Tools, so while not the worst thing to have to remember to reset them each time, it is a drag.
Any help will be appreciated
ThanksThe procedure below will reset the permissions of a user's home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later, including 10.8 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used under OS X versions older than 10.7.4.
Back up all data before you begin.
Step 1
Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.
Step 2
Press the following key combinations, in the order given:
Command-3
Shift-command-H
Command-I (the letter "I" as in "Info.")
The Info window of your home folder will open.
Step 3
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Step 4
In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.
Step 5
By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.
Step 6
If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups other than "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.
Step 7
Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window. -
Appearance Options in System Preferences occasionally resetting
Im running SL 10.6.4 and I have recently reinstalled the software hoping it would solve this issue but unfortunately hasn't. To simply describe it, by Appearance settings reset themselves to the default values and open and newly opened programs revert to the original settings.
I have my settings set up as follows: http://cl.ly/4d404f458333c202d447
And when it resets itself, it reverts to the following (with all programs changing too): http://cl.ly/06aa37a267d41044d7b2
Interestingly enough, every time it happens, I catch this message in the Console:
System Preferences[9952]: .scriptSuite warning for result type of command 'timedLoad' in suite 'SystemPreferences': the type NSNumber ('long') doesn't match the result Apple event code ('doub').
Does anyone kno what error is concurring? And does anyone know of a way to possibly fix it? I reset my PRAM and delete the System Preferences plist in addition to re-installing SL, hoping it was a corrupted Preference file, but that didn't work either.Open a new account to see if the issue appears there.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
Click _*Repair Disk.*_
Restart your computer when done.

Dock and System Preferences Reset after Crash
Hi,
My computer restarted itself when I was opening a keynote document (there was no warning and I can't find a crash log). When it came back my dock had reset to the default settings and several of the applications I had on my dock were no longer there. In addition some of the other preferences I had (such as Expose hot corners) were reset.
I can easily enough reset these, but this is the 3rd or 4th crash in as many weeks, so I'm nervous that there's something serious going on. Though the others have not had such visible after-effects.
What might explain losing my dock and system preferences? Is there an easy way to get them back?
Also, what's the best strategy for evaluating the health of my system and health of my hard drive so I can figure out what's going on? Yesterday I ran "periodic daily monthly weekly" as well as Repair Permissions from the disk utility. (no permissions problems were found)
MacBook Black Mac OS X (10.4.8) Only one user account on machineI had a similar problem. I used Keynote for a talk, which I finished without any problems. But the screen was blank when I later opened my laptop back up. After a forced restart, the dock preferences were in some sort of default settings. I have an older Titanium PowerBook, so it doesn't look like this issue is specific to the Mac Books
I have run out of ideas after doing a number of things to try to track down all the issues. Here are some more specifics of the problem:
When I log out, and log back in, the dock settings always revert to a default setting (no need to restart the computer).
The dock settings for other users on the same computer work just fine.
When I remove the dock settings from the ~/Library/Preferences folder and log out/in, the problem still persists.
If I save a copy of a working dock settings file, I can log out/in, drop the working file into the Preferences folder, then use Activity Monitor to quit the Dock, and when it restarts it will use the correct settings.
I have removed the whole Preferences folder, then logged out/in, but the problem continues to exist.
